Press Defends Illegal Leaking - Again

The US media seems to think that their job description includes deciding what information is and is not legal to leak and print- never mind that we elect Presidents, Senators and Representatives to do this, not members of the scribbling class. This arrogance and complete lack of care for their fellow Americans was famously demonstrated in the NSA and SWIFT banking exposes by the New York Times resident anti-Americans, James Risen and Eric Lichtblau.

However, these are not the only such cases. Recently, Risen has once again exposed classified data with the aid of hidden law-breakers in the government. In this case, Risen exposed a CIA-Mossad operation to destabilize Iran. Risen has been subpoenaed by a federal court to reveal who gave him this data, but predictably, he sees his mission of aiding America's enemies and assisting said enemies to kill American citizens as more important that assisting the government to uphold laws about leaking sensitive information. And equally predictably, the rest of the mainstream media is rallying to his defense. Haaretz, an Israeli news source, reported on the topic today, casting Risen in the role of victim.

According to Haaretz,

The Bush administration is prolonging the hunting season against journalists. The latest victim is James Risen, The New York Times reporter for national security and intelligence affairs. About three months ago, a federal grand jury issued a subpoena against him, ordering Risen to give evidence in court. A heavy blackout has been imposed on the affair, with the only hint being that it has to do with sensitive matters of "national security." But conversations with several sources who are familiar with the affair indicate that Risen has been asked to testify as part of an investigation aimed at revealing who leaked apparently confidential information about the planning of secret Central Intelligence Agency and Mossad missions concerning Iran's nuclear program.

Haaretz goes on to bring up the infamous Valerie Plame hoax to support their argument that the Bush Administratioj is 'waging war on journalists', repeating the false claim that Vice-President Richard Cheney's then chief of staff, L. Lewis Libby leaked Plame's name. As a matter of fact, it was State Department hack Richard Armitage who actually first mentioned Plame's name, though I am not sure how much leaking was involved concerning someone who was listed as a CIA employee in Who's Who!

Haaretz, in the person of reporter Yossi Melman, also seems to misunderstand the First Amendment. Melman says,

In Israel, military censorship would have prevented the publication of details such as these. But in the U.S., where the principle of freedom of the press is sacred and anchored in the constitution, there is no compulsory and binding censorship. There is, however, an expectation there that the press will show responsibility. This expectation has increased in recent years, particularly with the conservative Bush administration and in the wake of the events of September 11, 2001 and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Yes, there is freedom of the press. And yes, the Bush Administration is (very slightly) more proactive in trying to enforce laws against criminal leaking that can get Americans killed- something both Risen and Melman obviously don't consider to be important. However, it has been long established that said freedom does not extend to assisting people to leak info to hurt the United States, nor are reporters allowed to determine what info should and should not be published. There are laws on the books about leaking information, and the Pentagon Papers case notwithstanding, government leakers are in fact breaking the law and reporters who then publish that info and refuse to cooperate can and in my opinion should be prosecuted as accomplices up to and including treason.

In the end, what Risen's source did was to leak information that assists the United States' enemies and hurts the U.S. That is treason, in addition to breaking the law on classified information. Risen surely knew what he was doing and gleefully published it in an attempt to hurt the Bush Administration, since he cannot or will not realize that he is not hurting the Bush Administration but rather hurting his own country- not that he would care about that. Risen strikes me as a person who would rather see Muslim fanatics running the United States than an elected Republican President. I hope that the court fines Risen and his employer to the full extent of the law and throws him into prison for as long as it takes to get him to testify. if he will not testify, then keep him in prison. He is an accomplice to his source's treason. That in itself is a crime, and he ought to be held responsible. And for the rest of the media, cheerleading for traitors exposes your own vested interests. be careful- the American people are slow, but not stupid and sooner or later they will wake up and demand compensation for your long-standing work to help destroy your own country. Of course, leaking is a

Of course, leaking is a capital crime that deserves the death penalty if the leftist agenda is harmed by it. ie. plamegate.

Treason indeed to the

Treason indeed to the utmost.

I am so angry reading this and knowing nothing about the latest concerning all of this from anyone in the msm...I am not surprised, just outraged and disgusted.

Thank you Mr. Newcomb for this important info.

Risen and his treasonous cohorts I hope rot in prison.

I hope the NYTs gets fined to the extent they fold.

Hope I know is a word we are familiar with lately, but in this case that is all I can do.

Please keep us updated.

The

Haaretz is just the Israeli

Haaretz is just the Israeli branch of the NYT.  No surprise there!

Shooting down the satellite

Shooting down the satellite with one of the 3 missiles we had was another instance. Letting the world know we only had 3 chances to hit it!

No one picked up on that but me that I know of, but the AP let that out and, of course, no by-line credit. I say yank their licenses and line them up against a wall, not necessarily in that order.

we had three *modified* missiles

for the ASAT mission. We had plenty more in shore installations and on other ships for ABM work.

We only needed one shot. this means we have two more ready unless they've been reprogrammed. And we demonstrated that the reprogramming doesn't take very long and can be done at any time. Basically, we put the Media on alert. Without their comm birds, Al Jazeerah is effectively neutered.

One day some important people will wake up to the Propaganda Wars and treat them with the seriousness they deserve. Just because the enemy is using lies, deceit and terrorists as weapons doesn't mean we need to use the same. Push hard enough and American government will have nothing to lose. Erode their power and their standing in the world far enough and even the launch of a nuclear warhead into Royal palaces and terrorist "holy" sites won't reduce their standing any further.

The satellite shootdown was probably the first real "return fire" of the Propaganda War. And it was a *doozy*! :)

"to call an illegal immigrant an "undocumented alien" is the same as calling a streetcorner drug dealer an "unlicensed pharmacist".

What I find so frustrating

What I find so frustrating about this is the apparent reluctance of the Bush administration to aggressively prosecute these traitors.

I am sick of these people putting American lives in danger. It is long past time something was done about it.

And Risen should be arrested and sent straight to GITMO.

Theme for Election '08: I want my mommy!

no need to worry

I'm sure there's a set of guidelines out there for professional journalists, to make sure they don't use "inflammatory" language and give the "targeted" party enhanced coverage in order to stop any "profiling"...

...oh wait, that didn't happen. At least not in any way that *helps* America, only in ways that hurt.

Leak Confusion

Why are you focusing on the press as the problem?

Shouldn't we be focused on the original leaker?

Isn't it the government's responsibility to prevent leaks?

All I see here is a government that can't control it's employees.  The press reporting is not the problem as far as I'm concerned.

If nobody leaked in the first place, there would be nothing for the press to report.

Your focus is wrong.  Risen isn't the enemy, the idiot that leaked to him is.   Get to the root of the problem.

Risen is the emeny...one of

Risen is the enemy...one of many.

You can't be that blind.

Really too bad you refuse that simple little fact just to cause trouble as usual...

Troll on...as you will.

the corrupt mainstream

the corrupt mainstream media is NB's focus

what if

what if your "leaker" is a member of the Media planted?

If information is ammunition, the Media has the same responsibility and expectation as anyone else. You aren't justified to go on a shooting spree because someone gave you ammunition. Nor do you go on a killing rampage to try to make the guy who gave you the bullets look bad. He's an idiot, but *you'd* be the killer, and the worst of the two.

What's funny is, when some guy posts something non PC and "offensive" there's no outcry when the website that held that comment is censured or shut down. It becomes the responsibility of a website, and even an ISP if child porn for example is found. Or if there's a link to some copyright encryption cracking-things that users posted that weren't even sanctioned by the site. Why does the old school Media think it does not have responsibility for what it *chooses* to print? Because *nothing* ends up on the NYT that isn't carefully worded, analyzed, spun, biased and modified for maximum emotional mayhem.

The real problem comes when they decide it's more important to protect the religious and world conquering sentiments of the R"oil" middle eastern families through self censorship and spin guidelines but refuse to apply similar standards on their own to protect the nation which supports and subsidizes them.

But, let them print what they choose. And let them suffer the consequences of their actions. Because Freedom to do things is not Freedom from Consequences. Print lies and there will be consequences. Print inflammatory rhetoric and the resultant riots are your responsibility. Glorify a killer and when he thanks you from beyond the grave in a letter, well guess what?

Adults accept responsibility. Children try to avoid it. The NYT is being a very selfish, naughty child and needs to be disciplined before it grows up into something evil and nasty.

Shouldn't we be focused on

Shouldn't we be focused on the original leaker?

Concur, Leon, and I am overjoyed that you agree with me that the fact that someone committed a theft of government property by sending these secrets to the NYT is the real story.

THerefore I am certain that you will agree that the NYT should now turn the material back over to the government without publishing it and then turn the miscreant over for prosecution by the feds/

I can't wait to see them in court testifying as to how they received the secret material and pointing their finger at the accused person in the dock and say "he is the traitorous bastard who gave it to me!!!!"

Protecting Sources

I understand the desire of the media to protect a source of information. However, not when that information is classified data.

The fact is, the "leaker" committed a crime. A serious crime that is tantamount to treason or sedition. Even if the leaker disagrees with American policies, to leak confidential classified information is to enable an enemy.

This is why Risen should be compelled to testify & reveal his source. The source broke laws. The source acted against their nation. In addition, who knows if the source is simply a mole planted in our government to cause it harm?

The truth is, moles are present and they have acted to do us harm in our history. Many cases may not have made it to the national media, but they have happened. So, how do we know if Risen's "source" is a plant or not? Risen himself may simply be a dupe whose maniacal obsessive hatred of President Bush has clouded his ability to reason that harm to America is harm to the NYT & all involved in the situation.

The leaker committed a very, very serious crime, & Risen is guilty of aiding & abetting that crime of he fails to reveal where & from whom he got his info. Simple as that!
