Cuomo: Fetal Memory 'Shocking to So Many People'

  • Bookmark and Share

A new study found that unborn babies may start to develop memories as early as thirty weeks into a pregnancy, but ABC’s “Good Morning America” ignored the study’s potential impact on the abortion debate, especially concerning late term abortion.

Reporter Sharyn Alfonsi’s July 15 segment covered the pivotal study without even mentioning abortion. Anchor Chris Cuomo attempted to broach the issue during a follow-up interview but fell short.

Alfonsi touted the study, “Day by day, a fetus goes through remarkable changes. By 30 weeks, opening and closing their eyes. Making facial expressions. And now, a new study reveals, forming memories. Yep, barely three pounds, but already able to remember. For the study, researchers used a fetal monitor to make a buzzing sound against a mother's belly. The noise and vibrations startle the fetus and it typically reacts by moving. But with repeated applications of the buzzing the fetus learns its okay and does not have to react. And four weeks later, when the fetus is buzzed again, many don't react at all, because researchers say they now remember the sound.”

During an interview with child psychologist Rahil Briggs, Cuomo somewhat obliquely approached the findings’ implications for the abortion debate. He said, “And, you know, it seems like the more we learn about fetuses, the more confidence we have that they are capable of things earlier and earlier.  You know, when life, when sustainable life, begins is a big question in our society. This sheds light on it.”

Rahil, however, disagreed- or didn’t want to address “sustainable life”- and stated, “I'm not sure that it sheds light on when sustainable life begins. What this study says is that starting at around 30 weeks gestational age, so in that last trimester, we're pretty sure that kids are laying down short-term memories and might even have a little bit longer term memories.”

Left unsaid – what do the findings mean within the context of late-term abortion? According to the Family Research Council, “late-term” refers to abortions occurring during the 28th through 39th weeks of pregnancy, or the third trimester. In 2005 over 15,000 abortions occurred past the 20-week mark in the pregnancy.

So if the study is correct, in many of those cases, the babies aborted were developed enough to have short- and perhaps long-term memory.“Good Morning America” preferred to focus its report on prenatal care. Alfonsi visited a prenatal yoga class and one pregnant woman said the class was helping her “be more conscious of my own emotional and physical state.”

The memory study, Alfonsi said, “… is proof that we need to be more careful about what experiences we expose babies to in the womb.” Like the experience of, say, murder?

Well now, memories don't

Well now, memories don't necessarily mean those babies at 30 weeks are  persons!

\sarc off

Doesn't matter, because as Her Speakerness says

The point is, is that it [when life begins] shouldn’t have an impact on the woman’s right to choose.

I didn't think it was physically possible, but this both sucks and blows.  -Bart Simpson

Her "Catholic" Speakerness

"And the Catholic Church has no clear doctrine on this, and has gone back and forth on it for hundreds of years."

Or sumptin like that.

...even at 12 weeks...

...looks like a "someone" to me...

v

...and here's one for those who can stomach the visual truth of abortion, be warned this ain't pretty.

by 22-23 weeks.. a fetus can survive

Interesting to note that by 22-23 weeks.. a fetus can survive outside the womb. It'll be a hard road for them to make it -- but they are living little human beings.

Listen up Hollywood:

Why isn't the left calling His Holiness a radical right wing hate monger?

Not if Barry's rules apply

That infant, if left on it's own will soon die. By Obama's rules, you could decide your intent was to have it aborted and leave it to die. Most people would find this disturbing, so it helps to lie about it. It also helps to have a complicit media that won't call you on your lies.

i've gotten the same results

from writing to my congress critters!

sick of hearing about a womans right choose

to murder a living human being. I remember well the lies and misinformation spread during my high school years by NOW and other left wingnuts justifying abortion...all of which science has refuted with new technology. The arguments never made sense. The classic being it's part of the womens body..bull..its a seperate unique being with completely different DNA. What about my right as a man to choose? So if she decides to have it I must provide her with support? We were told at the time that the fetus was a clump of cells not resembling a human until the third or fourth month..absolute bullsh*it. We were told it would be limited in practice and not used as contraception. Yeah, 58 million dead and counting. For those out there that have had them..start speaking up against it..cause you KNOW what you did.

A woman has the right to

A woman has the right to choose not to have sex.  THAT is her choice.  Once she has sex, if a baby is conceived her choice is over.  She chose to take a chance on getting pregnant, she needs to live with it.

That is exactly the

That is exactly the argument you will get from Feminists when you talk about men paying child support. There are actually men's groups now arguing that men should have the same rights as women and be able to terminate their obligation since a woman can terminate a pregnancy.

This is totally the wrong direction, but the logic is consistant. I put them both in the Feminist, self-centered, mindset.

THANK YOU!  I hate how

THANK YOU!  I hate how some people want to have it both ways.  If the woman chooses to have the baby, the father will have to pay child support for the next twenty years because, they'll say, "It takes two to make a baby".  And yet, if the father wants the child to be born (and the mother doesn't), he has no say in the matter because, "Its the woman's right to choose".

Strange.

da... I don't find it

da...

I don't find it strange, I find it desicable, infuriating...I always have....but more than anything, it is sad beyond words for me.

I'd call it diabolical

diabolical
 adj 1: showing the cunning or ingenuity or wickedness typical of a devil;

There is a reality called free will and we all must choose. The unthinkable insanity is that some will choose hell over heaven.

By the way..

if I hurt your feelings or you thought I was too direct, get over it and start using your brains instead of your emotions and selfish desires. Please do not ever lecture me about war or guns or any other left wing claptrap..there nothing lower than killing the innocent who can not fight back. Yeah...you have better protection and higher value for animals than you do for human beings...if I kill, it is for self defense and I give my enemy at least a fighting chance.

Murder. Simple as

Murder.

Simple as that.

Can you imagine what that baby does thru?

It hurts me to think people, especially women don't even think of that in first place...to me it's a given...a natural instinct to defend/protect at all costs....and I felt this way as a teen-ager.

I've heard all the excuses and words I can stand anymore for the defense of abortion...there is none.

bt~

I admit that at one time I considered myself to be 'kindasorta' pro-choice -- I was one of those wimps who said, "I'm pro-life for myself, but pro-choice for everyone else" even though in the back of my mind, I knew the practice was inherently wrong no matter who did it.  It wasn't until I started going back to church several years ago and became a practicing Christian that I became 100% unapologetically pro-life.

I know we all have different views on this...I'm just glad you are where you are now.  ;-)

Life begins at

Life begins at conception.  Why is that such a difficult concept to grasp.  The vast majority of development takes place during the first trimester.  The last two trimesters are mostly for growth.

It takes only 9 months not 9 years.  It's a rapid process, but these Libtards want to pretend that an unborn fetus of any age is some kind of primitive subhuman being until it can 'prove' it can survive outside the womb.  And for some of them apparently even that is not acceptable.

For a group that prides themselves on their self-proclaimed higher intellect, it's amazing how damn ignorant they can be.

One of the 34% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 61% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory (yep...approval for Congress now at 39%...do you believe that!?).

Not a difficult concept, just inconvenient.

"Life begins at conception.  Why is that such a difficult concept to grasp."

It's not a difficult concept to understand by the abortion supporters, just inconvenient.  The universal acceptance of this concept is evident when the same people who voice their support of abortion also support the preservation of breeding habitat like the streams the Salmon use to breed and produce eggs, a form of life that begins at conception and MUST be protected by the ravages of man.  Typical hypocrites, they don't even see the irony of allowing a woman to abort her child while doing everything in their power to protect the fish eggs laying at the bottom of a stream.
