Liberal Blogger Details Bradley Manning’s Inhumane Treatment – His Blankets Hurt

By Rusty Weiss | December 27, 2010 | 01:51

A  A

A man is arrested and detained for months without any charges being brought against him.  He is being held in deplorable conditions, forced to endure extreme physical and mental distress.  He is exposed to the same ‘torture’ tactics that other enemies of the United States have allegedly suffered through.

So why isn’t the Commander-in-Chief taking heat for this travesty of justice?

Because this isn’t the Bush administration.

Firedoglake blogger, David House, has been detailing a recent visit with Bradley Manning, accused of leaking classified documents to Wikileaks, at a military prison at the Quantico Marine base in Virginia (h/t Weasel Zippers).  Of course, House bemoaned the ‘inhumane’ treatment of Manning, describing the toll that months of solitary confinement have taken on his physical and mental well-being.

AFP ran with the story and made it clear that they had no intention of offering a balanced report.  In fact, viewing the headline, one would never know that the story came from an extremely liberal website, reading more as fact than a slanted accusation.

'Inhumane' treatment for US soldier in WikiLeaks case

This must be more of the ‘inhumane’ treatment that Salon’s Glenn Greenwald reported on when he spoke of ‘a major story' regarding Manning’s ‘cruel’ treatment.  Except that, as NewsBuster Ken Shepherd pointed out, the Salon piece bemoans the lack of a soft pillow, whereas, the Firedoglake post is concerned with the torturous nature of a really uncomfortable blanket.  House states (emphasis mine):

Manning related to me on December 19 2010 that his blankets are similar in weight and heft to lead aprons used in X-ray laboratories, and similar in texture to coarse and stiff carpet. He stated explicitly that the blankets are not soft in the least and expressed concern that he had to lie very still at night to avoid receiving carpet burns.

No soft pillows or blankets for a man accused of violating federal criminal and military law, and putting the lives of our brave men and women in harm’s way?  The horror.  Yet, this is quite similar to the Susan Crawford flap from a couple of years ago, in which Gitmo detainees were alleged to have endured certain minor inconveniences by most standards.

To the credit of the left wing blogs such as Firedoglake, AlterNet, and the Huffington Post, and organizations like a Code Pink, or the highly biased AFP, they are simply remaining true to their bleeding-heart roots - less coersion, more coddling for those accused of serious crimes against the United States.  But if these tactics are considered torture when they involve terrorists, then it is clearly overkill when it comes to an American citizen such as Manning.

But where is the main stream media on this?  Where is their outrage?

For years, they were more than willing to cover the perceived torture of individuals during the Bush administration.  For instance, this ABC News report about the possibility of the Obama administration prosecuting Bush era officials for interrogation techniques ironically states:

President Obama suggested today that it remained a possibility that the Justice Department might bring charges against officials of the Bush administration who devised harsh interrogation policies that some see as torture.

Here in the Manning case, some clearly see sleep deprivation and a lack of a pillow pet and a special blankie as torture.  So when can we expect the Justice Department to investigate the Obama administration?

More important than the Liberal wet blankets...

Submitted by sanderson13 on Mon, 12/27/2010 - 2:16am.

Why hasn't this man been charged with anything?

None of us benefits from an American citizen held in jail without being charged with a crime.

The man is in the USA

Submitted by Dan The Man 2 on Mon, 12/27/2010 - 3:10am.

The man is in the USA military and they don't have to disclose any details.  They can and do throw people into the brig when they are suspect and they have sufficient evidence of wrong doing.  I imagine all the p's and q's and proper procedure have been followed.

Remember the military will deal with this man, not any civilian court; at least the first one will be military.

This Little B*****d....

Submitted by GeneralAl on Mon, 12/27/2010 - 7:14am.

This little corrupt and sissy b*****d violated his oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States against ALL enemies, foreign and domestic! He's darn lucky that we have a sissy President with girly men in his cabinet! According to the UCMJ, he has aided and abetted the enemy and could be shot by order of the unit commander. As far as this sissy's blanket, perhaps he would like a nice "blanket party" given to him by the guys whose lives he has endangered. Give the little f****t a berlap bag infested with lice and fleas if he's so uncomfortable! I'm glad my military days ended years ago. These kind of traitors should be target practice for the firing squad!

Tiose doing the whining have never served. As I have told my daughter over and over the UCMJ is a different animal from civilian law. He probably has it better than many of those in the hills Afganistan. I bet they'd love to have a rough blanket and a bed to lie down on instead of a pancho and some rock.

I have no sympathy for this little bastard. If I was there I'd lead the blanket party.

... but things are going to get so much better now that DADT has been replaced by "Never leave your bubby's behind!"  Can we call it NLYBB?

It's all the military's fault for not realizing that some soldiers just aren't used to those rough old blankies that they issue., and can you believe that they don't actually issue pillow pets for you to snuggle with in the fur lined and heated foxy woxy holes? (AhhHH! Such a disgusting name!  I'd prefer that they call them "a$$ holes."  It would seem sooooo much more welcoming, don't you think?)

I any case, if you "bitches" think that Bradley Manning is high maintenance, you just wait till Barney Fwank gets the wanks filled wiff his fwiends, you wuff old vets!

Every soldier, sailor, airman and Marine who joins ascribes to the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Crimes or offenses are detailed in "Articles," of which I can think of a half-dozen he could be charged with, any one of which could keep his traitorous ass in Leavenworth the rest of his life.

Believe me, this little sword swallower is no stranger to rug burns.

This half a sissy really just wants all the comforts of home like his little pet gerbil stinky to sit on through all those lonely days & nights in solitary confinement.

Oh yeah, he also would like a Sharpie so he can draw his boyfriend's likeness on his limp little wrist.

The basic training he went through is nothing like what I went through in '69. I  thought we had it rough until I talked with my buddy that was at Parris Island. I had to admit mine was a walk in the park compared to that.

....these are the same wretched libtards who wanted to hang Bush & Cheney & Rove for their so-called involvement in outing the name of Valarie Plame, the bigtime CIA desk jockey who had about as much secret intel activity at the time of the allegation as Mickey Mouse.

As if the NAME of someone being released (which WikiLeaks could have done easily) is a real national security threat like this little d-bag did. The sick, wretched, petulent left in this nation is the real threat to national security, from signing that feel-good START treaty with Russia on down the line.

And this little wormy POS traitor should have already been lined up and shot.

Traitor

Submitted by texusmc on Mon, 12/27/2010 - 11:21am.

Ok this little traitor is whining about a standard issue wool blanket and feather pillow that EVERY U.S. MILITARY member used through boot camp and at most bases world wide!!!  Are you S*&^ING ME!!?? He is very lucky that he IS in solitary. If he was in general he would have already been sent to the morgue. Even in Military prisons/brigs, there is a cast system. Traitors are even lower than molesters and rapists. Violating his civil rights.....whatever. The left is playing this up. Glad the MSM isnt running with this cuz even once in a while they have a clue.

save the taxpayers some money, .223 for 72 cents should do the trick.

These horribly rough blankets are standard issue military blankets.

The left went completely ballistic castigating everybody in the Bush administration (except the actual leaker oddly enough) over the outing of Valerie Plame's name and place of employment but when Pfc. Bradley Manning outs thousands of people leftists fixate on the weave of his prison blanket?

It's time for leftists to go away -- far far away. You are totally busted.

I ran into a gentleman at the store this morning who I came to find out was a member of the Chosin Frozen. I bet he'd love to have carpet burns from a blanket back then.

For all that don't know Chosin Frozen are those men from the 1st Marine Divsion that fought at the Chosin Reservoir in Korea.

Too bad, perhaps he should be out at the COP named RESTREPO,  or the one called BADEL, among many others.   I'm sure the troops  would be more than happy to have him there, he'd be a good bullet magnet.  He could be the "Sacrificial Goat", staked out about 100 yards from the COP.

Submitted by ricklail on Mon, 12/27/2010 - 4:16pm.

At the prison where I work if an inmate is palced on sucide watch he is given a smock to put on. No underwear, no blanket, no sheets. The officers have to sign a paper that is attached to his cell door that they check on him every 15 minutes, 24/7. I don't see why they don't let them go ahead and kill themselves. If they are that determined to do it it sure would save the taxpayers some money.
