One year ago, liberal journalists depicted the surge of U.S. troops to Iraq as a certain failure. “A lot of people are going to go to bed tonight terrified,” MSNBC’s Chris Matthews opined just minutes after President Bush announced the policy on January 10, 2007. Other journalists were only slightly more subtle. “Many experts warn, it’s too little, too late,” NBC’s Jim Miklaszewski argued on the January 8, 2007 Nightly News. The next morning on NBC’s Today, the network’s graphic describing Iraq was “Lost Cause?”
At the same time, leading Democrats left themselves no wiggle room as they, too, denounced the surge. Senator Barack Obama called it “wrong-headed” and countered with a proposal to pull nearly all U.S. troops out of Iraq by March 2008. Senator Hillary Clinton came back from a quick trip to Iraq to declare: “I am opposed to this escalation,” while another Democratic candidate, Senator Joe Biden, blasted the troop surge as “a tragic mistake.”
One year later, the President’s surge strategy is well on its way to succeeding. The Iraqi parliament has passed several laws meeting required political reconciliation benchmarks. Attacks in Baghdad have fallen up to 80 percent in the past twelve months, Reuters reported February 16. Deaths among Iraqi military forces and civilians have dropped by more than two-thirds, from more than 2,000 per month in early 2007 to fewer than 600 per month since November.
And U.S. military deaths have also declined, falling from 126 in May 2007 to 40 in January 2008 and just 29 so far in February, with two days left in the month. Yet this good news seems to have diminished the media elite’s interest in broadcasting any news from Iraq.
MRC intern Lyndsi Thomas helped tabulate all ABC, CBS and NBC evening news stories about Iraq since the beginning of 2007, just as the surge strategy was being implemented. After heavy coverage of the shift to a new Iraq policy in January and February 2007, the TV coverage began to closely track the rising and falling death rates for U.S. soldiers in Iraq. When the number of U.S. fatalities jumped in May, TV coverage jumped, too. When U.S. casualties began to steadily decline, TV coverage of Iraq dramatically decreased. (See chart.)
While the amount of coverage has shriveled, the tone remains more negative than positive. So far this month, the three evening newscasts have aired just 41 items on Iraq, most (23) just brief items read by the anchor. A mere seven stories were field reports from Iraq. Only ABC’s World News (February 13) noted the passage of key legislation by the Iraqi parliament, followed by a unique story the next evening on the success of the surge. The CBS Evening News and NBC Nightly News offered no such stories in February, but NBC did find time to report a visit to Iraq by actress Angelina Jolie.
Back in December, NBC’s Tim Russert conceded that the media were less interested in covering a successful U.S. mission in Iraq, telling anchor Brian Williams that “with the surge in Iraq and the level of American deaths declining, it is off the front pages.”
This is not neutral news judgment, but a great favor to anti-surge Democrats, since TV’s lack of interest in Iraq spares them the chore of defending their now-discredited opposition to the surge. Does anyone think the media would have let John McCain off the hook had the surge failed as spectacularly as it has succeeded?

Remember back to the US using embed reporters, when we had them reporting live from the battlefield we were winning every gun fight? We stopped the embeds and all of a sudden we aren't doing so well. That itself ought to make you think there might be an agenda here. The question real Americans have to ask themselves is, why? Why would reporters from America not want us to demolish terrorist where we find them? Terrorist would just as soon kill them as to look at them too, so what do the reporters benefit by us not killing as many terrorist as possible?

Many of us truly realize that there are a fair number of liberal, and not so liberal, democrats who do not automatically support the efforts of the Islamo-supremecists in this conflict, as there are plenty of democrats in congress who have voted consistently against surrendering outright.
I have a fair number of democrat friends who served in the military. Some of them were in combat zones in the first Gulf War, too.
I think sometimes some republicans lose sight of that.

There are many conservatives who have been consistently critical of the war in Iraq. Conservatives took the lead in blocking anti-terrorist iniatives sought by the Clinton administration in the mid-90's. Conservatives were also the most vocal opponents of our entry into World War II. But I would never suggest that these facts suggest that conservatives do not like fighting for their country.

Yet those three postings never generated one single reply.
-I once followed a thread on MediaMatters which contained scores of comments [I don't even recall the topic but I probably could locate it] and there were a multitude of contrarian comments--some extremely contentious--from a large number of conservatives. And they seemed to be regular members.
-I don't think either ideological side of the blogosphere has a lock on good behavior.

I am sure that you, as an officer in the military of 20+(?) years, are aware of the small standing armies maintained by this nation throughout most of its history. But there were millions [8 or 12 comes to mind--I'll need to check] under arms who fought (or were called upon to fight) during World War II, mostly conscripted and, I submit, majority Democratic. As I stated previously, the conservative wing of the Republican party was the most anti-war political faction in the U. S. prior to Pearl Harbor. It's also noteworthy that so many of the more contemporary conservative hawks--with respect to pundits and politicians--avoided service in Viet Nam, when compared with Democratic political leaders.
Again, I simply disagree with, and find offensive, the statement that Democrats, by their nature, don't want to fight for their country.

But that again brings us back to my statement and verifies it. Democrats veternas are more likely to be forced into service and are thus not as apt to serve voluntarily.
Therefore the statement of which you find offensive "that Democrats, by their nature, don't want to fight for their country" is in fact accurate since their participation is forced via conscription.
I might remind you that the military force pre-WWII was actually highly conservative Republican (Patton, Eisenhower, etc) and was not the isolationist wing of the party. I might also state that the Isolationists were not averse to war per se, they were in fact anti- european war in that they did not automatically aide with the Brits as we are apt to today in our society.
In regards to the Vietnam period, I am sure that you will find the bulk of the Vietnam Veterans who volunteered for service vice being drafted are conservative and most likely Republican in afiliation.
For todays military, I can assure you from personal experience that the number of GWB bumper stickers found on vehicles entering most miliatry posts far outweigh the number of Clinton, Gore, and Kerry bumperstickers put together.

--By the time I graduated from college in 1969, I knew of virtually no one who wanted to fight in Viet Nam...and most of my friends were Republicans.
--As far as pre-World War II military leaders, some were highly conservative (e.g. Patton and MacArthur) and some were not (e.g. Eisenhower and Marshall).
--I don't know if the political make-up of the Union forces in the Civil War is ascertainable, but there were huge numbers of northern Democrats who fought with the Federal armies.
--The fact that one may have been drafted doesn't ipso facto mean he is, by nature, opposed to fighting for his country.

It was just the other evening, the night before Bill Buckley’s passing was announced, and I had found myself entering a depression because I couldn’t answer a question. How is it that after 232 years of struggle, sacrifice and enterprise, triumph and tragedy, our fair and beautiful Republic has come face a choice for President between a couple of closet communists calling themselves Democrat on the one hand, and a doddering old fool on the other, who’s one claim to political fame is his so-called ability to reach across the aisle and make deals with the likes of the aforementioned Democrats?
Its all the worse as my father’s generation is coming to pass as well. Is this really what we want to come of the great legacy of the “Greatest Generation”? That many of them, like my father, are still with us to see how the fruits of their great sacrifice are being laid waste in a new wave populist naivety, demagoguery and imminent war, leaves me with a deep sense of shame. Shame on ourselves as a nation, a generation, and as individuals. And shame on me for sometimes thinking that the American people will wake up and do the right thing, and not doing more myself.

You have hit the nail on the head. Our founders were never looking for a handout. They came to these shores to make a new life for themselves without interference from government. The framers tried to form a document that reflected those goals - We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness... I sit here thinking of these words and begin to realize something interesting. We, as a country, are always "altering or abolishing" our government. What a brilliant stroke of genious by the framers. I also see a danger rising. With the advent of more government control, we will become less willing to "overthrow" our government every four years or so. Our society will become dominated by government control. I cannot imagine The Greatest Generation approving of what we are on the precipice of becoming. They fought for freedom of all people, and many of them sacrificed their lives to preserve just that. God bless them and God Bless America.

Someone (I'm sure one of our compatriots here knows who) once said, in effect, that our country would have problems once people realized they could vote themselves money from the treasury. FDR started the trend, and LBJ boosted it. Now, too many people think the government exists to satisfy their every want and whim. Demagoguery and populism are the natural fall-out from this. Maybe even the political naivete, too. All people want to know about a politician is, how much will he give ME.
It IS shameful. I hear people all the time expressing their "political opinion" that have absolutely no idea what they're talking about. They merely regurgitate what they've heard or read in the MSM. It's really an intellectual laziness. It may even be due to the SUCCESS of our country. People,by and large, don't have to worry about food, shelter, or health-care very much here anymore. So they can be nose-led by the one who promises them a bigger house, newer car, cheaper health-care, or whatever shiny bauble is the current "crisis-du-jour."
The politics of envy enter into it here, also. If "fill-in-your-favorite-successful-person" has a big house, nice cars, etc, why then YOU deserve one too! He MUST have got it by stealing or cheating, so YOU need "help" to even the playing-field. I know it was Reagan who said that the scariest words in the language are "I'm from the government, and I'm here to help." But most people, sadly, don't see it that way. "Uncle Sam" has been replaced by "Uncle Santa Clause."
I'm not much of a "doer," either. I try to stay reasonably informed, look at news through a cynical lens, and try to correct gross mis-information when I can. The only encouragement I can offer is, in 232 years I'm sure things have seemed bleaker for this country. We've weathered many a storm. This, too, shall pass.
