Chris Matthews Will Be ‘Emotional’ Tonight: We’re ‘Leaping Towards Something Better’

Photo of Rich Noyes.

On his syndicated Chris Matthews Show on Sunday, the conspicuously pro-Obama MSNBC host announced how he expected that “election night is going to be emotional for all of us....Particularly if it goes in that historic direction, it’s going to be very emotional for everybody. I mean, everybody.”

A few minutes later, in his closing commentary about the election, Matthews (a potential Democratic Senate candidate in 2010) offered a not-very veiled endorsement of Barack Obama, suggesting his election would mean a “leap towards something better and uniting our country as never before in our history.”

So we’ll be more united than we were after 9/11? More united than during World War II? Maybe the bartender who serves the Obama Kool-Aid at MSNBC had better cut Matthews off — he’s had a few too many.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

During a panel discussion of the significance of Obama’s election (which seemed to be the assumption of all of Matthews’ guests on Sunday), Time magazine’s Joe Klein announced how the election of an African-American president would be a “huge” and “profound” development:

We’re watching something huge taking place. And, you know, to go back to the African-American vote, there are an awful lot of African-Americans, I know, who don’t believe in their heart of hearts that white people will vote for a black man....with just cause, because of the way they’ve been treated in their lives. It is going to change — if this man is elected, the inner life of so many Americans is going — is going to change in the most basic profound sort of way.

A few moments later, Matthews announced that election night would be emotional:

I’m glad you used the word “huge,” Joe, because I think election night is going to be emotional for all of us. And I think, even those of us who do it for a profession, if this election goes — particularly if it goes in that historic direction, it’s going to be very emotional for everybody. I mean, everybody.

Of course, there are a lot of conservatives who will be quite distressed if Obama wins — not because they are against any progress by African-Americans but because they are disturbed thinking about the laws that might be passed by a liberal House and Senate and signed by the liberal President Obama in the White House.

Matthews revisited the theme in his closing thoughts of his November 2 show:

If Americans elect Barack Obama President, we will evidence for ourselves and for the world the truth said by our forefathers to be self-evident, not just that we are created equal, endowed with certain liberties, but that old founding notion of “we” has been replaced by something new and truly American.

So as we start this new century now at full speed, Americans seem on the verge of, in one vote, achieving two goals: taking a great American leap towards something better and uniting our country as never before in our history.

Why does Chris Matthews

Why does Chris Matthews think that electing Obama will "unite" the country???

After every election the country is divided between those who voted for the winner, and those who didn't.  Why would an Obama win be different.

Oh, I guess he means a Democrat President and a Democrat-controlled Congress and a Democrat-controlled Senate. One-party rule.  That's what Matthews thinks of as "unity."

And that  great American leap towards something better sounds way too much like China's Great Leap Forward to me.

Why does Chris Matthews

Why does Chris Matthews think that electing Obama will "unite" the country???

Because he gives him a tingle up his leg.

Chris just continues to prove that he is an idiot

Anyone who thinks that race relations will improve just because an AA is elected President is a fool.  While those  people who are indeed bigots will remain bigots, people who didn't vote for Obama for good and valid reasons are going to be so angry at how he got shoved down our throats by the MSM, by ACORN, by illegal monies, by flaming liberals with white guilt, as well being angry at being called racist, they may well figure "what difference does it make?"

As for "uniting the country " - only a idiot would expect Conservatives, who have been consistently trashed by the Left, to have any interest in uniting with them.  If Obama is indeed elected I will give his administration the same respect and consideration the Bush administration received.

IMO the Left has made it perfectly clear what they think of the Right and thanks but no thanks.

horrifying

now i really feel a chill up my leg.

Which state will sucede from the nation first?

Simple-minded

Simple-minded twaddle.

Libs love to sit on the throne of intellectual authority over all of us "knuckle-draggers" - that way they can justify their tyranny - yet they actually spew out the smost simple-minded crap.

Congressman Jim Moran said "it's a simplistic notion that if you have wealth, you are entitled to keep it."

And here we have Chrissy saying we're entering a better day.  Why?  Because Obama is black, and electing a black man will end the racial divisions that exist in America.

That is not only simple-minded, it's absolutely wrong.

He's been listening to

He's been listening to Obama for too long.  Everything is explained away by "hope" and "change" and "the fierce urgency of NOW"

And here we have Chrissy

And here we have Chrissy saying we're entering a better day.  Why?  Because Obama is black, and electing a black man will end the racial divisions that exist in America.

It is absolutely wrong, but I think if might Obama was elected fair and square, it might help with race relations.  If he does win, there will be so many people (like me) who are furious with the role of the media shoving Obama down our throats, not getting the truth out, that we will always be resentful of him.  Not helping race relations at all.

Race relations can not

Race relations can not possibly be helped simply by electing a black man to the presidency.  Millions of blacks are voting for Obama for the sole reason that he is black.  This is the exact opposite of helping race relations.

Race relations are only going to be helped when boths whites and blacks realize that we are all people - free and equal under God.  Most whites believe that way, but most blacks, as evidenced by their behavior in this election, do not.

They have been led around by the nose by race-mongers like Farrahkan and Jackson, and Rev. G-Damn the U.S. of KKKA, for so long that they have become the racists of our society.  Thei is why they see no problem with Obama calling his grandmother "a typical white person," while they cry foul at McCain referring to Obama as "that one" - which was an obvious reference to his portrayal as "the messiah" and was not a racial statement in the least.

Obama's election will further divide this country.

And Rev. Al says that just

And Rev. Al says that just electing Obama will not mean that America is not racist any more.

I don't know what will.

For people like Matthews, this election has been about 1 thing:

Race  - Constantly telling us how *historic* it is, how Obama never brings it up himself, and how the evil Republicans are going to make it about race....just you wait.  They even threw Bill and Hillary under the bus as racists for daring to stand in the way of histroy.

And do the people who proclaim how "inspirational" Obama is and that he will "unite the country" ever explain *why*?

Tell us again what a centrist he is, in light of his voting record and a campaign chock full of class warfare talk, Bush-bashing and race-baiting.

You've got to wonder if people like Matthews believe their own content-free platitudes (i.e., bull$h*t).

CM will definately need a

CM will definately need a smoke after this 'affair' is done with.

I hate to revel in someone else's misery but if McCain wins, I just won't be able to help myself!

I'm already

I'm already emotional!

Soon as I saw the Black Panthers with nightsticks at a voting precinct in Philly... I was mad, then a little afraid...then MAD AGAIN.

VOTE MCCAIN/PALIN

Me to TN mom.  Seems like

Me to TN mom.  Seems like should be illegal.  Oh wait, it helps Obama so it's OK.

BT

The bad thing is we are in a no win situation in regards to the media.  If McCain wins, the media will be furious that their "valient" efforts were thwarted and will be relentless in doggin' McCain.  If Obama wins, they will cover for him in  every way possible.

Thank God for the internet and sites like this.  We will all have to fight to get the truth out either way.

I agree Sea

It's lose lose for us and that's why I'm not watching.   No matter what happens, we have to figure out a way to do something about this disgusting media.

Funny, the libs never seem

Funny, the libs never seem to care about "uniting the country" when there's a Republican president. Well, guess what?

McNotObama '08

Exactly Chris!

I'm done with them.  IF they win, it will be by the sleaziest hateful tactics & complete disregard for any bit of fairness.

I'm still having faith that THE PEOPLE will have seen through this gross unfairness and that we will prevail, but if we don't, there is no way that I'm going to forget about how criminally unfair this was.

The Dems claim that

The Dems claim that Republicans "stole" the 2000 election. Th 2008 election was thrown by the media. By putting out tainted and biased information and withholding negative facts about Obama, the "mainstream media" effectively engaged in election fraud.

McNotObama '08

Damn straight!

"mainstream media" effectively engaged in election fraud.

I couldn't agree more.

Sea, I'll go further and

Sea,

I'll go further and suggest that Obama voters, outside the hardcore party faithful and fanatical core, get all their information on which they based their vote exclusively from the mainstream media.

McNotObama '08

"Criminally unfair" is

"Criminally unfair" is right.  Literally I believe.  Class action law-suit against the media anyone?

Great Idea Sea!

I wish we could.

Chris Mathews is a certified moron.

Chris Mathews is a certified moron!! At the end of today half of this country is going to be happy because they think they are getting something for nothing, and half are going to be furious that our country is being led down the road toward socialism.

Hmm, what's Chrissie going

Hmm, what's Chrissie going to do when he finds out he's one of the 25 million?

I'll bet that tingly feeling will be going down his leg instead of up.

Chrissy is right about one thing:

...if this man is elected, the inner life of so
many Americans is going — is going to change in the most basic profound
sort of way.

But not for the reason's he thinks.

I voted. Have you?

Right you are Dave. He is

3 Goals

...achieving two goals: taking a great American leap towards something better and uniting our country as never before in our history.

You forgot your other goal Chrissy - possibly electing the first President via affirmative action.

ugh

Fool. This country will be more divided than ever after this election, regardless of the turnout.

Obama: A glittering jewel of colossal ignorance. --RL

unite the country? Nope.

like many social engineering projects liberals have, Obama's will not unify.  It will accomplish the exact opposite of his intended objective.

when those transfer payments start getting made - when the producers in society are hit with even higher taxes that go to people who do not pay taxes today, it will highlight the difference between the 'makers' and the 'takers' in society.  it will be like gas on a flame and it will do the opposite of unify.

Straight to Hell

We're headed straigh to HELL but this dumb f*ck is too f*cking stupid to know it!

God Damn Chris Mathews and all the f*cking bastards like him!

Please!

I don't understand why the bosses at NBC would not have this guy neutered. I recall when he was, if not fair, at least respectful of an opposite opinion. Now I think his whoremoans are taking control of his mouth and limbs. His infatuation with TheOne may get out of hand (!) live and on camera. The least they could do is to have him serviced by a real pro. Wouldn't matter to me if it was done by Barney or Nancy as long as it was off-camera (and no audio, puleaze). After all, he to has that "privacy right" his heroes and heroines talk about.

BTW, that "Privacy Right" thing has always bothered me. I have decided a woman needs that privacy if she is such a blithering dumbass idiot that after being pregnant for almost nine months she suddenly discovers why she gained all that weight and has been eating dog biscuits with whipped cream. Then she decides to tell a Doctor to stick a medieval liquifier into the functioning brain of a fully developed human child BUT she doesn't want to hear the fetus...fetus...cry or feel "it" struggle for LIFE. I too would want the entire episode very private. Very quiet.
