Drilling is an Option
This may be the beginning of a new summer, but one thing that isn’t new is the rise in gas prices. The average price for a gallon of gas is around $2.60, but though many in the media complain, they missed a big chance to talk about solutions.
On CNBC’s June 10 “Larry Kudlow Report,” Larry Kudlow hosted Indiana Rep. Mike Pence to discuss possible measures that might help lower gas prices – including a new GOP energy plan. But ABC’s “World New with Charles Gibson” and CBS’s “Evening News” instead focused on how gas prices were hurting Americans, and left out the bit about a new Republican plan to lower energy costs. A familiar phrase from last year, “Drill, drill, drill!” was one solution that Kudlow offered several times throughout the program as a way to lower gas prices. Kudlow asked Pence, “I don’t know, why can’t we deregulate drill and, you know, all over the above as we used to say a year ago?” Pence responded, “Well we can, and that’s exactly what Republicans proposed today with a couple of new and fresh ideas.” Not only did Republicans create the American Energy Act, but Pence described how they have been working for months to, “increase our energy dependence, create jobs, rather than killing jobs like the Democrat bill, and also result in a cleaner environment.” Pence didn’t focus on just drilling. He discussed funding alternative energy, such as solar and wind, with a renewable resources funded from drilling revenue. Nuclear reactors and tax incentives for conservation were also discussed as possible solutions. But that wasn’t what ABC and CBS chose to report. The two networks ignored the new plan and the work on gas prices and dependence on foreign oil. CBS’s Dean Reynolds simply focused on the stories of those affected by the gas prices. “In Michigan there’s a painful connection between the lengthening lines of the unemployment offices and the rising price of gasoline.” Reynolds gave several reasons including summer driving, but never offered a solution. Like CBS, ABC also offered no solution and instead created a dire scenario. Anchor Charles Gibson stated that the rising gas prices, “pose a threat to the country.” Reporter Dan Harris asked, “What’s driving this? OPEC countries have cut back on their oil production in order to increase prices.” Even though OPEC countries have been cutting back, Harris never mentioned that the United States could drill to make up for some of the difference. They would have had to turn to CNBC to see the reporting they missed.

The Obamanistas don't care if gas goes to $6/gal.
June 11, 2009 - 14:08 ET by R D HelmOr even higher.
Once it does, and the public outcry kicks in, there will be a driver's "bailout" bill sailing through congress so fast you won't believe it.
Besides, cheap energy fuels economic growth, and that is the last thing these people want.

June 11, 2009 - 17:40 ET by Unsanerepeal personal income tax, to be replaced by sales/consumption tax, The idea of paying a 31% sales tax on virtually everything I buy - even without an income tax - does not appeal to me in the slightest. (To arrive at that number, I added the number most national sales tax advocates like - 23 - plus my state/municipal sales tax of roughly 8%, depending on the municipality.)
Try this:
Amend the 16th Amendment so that a 15-17% "flat tax" is assessed across the board, and setting it so that the only way Congress can raise this tax is through 3/4 majorities in both Houses of Congress.
Implement a balanced budget amendment to FORCE Congress to live within its means.
No tinkering with the tax code, no credit cards for them to use.
Oh yeah: do away with withholding. Make all of America's taxpayers write the check to the government every April so that they can feel the pain of what paying for government is. Make them confront the bill.

At the rate the price of oil is going up he is going to get his wish. We need to throw the Dems out of power in 2010 and toss Carter II out on his keister in 2012 if he is not impeached by then. Once these traitors are evicted we can start to truly become independent of foreign oil.

Like I have stated before... the plan to get us off foreign oil does not include a replacement energy source of any kind. It is merely to price it out the average consumers reach and create a government dependant majority class of people.

June 11, 2009 - 17:43 ET by UnsaneIt probably would have taken HALF the sickening porkulus bill to do soemthing much more worthwhile: fund the construction/refurbishment of nuclear power plants across America so that the United States could get 75-80% of its power from nukes, as France does.
But nah, we CAN'T do that, can we???

June 11, 2009 - 19:22 ET by bigtimerAs BD stated several years ago now...and I use quite often becuase this should have been done over 3o years ago with ANWR etc...congress keeps strangling us...thank you McC for you vote in '05...we missed it by one vote in our side of the aisle...
Oh well, it matters not who they blame it on, we all know if prices get high again, which no doubt they will (duh) people aren't going to care what the msm says, or who the President is...they will blame it on the President in power...the majority of people don't know how congress works etc...
In this case, this is exactly what Obama and team want...he has made no secret of it.
It is the agenda.
Worrisome, especially now with what is happening in the world with our enemies all over the place.
Oh well...

June 11, 2009 - 19:40 ET by mandrakeHere's my theory, Neither the President nor Congress have any control over gas prices. The price goes up because it's summer and people tend to travel more. You're out on the highway out of gas and you see a sign $3.00 gas...what are you going to do..say no? exactly
The gas companies know this and take full advantage..it's their job to the shareholders. So I think drilling in ANWR would make no diffrence at all..they would still take advantage.

Actually the govt has more
June 11, 2009 - 19:58 ET by SnappyActually the govt has more than a little say in how much a gallon of gas costs you at the pump. http://www.eia.doe.gov/bookshelf/brochures/gasolinepricesprimer/
As far as the oil companies making money for their shareholders? Yes of course...but supply and demand will even that out to a resonable amount. Drilling in ANWR will increase supply domestically and lower our price at the pump. Prices are rising currently due to OPEC's production cutback. They have said specifically that crude needs to be around $75-80 a barrel. As world consumption increases it is our responsibilty for this country to increase our own domestic resources, not regulate them into extinction and continue to import and be held hostage to the price fixing (which was the sole intent of its formation) by OPEC.
A lesson in economics
June 11, 2009 - 20:38 ET by UnsaneMandrake, I know that as a Canadian you look at both economics and capitalism with extreme contempt, but here's MY theory: You don't know jack about this subject.
When gas prices were hitting $4.00 a gallon here in TX, I and others responded by driving a LOT less. The average number of miles driven by Americans were plummeting last year, the first time that had happened in 30 years. In my case, I only drove to and from work, and did all of my grocery shopping and other necessary errands en route. I cut off trips to Minute Maid Park for baseball, as much as it pained me. Whenever I went anywhere on the town for fun, I rode buses. When I needed to go to San Antonio on business - something I do once a month, without fail -I flew rather that drove because I found it cheaper to do so.
Now, for your stupid comment on ANWR. When you attended school, were you taught what supply and demand curves were, or what that intersection in the two curves is called? Guess what? If ANWR is drilled, and we get more oil from it, AND we decide to pursue oil shale projects in the American West and extract oil that way, guess what happens to the price of oil? Yep, because there is more supply, the price goes DOWN.
Much of the rise in gasoline prices has very little to do with increased demand and everything to do with the declining value of the dollar thanks to His Majesty The Shahinshah thinking he can spend and borrow what he damn well pleases. Have you noticed the loonie can buy more south of the border as of late? As oil is denominated in dollars, this presents a problem.
That last fact presents an interesting phenomenon. If ANWR and the American West were exploited for oil production, and we wound up sending less money to Mexico and Alberta, that means less in dollar outflows, thus dollars getting increasingly scarce on world markets. Thus making the value of the dollar rise. Which has the effect of shrinking the cost of a barrel of oil.
No need to thank me. Just ask yourself what has happened to economics education in your country, if one exists.
Oh, and by the way, res quantum valorem tantum vendi potest.

The answer to all of our problems
June 11, 2009 - 21:47 ET by amilkWe are faced with two situations - 1. our government has this overwhelming urge to print lots of money and 2. we're sitting on a tremendous amount of US oil and natural gas. How to fit these two items together for one solution? China has expressed concern over our financial outlook by showing less and less interest in purchasing our bonds. The US government controls leasing on US oil and natural gas sites, which become more valuable with the price of oil going up again because of middle eastern turmoil. Does it not seem plausible that one of our leaders suggests trading leasing for bonds? Hmmmm!
Trendy Sinophobia
June 18, 2009 - 10:10 ET by UnsaneIt is funny to me how the debt was never a big deal until the day the Chinese bought a Treasury (bill, note, bond). Then, and ONLY then, did people care, and did the SHRIEKING begin.
