CNNMoney Supports Absurd Alternative Energy Funding Demands

CNNMoney mustn’t pay very well, because writer Steve Hargreaves is moonlighting as a PR flack for the International Energy Agency. At least, that’s the impression given by his June 12 article on the IEA’s 700-page "sharply-worded" report that called for an additional $36 trillion of clean energy investment by 2050.

According to Hargreaves, IEA Executive Director Maria van der Hoeven doesn’t think governments are doing enough to keep global warming in check. “Our ongoing failure to realize the full potential of clean energy technology is alarming,” she said. “Under current policies, both energy demand and emissions are likely to double by 2050.”

Hargreaves parroted the report’s claims, explaining that renewable energy sources like wind, solar, geothermal are free. He noted that the savings would far outweigh the cost at some point, and work out to $130 per person each year.

The report also asserted that our current habits could have catastrophic consequences. “Continued heavy reliance on a narrow set of technologies and fossil fuels is a significant threat to energy security, stable economic growth and global welfare, as well as to the environment.” it said.

There were no critiques of these claims, however, or even an acknowledgement that the science behind them is disputed. Hargreaves did allow that there were “naysayers who think renewable technology cannot be scaled up to produce the magnitude of energy the world demands.”

Those “naysayers” increasingly have experience on their side, The Obama Administration invested billions in at least a dozen green energy companies that declared bankruptcy or continued to suffer serious financial issues. Mainstream media outlets neglected to mention them all; Solyndra was more than enough of a scandal.

Currently using a narrow set of technologies?

Submitted by JeffC... on Tue, 06/12/2012 - 3:43pm.

Currently, the bulk of the world's energy comes from oil, coal, natural gas, nuclear, hydroelectric, and a fraction from solar and wind.

Whereas, the enviro-wackos want to limit energy to solar and wind, but no solar or wind farms anywhere near anything they like.

Remind me again who is using energy from a narrow set of technologies?

36 trillion???

Submitted by Paul Wilson on Tue, 06/12/2012 - 4:52pm.

36 trillion is an INSANE number - US GDP is only around 15 trillion. So over the next 38 years, the US would have to devote more than 5% of its total wealth to green energy development, according to the IEA.

I just had a BRILLIANT idea!

Give me the 36 trillion in 20s. I'll burn the cash and generate more energy than all the "green" boondoggles combined. And you can trust me, I'll account for every penny (that's why I asked for 20s - NO PENNYS!!!). Of course, there will probably be numerous unforseen "administrative" costs (wink, wink)...

What's 'alarming' is the fact

Submitted by Slyrr on Tue, 06/12/2012 - 7:25pm.

What's 'alarming' is the fact that brain dead ideologues like Stevie-poo here keep demanding tens of TRILLIONS be spent on 'green energy', when Obama alone has proven demonstrably that the so-called 'green energy' industry is a mega-failure.

Obama literally stole trillions of dollars from our pockets to sink into duds like Solyndra, et. al. If 'green energy' was the cash cow that idiots like little Stevie say it is, Solyndra would have taken off like a rocket. But it failed - failed - FAILED. And every penny that Obama stole from us was money wasted.

That alone should disqualify any 'green' business from getting one red CENT from any government grant, bill or legislation of any kind. But what does Stevie-poo care about that? CNN and all of their satellite businesses are also failed corporations, just like Solyndra. If Obama were'nt stealing more of our money and using money laundering schemes to kick it into the coffers of CNN, MSNBC and all the other failed liberal media corporations, they'd have collapsed and died out years ago.

By all rights, Stevie-poo should on the unemployment line, along with the 3 million other US citizens that Obama has ruined with his disastrous policies. Obama is robbing US taxpayers to keep CNN afloat. What does Stevie care if the government steals a few dozen more trillions of dollars?

If a Liberal/Democrat politician/media figure wants to put their arms around you, or pat you on the back, all they're doing is looking for a good place to stick a knife.

"Not doing enough."

Submitted by CobraMan on Tue, 06/12/2012 - 7:37pm.

So, we're "not doing enough" to "combat " global warming? I agree wholeheartedly! Of course, I say that for a different reason then they do. I say it because it is IMPOSSIBLE! No matter what we do, it'll never be enough.

Do these people understand what it would take to change the chemical composition of over 23 trillion tons (that's "trillion" with a "t") of atmosphere with a volume of nearly 290,000 cubic miles (and that's just in the Troposphere where most "climate" occurs) in such a way that we could actually control its mean temperature? It would take far more than humanity could ever hope to accomplish in 10,000 years no matter how much money we spend in the attempt! It's just not possible.
