CNN's Gergen: Romney 'Very Dangerous' on Climate Change

CNN senior political analyst (and U.S. News & World Report editor-at-large) David Gergen scolded GOP candidate Mitt Romney on Monday’s Anderson Cooper 360 for daring to suggest that the health of the American economy is as important as fighting climate change. Gergen likened that to the "divisive" debate on race among Democratic candidates and called it a “very dangerous” argument for Republicans to make: “If Romney wins, and that becomes the message of the Republican Party, we are going to have two huge clashes in this country between needs on the economy vs. needs to deal with climate change. And it’s a very dangerous place for the Republican Party to go.”

Romney’s chief rival in today’s Michigan primary, Arizona Senator John McCain, has consistently pushed the liberal side of the climate change debate. In a speech in Kalamazoo yesterday, McCain sounded a lot like Al Gore: “I believe there's scientific evidence that drastic things are happening to our planet. If I'm wrong and we move ahead with green technology, the only downside is leaving a cleaner world for our children.”

Instead of scolding McCain for embracing a liberal position in a Republican primary, Gergen faulted Romney for not following suit. Because of his past service in the Reagan and Ford administrations, Gergen is often cast as the conservative counter-balance in roundtables; last night, for example, he appeared with reporter Candy Crowley and liberal CNN contributor Roland Martin. But with Gergen (who also worked for Bill Clinton) making liberal points, too, there’s no conservative to offer an alternative opinion.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Here’s the full exchange as it took place at about 10:18pm EST on CNN, beginning with Cooper’s question about what was likely to happen in today’s primary:

ANDERSON COOPER: David, John McCain won the Michigan primary back in 2000, largely by drawing the support from Democrats and independents. Does he have that same level of support this time?

DAVID GERGEN: He has a high level of support. He's very competitive. This is a primary that ought to favor Mitt Romney. You know, the rising concern about the economy is an issue that plays directly to Romney's major strength. And that is, he was-

COOPER: It's close in the polls, though, right now.

GERGEN: It's close in the polls, but Romney has got a -- if you look at all the polls, Romney has got a modest lead. And, by the way, Huckabee is a close third, too. So, it's bunched, but Romney slightly ahead.

But I have to tell you, here's one of the issues, a problem. Just as race is being very divisive on the Democratic side, Romney is going after McCain for putting higher CAFE standards, higher standards for gasoline usage on automobile companies and for going after climate change.

If Romney wins, and that becomes the message of the Republican Party, we are going to have two huge clashes in this country between needs on the economy vs. needs to deal with climate change. And it's a very dangerous place for the Republican Party to go.

Now it's "dangerous" to disagree with liberal orthodoxy?

Sorry, David, but you couldn't be more wrong.

Romney challenging the liberal AGW orthodoxy would be healthy, not only for our economy, but for our democracy.

Gergen

Gergen is an absolute hack. Everything he says is liberal conventional wisdom and CNN's attempt to portray him as a conservative or centrist is as dishonest as anything else those hacks do.

Gergen labels

I dislike it when pundits try to frame a complicated question by simply ignoring significant differences. Here, Gergen is effectively saying that Romney is against environmental regulation. If Romney wins, the Republicans should immediately be labeled the "anti-environment" party. That's simplistic, and crap.

It's obvious that since the Democrats are struggling with race and gender issues (where either/both could be disastrous for them), the media is trying to drum up similar controversies on the Republican side. I guess that's Gergen's idea of "fair and balanced." When the Democrats shoot themselves in the foot, the media shoots at the Republicans just to make it even.

It shows how far we have

It shows how far we have come, in that Gergen and the media used to be able to put him forward as a conservative voice on these discussion panels - and get away with it. Now, a lot of people are on to him. He probably still gets away with it with casual viewers, though.

A true statement:

"But with Gergen (who also worked for Bill Clinton) making liberal points, too, there’s no conservative to offer an alternative opinion."

Absolutely true and that is just the way CNN set it up and that's just the way they like it.

The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Alan Keyes '08.

Up yours David Gergen

This is why liberals should not be seen or heard as their brains are in perpetual fart mode belching out intestinal gas for thought.

Gergen is WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!!!!!!!!

I posted here on Newsbusters how to fix this. I wrote to the Boston Globe explaining how to fix this so they know and this is why I will repeat showing Gergen for the liberal fool he is.

Republicans are EXACTLY in the position on this issue to win and here is how.

The GOP in Congress with Bush DEMAND Congressional hearings into the WASTE and FRAUD in global warming funds dumped into research, media and univeristies and AL GORE.

That pressure will force FUNDING TO BE REDIRECTED in private (communist) foundation investments and government grants to instead of going to bogus university scams, but into A NEW FRONTIER........

The new frontier is underground shelters like the old fall out shelters WHICH RUSSIA IS BUILDING WITH US OIL MONEY PREPARING FOR A NUCLEAR WAR WITH AMERICA.

Wealthy people will get a 30,000 dollar tax deduction for building them and regular people will get grants from the multi billions being wasted.

THIS BUILDING PROGRAM will cause an economic surge of GOOD JOBS (no border busters allowed to scam the system). The appliances, food and construction will filter through to all segments of the economy causing a marked uptick and all those homes downgraded in value will be upgraded in having fallout or emergency shelters and regain their value.

This nationwide building project takes money being funneled into the elite few to now benefit the many. Solar panels for the shelters can be grid linked producing electricity lowering energy rates and homeowner costs and America will be a secure nation.
There will be no more FEMA talk as people will have a 30 day supply and shelter while government messes about doing nothing costing the taxpayer billions for strippers and other nonsense.

I beg Fred Thompson to get this and start talking about it as it will blossom the economy and is a very good quick bubble fix until my other programs are enacted for the long term good the American citizen.

David Gergen is a fool and if not a fool then he is a bald headed cartel shill liar which he is........this situation plays right into Republican hands for a massive victory in 2008.

Headlines: Al Gore spends 100 billion on commercials.................Fred Thompson says, "Give that 100 billion in grants to American homeowners to secure America".

Who do you think people will vote for.

As pleaded before..........are there not any economists in the GOP giving advice any more???????????

A Gerganistic Plan - CA to Remotely Control Home Thermostats

Four thousand years ago, men such as Gergen would have been priests who sacrified virgins to the gods when as a pallative for a drought or warm snap.  Today there are no virgins left, so the Gergens of the world want to sacrifice a coal fired power plant instead.

This "global warming" canard is an excuse for government to further regulate markets.  When markets are managed by government shortages can result.  In California plans are under way for the government to control home thermostatns

Down with climate change,

Down with climate change, up with America continuing to run.

The Rocky Mountain Collegian: Illustrating Idiocy

Problem Solvers

The left has never encountered a problem that they couldn't solve by more government regualtion and hire taxes. The doctrine is rooted in a deep belief that government can more equitably allocate resources than a free marketplace.

Congress recently passed an "energy build" that will not increase the supply of workable fuels, will ban the incandescent light bulb in favor of more expensive mercury laden flourescent bulbs and will impose mileage standards on an already reeling automobile industry.

Nothing in the bill will do anything to alleviate "climate change". But it sure sounds good to guys like Gergen.

As liberals get more desperate for power (that's all it is, folks), expect more threatening rhetoric from them (we gotta kill the deniers!, et al). The day's still young, as they say.

Mr Freeze

I am really concerned with the constant assertion of the AGW crowd that the ' worst that can happen' is blah blah blah if we give in the to this fictional theory.

Here's is the one 'worst thing can happen' scenario that noone talks about. A cap and trade system is in place for american manufacturing and engergy production. New Coal fired power plants are banned. Carbon taxes are demanded by Connie Mac for every home owner in the county, Gas Oil prices are taxed through the roof and then this happens.

It will be too expensive to heat our homes. produce food and persue just about any other economic activity.

Joe Kennedy will be on the televion blaming the evil Republican party for freezin old people to death because of their failed global warming policies. (with 'citgo' Chavez by his side)

McCain has a point

Broadly, he has a point. BUT...the devil is in the details. We all want to leave a better world for our children. How best to do that? I'm skeptical of the whole AGW mindset - there's just too many variables to be sure - the climate is FAR too dynamic to accurately model, how can we be sure? Can we take measures that have little economic impact? Absolutely. But we need to for-sure set down the science and figure out what gets the most bang for the buck. There are cheap things that will have great impact, but the more we do, the more expensive they are and the less return they give - the law of diminishing returns. There has to be a balance. That's what upsets me the most about the AGW crowd - they reject compromise by slighting any one or any data that may possibly refute their theory - and a theory it still is, despite how much they say the science is "settled". They can't even predict the weather YESTERDAY using the current models they tout. Once they can take the past and predict the present, then I'll have a little more faith in their predictions for the future.

McCain mush have flunked out of science

McCain obviously flunked out of his science classes. Oh wait he barely graduated - (Graduated 894th out of 899 in his class)

John McCain - McCain and Lieberman Push for New Anti-Global Warming Legislation (The National Center for Public Policy Research)
John McCain - Senators McCain and Lieberman Propose Energy Tax (The National Center for Public Policy Research)
Global Warming Bill Could Cost Every U.S. Man, Woman and Child Up to $494 Annually (Business & Media Institute)

I am so sick of people talking about "cleaner" and "greener". These morons obviously do not comprehend that the planet would not be green without carbon dioxide! Pollution has nothing to do with Global Warming! Because CO2 is not a pollutant!

"CO2 for different people has different attractions. After all, what is it? - it’s not a pollutant, it’s a product of every living creature’s breathing, it’s the product of all plant respiration, it is essential for plant life and photosynthesis, it’s a product of all industrial burning, it’s a product of driving – I mean, if you ever wanted a leverage point to control everything from exhalation to driving, this would be a dream. So it has a kind of fundamental attractiveness to bureaucratic mentality" - Richard S. Lindzen Ph.D. Professor of Meteorology MIT

The Kyoto Protocol is a treaty to regulate 'Greenhouse Gases' only:
- Carbon dioxide (CO2)
- Methane (CH4)
- Nitrous oxide (N2O) (Laughing Gas, Nitrous, NOS)
- Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)
- Perfluorocarbons (PFCs)
- Sulphur hexafluoride (SF6)

Car Exhaust consists of:
Harmless:
- Carbon dioxide (CO2)
- Nitrogen (N2)
- Water vapor (H2O)
Some Pollutants:
- Carbon monoxide (CO) *
- Hydrocarbons or Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) *
- Nitric oxide (NO) *
- Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) *
- Particulate matter (PM-10) *
- Sulfur dioxide (SO2) *

* Your car's catalytic converter removes about 95% of these pollutants.

Smog consists of:
- Ozone (O3) * (formed from the photochemical reaction of Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) + Hydrocarbons)
- Particulate matter (PM-10) *
- Sulfur dioxide (SO2) *

* Air Pollution is already regulated in the: 1970 Clean Air Act (Amended: 1977, 1990)
- Water Pollution is already regulated in the Federal Water Pollution Control Act (Amended: Clean Water Act of 1977, Water Quality Act of 1987)

137 'Developing Countries' are Exempt from Kyoto, including:
- Brazil
- China
- India

The Anti "Man-Made" Global Warming Resource

David Rodham Gergen

Remember when we had to pay this Clintonista jackass with our tax money to go on PBS and act as the Conservative "balance" to Mark Shields on McNeil/Lehrer?  The next time someone tries to claim that PBS is anything but a hyper-partisan, highly unnecessary tax drain, I'd remind them that they deem a Clinton hack worthy of serving as political balance to the network's socialist agenda.

I heard this pathetic excuse

I heard this pathetic excuse for a man last night, as usual he really ticked me off...he isn't worth the salt in a pickle jar.

"...he isn't worth the salt

"...he isn't worth the salt in a pickle jar."

But BT, if he was, wouldn't that make him David Gherkin? :)

Chris... LOL... I think

Chris...

LOL...

I think in my own silly way I was trying to infer that he is nothing more than a wrinkled up used lonely ol' pickle...he is absolutely useless as far as I am concerned.

I've been trying to work

I've been trying to work that in for a long time. I'll do anything to make a bad pun. Thanks for the opportunity. :)

Hey Chris... ROFL! I

Hey Chris...

ROFL!

I just read your PM!

I was afraid you'd move on

I was afraid you'd move on to bigger and better things. :)

Bring it on! Bring --- it --- on!!!!

Gergen: "If Romney wins, and that becomes the message of the Republican Party,
we are going to have two huge clashes in this country between needs on
the economy vs. needs to deal with climate change. And it's a very
dangerous place for the Republican Party to go."

That's
exactly
what we need, and what Gore is trying to avoid.
With AGW as a major Presidential issue, the pros and cons of the
theory get to be aired in candidate debates, and the public will get
the side of the story they've been denied all these years.

Everytime
the Dem comes up with some bogus half-truth, the Rep candidate can bash
it down. A guy like Gore would look like political pinata; the
preceived credibility of Hillary and Obama would be destroyed.
Remember, she never even read the excutive summary of the pre-OIF
National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq before she voted; she's not
likely to get beyond the bumper sticker slogans on AGW.

What McCain fails to

What McCain fails to understand is the enormous cost of buying into 'fixing' something supposedly caused by human beings. Why pay for something that is proving more unprovable as we learn more about the climate?
