ABC Touts Rabid Anti-Gun Group's Statistics for Firearms Story

Neal Karlinsky, ABC, "Good Morning America" correspondent Neal Karlinsky on Thursday passed off the statistics of a liberal, rabidly pro-gun control group during a story on the 2008 election and firearms. Reporting live from Wyoming, he talked to a family who owns a number of weapons and asserted, "Yet time and time again, statistics show that firearm death rates are significantly higher in places with relaxed gun laws."

In very small font, an onscreen graphic cited his source as the Violence Policy Center (VPF). Karlinsky failed to mention that this group's web site describes itself as "the most aggressive group in the gun control movement" and proudly touted a quote from the National Rifle Association calling the organization "the most effective...anti-gun rabble rouser in Washington." The VPF even has an NRA bashing section on its web page, slurring "NRA family values" and going after the late Charlton Heston. Would Karlinsky cite the NRA as a neutral, independent source? It's not likely. So, why is it okay to pass off the VPF as one?

Speaking of the NRA, America's largest gun rights group claims that of states which have lenient, right-to-carry laws, "Violent crime rates since 2003 have been lower than anytime since the mid-1970s. Since 1991, 23 states have adopted RTC, the number of privately-owned guns has risen by nearly 70 million, and violent crime is down 38%." Of course, Karlinsky featured no opposing data in his piece.

And although he was relatively positive and friendly towards the gun-owning Allan family featured in the segment, at no time did Karlinsky mention the high crime in places that have very strict gun control, such as the District of Columbia.

A transcript of the segment, which aired at 8:36am, follows:

DIANE SAWYER: And when they say they want to hear more about the issue, of course, we've gone out 50 states in 50 days to do just that. Listen to people talk about the issues that matter to them. Sometimes, regionally, sometimes in their very own states. It's an ABC News and USA Today project. And this morning, we're going to look at Wyoming, a hot-button political issue there, firearms. And people in the cowboy state are sticking to their guns as you'll see, ABC's Neal Karlinsky.

NEAL KARLINKSY: In Jackson Hole, Wyoming, the buffalo don't just roam, they block traffic. Here among the Grand Teton mountains, overflowing with wildlife, there's one more sure-fire image of the American west. Guns are an indelible part of the culture here. And for families like the Allans, firearms are more a part of daily life than television.

CLARK ALLAN (gun owner): Guns are just parted of our life. You know, I've got a chain saw by the door. I've got a shovel. I've got a gun. And we use them all the time. I think living in a big city, they probably don't have chain saws and shovels by the door either.

KARLINSKY: Clark Allan is a little prosecutor and he's looking for a candidate who believes in as few gun restrictions as possible. When it comes to the election, guns are an issue. And a certain vice presidential candidate has changed a lot of minds out here. For the Allan family, one look of Sarah Palin hunting just like them, posing for a photograph that looks very much like their own, and the family's choice for president was settled.

KRISTEN ALLAN (gun owner): The fact that she hunts, fishes, lives in Alaska and, like I said, she is a mother and, you know, she is a strong woman.

KARLINSKY: How many guns do you have?

CLARK ALLAN: Probably between 20 and 25.

KARLINSKY: You don't know exactly. You got a lot.

CLARK ALLAN: Don't know exactly. I guess some people would call it a lot. I think it's not that many. We need more.

KARLINSKY: Daughter Ashleigh, a straight-a student and stone-cold shot says the opinion people of guns out here is very different than it is in big cities

ASHLEIGH ALLAN: I tell you, we're some of the safest kids with guns there can be. It's kids that don't know what guns are. That's when it becomes unsafe.

KARLINSKY: Yet time and time again, statistics show that firearm death rates are significantly higher in places with relaxed gun laws. [Small onscreen graphic: 2005 Violence Policy Center] Wyoming recently ranked 11th in the nation, while New York was 46th. What are the rules around the house with guns?

STUART ALLAN (son): Um, you have to have a grown-up with you to see them.

KARLINSKY: Out here, guns aren't just an issue on the ballot or part of a debate over crime, they're a way of life. For "Good Morning America," Neal Karlinsky, ABC News, Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Its a proven fact that when

Its a proven fact that when good citizens are allowed to have guns, crime goes down. But facts don't usually get in the way of leftists pushing their agenda.

Why is it the

Why is it the anti-self-defense crowd never uses statistics from the use of guns by inner-city gang bangers?

Could it be that doing so would show that it's the ILLEGAL use of guns that is the problem, not the guns themselves, or the law-abiding gun owners who keep them for legitimate self-defense purposes?

they do use gang related statistics

Any time some under-18 punk kills another under 18, it's considered a "child killed by a firearm".Then there's the "accidents" where some 14 or 15 year old "accidentally" fills a pistol magazine with bullets, "accidentally" works the action, "accidentally" releases the safety and "accidentally" shoots his "friend" in the face-a "friend" from school who happened to be in a different gang, or "disrespected" him or had eyes for his girlfriend...

But yeah, they do specifically count gang violence by minors (or people who claim to be minors but aren't since there's no record or proof thanks to their illegal immigrant status) as astatistics for "all those children tragically killed by firearms!"

"to call an illegal immigrant an "undocumented alien" is the same as calling a streetcorner drug dealer an "unlicensed pharmacist".

Violence Policy Centerr

The Violence Policy Center is heavily funded by the Joyce Foundation. Guess who was once a board member of the Joyce Foundation? His initals are BHO.

Here is my proof of their funding. The MSM won't give you the proof. Oh what a tangled web we weave.

Oh no!

Oh no! Do you suppose that since the libs are so impressed with the high death rates of guns that they will now want to use them to perform abortions?

MSM wants Home invasion, to be more successful..

Hello upcountry

George Soros hired Rebecca Peters to bring about this gun confiscation. Peters and Obama are the only two who have claimed to be "citizens of the world". Soros has been financially supporting Obama. Hussein Obama has a 100% record voting against gun ownership.

I sent a letter in to the

I sent a letter in to the editor of local paper yesterday. (They take a libertariin view in editorial content.) He e-mailed me back and couldn't believe what I had said about Obama's perfect record as a gund grabber. So I sent him the websites that I looked at. One was an article from Reason magazine. I also sent this link on Obama and the Joyce Foundation. Anyway he wrote me back this AM and told me he had never heard all this about Obama. I think I made a believer out of him.  Don't have time to win them over one at a time but I'll try.

"The devil is a better theologian that any of us and is a devil still" A.W. Tozer

 Yeah, I suppose they can

Yeah, I suppose they can spout off about all the gun control they want to.  It really doesn't matter to me.  I write this knowing that they will never get any guns from folks who really want to keep them.  They are free to try of course.

The facist keep running out these canards, they will fail.

gun control

And yet DC still has 31 per 100,000. With the strictest of gun laws. 12 more per 100,000 than Louisiana and 13 more than Wyoming.

London gun crime greater than the Twin Cities

We've got about 2.5 million souls in the metro area and yet our per capita gun violence is much less than London. Right now, almost every metro in America does. We have concealed-carry and laid-back transport and use laws We have 100's of thousands of hunters and recreational (target) shooters and just plain defend-the-house gun owners. London has banned hand guns, most rifles, and most shotguns. Hmmmmmm.....

They lied. *shock* *suprise!*

Just Google gun crime statistics and you can see for yourself. Unless you consider Africa and parts of the rest of the Third world as part of this statistic then they are out and out liars. Africa basically has no laws of any kind. But even the Third World countries who do, like in the Phillipines, are overrun with Communistas and Muslim separatists packing AK-47's. I guess they must have got them at a gun show.

Statistics

Now I have an idea.

Lets look at the number of guns per capita that are about to get up and shoot somebody. Then lets look at the number of people per capita who are ready to get up and shoot somebody.

What a novel idea!

Guns the Manna of American Nourishment

These liberals just are peeing their panties that the Democrats have dropped gun control for profit and control as an issue.

The fact is rural states like Wyoming have more guns than people. They have guns in their homes, their cars, their boats, their airplanes and would have them in wedding ceremonies like liberals, but they wait for sex after marriage so there are no shotgun weddings.

The reality in rural states are as in my county of nativity in the last person shot was shot by a  Bill Clinton trained cop who trains all cops to shoot to kill now. This cop shot a goofy farmer, who literally was on medications as he was nuts who was charging him with a bat.
No need to go around shooting people to death. Just pop them in the leg and drop them for the ambulance or do as most people do and just stay the heck away from the goofy rural neighbors.

Rural people don't shoot each other. The only problems rural people ever have is eastern types flying out to go hunting and blowing up STOP signs when they are drunk.

I still advocate and when McCain Palin get into office I want a reactivation of the United States laws which had government buying firearms for people who could not afford them for the national good. It was Americas first welfare program and it was a dandy.
It could be tried out in rural states, a voucher for one gun and a thousand rounds of ammo. I would advocate a Ruger Ranch Rifle to start the program off. Be good for business and Lake City, Winchester and Federal could ramp up a few more plants turning out cheap ammunition.

America must recind the draconian BATF policies of terrorizing gun dealers, the too high prices of licenses, the too expensive nature of firearms and ammunition which liberals have implemented.

America requires a cheap food, cheap energy and cheap gun policy.
Start handing out vouchers for guns and ammunition which is an American right in the Second Amendment.

Sheesh! I've said this

Sheesh!

I've said this umpteen times:

McCain needs to bring up gun rights. Now!

Find Joe the Gun Owner and appeal to the pro gun crowd. Obama is VERY afraid of this being brought up. To me, this is THE issue that pushes McCain over the top.

I agree. Little old me was able to turn a few Dems within a matter of moments by telling them that Obama wants their guns!

But then really Neal, do you know exactly how many Bette Midler CDs you have in your collection or exactly how many times you've stuffed a 20 down some Chippendale's leather briefs?
