‘High Level’ MSNBC Source: Olbermann Tainting ‘Face of NBC News’

MSNBC's Election Night AnchormanA “high level source inside MSNBC” tells the TVNewser blog that network stars like Tim Russert and Chris Matthews are “upset” and “pissed” that the far-left Keith Olbermann is tainting the network’s credibility with his “activism,” such as blogging for the hard-left Daily Kos site.

“What’s it going to be like in the general election now that everyone knows we’re the in-house network of Barack Obama,” TVNewser’s Steve Krakauer quoted the MSNBC insider as fretting. The source suggested Olbermann was allowed to get away with his activism because the network fears the Countdown host would quit:

“They are convinced that he will walk. He behaves like a man who has nothing left to lose. He is not central to MSNBC, he is the center of the MSNBC ratings strategy. We hang the entire schedule on him."

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

A network spokesperson dismissed the complaint, telling TVNewser, "Your source is ill-informed and the assertions are laughable."

Excerpts from the June 3 posting, which went up before tonight’s primary coverage began:

Tonight may be the last of the primaries, but the discussion of the cable news coverage will no doubt continue for months to come. MSNBC has bore the brunt of much of the criticism, from a candidate, a competitor, and many voices in between. Now, TVNewser speaks with a high level source inside MSNBC, who sheds light on some of the inside rumblings.

"Every Tuesday night Keith is up there as the face of NBC News. That's a problem," says our source. "[Tim] Russert is upset about it. Russert has spent 20 years building credibility. All of a sudden he's taking questions from Keith Olbermann, the Daily Kos blogger?"

The insider says Olbermann's election night partner has reservations as well: "Chris Matthews is quite pissed about it. He knows a lot about politics and he takes it seriously. He's so close to it that he's not that political. He's not an activist — Keith's an activist. That's the difference."

Suspending excerpt: Okay, I'll concede that Matthews, unlike Olbermann, has a true political insider's grasp of politics, but it's absurd to claim that Matthews is "not that political." Back on February 12, when he admitted getting thrills up his leg from hearing Barack Obama speak, it was actually Olbermann who told Matthews to "steady."

Resuming excerpt:

With the primaries finished, the focus moves to the general election. "What's it going to be like in the general election now that everyone knows we're the in-house network of Barack Obama?" asked our insider.

"There's a huge difference between rooting for one side in a Democratic primary, and another one to take sides in a general election and go out and openly root for a candidate. You can't do that," said the insider. "You think Russert is going to put up with that? Election night coverage in November with Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann?

"The key is his willingness to quit," says our source about Olbermann. "And he means it. He has convinced management of that. They are convinced that he will walk. He behaves like a man who has nothing left to lose. He is not central to MSNBC, he is the center of the MSNBC ratings strategy. We hang the entire schedule on him."

TVNewser has also posted a response by NBC News Senior Vice President Phil Griffin, which you can find here.

"We hang the entire schedule on him."

Smart idea, to plan your future around the most unstable whack job on television. Simply brilliant...

Exactly

Far be it for them to hire someone that is stable and a ratings getter.

I really don't get it

I don't watch MSNBC because its awful and I don't find stories about of MSNBC of any interest. Don't they have like less than 100,000 viewers? Isn't MSNBC a non-story by definition?

Its more of a cult than a news source.

MSNBC is not looking for

MSNBC is not looking for great ratings. It's not even making a very good effort to be a liberal imitation of Fox News, as the people at Fox, despite any conservative leanings, are critical of leaders and politicians on every side.

No, MSNBC is nothing more than a megaphone to communicate with and support the chosen few, the elite that run the Democratic party. Olbermann is talking to you, me, or even the average Democrat. He's talking to the 100,000 who are running the show on that side of the aisle. And as such, I don't see him going anywhere.

Al Frankin redux?

MSNBC should review Al Frankin's relationship with Air America, and how Air America's "Blank check policy" helped lead it to financial ruin. Hanging your hat on one looney, unstable person is not a smart business deal. But, like all leftists, history only begins each day when you wake up, so it's likely to repeat itself. Good luck to ya, MSNBC -- you're going to need a lot of it.

I agree that he's fair in that he goes after both sides. Although he was clearly unfair to Clinton during the one debate when he hammered her. A little aggressiveness towards Obama was clearly needed to balance things.

But they're still crappy ratings.

I could easily make 'em go up, at low cost. Step by step:

1. Dump Olberloon for cause -- he's been nutty enough that they'd find something if they want.

2. Take 50% of his salary and hire a good looking female. Doesn't matter if her opinions are just as annoying as Keith's, the important question to ask would be "is she cute?"

3. Make her mostly just read the TelePrompTer, and tell her to keep her annoying opinions to a bare minimum.

4. Profit from the fact that no guys will want to look at O'Reilly anymore if there's a choice like that.

Kinda hard to believe that MSNBC would bet that kind of money on Olbermann. Yeah, he was a hit at ESPN, but that was with Dan Patrick and much different venue.

I think you're right that MSNBC needs to rethink their leadership at the top. Their advertising revenue can't be that good.

Perhaps they're simply happy with what little revenue they are getting, just for a place at the cable news "table" so to speak.

It'll be fun to see this all come to a head, probably after the election!

I just don't think he has

I just don't think he has any place on election coverage.  An opinion show - fine.  Whatever.  But, you shouldn't put an admitted partisan in front of your election shows.

"I don't think our troops ought to be used for what's called nation-building."
-George W. Bush, October 11, 2000

Exactly, curator. Let him

Exactly, curator. Let him rant and rave all you want on an opinion show, but you can't have him turn around suddenly and be Mr. Anchor. Doesn't work that way. I don't look at Olbie and think "Murrow, Cronkite...Olbermann." Too much of a ranter.

I just don't think he has

I just don't think he has any place on election coverage.  An opinion show - fine

But "Countdown" isn't an opinion show. It's a news show.

That's what Griffin and Olbermann insist it is (link). And they insist he doesn't allow his views to affect the show.

Since he's totally objective, what's to complain about him anchoring their election coverage?

More seriously, as noted above, MSNBC has centered it's entire network around him. If Olbermann walks, the network craters.

Olbermann has Griffin and the cable outlet by the short hairs. He knows it (I've heard that he believes he could have replaced Rather at CBS anchoring their news).

But as he's done at every place he's worked, Olbermann's ego and arrogance will be his undoing. It's only a matter of time.

Seems as though MSNBC has

Seems as though MSNBC has painted themselves behind the 8-ball (gotta love mixed metaphors). As you said, the network would likely crater if you got rid of Olbie right now. The only hope is for him to get more popular, then they branch off from that success, and have enough "branches" that they can cut down the tree. :-)

But "Countdown" isn't an

But "Countdown" isn't an opinion show. It's a news show.

That's what Griffin and Olbermann insist it

I don't view it as a news show.  I think their use of 'news show' is the loosest possible definition, if not an outright lie.

Though, I do see it as an answer to heavily slanted conservative opinion shows that have been on FOX for years.  But, definately NOT a news show.

(I've heard that he believes he could have replaced Rather at CBS anchoring their news).

CBS has done some stupid things, but I don't think they're THAT stupid.  Couric is just keeping Anderson Cooper's seat warm.

Olbermann is by far biggest

Olbermann is by far biggest tainter...but I would content he isn't the only one tainting the face of NBC news.

Chris Matthews, David Gregory, Andrea Mitchell, Today Show Hosts all have a part in it too

"They need to have a course in college called common sense and everyone should take it. Problem is there isn't too many people that could pass or teach it." -my grandfather

I think the taint of

I think the taint of Olbermann has enabled the liberalism of the other, supposedly more "mainstream" and "neutral" reporters and anchors to be more openly displayed - and still look more neutral - if only in comparison to Olbermann.

I have much more respect

I have much more respect for KO than I do Chrissy Matthews and Russert.  They all present  heavily-biased coverage...at least KO freely admits it.

"Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it." -Ronald Reagan

The executives acceded to

The executives acceded to making MSNBC the "Republicans-Are-Nazis" network, and now they are trapped.  Almost all of the MSM is in the tank for Obama, but Olbermann is the one who openly says the Republican Party is at least as big a threat as Al-Qaeda.

Their ratings will drop in half!

Goodbye Keith!

Viewership will drop from 12 to six.

MSNBC

I heard that feeling on Matthews leg turned out to be dribble, the aftermath of one of those times he gets so upset his face is red, he sputters, and he, uh, loses control of himself. If he has felt "that feeling" recently I hope the trigger was a look in the mirror. That this guy could be upset with Odorman if beyond belief.

Eventually we'll see Keith

Eventually we'll see Keith as a real life inmate on LOCKUP: SAN QUENTIN.

Think about this: We have

Think about this: We have Matthews ranting and raving about Obama to the point of sounding like a fainting heroine in a cheesy romance novel when he's not shouting down any opposition, we have Olbermann going nuclear about Bush and Cheney when he's not obsessing on O'Reilly, we have Dobbs screeching his phony populism nightly, and we have O'Reilly, who has inflated his anchorman job into a self-deluded position of "Protector of the Folks" - the know-it-all blowhard. I think Olbermann has always been nuts, but what's making the rest of them turn into such vainglorious whack jobs? It's cable news for Pete's sake!

This is a real problem

Finally, someone from GE actually watched an episode of countdown and realized that Olbermann is a rabid partisan hack.  So many people want to compare him to Bill O'Reilly, and that is just outrageous - Bill O'Reilly has spent a lifetime of doing investigative jounalism...his opinion not only carries more water, he also frequently goes after conservatives, and he's not afraid to have the other side of the argument presented.

It's very simple:  I call it the "Rolling Stone" test.  If you're not serious about covering the news, then don't get into the news business.

It is a privilege to be on television, being able to spew your own views, unchallenged!  People with intellectual integrity immediately realize just how unhinged this miscreant really is.

And that makes you wonder what kind of people are running most of our media outlets?

Given his history, Olby will no doubt meltdown and take an extended leave of absence. He will meltdown just like he did at ESPN in '90s, and just like he did in LA as a local sportscaster in the '80s.

The only question is when. My guess is soon after Obama loses the general election. Hopefully, he will do it on live tv.

Historic moment

Watching Olberman and Matthews about the historic moment of Obama simply being nominated is amazing. Matthew invoked some of Bishop Tutu's comments on this country. Tutu said when he first came to this country in 1972 he couldn't understand why the blacks were angry at their condition here. Matthews skipped around a lot but basically said Tutu came to understand...as he came to know our country better! Matthews understood that completely. His climatic point was that with the selection of Obama all that hatred, anger, and disappointment that blacks have toward this country can at last be a forgotten remnent of our racist past. I could spend an hour talking about what this great country has done not only for the descendants of slaves but the present-day progeny of countless thousands of African immigrants, including many fleeing Tutu's neck of the proverty- stricken bush! Not only does Tutu's new found attitude display ignorance and idiocy, but the idea that suddenly, magically Obama's nomination shall set us free angers me beyond description.

jaywl.....how dare he compare

the U.S. to South African apartheid.  GOD These people pi$$ me off.  Talk about reaching to make an arguement, bringing in Bishop Tutu??  Good lord, how can we EVER compare with South Africa??  Geeeezzz.........How could Tutu ever relate to the American Black experience?  Apples and Oranges.

"If a man does his best, what else is there"?

General George S. Patton Jr.

It can't get any better than this..

There is nothing more damaging to Tim Russert’s career and creditability than being grouped with Keith and Chris. Believe me, this is better than viewers not watching. The man has got to be in pain. Is this a great country or what?

Jack Welch

When Welch, as GE CEO, was in the NBC/MSNBC election Headquarters in 2000, reported that he was the only one in the room who did not vote for Gore.    Keith's problems are which candidate is his ideal, Lenin or Stalin and  which thump to suck on--probably the left.

Keith Olbermann is entirely

Keith Olbermann is entirely entitled to his opinions. And, being an eternal liberal, I obviously agree with many of his opinions.

That being said. He is **not** a journalist!! He has no business anchoring news coverage such as election returns and primary results. If MSNBC wants to give him his own show to share his opinions, they are within their right to do that. But I've watched him anchoring these primary results and he inevitably slides some comment in that makes his political views abundantly clear. He doesn't even try to hide it or apologize for it...He just does it. And that irritates the hell out of me because THAT IS NOT WHAT THE PEOPLE REPORTING NEWS ARE SUPPOSED TO DO!! Ugh...My journalism professor undoubtedly spins in her grave when he anchors news events.

MSNBC, give him an 8 hour show every day if you want...If you think it will boost your ratings. People will watch it...I would probably watch it. But don't put him in a position to deliver news...You should never ever be able to guess the political leanings of a person delivering the news. And it cheapens your network when you do it!

"He’s crazy"

General Electric must be taking some heat because of Olbermann and MSNBC's left-wing agenda. I'm certain I'm not the only one who has written GE and told them I would no longer use their products because of Olbermann's constant over-the-top hate-filled rants about President Bush. It will be interesting to see how long GE retains ownership. Perhaps Rupert Murdoch will purchase NBC/MSNBC down the road. Olbermann would be the first to go! When Murdoch was asked the question: “Would you hire Keith Olbermann?", Murdoch’s response was: “No, I fired him five years ago… He’s crazy.” ref: http://blogs.wsj.com...

"You're entitled to your own opinion, but not your own facts"

Sounds to me like the

Sounds to me like the Peacock Network is preparing to fire or force-out Olbermann.  Then all of the other NBC/MSNBC lefties can say, “See.  We got rid of the problem.  No more bias.”

My money is still on this

My money is still on this scenario: Keith Olbermann finally says something that is so out there and so offensive that they have no choice but to kick him to the curb. It'll be that whole Imus thing all over again.

Hauled off in a straitjacket

Hauled off in a straitjacket would suit me fine...

Keith Olbermann finally says something that is so out there and so offensive that they have no choice but to kick him to the curb.

And even that will be a win-win for them.  Olbermann will be a free speech martyr and MSNBC will get tons of publicity.

Russert is correct to be disturbed by his network's decision to keep this guy in the line up.  Olbermann is just this side of a circus act.

The bias is so pervasive

The bias is so pervasive that I am convinced they don't care.

headline Typo

Olberman Tainting, "Farce of NBC News"

Difference of Opinion is what makes a Horse Race

They just gotta wait till

They just gotta wait till Oralman has his mental breakdown then they can go back to loving Obama secretly (Well not Matthews)

BATH-TUB-BOY...

I have said this before, Olbermann is melting down much in the same way Rosie did on "The View". The only difference is that he is supposed to be more credible since he is a "journalist", or that he's supposed to be anyway.

BathTubBoy has shown a pattern of crashing & burning everywhere he has worked, ESPN, FoxSports, & even at MSNBC the 1st time around. He will crash & burn this time, it's just a matter of time. I just cannot wait to hear the stories about what a terror he is when he gets the sack at 30 Rock, he must have more ten a few folks at MSNBC who hate his guts, I want to hear those stories, about how his ego needs to be stroked, about how self centered he is, about his meltdowns about how everyone around him suck at their jobs, & about how he tries to get others fired. It's all coming, people. Just kick back & enjoy.

"...it's still We The People, Right?"  Megadeth

Isn't it bad enough that

Isn't it bad enough that Russert, Matthews and Williams are left?  Olberman is unnecessarily offensive.  ALL my televions in every single room have all NBC channels blocked.  I am not kidding.  When determining what kind of fridge to buy, GE was excluded from consideration.  They want to play their game all I can do is in my limited way play mine.

GENERAL ELECTRIC...

I'm with you on not buying GE, but I will watch their NFL(even with BathTubBoy doing studio work, I just mute the sound) coverage & I watch their NHL coverage. But their news division can kiss my @$$.

"...it's still We The People, Right?"  Megadeth

Star Power

Not a bad strategy, actually.

Look at Nickelodeon - they have hung their entire schedule on Spongebob, and they're doing quite well, thank you.

They should replace.....

Olberdork with Sponge Bob, there ratings would go through the roof!!  LOL

missing laugh track

“They are convinced that he will walk. He behaves like a man who has
nothing left to lose. He is not central to MSNBC, he is the center of
the MSNBC ratings strategy. We hang the entire schedule on him."

Is there a laugh track with that? They think Oberdipstick helps their ratings?

I've always thought that

I've always thought that Olbermann was a bit of a taint.

Hero, We know Olbermann has

Hero, We know Olbermann has tainted MSNBC. My question is why has MSNBC painted Olbermann?
All these pictures of Matthews and Olbermann in the MSNBC studio, and in every last one, their faces are pink - really pink. Which is appropriate, but nonetheless...

Or

Or this...
