Liberal bias found its way into the comic strips on Sunday. "You Can With Beakman & Jax" is an educational strip that runs weekly and features answers to various science questions. The text heavy comic, which has 52 million readers and is syndicated in papers such as the Washington Post, took a shot at both religion and global warming skeptics in the October 5 edition.
Responding to question about how erasers remove pencil marks, strip writer/artist Jok Church cited an 18th century reverend, Joseph Priestley, who discovered that tree sap that could rub away pencil marks. Church wrote, "Back in the 18th century, Priestley was a reverend searching for proof in the natural world as a way of proving his religion. That meant he already knew what he wanted to prove and gathered evidence to support that belief. This is also how some folks now fight against ideas such as global warming."
The San Francisco Bay Times wrote about Church, whose comic was also the basis for the TLC program "Beakman's World," on June 26, 2008. According to writer Tom W. Kelly, "As a gay man and activist, he brings both a sensitivity free of gender pressure to each comic — 'I like to think of myself as an old-time feminist, the kind that did not say person-hole cover' — as well as an appreciation for the universe of possibilities for inquiring minds."
In the same article, Church spoke of the multi-colored star that appears in the logo of every comic strip. Kelly explained, "Church adds that he never receives hate mail from Jews, Muslims, etc.; only from Fundamentalist Christians who even complain about the five-pointed rainbow star backing the comic’s title." (Note: There does not appear to be an archive of "You Can" online.)
In a May 30, 2003 chat with WashingtonPost.com, Church discussed battling with creationists and asserted, "I think that they [creationists] just aren't prepared for the beauty of how complicated the universe is."

Priestley subjected his theology to his science...
October 7, 2008 - 09:17 ET by Ken Shepherd...not vice versa.
From wiki (see portion in bold):
An History of the Corruptions of Christianity, published by Joseph Johnson in 1782, was the fourth part of eighteenth-century Dissenting minister Joseph Priestley's Institutes of Natural and Revealed Religion (1772-74).[1]
Priestley's major argument in the Institutes is that the only revealed religious truths that can be accepted are those that also conform to the truth of the natural world. Because his views of religion were deeply tied to his understanding of nature, the text's theism rests on the argument from design. Many of Priestley's arguments descended from eighteenth-century deism and comparative religion.[2] The Institutes shocked and appalled many readers, primarily because it challenged basic Christian orthodoxies, such as the divinity of Christ and the miracle of the Virgin Birth. Priestley wanted to return Christianity to its "primitive" or "pure" form by eliminating the "corruptions" which had accumulated over the centuries. The fourth part of the Institutes, An History of the Corruptions of Christianity, became so long that he was forced to issue it separately. Priestley believed that the Corruptions was "the most valuable" work he ever published.[3]
Schofield, Priestley's major modern biographer, describes the work as "derivative, disorganized, wordy, and repetitive, detailed, exhaustive, and devastatingly argued."[4] The text addresses issues from the divinity of Christ to the proper form for the Lord's Supper. Thomas Jefferson would later write of the profound effect that Corruptions had on him: "I have read his Corruptions of Christianity, and Early Opinions of Jesus, over and over again; and I rest on them . . . as the basis of my own faith. These writings have never been answered."[5] Although a few readers such as Jefferson approved of the work, it was generally harshly reviewed because of its extreme theological positions, particularly its rejection of the Trinity.[6]

Isn't this what scientists do all the time? They make general observations and come up with theories and then gather evidence to see if the facts support or disprove their theory, right?
Only, when the the post-modernist, Humanist, Darwin-worshipping modern-day "scientists" do it, they don't bother with evidence against their preconceived beliefs, and anyone pointing out that evidence is subject to ridicule.
Comment on last quote
October 7, 2008 - 09:46 ET by bradbenj5952Here's one for Church and others to ponder.
"These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground." Genesis 2:4-6
"In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of
the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened." Genesis 7:11
Re: Kola Deep Core Drilling Project: http://designdepartm...
"To the surprise of the researchers, they did not find the expected transition from granite to basalt at 3-6 kilometers beneath the surface. Data had long shown that seismic waves travel significantly faster below that depth, and geologists had believed that this was due to a "basement" of basalt. Instead, the difference was discovered to be a change in the rock brought on by intense heat pressure, or metamorphic rock. Even more surprisingly, this deep rock was found to be saturated in water which filled the cracks. Because free water should not be found at those depths, scientists theorize that the water is comprised of hydrogen and oxygen atoms which were squeezed out of the surrounding rocks due to the incredible pressure. The water was then prevented from rising to the surface because of the layer of impermeable rocks above it."
Coincidence? You decide. But don't take too long.

Because he's a SCIENTIST--he can tell when someone writes, "Your lifestyle is an abomination before God," that it's the New Testament to blame, not the Old Testament, the Torah, or the Koran. Strange that all of these writings condemn the behavior, yet Joke Church (how ironic, that name) only sees Fundamentalist Christians as the source of his criticism. It must be blissful to be so ignorant.
I invite Mr. Church to visit Iran to pick up a "date" there. See how they treat him.
And then tell me how much PRIMARY research Al Gore has conducted on global warming. "Some people," indeed!
This reaction by a member
October 7, 2008 - 11:58 ET by mattmThis reaction by a member of the self-described "scientific community" demonstrates the religious and philosophical nature of their viewpoint. These types of people (which probably make up a minority of scientists, but they are the only ones we ever hear about through the MSM filter) are pushing a philosophy, not science.
Their philosophy is fundamentally anti-Christian. Its purpose is a religious one: to give people an intellectual basis for rejecting God and denying His existence, ignoring His authority and avoiding his judgment. And if they turn out to be right...they won't ever know it, but if they turn out to be wrong.....
"For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath showed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:" Rom. 1:18-20

For Christsake, It's Just A Cartoon!
October 7, 2008 - 23:55 ET by The7SticksIf this is the kind of complaint I hear about a rather harmless comic strip, I'd shudder to see any of you react to that episode of Family Guy on Sunday night when Peter meets Jesus working in a record store. It's just a cartoon, people. If you are going to take these things so seriously, then you really deserve to lose respect.
