Notable Quotables: Thrilled by Obama's ‘Almost Biblical’ Success;’ ‘Appalled’ by ‘Vulgar’ Celebrations of Bin Laden's Demise

Rounding out the news of the past couple of weeks, the media elite struck two contradictory themes — with journalists saluting the “courage,”“guts” and “cool hand” of Barack Obama in ordering the mission that killed Osama bin Laden, even as the liberal media were “repelled” and “appalled” by the “vulgar” and “idiotic” celebrations of everyday Americans to the news of the terrorist leader’s demise.

The latest edition (PDF) of MRC’s bi-weekly Notable Quotables newsletter captures the flavor of liberal media coverage since bin Laden’s death, including the bitterness of some on the far left, including the left-wing journalist who griped that it “was not justice” but rather “one killer [the United States] killing another.”

Here are some of the best quotes from the issue; for the entire edition, visit www.MRC.org:

“Appalled” by “Vulgar” Celebrations of bin Laden’s Demise

“Some Americans celebrated the killing of Osama bin Laden loudly, with chanting and frat-party revelry in the streets. Others were appalled — not by the killing, but by the celebrations.... ‘The worst kind of jingoistic hubris,’ a University of Virginia student wrote in the college newspaper, The Cavalier Daily. In blogs and online forums, some people asked: Doesn’t taking revenge and glorying in it make us look just like the terrorists?”
— New York Times reporter Benedict Carey in a May 6 news story, “Celebrating a Death: Ugly, Maybe, but Only Human.”

“At the news of Osama bin Laden’s death, thousands of people — most of them college-aged and in requisite flip-floppy collegiate gear — whipped up a raucous celebration right outside the White House gates that was one part Mardi Gras and two parts Bon Jovi concert....It felt a little crazy, a bit much. Almost vulgar....When I saw that folks were celebrating in the streets at the news of bin Laden’s death, my first reaction was a cringe. Remember how we all felt watching videos of those al-Qaeda guys dancing on Sept. 11?”
— Washington Post “Metro” section columnist Petula Dvorak, May 3.

“It’s idiotic to treat these kinds of international events like sporting events, like it’s the World Cup that we’re cheering for here....I think that this kind of jumping up and down, chanting ‘USA, USA,’ sends a message of almost sort of blood lust. I think we need to be really careful about that.”
— Correspondent Jeremy Scahill of the left-wing The Nation magazine, on PBS’s Tavis Smiley, May 2.

Awed by the “Almost Biblical” Nature of Obama’s Success

“President Bush tried, President Clinton tried, but Barack Obama was the one who had the courage and the guts and the coolness, and took that chance....It was enormously, enormously courageous.”
— ABC’s Barbara Walters on The View, May 4.

“Professor Obama turned into General Obama and ran this incredible, incredible raid. That took a lot of guts, the kind of thing you do see in a Hollywood movie.”
— Bloomberg columnist Margaret Carlson on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, May 4.

“By calmly and meticulously overseeing the successful targeting of Osama bin Laden, President Barack Obama just proved himself — vividly, in almost Biblical terms — to be an effective commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the United States.”
— Ex-Newsweek correspondent and editor Howard Fineman writing at the Huffington Post, May 2.

Now, Barack Obama Is “Unbeatable”?

“Gas prices may finally be going down. The report last week shows jobs were added to the economy, and, of course, Osama bin Laden is dead. Does this make Barack Obama unbeatable in the coming election?”
— Anchor Carol Costello on CNN’s Newsroom, May 9.

Touting Obama’s “Cool Hand” vs. GOP “Clown Show”

“Barack Obama: The cool hand directs the operation, step by step. All this time, the crazies were talking birth certificates, he was working, planning, leading, bringing America’s strength and brains to the enemy hideaway....Will this make the Republicans look for someone who can do what Obama can do? Or will they keep on celebrating the clown show? Will they stop enjoying their passion and go from cheering their buffoon parade to finding a real pick to put up against a proven master and commander?”
— Chris Matthews opening Hardball, May 2.

The “Devoted” and “Pious” Mrs. Osama Bin Laden

NBC’s Ann Curry: “After more than 10 years of marriage, Amal was known to be devoted to him....She was in the room when her husband died. Amal is from Yemen, a country Osama considered his ancestral homeland, and she was much like him: simple, pious, not interested in luxuries like his other four wives. And it appears she lived his life on the run.”
Terrorism expert Evan Kohlman: “She joined bin Laden and she traveled with him during one of the most difficult parts of his life, which is when he was mostly on the run traveling across Pakistan, Afghanistan with few luxuries. And yet, she stuck by him.”
— NBC’s Today, May 6.

Far Left Whines Over bin Laden: “One Killer Killing Another”

“I’m glad he’s gone. But I just feel something has — we’ve lost something of our soul here in this country. And maybe I’m just an old school American who believes in our American judicial system.... [Snarls] ‘What do we need a trial for, just get rid of him.’ The second you say that, you’re saying that you hate being an American. You hate what we stand for, you hate what our Constitution stands for.”
— Left-wing filmmaker Michael Moore on CNN’s Piers Morgan Tonight, May 5.

“People cheer because they thought they saw justice, but this was not justice....This was one killer killing another, a big killer, the United States government, killing another, someone who’s actually a smaller one, bin Laden.”
— Journalist Allan Nairn on the far-left Democracy Now radio program, May 2.

“So when does SEAL Unit 6, or whatever it’s called, drop in on George Bush? Bush was responsible for a lot more death, innocent death, than bin Laden. Wasn’t he, or am I wrong here?”
— Left-wing radio host and former CNN producer Mike Malloy on The Mike Malloy Show, May 2. (Listen to the audio)

Nauseating

Submitted by rammingspeed on Mon, 05/16/2011 - 6:33pm.

Sickening drivel related by the naive, gullible, squishy, infantile idealists/elitists of the American left. Typical, repetitive crap. They write for their own echo chamber of fellow losers. Misinterpreting the killing of Bin Laden as revenge and blood lust is so painfully stupid and indicative of the inability to think deeply, I cannot read it without literally feeling nauseated.

Obama is just plain gauche in

Submitted by dscott on Mon, 05/16/2011 - 7:09pm.

Obama is just plain gauche in his publicly taking credit for Bin Laden's death. The people who celebrated Bin Laden's death are only expressing relief. The only thing vulgar here is Obama posturing as something he is not.

Uhm, Jer, ever since OBL has

Submitted by dscott on Wed, 05/18/2011 - 12:11pm.

Uhm, Jer, ever since OBL has been killed, the MSM has proudly embraced the point that Obama ordered it. The MSM is nothing more than a shill for the Obama regime. Do you really think the daily phone conference calls with the MSM coordinators stopped when Rahm Emanuel left the WH????? Most MSM outlets and shows including Barbara Walters are praising Obama on TV for the death of Bin Laden. How is this less vulgar than the people cheering in the streets? There is a difference between acknowledgment/reporting (recitation of the facts) and praise (the positive outlook of the recitation).

Did SNL not just skewer Obama over crowing about killing Bin Laden in his immigration speech? If your fellow liberals recognize this, why can't you? I went over the immigration speech by the way, and no, there is no reference to Bin Laden in that speech. http://www.nationaljournal.com/whitehouse/text-obama-s-speech-on-immigra...

Just because Obama doesn't openly dance on OBL's grave doesn't mean his surrogates aren't doing it for him.

btw- paraphrasing what you said on another thread, the OBL got what he deserved, no dispute there.

In 2003, the conservative media engaged in a veritable orgy of adulation over Bush's triumphant landing and Iraqi victory speech on the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln. Heck, even Chris Matthews got all tingly-legged.

It seems to me according to your logic, that incident--and the fawning coverage--must be characterized as examples of George Bush himself "publicly taking credit" for our success in Iraq in the same manner Obama is now publicly taking credit for OBL's demise.  I disagree with you in both cases.

"the conservative media

Submitted by dscott on Wed, 05/18/2011 - 3:03pm.

"the conservative media engaged in a veritable orgy of adulation"

Huh? Odd, I don't remember the MSM being very charitable over Bush flying a jet and landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier??? The media conservative????? Much less the crew of the ship hanging the banner congratulating the POTUS for making and seeing through the decision to take down of Iraq. Seems to me they were aghast at the whole spectacle. In fact, as soon as the Dems got over seeing Iraq taken down so quickly they were promptly anti-war at which time the MSM fell in line to support the Dem message. The MSM never liked George W Bush and never cut him any slack during the 8 years he was POTUS. These were the guys who never missed an opportunity to imply W was stupid, ignorant, a puppet of Cheney, etc... The idea that they would have an orgy of adulation over Bush is nonsensical.

But then changing the subject from the MSM's vulgar display of pro-liberal-government propaganda should not be surprising. When even SNL recognizes the MSM's propagandizing by attributing it to Obama directly, its obvious the narrative originated in the WH. (As I proved with link to the actual speech, Obama made NO reference to Bin Laden.) This was no different than Paul McCartney proclaiming Bush wouldn't know what to do in a library in Obama's presence and Obama condoning it. The only difference there was degree of separation, the approval by condoning was no different.

The only reason why the MSM even mentioned it was to project their own vulgarity onto the demonstrators lest they be defending themselves against the charge. This is typical of liberals, projecting wrong doing in order not to be accused much less address the issue of their own misdeeds.

No smelling salts necessary,

Submitted by dscott on Wed, 05/18/2011 - 5:08pm.

No smelling salts necessary, by Media Matters own admission ONLY Chris Matthews had a tingle in his leg for Bush showing leadership. All that shows is how excitable Chris Matthews was for a moment until the MSM toed the Bush lied line which Matthews promptly followed.

All the other excerpts from known liberals such as Caddle was their left handed compliments of how well Bush pulled off a savvy political photo op. When you read their comments their envy of the PR coup landing on the aircraft carrier clearly comes through. They certainly didn't come to praise Caesar, but to bury him. The conservatives like Brit Hume gave their usual appraisal and of course by liberal standards Fox News doesn't count anyway, so claiming a positive comment from any FNC newscaster as proof in general of the MSM's approval doesn't wash.

And lets not forget all the snide remarks all over that piece about Bush's national guard service in which they have yet to retract the false allegations leveled by the now discredited Dan Rather. I find it interesting Media Matters still hasn't corrected that piece regarding the national guard issue, meaning they are (not were) perfectly happy to engage in disinformation against the public. Given such willingness to deceive the public, any characterization that the MSM loved Bush before they hated him with such bile is pure hookum. (I'm being nice now)

That Jer was an epic fail.

Maybe the same folks who thought an aircraft carrier out in the Pacific ocean was just a short hop from the White House, and since the CIC just happened to be wearing his flight suit that day, he might as well drop by and announce the US had prevailed in Iraq.

at least that  CIC , Bush 43, earned the right to wear a flight suit by learning to fly fighter aircraft.

The only thing your  CIC  (Chicago Insider Clique) Obama knows about aircraft is:

1)  they take him on vacation

2)  they get Moochelle out of his hair on occasion by taking her out of the country.  On vacation.

You know damned well if left to his own devices he would have scrapped all the methods used to gain the intel that put Usama in the crosshairs.

And, of course, his usual no class rendition of me, me, I, I; and no nod to the administration or president who who set in motion long ago the viable train of actions that resulted in Usama's demise.

Obama's a worthless, lying ,purple-lipped putz, and that is all he will ever be no matter how much liberals kiss his ass in public for all to see.

Disgusting that such people are so busy wallowing in Obama love that they actually haven't a clue how moronic they appear.

There is the truth about Obama, and then there is what the liberals see and believe.

Without doubt, an effin' fantasy world.

Bush vs. Obama - Al Qaeda

Submitted by MrShy on Thu, 05/19/2011 - 2:55am.

"3) they can deliver Seal Team 6 to carry out his orders to do what his two predecessor CICs were unable to do: liquidate the most wanted mass murdering terrorist in US history."

Well, please, forget the joke that is B.J. Clinton and his tenure. Bin Laden and AQ were just a bunch of rag-head, camel-riding nuisances in a desert far away, to him and his do-nothing administration.

All the while, right under his nose, they began waging their holy war on our soil just weeks into his first term in 1993, and pulled off several major attacks on our interests worldwide throughout the 90's, culminating with the USS Cole bombing in 2000.

Now let's get to the two that matter:

*** Top Al Qaeda Leaders Captured or Killed Post-911 ***

UNDER BUSH:

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, regarded as one of the most senior operatives in al-Qaeda. Captured in Pakistan in 2003. Sent to Guantánamo Bay in 2006

Ramzi Binalshibh, senior al-Qaeda member. Captured in Pakistan in September 2002.

Mustafa Ahmad al-Hasawi, a Saudi, believed to be one of two key financial figures to have arranged funding for the 9/11 attacks. Captured in Pakistan in 2003

Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali, accused of serving as a key lieutenant to Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, his uncle, during the 9/11 operation.

Walid bin Attash, thought to have helped two of the hijackers, Nawaf al-Hamzi and Khalid al-Mihdhar, to check out US flights in Asia.

Usama al-Kini, head of al-Qaeda in Pakistan and on the FBI’s list of most wanted terrorist suspects. Killed in a missile attack in South Waziristan in January 2009

Abu Jihad al-Masri Khakaina, Egyptian al-Qaeda operative described by the US as the group’s propaganda chief. Killed in a Predator strike on North Waziristan in November 2008

Abu Suleiman al-Jazari, Algerian weapons expert and key al-Qaeda figure thought to have been the director of external operations. Killed in a Predator strike in May 2008

Two sources with fuller, more detailed listings of captures/kills during Bush's tenure:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article6831515.ece http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/2780525.stm

UNDER OBAMA:

Osama bin Laden, killed in May 2011 from covert Navy SEAL team mission.

Sheikh Said Masri, Egyptian believed to have acted as the operational leader of al Qaeda, killed in U.S. drone strike in Pakistani in May 2010.

Baitullah Mehsud, head of the Pakistan Taliban and commanded about 20,000 militants. Killed in a US missile strike on August 5 2009.

And Obama has captures/kills under his belt thanks to continuing the wise policies Bush & Co. put in place during the earlier years in the WOT. Not to mention, intel gathered and planning for this OBL mission goes as far back as 2007.

But like MD points out, keep putting your lips on Jug Ears' backside. It's what you do.
