Politico: Obama ‘Out of Step’ with Pro-Gay Rights Sentiment

  • Bookmark and Share

President Obama is apparently out of touch with Americans on gay right issues according to the June 4 article by Politico’s Ben Smith and Jonathan Martin. In the article “Gay Groups Grow Impatient With Obama,” Smith and Martin criticized Obama for the not taking an active role in supporting gay rights, such as same-sex marriage, but paint an inaccurate portrayal of the American peoples’ stance toward same-sex marriage.

The article was critical of Obama for not helping advance gay and lesbian rights “President Barack Obama’s promises of change are falling short for one core Democratic constituency: gays and lesbians.”  But Obama never promised to change traditional marriage during the 2008 presidential campaign.

According to Smith and Martin, “Gay rights issues have been moving at breakneck speed, none faster than same-sex marriage. Most public opinion polls now show more than 40 percent of Americans support same-sex marriage, seen as a fringe issue just a few years earlier.” Yet, a recent Gallup poll found that attitudes toward same-sex marriage have changed little over the last year. Fifty-seven percent oppose same-sex marriage.

Smith and Martin instead wrote, “Already, five New England states and Iowa have save same-sex marriage laws on the books.” While only six states have legalized same-sex marriage, there was no mention of the forty-four states that don’t have same-sex marriage. According to Concerned Women for America, what the article also failed to mention was thirty states have an amendment defining marriage as a union between a man and women.

Proposition 8 did receive some attention. “Proposition 8 has since energized the state’s gay rights movement.”  Smith and Marti did not, however, include how Proposition 8 was upheld in California by a Supreme Court ruling on May 26 after it passed by fifty-two percent of the voters in November of 2008.

Smith and Martin also made it appear that more people support same-sex marriage because of the unbalanced sources used. Joe Solmonese, president of Human Rights Campaign, Aubrey Sarvis, the executive director of the Service members Legal Defense Networks, veteran gay rights activist David Mixner and gay blogger John Aravosis were cited. Representative Jared Polis, a gay Democrat from Colorado, was also quoted.

Even the political figures mentioned leaned towards the left: Celinda Lake, is a Democratic pollester and Sen. Chuck Schumer is Democrat from New York. Howard Dean, who has come out in support of same-sex marriage, was even quoted. The only mention of a Republican was of former Vice-president Dick Cheney, but he had just announced his support for same-sex marriage.

While Smith and Martin attempted to prove that Obama is out of touch with Americans’ and their attitude towards same-sex marriage, they sorely missed their mark, even after using unbalanced reporting.

Out of touch

If 57% oppose it ... who's really out of touch? Or, more precisely, who's out of touch with whom?

Another classic case of the media trying to start a bandwagon by telling everyone that the bandwagon is filling up fast. They're going to have to come up with a new trick. This one's getting too obvious.

Iowa really doesn't have a gay marriage "law"

“Already, five New England states and Iowa have same-sex marriage laws on the books.”

I'm not sure it's accurate to say that Iowa has a same-sex marriage law on its books.  What we have is an order of our state's Supreme Court declaring our DOMA law unconstitutional.  Our legislature did not act between the ruling in early April and adjournment in May.  Whatever it is that passes for our law certainly wasn't the will of the people.

Every ten years the Iowa Constitution requires a measure on the ballot asking if the people want to call a constitutional convention, and next year is the next time it comes up.  Normally it would be ignored, but look for it to become a major issue in Iowa's mid-term election.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

Jonathan Martin started out

Jonathan Martin started out at National Review. Did Politico change him or was he a liberal in conservatives clothing at NR?

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.

He'll flip on this too

Just a sidenote to this, but I'm looking for Obama to reverse himself on this issue before long.

After he looks into it with Axelrod ofcourse.  My guess is that they don't want to isolate their gay constituents much longer, and they'll have Rahm and the boys make sure the media plays it in his favor.

Hey Politico, slow down a bit!

Geeze! Let the man heal the middle east first, will ya? These Politico folks are just plain pushy!

(Just imagine the nightly routine of the President as he first checks his to-do list, then heads off to bed...)

  • Continued Economic Downturn- Whatever! Continue using this as cover for the planned mass nationalization of everything I can get my hands on.
  • Middle East goin' bonkers again? Gotta get on that one! Ask Rahm if it's okay for me to be Muslim for this trip.
  • Earth heatin' up? Alright, gimme a moment. Cap-n-trade...cap-n-trade... need a new name for this one... Crap parade... no, that won't work... ask Michelle...
  • Health Care? No sweat...
  • North Korea? Ah, they don't really mean any harm.
  • Drug Cartels? Huh, somebody say drugs? Who's holdin'? Hehe, I like that one... I'm funny.
  • What now? The gays? Dammit! Can't they wait? I'm tryin' to save the world here! note to self: begin email campaign asking for increased donations from gays.
  • 200th day? Rest. Thank me for me...

Nitey-nite girls. Nite hun. Damn dog. Biden- what the hell was I thinkin'?

Nice
