Richard Dreyfuss on MSNBC Rails Against GOP Thieves, 'Tired of Being Called a Traitor'

Appearing on MSNBC Wednesday afternoon to promote his new movie, ‘America Betrayed,’ a left-wing screed produced by a former CNBC anchor that purports to be a “documentary” about the evils of the American government during the past seven years, actor Richard Dreyfuss slammed the Republican party as “corrupt through and through,” “adept at thievery,” and that “the rest of the country” abandoned New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Dreyfuss drew loud cheers from the liberal audience gathered around MSNBC's outdoor spot as he nonsensically declared: "I am tired of being called a traitor because I like my flag and I like -- and I support the troops."

His claim that New Orleans was "abandoned" is absolutely vapid: The Coast Guard responded rapidly, saving thousands from the rapidly rising flood waters. Millions of Americans donated money to help the victims. The federal government has pumped billions of dollars into reconstruction.

Even a clip from the film Dreyfuss narrated acknowledged billions of dollars in federal aid to Katrina victims, since he bemoaned “$2 billion of recovery money for Katrina was squandered due to waste, fraud, and abuse.”

And as for ‘America Betrayed,’ a July 24 article in Variety included a quote from the movie’s producer, Leslie Carde calling her film “a long, hard look at how this country handles disaster, which ones they indirectly cause and how corporate America and their friends in the White House profit from those disasters in the long run.”

Variety also gave some background on the producer: “Carde, a network TV journo and CNBC anchor, has made numerous visits to Iraq since 2003, including a trip for this doc.”

In today’s interview, O’Donnell herself seemed to buy into the loopy left-wing hype, at one point describing the hurricane as “a man-made disaster.” She quickly added a clarification: “because of the government’s response, some say.”

Dreyfuss played to the obviously left-wing crowd outside of MSNBC’s broadcast area, milking the applause and receiving cheers each time he bashed the Bush administration as corrupt or incompetent.

Here’s the exchange from about 3:25pm EDT:

NORAH O’DONNELL: And with the anniversary of Hurricane Katrina quickly approaching, a new documentary is shining a spotlight on our government's role in the worst man-made disaster in American history -- because of the government's response, some people say. Academy-award winning actor Richard Dreyfuss narrates ‘America Betrayed,’ a film that not only mentions Katrina but [drowned out by loud cheering of crowd outside MSNBC’s booth]....

CLIP FROM ‘AMERICA BETRAYED’

DREYFUSS NARRATING: In August of 2007, a government audit of the $30 billion congressionally-approved budget for reconstruction in Iraq, now shows that $8 billion is unaccounted for. And according to the Government Accountability Office nearly $2 billion of recovery money for Katrina was squandered due to waste, fraud, and abuse.
SENATOR BARACK OBAMA, AT HEARING: I've asked many times whether the no-bid contracts that were handed out in the wake of the hurricane have been terminated, and unfortunately I still have not received a clear answer.

END CLIP

O’DONNELL: And joining us now, Richard Dreyfuss, who narrates this new documentary [more loud cheering. Dreyfuss stands and begs with his arms for the crowd to keep cheering.] Don't you get enough praise and adoration? You're here. You're obviously famous. A lot of people know you, of course, even from the ‘Jaws’ movies. But you are narrating this documentary and bringing attention to Hurricane Katrina. Why?

RICHARD DREYFUSS: Well, Katrina was a natural disaster and the first time in history that the rest of the country abandoned a city or a state that had been the victim of a national -- of a natural disaster. And watching that happen was awe-inspiring. In Europe -- I was in Europe at the time, and they have 6,000 years on us on how to oppress the poor -- but they were struck dumb by how awful our coverage was.

O’DONNELL: You told me something very interesting that FEMA meeting the night before Hurricane Katrina struck. That was seen on television here in the United States, very few times. And yet in Europe, how many?

DREYFUSS: It was shown all the time, five, six times a day for three months.

O’DONNELL: And so what do you think that makes Europeans think about American competence and our government?

DREYFUSS: I don't think Europeans have any confidence in our government. I think that the last eight years has destroyed 200 years of respect and [loud cheers], and dedication. And I think that we have been the point of meaning and admiration in the world for very specific reasons, and George Bush trashed it.

O’DONNELL: So, you don't think that John McCain would be able to manage this government well, would have a different response than George Bush to a Hurricane Katrina?

DREYFUSS: I think the Republican party is corrupt through and through [cheers] and even the Republicans, like, like Buckley before he died, said we should lose this election, go into the wilderness and get cleansed. And I believe that's true. I think that they have been in office too long. I think that they're too adept at thievery, at moving the Constitution into places it never meant to go. I think that they have an extraordinary ability to divide rather than unite. And I think that I am tired of being called a traitor because I like my flag and I like -- and I support the troops. [cheers from crowd outside MSNBC’s booth]

I loved Richard in Jaws,

I loved Richard in Jaws, Mr. Holland's Opus and Once Around. Why the hell does he have to go and ruin it?  Why do these actors think that because they are given a public forum, they need to push their views on all of us?  My son is working on a TV series right now as an animator.  He's a moderate Republican.  He does not give any hint of his political affiliation for fear of losing his job!  But, Richard Dreyfuss can spew hate for this country and make even more money.  This just doesn't compute!!!

Wow Richard

Glad you can speak for all of Europe.Maybe you should do a poll of Europe.1000 people should represent all those people in those countries. While your at it look up hubris.

What are they talking about?

""O’DONNELL: You told me something very interesting that FEMA meeting the night before Hurricane Katrina struck. That was seen on television here in the United States, very few times. And yet in Europe, how many?

++++++++++++++++

What What What!

What is "that" and "it"?  What are these 2 mental giants referring to?  A FIMA meeting? Hurricaine Katrina? What the hell was shown "all the time, 5-6 times a day for 3 months?"  Katrina? How could he have told her the night before it struck it would be on European TV 5-6 times a day?

One of the Left's favorite Katrina fairytales

Someone with a better memory than me will have to pull up the exact info, but one of the Left's favorite Katrina fairytales involves a FEMA meeting with Bush the night before Katrina struck.

The meeting was recorded via streaming video over the net.  In that meeting, the Left claims that it shows how FEMA & Bush knew about the vulnerability of the levees but failed to warn New Orleans & were just twiddling their thumbs before the storm hit. A dupe (such as Dreyfuss) would think this is the case if they only watched a selectively edited and manipulated video.

Of course, if you watch the unedited video it shows the opposite.  Concern regarding the levees is discussed & it is recommended that New Orleans be evacuated immediately. If I recall, this was 48 hours before the levees actually broke.

I believe but am not certain that the edited, dishonest version of the meeting was used in Spike Lee's hateful HBO documentary on Katrina.   The unedited, honest version of the meeting was shown in (of all places) a Frontline documentary on PBS.

Good grief! So the

Good grief! So the Louisanna democrats are toooo stooopid to realize their category 3 levys are vulnerable to a category 5 hurricane unless President Bush calls them up and tells them??? Gosh, they were only warned about this for FORTY freaking years!

When asked if he went to war with Iraq to derail the impeachment vote: “I don’t think any serious person would believe that any President would do such a thing." - President Clinton (Dec 1998).

Agreed

The Nanny State Mentality regarding Katrina is just amazing. Katrina was the worst natural disaster in US history, yet it is somehow the government's fault that it happened.  Yes, the immediate follow up was poor (except for the the thousands of rescues by the Coast Guard & others), but if you listen to many of the critics, it's almost as if the government was supposed to stop the storm before it happened.

The other thing is that there is an assumption of risk.  If you live in the Gulf area, you know there is a chance a hurricane will wipe you out. If you live in the upper Midwest, you know there is a chance for a killer blizzard.  If you live in California, you know there is a chance of an earthquake.  If you live in the West, you know there is a chance of wildfires.  These are natural disasters that have happened for millions of years & the government can do nothing to prevent them.  It's is astounding that some people get angry when these things happen.

Gee...

another Hollywood leftist making another leftist anti-American movie...Brilliant!

Somebody needs to inform Mr. Dreyfus that it was tried several times and flopped each and every last time, but hey who am I to stop some A-Hole from pissing his money away.

"9 out of 10 doctors agree that flag burning is the number one killer of liberals."

and one more thing....

he was typecast as the loco shrink in "What About Bob" ( I love that movie).

wasn't he also

the university teacher who made a career out of a tribe he and his family supposedly discovered, except it was all a huge fraud, that he and his family had to commit even more frauds and fake events to perpetuate the big lie he was living off entirely?

I think that one would be more apropos to Hollywood political w@nkers and the liberal movement in general. One huge social experiment, based on fraudulent ideas that uses deliberately faked research to meet 'what should be' ideals in order to hide it's continuing failure.

"to call an illegal immigrant an "undocumented alien" is the same as calling a streetcorner drug dealer an "unlicensed pharmacist".

"You spend your money anyway you want and respect other's rights to do the same"

I knew Jaws should have

I knew Jaws should have eaten him when he had the chance!  Mr Dreyfuss you are going to wander around and around until Democrats and sociALISM COME UP AND BITE YOU IN THE ASS!!!!

LOL

hilarious. My girlfriend has that line as a ringtone. :)

I'm not as big a Jaws fan, but isn't there also a line in there about "needing bigger guns"? Because that seems to be true as well

"to call an illegal immigrant an "undocumented alien" is the same as calling a streetcorner drug dealer an "unlicensed pharmacist".

"You spend your money anyway you want and respect other's rights to do the same"

I love the first Jaws and

I love the first Jaws and like the second one too. My wife gets annoyed because even though I've seen the movies like 50 times I still watch when they come on TV.

The line about "needing bigger guns" I think is when Roy Schieder is in the boat dishing out chum to attract the shark and it comes out of the water toward him and he backs up into the cabin and tells Dreyfuss and Shaw that "we're gonna need a bigger boat".

Can't believe I know the movie that well.

I'm sure to idiots like Dreyfuss the shark represents the Bush administration and Republicans in general and guys in the boat are the Democrats coming to save the world.

Who cares what Europe thinks?

O’DONNELL: And so what do you think that makes Europeans think about American competence and our government?

Who the h-e-double-hockey-sticks cares?  Besides, there are a lot of European governments that fall far short of competence.

Since the world always comes to us when there's a big national disaster, someone must think we're competent.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

They Just Don't Get It

Nobody in the United States outside of Washington, New York, and Hollywood gives one flying flip what the stinking Europeans think about us and care even less about what they think about our government.

These people will never learn. It is the same ignorance about the American people that drove the Hussein Obama campaign to travel through Europe and to give a Hitleresque speech to the Germans in Berlin.

Only people who are so in love with government think that the disaster in New Orleans was a problem of the federal government's response. State and local authorities dropped the ball down there, not to mention a population of people who chose to stay in the path of a hurricane in an area that is below sea level.

I know hundreds of liberals who ripped the Bush administration and the federal government for not helping the people of New Orleans. None of them raised one finger to help those souls down there.

Just how many european ships are in Georgia ports

delivering supplies and medical aid to the victims of soviet oppression?

I believe Dreyfuss is a liar who believes that whatever he says automatically becomes true.

Anyone who takes an honest look at New Orleans knows that while the feds made some mistakes, the biggest problems by far were caused by Ray Nagin the mayor and the governor who thankfully does not hold that office anymore. Both were democrats and totally incompetant. Just look at the hundreds of school buses parked with water up to their rooftop and the failure to maintain order. Those were not failures by the federal government but the corrupt and incompetant governments of New Orleans and Louisiana.

you guys beat me to the Richard Doofus tag, plus

plus all the rest of the on the mark comments. So I'll just say:

Mega-dittos!

Matt Hooper

Time for Matt Hooper to shut up and go back to the mental institute.

Phony claim to support the troops

This is becoming a classic liberal tactic; claim to support the troops.  I notice Dreyfuss didn't provide a single example.

Have you volunteered for USO shows?  Gone to Walter Reed or a local Fisher House?  Donated money or held fund raisers for the families of fallen servicemen?  Go ahead and google "Richard Dreyfuss USO" or any other military related organization.  Nada.  Sorry Dick, to support the troops, you actually have to do something to support them.

As for being "tired of being called a traitor"--who has called you a traitor?  I must have missed that in Bush's last State of the Union speech or McCain's dust up with Madonna.  This is just another lame tactic of the left: present the old straw man that Dreyfuss has been wronged by an unnamed Republican.  And the reporter doesn't ask the follow up question, "I'm sorry.  But I wasn't aware that your patriotism had been called into question.  Who called you a traitor?"

Having gone through Katrina

Having gone through Katrina and the recovery in both Louisiana and Mississippi. You have to look a lot closer than Washington for the problem.

Having gone through the eye of Katrina and the worst of the storm the Mississippi coast, St Tammany parish, and St Bernard Parish are well ahead of New Orleans in recovery.

But hey. Dollar Bill Jefferson did clean out his freezer.

You might try looking at the mayor's office and that big white mansion in Baton Rouge near the state capitol.

What's the matter? You insult everyone, then whine because people bite back?

Limited Disclosure:  I used to belong to the Sierra Club untill they went crazier. Worse of all, I was bribed by Exxon with free New Orleans Saints glasses with fill ups in the 70's.

Dreyfuss has always been a good actor...

Dreyfuss has always been a good actor, but his comments about Katrina are lame. New Orleans is essentially unfixable. Moreover, as Sailer and others have pointed out, the planning required to prevent widespread looting, gangster activity, Democrat Congressman freezer cash withdrawals, Democrat Mayoral city chocolafication, school bus immersions, and countless other evils would have cost any governmental functionary his or her job. Stopping any of these activities would require extensive politically incorrect planning, which, of course, is unacceptable.

Money and plans for levee repair were addressed during the LBJ administration, but environmental interests took the Corps of Engineers to court and here we are. LBJ was a Democrat, wasn't he?

When Doofus cuts his

When Doofus cuts his "losing European respect" stinker, a half hearted cheer went up, but if you look at the crowd shot, nobody was cheering. If you ask me, I think it was the MSNBC employees, because the cheering definitely sounded like it was coming from the set, not from the crowd in the background.

When asked if he went to war with Iraq to derail the impeachment vote: “I don’t think any serious person would believe that any President would do such a thing." - President Clinton (Dec 1998).

anyone else notice...

..that the ONLY time a liberal cares about the government wasting or losing tons of money is when it's military spending and/or proposing tax cuts?

But, money being poured down the drain yearly on public schools?

 (insert crickets)

Btw, Richard Dryfuss is a lunatic when he starts talking about his politics. I've listened to him on the radio, on TV, etc and he becomes unhinged when he starts railing about BushHitlerCheneyEvilHalliburton etc. Literally unhinged.

Dreyfuss was on Cavuto

Dreyfuss was on Cavuto today and said he had no problem with higher taxes because ''after all, don't you want cops and firemen to live above the poverty line?''

Earth to Dreyfuss:

1) Cops and fireman make gobs of money (prob. 80k-100K minimum -- and good for them BTW) and are hardly near the poverty line.

2) Most of their salaries come from local property taxes, sales taxes and state funds - not Fed income taxes.

He also said that he wouldn't persoanlly mind paying more taxes. Who wants to bet that Dreyfuss has a tax accountant who is paid grandly to make sure that doesn't happen?

Cavuto looked like it wanted to reach down Dreyfuss' throat and pull out his tonsils.

Nothing prevents. . .

. . .Dreyfuss from paying more taxes.  Anybody (including Warren Buffett) may elect to overpay their taxes.  This is not prohibited and the 1040 used to have a box where you could designate the overpayment to go to national debt reduction.

I had a liberal friend who told me once that he thought we were undertaxed.  I asked him how much he voluntarily contributed over the burden and whether he took deductions.  He never used that line again.  Why doesn't the MSM ask the same question?

Exactly

Buffet and the rest take taxes break while complaining about not paying enough taxes.Simple solution as you have stated.

mr dreyfuss...why would you

mr dreyfuss...why would you care if someone calls you a traitor...means nothing,...that and two bucks will get them a subway ride ..i have my views and i am entitled to them and if they think i am a traitor, who cares,..zero they can do about it!!
