Of the three major networks, only CBS has managed, thus far, to ignore controversial comments from Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that compared America’s disputed election in 2000 to political corruption in Nigeria. ABC, however, highlighted the August 12 remarks on Thursday’s Good Morning America. GMA news anchor Chris Cuomo challenged, "Now, did [the comments] cross the line?"

Co-host Robin Roberts chided, "Hillary Clinton in the hot seat. She compares Nigeria’s politics to the controversial Bush/Gore election here in the U.S. Did she go too far?" Clinton, who was in Nigeria at the time, said this: "Our democracy is still evolving. We had all kinds of problems in some of our past elections, as you might remember. In 2000, our presidential election came down to one state where the brother of the man running for president was the governor of the state, so we have our problems, too."

In addition to GMA, ABC played the remark on the previous night's World News. CBS avoided the comments during Wednesday’s CBS Evening News and Thursday’s Early Show. Brian Williams briefly reported on the quote for the August 12 NBC Nightly News, featuring the remark and labeling it "another off-the-cuff comment" for the Secretary of State. NBC did not discuss the story during the four hours of Friday’s Today show.

ABC’s Jake Tapper provided the most coverage. On Good Morning America, he observed that this was "the second time this week that the nation's top diplomat has been accused of making undiplomatic remarks." The network correspondent then reminded viewers of Clinton’s outburst earlier in the week over a question that seemed to be asking for her husband’s opinion on an issue.

Providing balance, Tapper featured a talking head who defended the comments, Walter Russell Mead of the Council on Foreign Relations, and also Ilya Shapiro, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute. Shapiro critiqued, "When you criticize your country as an official of that country, it obviously undermines the authority of the government."

A transcript of the August 13 GMA segment, which aired at 7:02am EDT, follows:

7am tease

ROBIN ROBERTS: Hillary Clinton in the hot seat. She compares Nigeria’s politics to the controversial Bush/Gore election here in the U.S. Did she go too far?

7:02

CHRIS CUOMO: We have some other political news this morning. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is making more waves on her Africa trip, speaking in Nigeria on Wednesday, Clinton apparently compared that nation's corruption and electoral problems with the disputed 2000 presidential election here in the U.S. Now, did that cross the line? Senior White House correspondent Jake Tapper is in Washington. He's following this this morning. Good morning, Jake.

ABC GRAPHIC: Clinton’s Tough Week: Candid Comments Causing Controversy

JAKE TAPPER: Good morning, Chris. Well, that's right, it’s the second time this week that the nation's top diplomat has been accused of making undiplomatic remarks. In Nigeria, a land of corrupt elections, the Secretary of State tried to push the message that embracing violence after a disputed election is never the answer. But then she said this.

SECRETARY OF STATE HILLARY CLINTON: Our democracy is still evolving. We had all kinds of problems in some of our past elections, as you might remember. In 2000, our presidential election came down to one state where the brother of the man running for president was the governor of the state, so we have our problems, too.

TAPPER: Republicans pounced, accusing Clinton of comparing the Florida recount to the kind of wholesale fraud you see in Nigeria. Governor Bush is "declining to weigh in on these ill-advised comments," said a spokesman for former Florida Governor Jeb [sic], "but he wishes Secretary Clinton a safe and successful trip."

ILYA SHAPIRO (Senior fellow, Cato Institute): When you criticize your country as an official of that country, it obviously undermines the authority of the government.

TAPPER: A State Department spokesman said Clinton was merely trying to push the idea of accepting a flawed result after a dispute rather than resorting to violence. "There are still some who think Gore won more votes," said the spokesman. "People still raise questions about hanging chads or the butterfly ballot. We're still arguing about it. But, eventually, Vice President Gore accepted the results, yielded and paved the way for President Bush's inauguration." And some foreign policy people agree that Clinton said nothing wrong.

WALTER RUSSELL MEAD (Senior Fellow, Council on Foreign Relations): I think she was doing the right thing by giving the Nigerians a sense that we Americans, we’re not perfect either. All counties have problems.

TAPPER: These comments just two days after Secretary Clinton in the Congo seemed to take offense when asked how her husband felt about China's offer of a loan to that country.

CLINTON: My husband is not the secretary of state, I am.

MEAD: After the comments on Monday, everybody was watching her like a hawk.

TAPPER: The White House says they back Secretary Clinton 100 percent, that she was just pointing out the same argument that President Obama made when he was in Ghana, that it's important for losers to get past losing the election and move on. Chris?

CUOMO: All right, Jake. Let’s go from politics to policy this morning. You have got some news on health care reform front. There’s this whole battle about information versus disinformation. What have you heard about the administration this morning?

TAPPER: Well, we have an exclusive report here, the fact that the administration is tired and feels victimized of these viral E-mails that emerged seemingly out of nowhere spreading misinformation throughout the world about health care reform and other issues. They’re launching a viral e-mail of their own this morning from White House senior adviser David Axelrod outlining in his view eight reasons why reform is needed, eight reasons why reform is urgently needed and eight common myths about reform and also links to a web video where the White House health care reform czar deconstructs and takes apart one of the opponents viral E-mails, talking about all of the myths within it. Chris?

Hill's getting cranky

She needs to work out in the gym and lose some of the fat that's accumulated in her head.

Bush v. Gore affirmed that

Bush v. Gore affirmed that when conducting a recount ALL ballots must be counted and be held to the same standard of scrutiny.

Norm Coleman could have taken his case to federal court and because of Bush v. Gore, he could have forced the 4,400 unopened absentee to be counted and he could have had many of his own "disallowed" votes to be "re-allowed" and Al the Joke Franken would probably not be a senator right now.

Coleman probably decided not to do that because he wants to run for Governor.

Watergate

Glad to see that Hill is still on top of that disproved 2000 thing. And I hope in the next country she visits she brings up Watergate... and McCarthy... and the 1960 election in Chicago... and, and  Lewinsky--oh,wait...

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

Opinion v. Knowledge

Opinion is your belief. Knowledge is your belief that you can justify.

Hillary has an opinion, but she's presenting it as if it was knowledge. As it is, of course, she has no justification for her belief. She mentioned that Jeb Bush was the governor of Florida, but she has no proof that Jeb did anything to help his brother get elected. She just let it hang there as if it was so obvious that she didn't have to offer justification.

The same distinction comes into the healthcare debate. The Obama Gang is trying to label all opposition as "disinformation." They're trying to peddle their opinion as established knowledge, as fact, as opposed to the stupidity and lies of the other side.

Nah. They have an opinion. We have an opinion. When you have contrary opinions, you conduct a debate by examining the competing justifications. The White House wants to criticize the other side's justification, but they refuse to allow anyone to criticize their own. If anything has become clear in this political scrimmage, it's that the White House absolutely refuses to accept criticism. They portray all criticism as fear. They don't want to debate. They want to cast aspersions on the other side.

Just my opinion ... LOL

Hillary's opinion

Has me seeing red.

I am sick and tired of these liberal losers recasting the 2000 Florida election.  I had to sit through weeks upon endless weeks, watching the idiots at my local courthouse peer at pregnant and hanging chads.  All the while several thousand military absentee ballots were legally ignored.  And the national media made a laughing stock out of the Florida electorate.

Oh, and while I'm at it, it was a DEMOCRAT supervisor of elections who came up with that beautiful butterfly ballot in Palm Beach, but I digress.

Hillary (the Carpetbagger) needs to shut up.  Just my opinion, of course.  :)

I hope he fails, too.

Fact vs.Opinion

This is one lesson the modern "journalists" have not learned. And so many college students have not been taught it for many years. Check the "thesis" of some well-known people.  Sad.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

Agreed

As a student of philosophy, I was taught to justify what I argue, instead of just presenting it as "received truth." Whether my justifications hold water, well, that's where the fun is. But I was always taught to try to justify it, as a matter of intellectual integrity.

Journalists in the MSM constantly pass along the assumptions they pick up in their newsroom, and they treat those assumptions as "well-known facts," even if they're only known in the small boundary of that newsroom.

Let me pander to the NB staff: one of the reasons I enjoy NewsBusters is that the staff always includes reasons for their opinion. They don't just throw out accusations. They back it up with quotes, video, citations, and sound argument. They justify their opinion. I like that.

"She mentioned that Jeb

"She mentioned that Jeb Bush was the governor of Florida, but she has no proof that Jeb did anything to help his brother get elected. She just let it hang there as if it was so obvious that she didn't have to offer justification."

But when there is actuall proof of corruption - like a perjury conviction or a pile of mysteriously missing bank records or... or...or..., she blows it off as just part of a vast right wing conspiracy.

Typical corrupt, hypocritical, leftist politician.  I hope her frustration causes her to resign...I'm sure the View has a spot for her.

Insinuations

Agreed.

Of course, I doubt the Clintons are willing to conduct arguments by making statements with hanging insinuations. Because if we accept unfounded accusations as if they were justifications of knowledge, then let's also consider ...

  • "Hillary can't remember where she stored her Rose Law firm billing records ... "
  • "China suddenly discovered many of our technologies, by the most amazing coincidence ... "
  • "Mark Rich got a richly deserved pardon ..."
  • There's a vast right wing conspiracy ... "

The Clintons were the ultimate hypocrites, gleefully engaging in the politics of personal destruction (not to mention Carville, Begala, Rahm Emanuel, and the list goes on), and yet piously wailing about the injustice of it being used against them.

Most Americans learned to dismiss the Clinton's hypocrisy after so many years of sad experience. The Nigerians don't have the same political calluses we've all developed, so it's unfair to them.

Hillary

Hillary, the great lawyer that she is , I'm sure remembers the case went to the SCOTUS because of the nullification,by that oft overturned Florida State Supreme Court, of the THEN EXISTING FLORIDA STATE ELECTION LAW, under which Bush was declared the victor. Jeb had no more say than I did about the location of the Rose law firm billing records or her grand jury testimony. What a bitch. She gives me more and more reason to sympathize with Bill evrytime she opens her pie hole.

Another Democrat bad mouthing America. Imagine if this bitch had become president. She is taking out her frustrations on us. No wonder her husband is a whore! She is cold blooded. Like a snake.

Here, I'll fill in the cutoff part of the banner: "New fu(ckup on my Africa trip)

Fool fakes left and tosses the ball to Bush

Clever ol' Hillary. When you've made a fool of yourself (not channeling Bill), fall back on the favorite call in the Democrats' playbook: Blame Bush. Better yet ---- blame two Bushes.

I guess she thinks Nigerians are stupid too.

next in charge??

just think how the "olde hill" would be under real problems ,who will take that 3'o clock phone call,....talk about P.M.S...impeach now!! maybe some term limits may wake'm up? B.L.C.-go-Dr.Savage

Retirement

I see this and other late behavior as a sign that Hillary is going to retire in a year or two, permanently. Otherwise I think she is too smart to give her future opponents such a gift as this. Lately she just doesn't give a damn about anything.

"Another

off-the-cuff comment"?  No, another off-the-wall comment.  As someone posted, she just needs to go to the gym.  And learn that most valuable of phrases to left-wing politicians, "no comment".
