New York Times Profile Still Trying to Link Loughner to Right-Wing Extremism
The New York Times simply can’t help themselves. They simply cannot leave their opinions out of supposedly objective pieces of journalism. Which begs the question, if the bulk of the articles contain this type of reporting, why does the Times even bother having a separate opinion section?
In a profile piece on Tucson gunman Jared Loughner titled, Looking Behind the Mug-Shot Grin of an Accused Killer, the Times takes two separate occasions to toss in a casual link to ‘right-wing groups’ (h/t Byron York).
The first cheap shot shows up on the first page of a seven page profile:
He became an echo chamber for stray ideas, amplifying, for example, certain grandiose tenets of a number of extremist right-wing groups — including the need for a new money system and the government’s mind-manipulation of the masses through language.
The second instance addresses the currency issue and casts blame on the right as well :
A few days later, during a meeting with a school administrator, Mr. Loughner said that he had paid for his courses illegally because, “I did not pay with gold and silver” — a standard position among right-wing extremist groups.
Perhaps inadvertently, the profile points out that much of what they know about Loughner is open to interpretation.
Instead, the pattern of facts so far presents only a lack of one, a curlicue of contradictory moments open to broad interpretation.
Fortunately, it seems the Times is willing to provide those interpretations for their readers.
As Mark Finkelstein wrote earlier today, “By now, even (the) most ardent liberals have had to admit that there was no nexus between conservatives and the manifestly psychotic AZ shooter.”
Apparently this makes the New York Times a step above ‘ardent liberal’.
Its one thing for an op-ed column to provide these links between Loughner and right-wing extremism, but for it to be featured in a profile is yet another demonstration of the journalistic malpractice that permeates the New York Times.
Interestingly, a same-day piece concerning Eric Fuller, the victim of the shooting who was recently arrested for making death threats to a Tea Party spokesman, receives no such treatment. There is no mention of Fuller being an echo chamber for extreme left-wing groups. There is no mention that Fuller’s attempts to link the shooting rampage to Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, and Fox News, are ‘a standard position among left-wing extremist groups’.

If you call yourself a real American and read this hateful rag for personal enjoyment, you need to take a long hard look at yourself in the mirror, as doing so makes YOU just as culpable in the spread of hatred as them.
........and you cannot justify your hatred of America by rationalizing, I only read the ads and comics either.........and Bill Clinton didn't inhale or have sex with that woman....Monica Lewinski.

Not that it means right or left but so far I have yet to hear an exact reference to gold and silver. He always talks about "currency" and new money system. From day one, this seemed to be interpreted by hacks to mean "gold and silver". Maybe some assume that is what he means. But his videos do not refer to a tangible currency but rather "thought" and mind control. It was as if he was living in the Matrix and seemingly tangible objects were just in the mind and he thought he could manipulate them. That seemed to be the idea he was advancing. Not something rational that most of us would try to link to. But the NYT isn't in business to learn or educate.

I believe this guys currency was his thoughts, which he created his own code & languge ( or way of putting them into writing anyway ) to keep them safe & secure from the government.
On the first day, before all the youtube sights related to him crashed, one was of him standing at a chalkboard ( watch out Glenn ) with about ten rows down of what appeared to be numbers, signs, etc., which are probably his own made up language ( currency ) which the government didn't know, therefor they could not take it away.
Also, on that first day, someone spoke, or I read where he made fun of the minorities ( people ) in his town, who didn't even know, comprehend the English language.
I assumed he was anti immigrant until I heard or read that his hatred ( fixation ) for Congressman Giffords actually stemmed from a 2007 meet & greet where he ask an incoherent question, which she jokingly responded to in Spanish.
That seemingly insignificant 2 minute exchange 3 years ago ( in my opinion ) is what he referenced regarding not understanding English, as well as the catalyst for the death and destruction that took the lives of 6 innocent people last Saturday.
I hope the FBI's forensic profiler professionals, not the bigotted, mental sherrif head up this investgation. Hopefully they will gleen enough information to train the appropriate individuals, maybe even the general public what to look for, so others may be spared the agony the citizens of Tucson will be agonizing over everytime one of their family members leaves the house.

Dennis Kucinich, a hard left liberal Democrat, was the mind control legislator. Last time I checked, he isn't a right winger. Ron Paul has been all about the money angle for a very long time, and while he does caucus with Republicans, he is hardly a posterboy for the "extreme right". If anything he would have to be called an extreme Libertarian.
Interestingly, left out is the shooter's opposition to the "In God We Trust" part of the money. Gee, I wonder why that is?
In watching some Sunday shows this morning, FNS and Chrissy's show, I noticed a clear running away from this and a strange hush about the whole thing. FNS bashed Sarah Palin - from Britt to Juan, they all did so. Chrissy obviously did the same along with a wishful hint of gun control - and that was it.
Not a word about the arrest for a threat made did I hear, though I did miss the first part of FNS.

I have never ever even one time ever heard anyone talk about paying for things with silver and gold. I know Glenn Beck hawks buying gold on his show but to my knowledge he has never actually talked about using it as a currency. So how the hell does this qualify as a "standard position" ? NYT uses Loughner to divert opposition to Stuxnet blabbing
Submitted by CO2Maker on Sun, 01/16/2011 - 1:14pm.
The NYT puts out a big story about how the US and Israel tested the Stuxnet computer worm. But who is there to pay attention to that boneheaded bit of investigative media openness, now that they've dragged the red herring of Loughner's putative right-wing affiliations across the trail?
When the Stuxnet attack on the Iranian nuclear facility was first announced several months ago, I'm sure, as was everybody else here in the US all the way to Teheran, that Israel might have something to do with it. And so might the US. Suspicion that the attack came from China or Russia or one of the "stans" was floated about, but it didn' t gain much traction. Why? Because the party with the most to gain from Stuxnet was Iran's obvious target, Israel. And who is Israel's staunchest ally (Liberals notwithstanding)? That would be US.
So why blab it, NYT? Looking for another Putzer Prize? Every since Daniel Ellsberg's papers were hot news, the metrotextual reporters at the NYT have been nurturing their semi-hard-ons waiting for another chance to shoot their journalistic wad, which they do with a certain regularity when the news doesn't involve one of their own captured reporters.

CO2maker.
Interesting how that piece blamed America and Israel. Yet, it looked to me like the real basis for that blame was the fact that the "attack" was so carefully pinpointed so as to only affect the specific target and nothing else. Without realizing it, that author complimented the military efforts of the USA and Israel - because those we fight just blow up anything and everything.
I noticed a hint of "blame Bush" and a strange twist that somehow turned into praise for Obama. This regarding strategy implementation. Absent of course was praise for Bush busting out AQ Kahn, Pakistan, DPRK and Libya. Absent was how Iraq played into that very public outing......I will say that the statement about AQ Kahn stealing from the Dutch was puzzling. So many Paks will take great offense to that bit.
I think there was more assumption in that piece than there was actual supported news. Regardless, I would agree that it was harmful to this country and helpful to the Iranians, especiallly inflamation purposes. The NYT will stop at nothing to harm this country and every effort made, even when not conventional military action, to safeguard against an Iranian bomb.

That is exactly the kind of thing that guided the upcoming reporters of the AP, mainstream broadcasters, and such to their liberal viewpoint today.

These people are off-the-hook fanatics who are further deteriorating daily. As has been noted by all honest pundits, the left has lost control of the news narrative, and thereby control of the political agenda. They are hysterical. They are resorting to anarchy - saying and doing anything possible to get their way. And they are unwittingly making things worse for themselves; the more they push crap against their opponents, and ignore missteps by those with whom they sympathize. The joy ride is over.

Name one right-wing group that claims the dollar is ILLEGAL. The claim of certain libertarians is the dollar, A LEGAL TENDER, should be BACKED BY GOLD. Not that gold and silver should be legal tender.
It is a lie that we would not let any troll to get away with here. There is not one rational group of people in the United States claiming the dollar is illegal and only gold/silver should be legal tender.

that they saw signs of this from the McCain-Palin rallies? Was Gold-based currency a real big issue in 2008? NYT needs to remember that their "points" have to form a consistent case, not establish that you scrabble for anything that can remotely add to your bouts of paranoia and panic.
I was not there nor do I read Krugman.

You will have to provide the quote Sir.
Was Gold-based currency a real big issue in 2008? --- The Paultards were pushing for returning to the Gold Standard as a gold based currency is called. From memory.
The NYT is claiming here even a Gold Standard would be illegal according to right-wing groups. Only gold and/or Silver would be legal tender.
The gold standard was a commitment by participating countries to fix the prices of their domestic currencies in terms of a specified amount of gold.
Sorry I could have phrased that clearer
Submitted by Quasi-socialist on Sun, 01/16/2011 - 9:49pm.
That wasn't a question to you. That was a rhetorical question backing up your post. Here's the thing: let's say that Loughner's obsession with gold-backed currency can be linked to the right. That makes a point, but not in a way that Krugman can say he saw in the McCain-Palin rallies. It's laughable to think of McCain-Palin rallies where gold-standard was a big issue.
So they link it to Paul's followers, what does that have to do with Rush, Beck, Palin and others? So, the point is that if they use this connection, it doesn't help them back up anything else that they have said.
They're just hoping nobody notices the bait-and-switch.
Oops. I missed that.

If there is such as an echo chamber it is almost exclusevly on the Left. The NYT and the other Left Wing rags plus ABC/CBS/NBC/NPR/CNN/MSNBC are all sources of Left Wing groupthink that only resonates within their own cluster of organizations. A lot of the time their target audience is each other not the country at large.

Charles Krauthammer is a recognized authority in psychiatry. Much of the foundational literature in bipolar disorder and mixed mood/dissociative disorders is due to his work, and I cannot think of a better person to comment on the media's hysteria than Dr. K. Having met the man in a personal and professional capacity, I don't always agree with his political opinions, but as a psychiatrist he is unparalleled in his understanding of the political dimensions of our medical specialty.
The more I read from the main stream media leftist pundits who are singularly obsessed with pinning blame on right wing pundits and politicians, the more I wonder just how bad the leftist delusions will become. I am quite honestly amazed by the blatant stupidity and hypocrisy as the left wing pundits achieve a collective neurogenic bladder and colonic incontinence trying desperately to pin some kind of blame on conservatives for Jared Loughner's alleged actions. I must emphasize at this point that there is NO diagnosis of schizophrenia in the alleged shooter, but in viewing this case dispassionately, the profile and the forensic summary is one that all of us in psychiatry have seen before--albeit with horror.
