MRC’s Notable Quotables: Evil Republicans Making War on the Poor

By Rich Noyes | April 18, 2011 | 14:07

This week’s edition of MRC’s Notable Quotables newsletter is chock full of liberal media quotes showing reporters’ slanted approach to the tax and budget issues now at center stage. In fact, there’s so much bad material, we had to add an extra page to our usually three-page newsletter (you can view/download the PDF here).

The whole issue is up over at www.MRC.org. Here’s a baker’s dozen of the worst quotes (including two video clips), all collected in the last couple of weeks:

Once Again, Evil Republicans Making War on the Poor

“Guess what? Paul Ryan is doing it on the backs of poor people and seniors...He’s not doing anything in terms of raising taxes to compensate and say, ‘you know what, the sacrifice is going to be shared across all areas of our economy.’ The rich get off like scoundrels.”
— Juan Williams on Fox News Sunday, April 10.

“You voted to give tax cuts to the richest Americans, the top two percent, you gave them tax cuts of about $800 billion over a decade, which is exactly what you guys are saying we now need to cut from health care for the poorest Americans. That was a trade off that you made. How can you justify that as a matter of ethics, morality or simply good conscience?...You are driving the government to bankruptcy and then balancing the budget on the backs of the poor....”
— CNN’s Eliot Spitzer to Republican Congressman Jason Chaffetz, In the Arena, April 5.

Ryan’s Budget Would “Kill Half” of Matthews’ Audience

“Most people who follow the news and watch the newspapers every day and watch television shows like this on Fox or this network, MSNBC, or anywhere, on CNN, they — those most attuned to this debate over the budget are either retired or close to it....Let them [Republicans] offer a big slash in Medicare, which is going to kill half the people who watch this show.”
— Chris Matthews talking about the House GOP budget plan on MSNBC’s Hardball, April 11.

Don’t Reduce Government Spending or “People Will Starve to Death”

“I stopped eating on Monday and joined around 4,000 other people in a fast to call attention to congressional budget proposals that would make huge cuts in programs for the poor and hungry....These supposedly deficit-reducing cuts — they’d barely make a dent — will quite literally cause more people to starve to death, go to bed hungry or live more miserably than are doing so now.”
— New York Times food writer Mark Bittman in a March 30 op-ed, “Why We’re Fasting.”

As Always: Women and Minorities Hardest Hit

“If it [the proposed Republican budget] respects the Treasury, what it does not respect are women’s rights, what it does not respect is the environment. Is it going to undermine potential success here if you force social issues on to the budget table?”
— Daytime anchor Contessa Brewer to Republican Congressman Mike Pence on MSNBC Live, April 1.

“Poor white people, poor black people are the ones who are oppressed by the right wing in this country, but they don’t seem to get that. They vote against their own interests all the time.”
— Headline News host Joy Behar on her Joy Behar Show, April 12.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Touting Victims of the Shutdown That Never Happened

“The shutdown will stop new funding for medical research and hope for desperate patients....Doctors at the National Institutes of Health would be forced to stop seven new clinical trials, four involving children, next week; and stop admitting new patients at 640 ongoing trials, 60 of them involving children with cancer.”
— ABC’s Jake Tapper on World News, April 6.

Correspondent Jonathan Karl: “And there’s the sixth grade class at Central Elementary in Coleraine, Massachusetts. They’ve been looking forward to visiting Washington D.C. on Monday.”
Unidentified girl: “The government is mean.”
Karl: “But now they may be due for an entirely different kind of civics lesson, as most of the city may be shut down.”
— ABC’s Good Morning America, April 7.

Matt Took the Spin Right Out of Chuck’s Mouth

Matt Lauer: “When you look at some of the things the Tea Party and others on the far right are asking for — no funding for Planned Parenthood, no funding for climate control, public broadcasting — does it seem to you, Senator, that this is less about a fiscal debate or an economic policy debate and they are making an ideological stand here?”
Democratic Senator Charles Schumer: “That’s exactly right, Matt. You’ve hit the nail on the head.”
— Exchange on NBC’s Today, April 6.

Right on Cue, Media Start Chirping for Higher Taxes

“He [Paul Ryan] doesn’t deal with the revenue side at all....His goal is to do 18 percent of GDP as revenue. That’s not enough. We’re going to have to raise some taxes and we’re going to have to face up to that...”
— Former Newsweek managing editor Evan Thomas on Inside Washington, April 8.

“Finding a way to raise taxes may well be the central political problem facing the United States.”
— New York Times chief economics writer David Leonhardt, April 13.

“Is raising taxes on the table?...Why shouldn’t the burden be equally shared? Why shouldn’t we put some of that burden on the wealthy and corporations?”
— Matt Lauer to Representative Michele Bachmann on NBC’s Today, April 13.

It’s “Awesome” Just to Be Near the “Anti-Reagan”

“If you were a kid in the Northeast during the 1980s, as I was, there is something awesome — in the literal sense — about sitting across a desk from Mario Cuomo, even if he now misplaces names and occasionally grasps for the point of an anecdote that has fluttered just out of reach. He was, at that time, the anti-Reagan, a powerful and resonant voice of dissent in the age of Top Gun and Alex P. Keaton. Cuomo, Ted Kennedy and Jesse Jackson were the three titans of the day who seemed to possess the defiance needed to rescue liberalism from obsolescence.”
— Correspondent Matt Bai in an April 10 New York Times Magazine profile of Cuomo.

And there's plenty more where those came from. Just click over to www.MRC.org for even more outrageous quotes from the liberal media.

I thought it was John Lewis being re-played again, but it's really Juan Williams now repeating that nonsense.  He can't do it with as much flair as Lewis.

I love how these idiots forget that more than 50% of the households in this country are NOT paying taxes.

*yawn*  ok, what's next?

misleading headline

Submitted by buttercup815 on Mon, 04/18/2011 - 3:45pm.

I seached in vain for the phrase ' evil repbublican' through the text of the articale but cannot find it ..maybe I'm missing something or you're just paranoid.

Let me clue you in.

Submitted by Lord-come-soon-... on Mon, 04/18/2011 - 3:56pm.

You'll notice that the word evil is not in quotation marks in the headline. That means it's a descriptive reference to the quotes contained in the articale (sic). Every one of the quotes contained in the articale (sic) portrays Republicans as evil, without using the word evil. Just like I could portray you as just another liberal dummy without necessarily using the term "liberal dummy". I could use "koolaid drinker", or "leftist", or "completely out of touch with reality". See the difference?

Actually no

Submitted by buttercup815 on Mon, 04/18/2011 - 4:15pm.

They are two different things. The word 'evil' has a very special meaning while phrases like 'leftist or koolaid drinker' are just modern slang. So I again suggest that this post is over reacting.

So when a libtards says

Submitted by Boudin on Mon, 04/18/2011 - 8:00pm.

Repubs want to kill children, we shouldn't take it serous? Even though the libtards literally do kill children.

So they can suggest we want to kill folks, but suggesting they are calling us evil is crossing the line?

On occasion, buttercup, mis-reads happen with NB posts---

but generally speaking, if you speak your mind, and someone disagrees, you will be so advised.

Free country, but if you can't take the heat engendered by a statement of yours, and be prepared to defend it as necessary, maybe NB's ain't your cup of tea.

I'm new here too, though I was a commenter some years back under the name puggs. I read the post and was seething by the end, if you're a republican and conservative you can't see or hear this stuff,...

"These supposedly deficit-reducing cuts — they’d barely make a dent — will quite literally cause more people to starve to death, go to bed hungry or live more miserably than are doing so now.”
— New York Times food writer Mark Bittman in a March 30 op-ed, “Why We’re Fasting.”

------------------------

You seriously think being told that you want people to starve to death and live in misery is a proper debate style? You have just complained that you weren't being treated civily enough by a regular here, and you defend this vile slander as okay dokey?

You do understand the concept of irony right?

We're child killers and you are huffy because you didn't get a cookie for saying that's perfectly acceptable?

I'm new here, but not new to politics, and this is the status quo for the left, and not even the hard left either.. I get abuse from people in my wife's family, because they pick up the idiot narrative, and demand to know why I think children with cancer shouldn't be treated.

The left has literally gone insane.

They had their perfect storm. The Congress the WH, and super majorities.. and all they could do, was against horrendously huge opposition from the PUBLIC AT LARGE, ram through an abomination of a heath care bill. They had nervana, and fell flat on their face, they were given a historic defeat in the midterms.. loosing the leftopia dream for another four generations..

and somebody has to pay.

The lamestreamers, the democrats, the nutroots, the union thugacracy, all are crying out for retribution. With the Lame Stream leading the charge..

and you with your pinky out as you sip from your cup, are astonished,.. we might feel strongly about being slimed like this?

Being called a "libtard" might to you be as unnoticable as throwing out rethuglican.. but I'm sorry, if you think being called a murderer for a simple budget argument is fair? What would you consider unfair?

When they could simply shut down less intrusive spending, but the dem hack left will TARGET the disabled and children..

then whine about how they were forced by us to do it.. they need not suffer much at all, but like teachers using kids as human shields in levy votes locally, they do it to hurt kids deliberately to try an force the parents to pass the levy. Thery COULD cut administraters, clerks, part time teachers..

but no, they ream the kids.

and scream it's all the voters fault..

this is exactly what democrats do.. and I'm sick of it, enough to work day and night to ram their heads into a brickwall of reality... and bring as many friends as I can convince. Won't be hard, a quick 30 minutes on the web showing them what their democrats are doing, when they know in their gut it's a lie...

Time the sane dems came out of retirement and took the wheel again.

Well Written

Submitted by m1xram on Wed, 04/20/2011 - 3:38am.

Mark, that went well. To further illustrate your point...

If the new budget is killing children and old people just image what will happen when Obama's plan to ruin the economic leader of the free world is implemented? Can anyone say "Worldwide Depression"? How many people will die then? Without jobs people will starve, won't be able to get medical care, or even keep warm. No money will be available to help other countries either.

This is the compassion of Liberals and Progressives, we may all die equally, just as long as they rule.

Actually, that's exactly what we want to do . . .

Submitted by Junk Science Skeptic on Mon, 04/18/2011 - 5:32pm.

As conservatives, libertarians, republicans, independents and moderates, most of us want to eliminate the poor, not by income redistribution, but by providing the opportunities and business environment where every able-minded/bodied person is gainfully employed creating goods, services and wealth.

So yes, in that sense, we are making war on the poor.

By all means..

Submitted by Boil It Down on Mon, 04/18/2011 - 7:53pm.

Let's promote that class warfare until we finally get some irrational people causing some real trouble in the streets. Maybe we could even get them to start killing one another for some great headlines. None of these people are looking at real solutions, they just want their side perceived as the winners.
