New Yorker Editor Compares Rush Limbaugh to Klansman Bull Connor

New Yorker senior editor Hendrik Hertzberg appeared on Wednesday's "Morning Joe" and compared Rush Limbaugh to 1960s segregationist and Ku Klux Klan member Bull Connor. He also linked Barack Obama to Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King. According to Hertzberg, "And I'm not saying that Obama is Martin Luther King or that Rush Limbaugh, the leader of the opposition, is Bull Connor. But the dynamic is very similar." [Audio available here.]

Hertzberg, who once wrote for Newsweek, was on the MSNBC program to promote his new article that touts President Obama for embracing "Gandhian hardball" in the mold of the civil rights movement. Specifically, the New Yorker editor asserted that Obama used this strategy in the way that he fought congressional Republicans over the stimulus bill. Hertzberg told "Morning Joe" host Joe Scarborough, "You know, when, when [Martin Luther] King offered non-violence, when the civil rights movement came out and was non-violent and then the other side greeted it with fire hoses and clubs, nobody said, 'Oh, King has failed in his effort to have non violence.'"

(It should be pointed out that Bull Connor, the Alabama public safety commissioner in the '60s, was a Democrat, thus making Hertzberg's comparison even more faulty.) Scarborough began the segment by reading from the New Yorker article. The conservative host offered an aside that the piece made him want to "throw up in my mouth a little."

Hertzberg wrote in the February 23, 2009 issue:

Fifty years ago, the civil-rights movement understood that nonviolence can be an effective weapon even if—or especially if—the other side refuses to follow suit. Obama has a similarly tough-minded understanding of the political uses of bipartisanship, which, even if it fails as a tactic for compromise, can succeed as a tonal strategy: once the other side makes itself appear intransigently, destructively partisan, the game is half won. Obama is learning to throw the ball harder. But it’s not Rovian hardball he’s playing. More like Gandhian hardball.

Later in the segment, Scarborough attacked the notion that the stimulus bill was bipartisan. He derided, "But in my mind- and you've seen the show, I try to be somewhat down the middle as much as I can- um, Barack Obama offered a cocktail party and invitation to the Super Bowl."

For more on this topic, see a previous NewsBusters posting.

A partial transcript of the February 18 segment, which aired at 8:30am, follows:

JOE SCARBOROUGH: Welcome back, we're having a debate about the 1990s right now with senior editor and political writer of the New Yorker, Hendrik Hertzberg, who wrote this in the latest issue of The New Yorker: "50 years ago the civil rights movement understood that nonviolence can be effective weapon even if, or especially if the other side refuses to follows suit. Obama has a similarly tough-minded understanding of the political uses of bipartisanship. Which, even if it fails as a tactic for compromise can succeed as a tonal strategy once the other side makes itself appear intransigently, destructively partisan, the game is half won. Obama is learning how to throw the ball harder. But it's not Rovian hardball he's playing, it's more like-" I'm going to throw up in my mouth a little bit when I say this but I'm going to get the sentence out- "Gandhian hardball."

...

8:32

SCARBOROUGH: Did Gandhi go to the British and say "I won?" You're talking about How it's not Rovian. I thought it was a very Rovian display over the past week, where Rahm Emanuel was bragging about Obama mocking Republican people. Obama telling Republican senators, "Hey, I won. We're going to write the bill the way we want to write it." That's Gandhian?

HENDRIK HERTZBERG (The New Yorker): You got to learn a little bit more about what the Indian independence movement was really like. It was a whole of people and they weren't all wearing loin cloths. But this is- This is- I'm making this comparison, essentially, between the civil-rights movement and, and Obama. And I'm not saying that Obama is Martin Luther King or that Rush Limbaugh, the leader of the opposition, is Bull Connor. But the dynamic is very similar. You know, when, when King offered non-violence, when the civil rights movement came out and was non-violent and then the other side greeted it with fire hoses and clubs, nobody said, "Oh, King has failed in his effort to have non- violence."

SCARBOROUGH: But, but, I mean, Barack Obama in your mind, in the mind of people that write for the New Yorker, Barack Obama offered bipartisanship. But in my mind- and you've seen the show, I try to be somewhat down the middle as much as I can- um, Barack Obama offered a cocktail party and invitation to the Super Bowl. What did Barack Obama offer to make himself Gandhian?

HERTZBERG: One third of his package was tax cuts. One third.

SCARBOROUGH: To who?

HERTZBERG: Oh, sorry, but it was to people who actually need and might spend the money.

SCARBOROUGH: To who?

HERTZBERG: Not to the rich. In other words, is your test that if you don't give a lot of money to the rich, a lot of tax cuts to the rich, then you're, then you're what? You're not bipartisan?

SCARBOROUGH: Your argument, though, is he gave tax cuts and, so, he was bipartisan. But, I don't know a single Republican in Washington that would give $80 billion in earned income tax credits, which most Republicans see as income tax cuts for people who don't pay income taxes. So, we can debate that. And you can take the traditionally liberal side and I can take the traditionally conservative side. But, it ain't bipartisanship to put in $80 billion of that.

Holder Calls U.S. ‘Nation of Cowards’ on Race Matters
In a speech to Justice Department employees marking Black History
Month, (liberal democrat) Attorney General Eric Holder said the
workplace is largely integrated but Americans still self-segregate on
the weekends and in their private lives.

(liberal democrat) Attorney General Eric Holder described the United
States Wednesday as a nation of cowards on matters of race, saying most
Americans avoid discussing unresolved racial issues.

In a speech to Justice Department employees marking Black History
Month, Holder said the workplace is largely integrated but Americans
still self-segregate on the weekends and in their private lives.

“Though this nation has proudly thought of itself as an ethnic
melting pot, in things racial we have always been and continue to be,
in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards,” said Holder,
nation’s first black (liberal democrat) attorney general. AP 2.18.09

CRAWFISH NOTE: Its what liberals do…whine, cry,
call names and slam their country…this is only the beginning of many
dozens of these “butt chews” about YOU, the awful disgusting uncaring
American (after ten trillion for social services-poverty). Its what
angry unhappy people do (aka liberals 24-7).

Notice the “unresolved racial issues” were not mentioned…hey, how
about 76% fornication babies, high crime and school dropout rates?
I forgot, reality and responsibility are never liberal options. This is
the “era of personal responsibility”…ha, ha, ha…suckers.
You are too dumb (by democrat standards) to even pick your grilling or
game day friends. So how is that a gov-meant issue?

Then we are told Obama = Lincoln or MLK...

So am I the only one who wonders why that when lefties want to hold up one of their own, they compair that person to a Republican/Conservative? When the want to demonize an opponent, they compair them to a Dem/Socialist? Says alot about history if you axe me.

Hay, DUmmie, Gandhi never gave anyone a "tax cut," or even a tax credit for that matter. Gandhi told people to STOP paying taxes on the salt they produced themselves.  Gandhi was a tax adversary, not a tax credit supplier.

Hendrik

Rush is definitely more like Martin Luther and Obama is more of a big Bull$#!tter.

The Fuhrer und Reichskanzler

Herr Hertzberg is an Obama propagandist similar to the propagandists that supported Adolf Hitler (The Fuhrer und Reichskanzler). Joseph Goebbels was Hitler's Minister of Propaganda and said that "A good government can no more exist without propaganda than propaganda can exist without good government."

The American people will suffer with Obama just as the Jewish peolple suffered with Hitler and Goebbels. Goebbels was an extreme anti-Semite who called for the "lying mouths of Jews to be stuffed!"

Rush Limbaugh tells the truth. But remember the words of George Orwell; " During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act."  Stay awake, people!!

Short Memories on Those Libs, Huh?

According to Hertzberg, "And I'm not saying that Obama is Martin Luther King or that Rush Limbaugh, the leader of the opposition, is Bull Connor. But the dynamic is very similar.

Ya know, when King offered non-violence, when the civil rights movement came out and was non-violent, and then the other side greeted it with firehoses and clubs, nobody said, "Oh, King has failed in his effort to have non-violence."

Hendrik Hertzberg?

Sounds a lot like Heinrich Himmler.

Even looks a little like him, too. All he needs is a buzz cut and round glasses. The propaganda he already has down pat.

I wonder if Obama will tap this goober to run his so-called civilian "security" force?

Our clueless political leaders are about to drive us all over a cliff. The time to HITM is now-before we go over.

Acorn is the cadre for the

Acorn is the cadre for the civilian security force, also known as the S.A. or Sturmabteilung, you know the Brownshirts. What else on Earth could Acorn do with 5 billion dollars in stimulus money. Oh yes, the Savior, or Fuhrer if you wish, is setting up his private army just as he said he would. I expect "Chrystal Nacht" any old time now. Are the liberal Jews scared to death yet? If not, they should be. "Amerika ist Obama,  Obama ist Amerika".

Rush Limbaugh...leader of the opposition???

Rush Limbaugh... leader of the opposition? I do not believe that Rush "Ma-ha-rushie" is the leader of anything, other than his own radio show, where as an American citizen, he can voice under the rights of 'Free Speech" his own humble opinion. Leave it to a stupid; liberal collage educated, editor from "The New Yorker" to equate a conservative thinker, voicing his own opinion, to a Democratic-Segregationist racist member of the Ku Klux Klan.

America! We can not let these Marxists do anything that will threaten EVERYONES right to free speech.

HERTZBERG? Are you a Nazi?

Sorry, maggiep...

Sorry, maggiep....

The umpire overruled that last line call and the match goes to a fifth set.

The Republicans have on several past occasions elevated Rush to, or bestowed upon him, at least a figurative "leadership" status.  For example, he was the keynote speaker to the incoming freshmen Republicans in 1994 and made an honorary member of Congress.  He has been wined and dined and slept over at the Bush White House and been called a "national treasure" by Republican leaders.  His show was also used as the platform from which the Bush/Cheney team launched its election bid in 2000.

Jer

Very Well Said, urbuggenme!

It's not like Rush is a racist like Rev. Wright or anything.  Rush leads his own thoughts through the airwaves.  People can listen or not. How much more American can that be?

It's not like he is saying and doing treasonous things like the NYT or Senator Dick Durbin.

Ya see, Hendrik Hertzberg, we can make comparisons all day long.  Only ours would be true.

A Democratic

Jack Bauer beat me to it; -BULL CONNOR WAS A DEMOCRATIC!!

These airheads try to make these connections all the time...

These airheads try to make these connections all the time, but it just doesn't cut it. No, the dynamic isn't similar at all; there is no connection between what Bull Connor did and anything associated with conservative talk radio today. In fact, if a connection exists at all, I would suggest that the bitterness expressed by some of the Air America hosts is better represented by the vicious behavior of Democrats of the old south through the 60s. Of course, you can make comparisons of anything you wish if truth has no value to you.

Obama is more like an invading general that MLK

Obama as MLK and Limbaugh as Bull Connor?  Please.  Far from non-violent, Obama and his cohorts have rammed a massive part of their agendas down our collective throats.  Limbaugh was able to stir up the Republicans to resist, but he was unable to stop Porkulus.  Obama is more like an invading general with an overwhelming army at his command.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

Rush Doesn't Need Help; But.....

Rush has 3 hours a day to take on morons like this guy, so my paragraphs will have little influence on this.  I find it amazing how liberals make comparisons,  Obama to Martin Luther King, Jr. right after a holiday who doesn't know who he is and just smile away.  Then we have Rush and Bull Connor, if you were to ask 100 people on the street who Bull Connor was, they couldn't tell you.  You do, however, assume that this guy is talking about someone bad, since you know he doesn't like Limbaugh.

I hope Limbaugh takes this comparison and educates his audience. Bull Connor was a Democrat, defending Democrat laws, in a Democrat Controlled State.  Comparing Rush Limbaugh to any Democrat is an insult.

Election 2008-God's way of showing us that elections count.

Wrong Party

Heindrik Von DixieKrat Hertzberg.  Try again.

You might want to bring those fire hoses, clubs and German shepherds too, for the full dramatic effect next time though.

Then you can cut Barky's "folks" a check to keep from throwing up in your mouth a little, and put the blame on the divisive Republicans like Rush, MLK and Harriet Tubman, after which All will be forgiven.

If Dimocrats had an ounce of sense

They would be propping Rush up. Shooting beer out of your nose never goes out of style.

And the general sat and the lines on the map
Moved from side to side.

I would say Obama is more like Carter...only weaker

You know, liberals really aren't that bright.  They have this set in stone image of what they consider to be the facts.  I don't see how Limbaugh could be considered in any way to Bull Conner...except that both are white.

Angry White Dude

www.angrywhitedude.c...

Let me go out on a limb

Let me go out on a limb here and say that Rush probably opposes hand-outs for blacks and whites alike.

The Radical Left instantly paints anybody as a Klansmen or a NAZI if they oppose 'programs' that give people benefits based upon their race because it's demeaning to the recipients and unfair to those Americans that do work for what they have, and perpetuates State-sponsored serfdom.

The Communists want to give away based on their race, because they figure non-whites are too stupid and messed up to make it on their own.  Tell me...who are truly the racists and bigots?

I'm all for a helping hand, but trying to drag somebody who doesn't want to walk is tiresome and slows me down.

One of the 24% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 89% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory.

Who's like Gov. Orval Faubus? Who's like Pres. Eisenhower?

In 1957, Democratic Governor Orbal Faubus used the Arkansas National Guard in order to PREVENT black students from attending Little Rock's Central High School.

In 1957, Republican president Dwight D. Eisenhower ("Ike") sent troops to Little Rock in order to HELP black students attend Little Rock's Central High School.

Truth is irrelevant in "the media"

There is so much that is wrong with what Hertzberg believes and espouses, how can he get these kinds of gigs? Where do I get a job like his? Maybe I'm over-qualified, CTTOI, coz I deal in facts, mostly.

"Tax cuts" to folks who don't pay taxes anyway are not "tax cuts." They're just another entitlement program, and Scarborough is right: there's nothing "conservative" or "bipartisan" about them.

People who pay taxes are not necessarily "rich." And justifying taking from someone because they have more than you is still theft. You can argue that they should be willing to give more, but taking from them to finance your own charitable inclinations is still stealing. When all is said and done, Robin Hood WAS a thief! (And these guys are no Robin Hoods, just btw....)

"Gandhian hardball?" What is that, even? I mean, how would you define it? Aggressive non-violence? Passive violence? It's just an oxymoron, it can't mean anything! But it's a nice sound-bite, isn't it? And these people get paid for garbage like this!

And, finally, comparing Rush Limbaugh to Bull Conner is just insane. Conner was a Democrat! You can call Rush a lot of things if you want, but "Democrat" is definitely not one of them!

hertzberg & tax cut FACTS

Since the passage of the '03

tax cuts all we've heard from the marxist left is how they benefitted the rich only.  What bulls**t. If my conservative memory recalls, the bill lowered EVERYBODY'S marginal rate by 10%; it reduced the minimum rate from 15% to 10%; it removed 5 million people from the tax rolls; it increased the child care credit from $500 to $1,000. These are all FACTS.We'll find out for sure after they expire. Sure if you're in the higher bracket, paying more in taxes to begin with, a 10% reduction to you is a larger number than a 10% cut of a lower number. 10% of 100,000 is 10,000. 10% of 10,000 is 1,000.  Both are 10% reductions.I suppose it's better to increase someone's income tax to rebate taxes paid for Social Security and Medicare, which in effect transfers the total cost to income tax payors.  This is just. This is 'PROGRESSIVE". This is Obamanomics income redistribution.  They never answer the question, Where do the payors get the extra money from t pay these increased taxes? Eat them and lower their own lifestyles? If they can, increase the prices they charge for goods and services,(inflationary)? Obama doesn't tell you that does he, and the fawning white -guilt MSM doesn't ask.
