In one of the more insulting comparisons seen in recent memory, Albany Times Union editorial cartoonist John de Rosier does a major disservice to the honorable men who served during the Battle of Iwo Jima, by depicting recent efforts of Democrats to pass a non-stimulating ‘economic stimulus plan' as equally heroic.
The cartoon shows Democrats in the role of the Marines featured in the Iwo Jima Memorial, a sculpture based on the famous photo by Joe Rosenthal entitled Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima. The exception to this replication lies in the flag being raised - the Dem's are trying to hoist a ‘bailout flag' as opposed to a flag of the United States.
If that weren't insulting enough, the cartoon also shows the Republican Party mascot, the elephant, trying desperately to pull the flag down.
In short, the Democrats are trying to save our nation by heroically raising up the Obama bailout flag, while the villainous Republicans are trying to destroy our nation by stopping their efforts.
More below the fold...
De Rosier's clear endorsement of the Obama bailout plan as a nation-saving measure, would seem to indicate that he also likely endorsed a similarly free-market abandoning effort passed by Bush late last year.
Yet, de Rosier's archives are wrought with sarcasm and skepticism of the Bush bailout plan. On September 24th, Bush is depicted as a car salesman trying to smooth talk his customer into buying into the Bush/Paulson bailout plan, only for the customer to suddenly realize that he was the one who once sold him an ‘Iraqi lemon back in '03.'
On September 23rd, he illustrated the average taxpayer as getting soaked and sunk by the bailout plan.
And of course, de Rosier opted to go with the bailout plan as a ‘pig in lipstick' card on October 3rd.
In four short months, the Times Union cartoonist has gone from labeling a $700 billion bailout plan as a pig in lipstick, a sinking boat, and a defective car, to labeling a far more reckless $819 billion bailout plan as a heroic effort to save our nation.

Free speech is free speech
January 30, 2009 - 14:29 ET by SpaceManSpiffOn several levels, this cartoon is no different the the ones misflame98 posted. All of them invoke thought on the subject, clearly reflected by the majority schools of thought on the left and right of politics. Liberal thought is dominated by emotion, while Conservative thought is dominated by logic. Logic should always prevail.
What is most pleasing to discover are the litany of comments left for this cartoon at it's source (use the link). The majority of the comments see 'stimulus' as the pork spending bill it is, and associate the 'elephant' as the hero who is trying to stop it. The cartoonist left it completely open to interpretation. The 'war is lost' cartoons, however, are clearer in their depiction of Democrats active attempt to derail the war.
Additionally, we are dealing with two entirely different situations. The merits of spending bills should always be debated, but wars should never be lost.
I really enjoy viewing liberal cartoons because they are so absurd and full of false logic. Besides, cartoons are the best way to sway the opinion of the ignorant masses.
YOU MISSED THE FRIGGIN POINT!
January 31, 2009 - 00:50 ET by JWFYou missed the point! Oh my friggin gawd you missed the friggin point!
The picture of the men raising the flag at Iwo Jima is one of the defining pictures from the battles of WWII. So defining, STATUES have been created from the picture.
GET THAT? DEFINING. Why is it defining?
6800 men American men DIED so that those men could raise that flag! They made the ultimate sacrifice for this country.
What is wrong with you that you can not see this? What is wrong with you that you are not outraged by this?
This cartoon is not funny or absurd. It is a slap in the face at all that are thankful to the men that have died for this country.
Sincerely,
a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

January 30, 2009 - 13:58 ET by StarAZMy Dad was a doctor on a destroyer anchored off Iwo as they brought the smashed up boys back from the beach--at one point, he had been taking care of casualties for almost 30 hours straight when someone yelled, "Hey, doc, they are putting the flag on that rock." He saw the first raising. To compare that to those idiots in Congress shoving through what everyone knows is a crappy bill is disgusting. Let me guess, this little genius is young.

As the son of a Marine who served for five years...
January 30, 2009 - 16:07 ET by R D Helm...much of it "in country" during the Korean War, I find that "cartoon" penned by John de Rosier to be despicable beyond words.
This worthless, insignificant little sh*t-stain puke of a cartoonist has managed to use the very freedom he now enjoys to savagely insult the memories of those six brave souls, five who were Marines and one a Navy corpsman, who literally risked their lives to raise the second flag on that spot that day.
Only minutes before, a smaller flag had been placed on that very same spot. In both instances, there were Japanese bullets still flying around all over the place.
Three of the Marines who helped to raise that flag didn't survive the war, and in fact, died not long after that famous photo was snapped.
How dare this America-hating, undeserving ingrate sully their memories in such a hideous fashion.
How dare he compare what those six brave, freedom-loving individuals did that day on that barren island to what those thieving, lying bastards in Washington are currently up to, which is fleecing this nation's treasury for their own gain, and leaving our descendants to foot the bill for their criminal treachery.
While I will defend de Rosier's right to publish whatever he likes with my last bullet or my last breath, it still doesn't excuse what this ass has done here.
As someone who defines "justice" as being when people get what they deserve, it would bother me not at all if this individual were to encounter a Marine on a sidewalk somewhere in Albany, and was taught to respect his ancestors and their accomplishments by having his person solidly bounced off a brick wall six or eight times.
Now, if you will excuse me, I have to clean the puke off my keyboard so that I may compose an email to the Albany Times Union that just might melt their hard drive.

January 30, 2009 - 19:17 ET by danebramageI'm a former Marine. While I'm too young to have been at Iwo, I've known two men who were (as well as America-friendly Okinawans who were present during the savage fight for that island). I've also been a student of the Pacific War since before it was cool to be one, so I know a great deal about the courage and suffering that occurred in that theater.
That having been said, I think people here are seriously overreacting. Political cartoonists use iconic imagery as their stock-in-trade. Yeah, it's ridiculous to equate the bailout with conquering Mt. Suribachi, but that's mostly because the bailout has been anything but a struggle (and anything but a victory for America). The struggle has all been on the anti-bailout side. But that aside, military metaphors in political cartoons are a dime a dozen. How many times has Washington crossing the Delaware been used? Yet when it is, does anyone scream about how inappropriate it is to use that image, given the great suffering the Revolutionary soldiers endured? I've never heard it.
Again, I'm not saying it's not a stupid cartoon. It is. I just think we shouldn't look to be offended by every little thing. That's what liberals do.
I have never met a former marine.

I Just Don't See It...
January 30, 2009 - 23:41 ET by The7SticksBeing the grandson of not one, but at least three brave American soldiers in WWII, I have to say that it could be a lot worst. I mean, this isn't even at the degree of disgust that the DePalma movie Redacted was. I use the saying that a Supreme Court justice said about obscenity: "I know it when I see it." I know when our brave men and women in uniform are insulted, and as far as I can tell, the only thing I see insulting about it is toward the Republicans. I guess you could argue that what is insulting is that it implies only Democrats wear the uniform, which is quite a stretch to say the least.
As an amateur cartoonist myself, I would say the cartoonist succeeded in what he was trying to do: Incite outrage. Whether you're liberal or conservative, a cartoonist's job is to incite outrage. That was what the Danish cartoonists were trying to do when they drew and printed the Mohamed cartoons: They wanted to confront not just Muslims, but also the liberal philosophers and foreign policy wonks that claim that Islam is a religion of peace. He only fails if you simply ignore it. If you did not want to be disgusted, then you shouldn't read the cartoon. That is the only way the cartoonist fails. If you don't want him to succeed, don't patronize him. Otherwise, I am not interested in standing outside of this cartoonist's office in order to throw bricks at him. You're just giving him what he wants: Free publicity.

January 31, 2009 - 02:21 ET by Rush FanFor a liberal cartoonist like John de Rosier, it's a demeaning, over-the-top cartoon.
For Nancy Pelosi, the botox-infected Speaker of the House, it's her foul mouth spewing Bush 'a total failure' or Bush comments 'beneath the dignity of the office'.
For Senate Majority Leader Dingy (as Rush likes to call him) Harry Reid, it's calling President Bush "dangerously incompetent" or Bush Is The Worst President Ever. Dingy Harry is the patriot and defender of our military men and women who said in the middle of the war in order to encourage and support our troops: "The Iraq War is lost."
