New York Times Magazine critic Deborah Solomon conducted an all-over-the-map interview with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, alternating between conservative "terrorism," lesbianism and Girl Scout cookies. At one point she wondered, "But do you think certain radio and television hosts are feeding intolerance and even terrorism?"
Solomon’s interview, which will appear in the August 16 print edition of the Times, also included an attack on Glenn Beck of Fox News. After repeating the host’s contention that President Obama "has a deep-seated hatred for white people," the journalist derided, "Do you think a statement like that incites hate crimes?"
Solomon shifted between talking about right-wing extremism and an embarrassingly goofy exchange on Napolitano’s cookie preference:
You were a Girl Scout?
I still am!
I was, too.
What’s your favorite flavor of cookies?
I like the plain shortbread.
Ah, butter-flavored shorties. Yeah! You can get me either with the thin mint or the peanut butters.
The Times journalist also included no less than three questions about the dating habits of the DHS secretary. She began, "Men don’t know what to make of women who choose to be single. Rumors of lesbianism have dogged women in politics like you, Condoleezza Rice and Ann Richards." Not letting the subject drop, Solomon continued, "In 2002, during your gubernatorial campaign, you publicly denied rumors that you were a lesbian. After Napolitano asserted that she simply wasn't married, the reporter queried, "Are you seeing anybody now?"
Solomon did ask a few tough questions, but one of them catered to left-wing worries about fear-mongering: "As you prepare to face your first 9/11 anniversary as the secretary of homeland security, what do you make of the color-coded terror alert system, which has been criticized for unnecessarily stoking fear?"

Why bother?
August 15, 2009 - 07:51 ET by FeynmanFanIt's really hard to take someone like Deborah Solomon seriously - so why bother?
Unfortunately
August 15, 2009 - 08:06 ET by OneCleverCookieconservatives didn't take the hard core left 'seriously' for many years, and now it's coming back to bite us in the rear. These persons are very real, and VERY EMPOWERED. We cannot afford to take any of their statements, actions, or inferences casually any more.
This columnist may be a hack, but she is a hack with an enormous bully pulpit.
Maybe, but
August 15, 2009 - 08:22 ET by FeynmanFanThe hard core left are only empowered among their own groups, and have influenced conservatives only to the extent that conservatives allowed it to happen. If conservatives push back and reject the hard core left's positions, it will turn the tide. Like most bullies, they are only effective to the extent that they are unopposed.
I disagree with you. What
August 15, 2009 - 11:45 ET by nadadhimmiI disagree with you. What bully pulpit?? I've never heard of this person. She's just another low level presstitute looking to move up the presstitute ladder by repeating the same old, tired, party line propaganda. Face it dude, the vast majority of Americans can't stand politicians, or their ass kissing sycophants. People are fed the hell UP!!!!VOTE ALL THE SCUM OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!

Question:
August 15, 2009 - 15:07 ET by OneCleverCookieDo you have a newspaper column; plus access to high level government officials whom you may interview at will in order to write about?
Hmm..., I'd call that a "Bully Pulpit"; wouldn't you?
The point in which I'm making is that while the productive citizens were living their lives, Progressives were devising ways in which to steal properity for themselves, instead of working for it.

August 15, 2009 - 08:02 ET by superconDid she really ask her if she was a lesbian....? That is too funny. I bet Janet was thinking " Why does everybody ask me that...? A lot of middle aged unmarried women have crew cuts. I think I'll go golfing this weekend "

Meanwhile, a Wikepedia article about Debbie - no friend of the conservative voice- tells tales of her repeated made up stories and questions of her interviewees. Might one claim the same here . . .
Regarding a colored coded alert system for terrorism, I say do away with it all together. What were they thinking in trying to keep people informed about possible terrorists attacks. Besides, this DHS thinks the boogey man is us in the first place!
I Cannot wait for them to go under
August 15, 2009 - 08:06 ET by Alpedhuez55This is coming from a Newspaper that will not even call terrorists terrorists. Blow up an airplain or building and you are a an insurgent or freedom fighter. Yell at a congfressman for trying to ram through a bloated Health Care bill and you are a terrorist. Journalism is dead.

Oh, we know who she means. I thought I saw the other day that since Zero's inauguration that FoxNews and Rush and Great One Levin and Beck are having ratings higher than they've seen before. The "sleeping giant" has, as a young woman said at a town hall, awakened this summer.

Dangerous tone...
August 15, 2009 - 09:58 ET by NonArabOmarThe liberals have a dangerous tone. They seem to all have taken a collective decision on promoting this idea that certain conservatives are out to kill Obama and cause some havoc.
They are losing on the issues. The populous is turning on them. If I were Obama I'd be afraid of my own party. It's like these liberals are desperate for another MLK or JFK to rile up their base and convert some non-liberals into liberals.
The left has exploited assassinations in the past to promote their own agenda. It's like there is nothing these liberals would like more than for Obama to die so they can martyr him and turn his death into a political movement. By killing him the liberals would find themselves justifying any sort of Nazi tactic against the right.
They'd have lame candlelight vigils. They'll force some faux conservatives to bend to their will and condemn all conservatives for "fueling" the hate that kills him. They'll go after gun rights. They'll pitch socialism as that which the Obama messiah gave his life for. They'll be sticking conservatives in concentration camps.
If I were the secret service I'd be more careful of radical left wing nutties.
What does the right have to gain from his death at this point? Why not look up more dirt on the guy? Why not dig up his gay lovers or 18 year old mistresses? Obama makes himself look bad everytime he lies to our faces. His poll numbers are sinking on their own.
