Time online editor Ana Marie Cox apparently believes a dated quip by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney should be considered a "macaca moment." During a Florida event on Monday, Romney, joking with a group of young people, quoted a rather lame song by the Baha Men. After asking who had a camera, he blurted, "Who let the dogs out? Who? Who?"
Now, most people would simply smile or appreciate Romney's friendly, if somewhat dorky, sense of humor. Cox, however, at Time's "Swampland" blog, wondered, "Shouldn't it be a 'macaca moment'? I suspect he's not being pilloried for it because the moment [sic] less offensive than it is cringe-inducing..." She also described the candidate's comments, which occurred at a Martin Luther King day event, as "jive talking." (Hat tip to Hot Air, who also remembered that Cox previously went after Romney for not taking proper care of the family dog.) Is Time's online editor simply looking for a scandal, any scandal, to hit Mitt Romney with?
NewsBusters has also noted other Cox swipes at Romney, such as morphing into a theologian and telling MSNBC's Keith Olbermann, "I know Mitt Romney is not himself Christian."

January 24, 2008 - 03:11 ET by SchnikeysI remember that. Webb's campaign must have worked like crazy to spread that around for the great purpose of winning by only 0.5% of the vote or however much it was.
Isn't there a word for that? Something like "cheap-shot campaigning" or some other tactic used by those who, to some extent, are insecure in their ability to win, I'm sure.
Allen was a good man, though. I would have been glad to see him occupy his seat for another term.

"Punked" is a slang word that exists toward the negative end of the plane. It doesn't have happy/friendly/cheerful connotations. It's meaning is negative, leaning toward humiliation/disrespect.
It's roots are also clearly negative (chickened out, cowardice, for example), going back at least as far as early last century.
Hope this helps.

There's no need to back it up. It's true. Punked is a common term used by many to describe practical jokes.

I wouldn't even know how to back it up. You either know or you don't know. And b/c of your massive amount of time spent on the internet, indoors, not socializing, you simply don't know.
Punked has no negative connotation, it's a general term used for any sort of jovial banter/practical joke/embarassment.

January 24, 2008 - 11:50 ET by Six String SpiffCan we agree that the term 'punked' (gag) is used primarily by young people who even though they have been through numerous years of education STILL can't seem to understand and utilize their own language correctly? We have PLENTY of words that get twisted into something they're not when they clearly man specific things. Like Niggardly. We all remember THAT don't we? We remember the country losing it's mind over NOTHING. Use proper English. It's there for a reason. We don't need to make up words that make society dumber than it already is. ESPECIALLY the Younger generations... which I HATE to say includes myself.
PS. MTV blows. What educated adult watches that insanity?
Spiff, I see no problem
January 24, 2008 - 11:56 ET by LeonSpiff,
I see no problem if people want to use slang.
Of course it has a time and a place. For instance, I don't use slang in the office.
However, I look at it this way and you should too. My refusal to use slang in official environments distinguishes me from others my age. You stand out when you say, "yes" instead of "yeah".
So think of it as a positive. While all your peers look ridiculous, you look intelligent, polite, and poised.

January 24, 2008 - 12:12 ET by Cool ArrowI agree with much of what you said. But new words have meaning as well.
If MTV "blows", what is the literal meaning of the word "blow".
Each generation makes its own contribution to the vernacular.
It's also not lost on me that you avoided the core issue. Whether the intent of the word is to maliciously attack or a practical joke among friends. You know which it is, but I'm getting the "vibe" you won't opine further on the matter.
Punked
January 24, 2008 - 11:54 ET by Six String SpiffWoweee... Kids are REALLY stupid these days...
Here is the 'definition' of this non word we are discussing. Yo
Once again
January 24, 2008 - 12:15 ET by Cool ArrowOnce again FOX News uses the word Punked to describe the Romney video. 01/24/08 11:12. If you tune in after this commercial, I'm betting they will use it again.
FOX is only pandering to
January 24, 2008 - 13:07 ET by Six String SpiffFOX is only pandering to get ratings. If news is 'Kewl', then the children will watch too.
The Romney Prank Video is Great
January 24, 2008 - 09:35 ET by PopularTechI saw that a week ago but I still laugh when I watch it. If his sons can joke around like that all the more reason I like Romney.

January 24, 2008 - 09:37 ET by Cool ArrowAnd keeping his composure the way he did was classic. After FOX was done showing it, I had to watch it on youtube three more times.
