Howard Dean: Bring Back the Fairness Doctrine Because Fox ‘Makes Stuff Up’ and ‘Americans Don’t Know What’s Going On’

By Rusty Weiss | November 30, 2010 | 05:07

A  A

An audio clip from about two months ago has been uncovered by The Blaze which clearly demonstrates that, even with all of his opining and public speaking skills, there is a reason that Howard Dean’s most notable quote will always remain a timelessly incoherent scream.  Despite being a one-word definition of ignorance, Dean doesn’t mind discussing how to control the media in an effort to educate what he considers to be the ignorant masses – Americans.

What would he do about the media?

“I would bring back the Fairness Doctrine so you couldn’t have a spectacle of a Fox Flooze, which just makes stuff up and is a propaganda outlet.  You would actually have to have some sanctioned human beings talking to the other side.  And MSNBC would have to do the same.  They would have to have some conservatives on there too.  I think that’s much better for the country.”

Why does he want the government to control media?

“Americans don’t know what’s going on and therefore the media can have their way with them intellectually.”

If Dean is so concerned about propaganda outlets making stuff up, then perhaps he should be fact-checking his own statements.  Such as…

  1. Lying about his ties to George Soros and MoveOn.org.
  2. Lying about Fox News’ coverage of the Shirley Sherrod story.
  3. Lying about his level of support for an Obama re-election bid.
  4. Lying about campaign ads.
  5. Lying about former President Bush’s immigration plan.
  6. Lying about voter suppression by the Republicans.

If anybody knows about lying, it would appear to be Dean himself.  So if he has been so successful at distorting facts, does this mean that he believes that he’s been having his way with Americans intellectually?

Dean has long championed the Fairness Doctrine as an avenue for controlling conservative talk radio and Fox News.  In a Newsweek column in 2007, George Will explained the infatuation that liberals have with regulating speech over the airwaves, specifically citing Dean:

Some of today's illiberals say that media abundance, not scarcity, justifies the Fairness Doctrine: Americans, the poor dears, are bewildered by too many choices. And the plenitude of information sources disperses "the national campfire," the cozy communitarian experience of the good old days (for liberals), when everyone gathered around—and was dependent on—ABC, NBC and CBS.

“I believe we need to re-regulate the media," says Howard Dean. Such illiberals argue that the paucity of liberal successes in today's radio competition—and the success of Fox News—somehow represent "market failure." That is the regularly recurring, all-purpose rationale for government intervention in markets. Market failure is defined as consumers' not buying what liberals are selling.

Easily manipulated and bewildered - that’s what Howard Dean and his liberal cohorts think of the American people.

The election in November was a relief.

This talk would have made me very depressed prior to the Republican take-over of Congress and the power of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.  Recall the phone interview Sean did with Senator Voinovich (R) who was caught off guard with the "Fairness Doctrine" and said "Uh, well, I like "fairness".  Who doesn't want "fairness"?"  Thank God for Conservative new blood headed to DC.

Number one, it's obvious he never watches Fox News, like most other Daily Kus and Snobington Post idiots. Number two, he's lying by insinuating he has seen it. Number three he should be sued by Fox for "making these things up". I find it funny that whenever a Barking Moonbat accuses the Right of something, the Right isn't doing it, and the accuser is doing the very thing he's making accusations of........You couldn't make up this upside down world....

Submitted by Cactus Kurt on Tue, 11/30/2010 - 9:30am.

Howard Dean is insinuating that Americans can't make informed decisions.  With all of the choices available for news and commentary, Americans have overwhelmingly chosen Fox News and conservative talk radio while (MS)NBC and Air America flounder/fail.  Americans have weighed the alternatives and made their choices... kinda like the mid-term elections, huh Howard?

Submitted by MidAmerica on Tue, 11/30/2010 - 7:07am.

We need to keep in mind the definition of 'truth' has a whole different meaning to Liberals than it does to Conservatives.

In the Liberal world, the masses are dependant on a ruling class to guide them.  'Truth' is whatever guides the masses to a compliant passivity towards Liberal elites.  Liberals believe that the general mass of people are uninformed peasants who do not have the education or background to understand what is happening around them so media outlets that disseminate conflicting information are committing a treasonous crime because it breaks down public uniformity.

Conservatives believe truth is a full discussion of the facts and then let the people decide what THEY believe is in their best interest.

will permit more unfiltered "facts" to be fed to the American people like this, from CBS Marketwatch this morning: "In focus at this year’s U.N. Climate Change Conference, which runs through Dec. 10, is the push for a universally binding treaty to curb carbon emissions, a key cause of global warming."

Left alone, without anyone to counter, this "fact" will be repeated by school children and demagogues all across the nation.

"You would actually have to have some sanctioned human beings talking to the other side."

Howie, just who would "sanction" those hypothetical human beings who would talk to "the other side?" Would it be some government official who makes the viewing decisions for tens of millions of Americans?  Or would it be the American's themselves, Americans who are fully capable of making their own decisions as to who they'll listen to, who they will believe, who they will trust, and can "sanction" their own preferred sources with the use of a channel selector?

I don't know about the rest of you, but I am sick and tired of people like Dean telling me that I'm not capable of making my own choices, that I'm too "uninformed," to stupid, as to decide who I should prefer to "inform" me.

Many people did not graduate from college. ACA

Submitted by acaiguana on Wed, 12/01/2010 - 9:26am.

I hate to be the one to disagree with the implied slam against whether one graduated from college.

Off the top of my head, Bill Gates and Rush Limbaugh did not graduate from college.

This makes them simple High School Graduates.  A bit better than a GED I agree; but college itself is no mark of intelligence; education or ability.

On the other hand, it does show some depth to get a MA or PhD from a University.  I am not unimpressed with the list provided of FOX folks; but just because one did not graduate from college does not an idiot make.

I agree.  Post-high school

Submitted by stratman on Wed, 12/01/2010 - 9:02pm.

I agree.  Post-high school education does not automatically confer special abilities.  I know people who didn't graduate from high school who are smart people able to perform and earn just like a college graduate.

The point of this list, I think, is the formal educational disparity between these highly visible TV personalities on various channels who arrogantly want us to be led by their opinions as if they were pantheons of critical thought.

It's is not that one needs a law degree to teleprompt the news to us, but it is another thing when certain non-degreed individuals are positioned to discuss Law as if they had expert insight when they do not.  All too often in the news we see/hear/read reporters and journalists reporting on topics they have little knowledge.  For example, Tom Blumer of NB exposes economic journalistic idiocy frequently.
