Networks Barely Cover 'Jane Roe's' Arrest

  • Bookmark and Share

When a well-known individual creates a disruption at a highly public, widely televised event and is then arrested, any news organization worth the name would include the incident in its coverage of that event. Right?

Not CBS’ “Evening News with Katie Couric.” And NBC’s “Nightly News” only gave the story 21 words. On July 13, Norma McCorvey, better known as “Jane Roe” in the infamous Roe v. Wade case that made abortion legal, was arrested for disrupting Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s confirmation hearings on Capitol Hill.

As McCorvey was leaving the hearing room, she shouted that Roe v. Wade should be overturned. McCorvey was then arrested along with three others. NBC’s Pete Williams reported, “Anti-abortion rights protesters were hustled out four times for loud interruptions, including Norma McCorvey, originally the Roe of Roe v. Wade.”

ABC’s “World News with Charles Gibson”reporter Jan Crawford Greenburg closed the segment about Sotomayor’s hearing with, “And unlike any Supreme Court hearing in recent history, this one was disrupted by four antiabortion protesters. They were quickly arrested by Capitol police, but Charlie, here's an irony. One of them was Norma McCorvey. She was the anonymous Jane Roe in Roe vs. Wade. It was her case that guaranteed a woman's right to an abortion.”

Both networks failed to report McCorvey, the plaintiff in Roe v Wade, is passionately working to overturn the ruling. McCorvey is now adamantly against abortions. In 1995 she became a pro-life Christian and even started the pro-life Crossing Over Ministry.

With Sotomayor’s views on abortion somewhat unclear, McCorvey’s outburst should have received more attention from the networks. Ann Gerhart of The Washington Post, wrote, “With that, the culture wars that the Obama administration has so carefully tried to avoid forced their way back into full view.” Of course, with the networks paying little attention to the arrest, it is hard for the pivotal issue to be brought back into the spotlight.

Gerhart went on to write, “But the people to whom abortion matters most have a long attention span and are focused on 20 or 30 years down the line. Sotomayor is 55. If confirmed, she is likely to have decades ahead of her on the nation's high court. Her position on abortion isn't publicly known.” McCorvey can certainly be included that group of people who are concerned about the lack of clarity on Sotomayor’s positions. Although she attempted to highlight that concern, one of the three networks failed to cover the story and the other two barely covered it at all.

Her position on abortion isn't publicly known

Two different issues: (1) the morality of the practice; (2) the reasoning that controls the legality of the practice.

The abortion decision is just the tip of the iceberg. Most of the objectionable decisions rest on a principle of law called "substantive due process." That is a perfectly legitimate topic, and the nominee owes an honest answer.

funny how...

Funny how we got to watch the entire clip of Code Pink interrupting Condi and then being dragged out kicking and screaming.

Exactly!

I thought back to that myself yesterday...fake blood and all splattered on Condi.

Now they are removing another man at this moment, I couldn't make out what he was yelling, guess we will hear later.

I'm curious over the conservative complaint about this omission.  The broadcasting of the Code Pink protests, I thought, served to damage the liberal cause, not strengthen it.  Conversely, showing pro-life supporters being unlawfully disruptive at the hearings would, I'd think, play into the hands of the pro-choice side; "look how unhinged and disrespectful those pro-lifers are" and so forth.

As to the identity of "Roe", I just don't see the public interest.  It was her case that happened to result in the landmark decision.  The fact that she decided to become born-again and is now railing against abortion doesn't really matter.  It's not like the decision was just for her, it was for all women.  Het identity seems like little more than an ironic curiosity.  It's not like she has some sort of right or elevated moral perspective on the matter.

Finally, I find the picture selection of the woman with a piece of tape labeled "Life" over her mouth an odd selection for this article, and have noticed it being used in several others related to the abortion debate.  You do realize that what that image projects is squarely pro-choice, right?

THE ACTUAL HISTORY OF ROE-WADE

Roe was a pregnant street person...she claimed she "was raped"...got a lawyer...won with 5 men on SC...then said she "was not raped...just didn't want the baby"...SO THE WHOLE CASE was based upon a lie...she, of course, as a lib-heroine, was never prosecuted for this...later got religion and was active in the PRO-LIFE movement.

Now where have you heard this before?  Try, nowhere.  Ask yourself why?

Also women get 3 choices...to have sex, to have sex when fertile and to have unprotected sex...did I mention Americans lack so many adoptions thousands are running ads or getting overseas babies...

if this sound all sad and sick for a country...that is because secular socialism (modern liberalism) is always sad and sick.

Norma?! Wow

the msm is really  more than in the tank, They need to have their freedom of the press pass revoked.

Rather Curious, Indeed...

If anything, "Roe" disrupting the Sotomoyer hearings would probably give more sympathy to the pro-abortion movement rather than the anti-abortion movement (and I am a proud member of the pro-abortion movement, if you have to know), especially given the environment we are in after the murder of Dr. Tiller and the way the media has somewhat incorporated the pro-life movement with the anti-abortion movement.

Now I'll be fair and acknowledge that there's a difference between pro-life and anti-abortion groups, as pro-life tends to be more of a grassroots voice to push their agenda through electing leaders, voting for pro-life initiatives, establishing and running crisis pregnancy centers and so-on. The anti-abortion movement, on the other hand, tends to take the law into their own hands and rarely leads to domestic violence (usually the worst of it is vandalism or disrupting the peace, such as what "Roe" did at the Sotomoyer hearing, but I know that bombing and murders of abortion providers are rare.)

If you ask me, your side is lucky that the MSM downplayed "Roe"'s outurst because it's outbursts like that which makes the pro-life side look bad by being grouped in with radicals from the anti-abortion side.

→ We didn't ask

But thanks for your input.

Your differentiation between pro-life and anti-abortion simply indicates you are willing to be swayed by soothing words.

Pro-choice is still a euphemism for pro-abortion.

It's also no compliment you pay yourself in admitting the death of Dr. Tiller has galvanized your resolve to be that much more pro-abortion.

Gee Sticks, don't break your arm, trying to pat yourself on the back like that.

She stood proud for

She stood proud for something sticks, that means the world to her most likely, plus has a lot of inner guilt she wants to pay penance for...and I say good for you, you have my gratitude today.

Unlike Code Pink who really has no cause, with the exception of being another Pinko sister group...yet gets attention in the msm video clips all the time, especially during congressional hearings...and they sure took their time clearing them out now pronto when they had their outbursts now didn't they?

Give me a break here...
