On ABC, Billionaire Pete Peterson Calls for Health Care Sacrifice
Pete Peterson is a billionaire, a former commerce secretary, and successful entrepreneur, so one would think an interview with him would be a chance to push for specific observations and prescriptions for the U.S. economy. But if one were watching ABC’s “Good Morning America” on June 9, one would be wrong. Petersen was promoting his new book, “The Education of an American Dreamer,” in an interview with Diane Sawyer. But during the segment, Sawyer tossed him softball questions and allowed him to offer only vague, liberal policy prescriptions.
Sawyer, who raved about Peterson’s “national commitment to the old American values,” asked him, “But everyone keeps saying that we had to plunge all this bailout money into the economy in order to stave out an absolute cataclysm?” Peterson stated, “So I’m not criticizing the stimulus program, but I will criticize something else. This administration is very accurate and very expert and very persistent in telling us that healthcare costs are the problem. But because we’ve become a country where shared sacrifice is not just politically incorrect, it’s politically terminal, we aren’t being asked to cut healthcare costs in any tangible way. I would have much preferred that the president say, ‘Yes, we need universal healthcare. But we also need to cut healthcare costs and here’s the sacrifice we’re gonna have to make.’ But we’re not a country that’s gotten very used to making sacrifice. Do you understand that we now spend over twice as much per capita as the rest of the world and there’s no difference in health outcomes?” Petersen didn’t cite his source for that fact. Nor did he explain what “shared sacrifice” meant in terms of healthcare. Presumably, it wasn’t allowing everyone getting a little bit sick, or some people forgoing treatment altogether. But Sawyer’s only follow-up was: “Once we know that, what do we do?” Peterson, who Cuomo touted as a being, “considered a genius by many in the worlds of finance and government,” only replied with, “First know the problem, settle on a few reforms.” That was good enough for Cuomo, who pronounced after the segment, “Pete Peterson’s wisdom may be timeless, but he’s right on the news with healthcare reforms.” Sawyer moved on to entitlement reform. “You have said that the rich should renounce social security.” Peterson replied, “We have a progressive income tax. Why don’t we have a progressive benefit reduction? Social security can be fixed, Diane, with a series of, I think, of reasonable changes.” Again, rather than pressing Petersen on the issue, Sawyer retreated to asking about his immigrant father: “What’s your favorite phrase or sentence in the language of your father?” But it’s hardly surprising from the same show that also recommended giving up lattes and donating to the government in order to fix the deficit during a segment last year with the Peter G. Peterson Foundation CEO David Walker.

ABC's Faux Teenager
June 9, 2009 - 13:23 ET by allanfI don't know about you, but I am getting tired of ABC's faux teenager breathlessly cheerleading for liberal cause after liberal cause.
Diane, you were America's Junior Miss 46 years ago. Time to assume the mufti of an adult, not a high school cheerleader.

I cannot stand to watch her, for the reasons you describe.

Rock Concert Groupies
June 9, 2009 - 15:35 ET by allanfDiane is annoying. But the rest of the media are acting like a bunch of groupies trying to get back stage at a rock concert. Richard Roth and Chip Reid are comical. Brian William's crush on Obama is down right scary.
I won't even cover some of our highly educated female journalists.
Shared sacrifice should start with frivolous lawsuits
June 9, 2009 - 17:33 ET by nkviking75Possibly the biggest need for shared sacrifice in health care would be sacrifice by trial lawyers and their greedy clients who seek outrageously huge damages in malpractice suits. In a world where people born with a disability succeed in suing a doctor for failing to abort him, some lawyers are definitely out of control. And I'm sure you've noticed advertising seeking clients for lawsuits against big drug companies, makers of asbestos products, etc.
There are obviously legitimate reasons to file malpractice suits, but more needs to be done to insure that verdicts make sense in the real world and that awards are reasonable. One part of the solution would be to make plaintiffs in frivolous lawsuits pay dearly for abusing the system.

June 9, 2009 - 13:40 ET by Scuba DudePete Peterson was also the former CEO of Lehman Brothers back in the late 70's to the early 80's, up until the time it was sold to American Express, I remember because I used to work there. If I remember correctly his wife was one of the people instrumental in getting Sesame Street off the ground, (and we know how Sesame Street feels about Barky don't we?).
Edit: His wife is the creator of Sesame Street per his biography.
In Ken Auletta's book "Greed and Glory on Wall Street: The Fall of the House of Lehman", Peterson was described as someone who would toss orders or the like over his shoulder expecting them to be picked up.
With a wife who appears to be a liberal and the elitist attitude Peterson exudes, it is no wonder the SCM eats all this up.

Interesting tid-bits indeed that apply here.

June 9, 2009 - 14:05 ET by Scuba DudeNo probs, but I have to say after thinking about the good old days of the 80's bull market, we were all a bit elitist back then. The salesman back then at Lehman used to say if you don't have $10,000 to invest with us we will give you the number to Shearson or Merrill.

I doubt if Sawyer or Peterson really remember what those are? Are they the values held by our founders? Self reliance and little government, a belief in Jesus as God and the freedom to suceed or fail based on ones abilities?
I dont think thats what she had in mind.
Healthcare Is NOT Broken
June 9, 2009 - 16:39 ET by stratmanIt is easy to deride people like Petersen, who made his billion off the backs of hard working Americans who can only dream of a fraction of what he has due to the facist policies of his chums in office today, and Sawyer, who has always lived in the lap of luxury and echo chambers.
These two will not share or even "feel" the effects of sharing in their lives due to their financial and political positions. They are shielded from the fallout of their views.
Petersen is a damned coward for avoiding the Stinkulus Bill's projected effects on the financial security of this country. As a Gordon Gecko of his time, Petersen should know where Obama is leading America to for years to come. Sawyer is, as usual, a buffoon as an interviewer, so no surprise there. Unless Sawyer was referring to "old American values" as early 20th Century "Progressives", or Socialists, or 1960's Hippie communalism (just an updated version of old fashioned Communism), then I, and she, have no idea what she means.
Petersen proves the fact that even smart people can be really, really stupid. Then again, he might be angling to make more money and/or governmental access. Greed is good, huh Pete?
America has BETTER outcomes overall than anywhere else on the planet. Examples of why our medical system is better than elsewhere can be read here and here.
I really dislike these manipulators and their enablers. Without the decade's long steady propaganda drumbeat of doom and gloom by the Liberal press and power-hungry Liberal politicians, the American public would have a much higher opinion of healthcare.
Like a battered spouse believing they are the problem, the American public has been bludgeoned into submission over healthcare and the inverse opinion of what government should do according to "old American values."
Someone remind me when massive taxation schemes in an already debtor's hell economy combined with ever increasing handouts were "old American values."
