Former Vanity Fair and New Yorker editor Tina Brown appeared on Friday's "Morning Joe" to lament that a new liberal ad featuring Rush Limbaugh would only elevate the status of the "blow-hard bullfrog" conservative host. The liberal group Americans United for Change has a spot running that slams Republicans as a party of no and features a clip of Limbaugh's now famous comment that he wants Obama's liberal policies to fail.
After "Morning Joe" co-host Willie Geist played the ad, Brown asserted of the commercial, "I adore the 'party of no.' I think it is wonderful." She then complained, "The only thing I do regret though is that this giant, you know, blow-hard bullfrog, you know, Rush Limbaugh is being turned into this big icon."
Brown, who now edits a website, "The Daily Beast," added, "So, you know, I love 'the party of no,' but I'd love it not to wind up making Rush now into this kind of giant, you know, figure." (Considering the millions of listeners and influence that Limbaugh has, most people would say Rush already is a giant figure.) When questioned about the "blow-hard bullfrog" line by fellow guest Pat Buchanan, Brown reiterated, "He is a bull frog with a bullhorn. What can I say?"
Another over-the-top Brown comment occurred on October 9, 2008. The liberal journalist appeared on "Good Morning America" and trashed Senator John McCain and his presidential campaign for being dishonorable. She derided, "Like, what happened to this man who was such, a kind of, honorable, great American? The campaign doesn't seem to live up to his sense of honor in any way. And he's really changing."
A transcript of the "Morning Joe" exchange, which occurred at 8:12am on February 27, follows:
WILLIE GEIST: Yeah, Tina. I want to get your reaction to an ad put up by a couple of liberal groups going after Rush Limbaugh as, sort of, the new symbol or father of the Republican Party. Let's watch this ad
[AFSCME and Americans United for Change Ad]
AD: An economy in crisis. A President determined to act. But, what did Republican leaders say to President Obama's jobs and recovery plan?
SENATOR MITCH MCCONNELL: No.
ANNOUNCER: What did they say to 3.5 million jobs?
CONGRESSMAN JOHN BOEHNER: No.
ANNOUNCER: What did they say to tax cuts for 95 percent of working Americans?
CONGRESSMAN ERIC CANTOR: No.
ANNOUNCER: What did they say to rebuilding roads, bridges and schools?
[montage of Republican leaders saying "no."]
ANNOUNCER: So, who are Republican leaders listening to?
RUSH LIMBAUGH: I want him to fail.
ANNOUNCER: Tell them America won't take no for an answer anymore.
[Ad ends.]
GEIST: So, the party of no has become the buzz term of the last couple days.
BROWN: I adore the "party of no." I think it is wonderful. The only thing I do regret though is that this giant, you know, blow-hard bullfrog, you know, Rush Limbaugh is being turned into this big icon. I mean, this is a great ad for Rush Limbaugh, too. So, you know, I love the party of no but I'd love it not to wind up making Rush now into this kind of giant, you know, figure.
GEIST: Be careful, because Mika has got a little bit of a crush on Rush these days.
JOE SCARBOROUGH: Mika has a crush on Rush. She also has got a Sarah Palin button on. Either she's gone to the right or she appreciates irony a great deal more than I originally-
MIKA BRZEZINSKI: I do appreciate irony. And I would just like to clarify about Rush. I just think he has tremendous communication skills.
SCARBOROUGH: He really does.
PAT BUCHANAN: Tina- Tina- Pat Buchanan. Can I ask you to elaborate on the phrase "blow-hard bullfrog?"
BROWN: He is a bullfrog with a bullhorn. What can I say?

Rush makes sense

If one listens to Rush Limbaugh(and most people who criticize him do not) you would find he makes sense and is not a radical. Everytime someone goes on a tirade about Rush just ask them...."have you listened to his full show?". 99% will say know but "they have read about him" or they "heard a story on him". I've been listening for 10+ years. And he is very factual. I would challenge anyone to find 1 thing he says incorrect

It is a huge joke. The fact that she thinks by making this silly little commercial someone is making Rush an icon? LOL. Paging what is there in Tina Brown's little brain: He already IS an icon, you NY liberal twit! Waugh's estate should sue!

Rush is
February 27, 2009 - 12:19 ET by NorthCoasterRush is his own man! He is a conservative commentator with a very large audience. I listen quite often and he even has Libeerals who are regular listeners.
As for his being a leader of the Republicans, the Republicans would not be in the predicament that they are in today if they were listening to him! That goes for Hannity too as they both were on top of the conservative issues that RINOS in the Republican party caved on to attempt to be bipartisan.
Well he's primarily an antagonist
February 27, 2009 - 12:30 ET by nwahsRush is primarily an antagonist. He's a commentator second. Rush could tell you the sky was blue in a way that would irritate you. That's his shtick. No problem with that in entertainment. But when that model is brought to politics it leads to the GOP becoming irrelevant. Flame a way ( and as a NewBuster writer so eloquently wrote on another subject) "there it is and there it'll stay." :)

February 27, 2009 - 13:06 ET by thebutlerdiditYou are entitled to your opinion. I can't say I share it, as I have stated here before, I have met Rush a couple of times, in a semi-private setting, and he is a warm, humble, and generous man in person. He has been wonderful to my father, he sent him a very nice gift this Christmas, as he has done every year for the last 5. Come June, my Dad will surely get something for his b'day, also. The gifts are, of course, great, but the personal letters mean the most to our family. I'm sure all the other people whom he does things like this for, and all the people who benefit from his charities and huge donations feel the same as I do.

February 27, 2009 - 13:11 ET by Cool ArrowThat's his shtick. No problem with that in entertainment.
And when Obama says "I inherited this crisis" is he being an entertainer? It certainly is antagonistic.
Why must you continue to
February 27, 2009 - 13:30 ET by fitzfongWhy must you continue to parade your ignorance here? You've shown time and time again that you do not listen to Limbaugh, so you haven't the first clue what you're talking about. Ah, poor nwahs is irritated by Rush Limbaugh's "tone" (whatever the hell that's supposed to mean). The reason you get "flamed" is because you contribute nothing of substance to the discussion. You employ the standard cliches about how he's an "entertainer" or an "antagonist", but you never deal in specifics (you know, the ideological disagreements you have with him). For example, Limbaugh speaks clearly, rationally and specifically as to why he believes cuts to the marginal income tax rate stimulate growth and lead to more tax revenues collected by the Federal Government. He spells it out step-by-step. But you wouldn't know. Drones like you are not intellectually capable of cutting through the pop culture clutter of "feelings", so you drop lazy, uninformed, meaningless non sequiturs like "bomb thrower". I could understand your personal animosity for the guy if you ever addressed specifically what your problem is with him. But instead, you settle for releasing nothing but trite, self-indulgent gas...a complete waste of bandwidth.
But when that model is brought to politics it leads to the GOP becoming irrelevant.
By the way, genius, when has "that model" ever been brought into politics? And if it has been brought in, how has it led to the "GOP becoming irrelevant"? In other words, nwahs, prove that wasn't just another of your substance-free throwaway lines...if you can.

I don't have a personal problem with Rush
February 27, 2009 - 13:40 ET by nwahsI don't state my personal problem with Rush because I don't have a personal problem with Rush. Being an antagonist for the sake of entertainment is not bad, and I have no problem with it. I have a problem with people who think its a good move to adopt his antagonistic shtick into politics.
But its good to see you're open to dissent :)

February 27, 2009 - 14:43 ET by NorthCoasterRush is not just an antagonist. He often proposes a solution to the problem in question. I heard him propose dividing the stimulus bill expenditures along party lines based roughly on the percentages in Congress as a solution to having Republican input.
What is truly wrong with Congress and the President now is the excessively exhuberant "Dancing in The Endzone" that is going on because of the results of the last election. The last true landslide for President was for Reagan in 1980 and for Congress in 1994. This time the election went just slighty in favor of the Democrats in both Presidential and congressional elections. Since both Congress and the President are Democrat, There is a concerted effort to for changes through.
After the election of 1994, the much reviled Newt Gingrich put in place rules that required the consideration of Democrat input in bills before the House. This was done so everyone could be heard. Nancy Pelosi just rescinded the rules so now only the Dems get heard in the House.

February 27, 2009 - 20:55 ET by nwahs"Rush is not just an antagonist."
Rush refers to himself as a "lovable little fuzzball." Now do you think he might be using sarcasm and a "sticky brier" might be a little closer to what he's doing? "Lovable little fuzzballs" don't grate on people, briers do.
If anyone ever talks to Rush ask him if he considers himself an antagonist. I think he'll answer you honestly and you might be surprised.
And the general sat and the lines on the map

Depends on how you define the word.
February 28, 2009 - 02:21 ET by RESTLESS 1Antagonist is not necessarily a derisive term. If the "hero" is really a zero, then the antagonist might just be the good guy.
The way things stand now, I consider Rush one of the rightful antagonists.

Once again with the empty
February 27, 2009 - 15:36 ET by fitzfongOnce again with the empty platitudes and unsupported blanket statements. Yawn.
I am perfectly open to dissent. So far, however, your "dissent" amounts to "I don't like Limbaugh because I don't like him". And, since you seem to lack the ability to support your position with any substance (i.e. "I disagree with him on this position because x..." or "on such-and-such an occasion, he made x claim, said y thing about z, therefore I oppose him..."), you resort to lame ad hominems like "carnival barker", "antagonistic", etc...then try to play the victim when others call BS. I'm not "flaming" you because you don't like Rush Limbaugh...that's your business...but I am calling you out because you constantly use lazy cliches and evasive non sequiturs as the only means of "support" for your self-important declarations.
"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." -Winston Churchill
See, you 're making up quotes.
February 27, 2009 - 19:58 ET by nwahsI posted about 3 messages in this thread and several in other threads, yet you resort to making up quotes by me, e.g.,
"I am perfectly open to dissent. So far, however, your "dissent" amounts to "I don't like Limbaugh because I don't like him". "
I never said that. I never implied that. I've said using Rush's shtick as a political tactic or model, is a mistake. He's an antagonist. Antagonism doesn't work very well in the political arena. Of course he has good ideas but he packages them in the most antagonistic way as possible. Because thats what he does! George Will has good ideas also, but he doesn't preface every single one with "I told you so" or "no one else in the world is smart enough to think of this." I'm saying that doesn't work in the political arena. I'm saying its not a style for GOP candidate to aspire to.
And please don't make up quotes when you quote me.
And the general sat and the lines on the map
Moved from side to side.
At first, you were mildly
February 27, 2009 - 21:51 ET by fitzfongAt first, you were mildly amusing. Now you're just sad. Must I humiliate you further by explaining what is meant by "amounts to", or would you prefer to keep what little dignity you may have left and stipulate that you were making a dishonest attempt to misdirect the argument by saying that I quoted you? I was not directly quoting you, and you know it.
And please, spare us the George Will red herring. For starters, George Will is not a full-fledged conservative. Like Fred Barnes, David Brooks, Bill Kristol, Bill Bennett, Newt Gingrich and countless others, he is a Beltway conservative...meaning that at the first sight of inside Washington populist resistance, he will moderate or simply abandon his conservative principles to maintain a facade of being "reasonable", "measured", "polite" or, most importantly, "classy". The George Will conservatives become punching bags because they would rather hang on to their dignified reputations than to stand up for their beliefs. And if you think that the George Will approach works in the political arena, you obviously missed the last two election cycles when the George Will conservatives got rolled by the Chuck Schumer/Rahm Emmanuel/Howard Dean liberals.

I see you are a legend in your own mind
February 27, 2009 - 23:28 ET by nwahsFirst off you're not humiliating anyone. You have a high regard for yourself and thats evident in your profile which is longer than NewsBuster's Publisher's, Executive Editor's, Managing Editor's, and Associate Editor's profiles - combined. Who the hell cares which soccer rules you play under?? Do you find that even a little odd? So if your goal is humiliation, I would assume you have esteem problems which would account for 2 page bio where most people write "I like pie and icecream." You have Fitz's lifelong adventures.
Most people discuss. You humiliate. What are you 16 ?
You tipped your hand. You're a child. Go back to Warcraft.
I explained to you twice my point, and you demonstrate a need to "duel." I don't babysit. CYA hero.
" I was not directly quoting you, and you know it."
I damn well know it. I told you, I didn't say that or even imply your quote. Yet with all those messages up there, you can't furnish a quote remotely close to the one you posted. Thats why you faked a quote/implication. Do you find it a little strange you are arguing against something you made up?
And you call Rush Limbaugh
February 27, 2009 - 23:33 ET by fitzfongAnd you call Rush Limbaugh antagonistic? Let me get this straight...you get your a** handed to you, and rather than defending your position with what little you have left, you look at my profile to see if you can launch a limp personal attack? Swing-and-a-miss-batta! As long and self-indulgent as you think my description is (and I'm not disputing your position), at least I can say you read mine. I haven't bothered to check your profile because...well, you forced me to say it...you're just not that interesting. I would invite the circling vultures to the party, but I don't think there's any of you left.

February 28, 2009 - 08:26 ET by Sergeant ROCKI think he just likes anatgonizing people here with his pointless blather about Rush knowing damn well he is very popular with conservatives for any number of reasons.
He must be an Obama fan with his insistance that the GOP shouldn't 'model' their politics after Rush. In other words - Don't listen to Rush Limbaugh. Actually, it is because the GOP didn't listen to Rush that the GOP finds itself in their current situation.

AntagonismDoesn't Work?
February 28, 2009 - 08:11 ET by GeneralAlYou say antagonism doesn't work? How do you think the Commiecrats stole their majorities? For eight years there was nothing but antagonism from Digger O' Harry to Morticia Pelosi! Add to that, "Eddie Haskell" Durbin and Chuckie "Linberger Cheese" Shumer for good measure on the political side. We can't forget Chris "Thrilled Leg" Matthews, Katie "No Brain" Couric, Keith "Total BS" Olberman, and Charlie "No Mel" Gibson. Every last one of these so called newspeople and all the Communist Dems who called for bi-partisanship are as antagonistic as you can get. It got them into the majority. The Republicans need to grow a pair and meet these clowns head on. The same goes for Morning Joe and the rest of the so called conservative journalist crowd!

Is that who Hannity is referring to when he says - I don't get on the radio and say I'm conservative, but when I'm on TV I have to be liberal to keep that job.. something like that.
I haven't heard a name when he's made that comment, but he should. They should be called out publically.

Hey TINA
February 27, 2009 - 12:21 ET by Lord ErondIf we have to have our air polluted by jackasses of the likes of Chris "The Leg" Matthews, Rachel "Madcow" Maddow and Keith "I'm just a stupid partisan a--hole with no facts" Olbermann (aka Bathtub Boy), then you can deal with Rush.

"What you can not enforce, do not command" -Sophocles-
And that's going to be the biggest lie in history
February 27, 2009 - 12:27 ET by Lord ErondI love the liberal groups who keep including Rush's "I want him to fail" comment without putting it in the context in which it was said. But why should they do that? It doesn't make their case for them in that format. And what kills me is that they think they're being honest and forthright when that whole ad is based on a fundamental lie.

Let me see if I can clear
February 27, 2009 - 12:27 ET by TexasteacherLet me see if I can clear this up for this dips*** moron...
The liberal democrat party is the party of "no".
Can you own guns? No.
Can you pick what kind of health care you get? No.
Will you get rewarded for paying your mortgage on time? No.
Can you send your child to the school of your choice? No.
Can you drive whatever kind of car you want? No.
Do I have the right to work hard and become as wealthy as I want? No.
Does your "plan" provide actual stimulus? No.
Can I practice my religion as I see fit? No.
Does the democratic process of voting count in California? No.
Can I keep more of my money from my monthly paycheck? No.
Isn't giving someone a tax credit when they don't pay taxes called "welfare"? No.
Do you have a plan for when those "shovel-ready" jobs are finished? No.
Do you care about WINNING the Iraq war in an honorable way instead of "ending" it? No.
Can I have an intellectual disagreement with someone of a different race without being called racist? No.
Is there anyone besides white Christian males that are allowed in your eyes to be a conservative? Hell no.
Can you actually consider "context" when trying to misquote someone for your own benefit? No.
Do you not realize that the "jobs" being "created" by this bill are temporary at best AND that there are more permanent jobs that will actually go away? No.
Do you realize that your savior obama is nothing but a lying shyster sack of s***? No.
They'll figure that last one out eventually.
So you see Tina, its the liberals that are the party of "no". And about the "blow-hard" thing, remember the glass houses thing. You elected a buffoon to the highest office in the land ONLY because he can talk real pretty. I mean, come on. The moron still thinks he's on the campaign trail. If you have to go out and campaign for a freaking SPENDING BILL, rest assured that the American people don't want it.
obama's notion of bi-partisanship is telling conservatives to shut up and do what he wants.

February 28, 2009 - 20:03 ET by KimberlyMake do with the old too, TINA
February 27, 2009 - 12:32 ET by Lord ErondThis ad is assinine too. When are we going to realize in this country that we can't always just spend money on things no matter how badly we 'think' we need it? Why spend more money on schools that are just going to make sure that we have the worst ranking of 12th graders in the world? We have to set priorities and those priorities don't include mammoth spending on Acorn, condoms and Glo-bull warming projects.

I know all about their combined reasons, from the Fairness Doctrine on down, I think they fear he may possibly run for Prez....after-all, all of his life has been trashed for years by the left in various ways..including trying to have him do time...they will do anything to stifle this man, short of murder.

No correction even in mind...so glad you posted that...I just was adding a line in that Rush always uses regarding Rio Linda with the time thing...lol.
Btw...I do find it very interesting that Rush is going to close this out...I'm telling you, I do think it is more than him sticking it back to the msm in the eyes...or even just the Fairness Doctrine...I'm telling you, if we don't have a real conservative with fire in his belly, I think he is mulling it over in his mind to run....CPAC is no little thing with the repub/conservative party whatsoever.
I know he doesn't want to do as such, I know as he says he doesn't want to give up his freedom, but I do believe he loves this country too much to see it being destroyed as it is, bit by bit, right before our very eyes....now it is being done in HUGE chunks, not just bit by bit...so anger is seething...all over the place.
anyway, enough of my rant for now...I am so looking forward to the speech he gives and the reaction from the msm, you wanna' bet that msnbc may not be back on at the time slot just because of Rush?
Going to be interesting.... ;-)

I mean, the Communists hate him anyway as he's a threat to their ideology. But, those that listen to him, or don't listen to his show but understand where he's coming from aren't going to buy this propaganda.
Kinda weird if you ask me. There again, it did work against Sarah Palin...but, she was a relative unknown and unlike The One she and McCain had no quick fixes to promise (as no real Republican ever would concerning the economy...other than maybe leave it alone, cut Fed Spending and taxes).

February 27, 2009 - 19:45 ET by FastEdIt seems that liberal group think has given us, by accident, one of their code words - Do ALL, libs have the fall back speech pattern that includes "You Know?"??
The 'you', belongs to those of us who haven't had the Kool-Aid, while the 'know' is just NO, the attempted mis-direction has been taken as bad grammer/speech/stammer - the phrase is YOU - NO!, the belief being they actually "know" better, being liberal and "smater".

February 28, 2009 - 07:34 ET by GeneralAlSo often this happens with the libs as they get power. They are so caught up in themselves with their greed for power that they think they are infallible. It is only a matter of time before they steal more gold than their boat will hold and they sink! This ad will not only increase Rush's audience, it will add to the Republican base. Viewers will see the GOP as adopting the conservative view espoused by Rush and return support to the party. This is the "Third Rail" for the Commiecrats. Even as a listener to Rush, some of his comments infuriate me. In the long run, however, he articulates most of the views I hold and the left is gunning for a huge target [No pun intended]!
