On Sunday’s The Chris Matthews Show, the host used one of Mike Huckabee’s Iowa photo-ops as an excuse to launch into an elitist attack on Republicans and hunters. “Who made killing small animals the test of Republican manhood?” Matthews challenged at the top of his show. Over a clip of a vintage Looney Tunes cartoon, Matthews further upped the ante: “Who declared war on Bugs Bunny?!”
Later with his panel, an appalled Matthews noted how Huckabee “told a reporter that he loved to bag squirrels because he fried ’em up and ate ’em with biscuits and a Coca-Cola. What have we come to!”
Noticing how NBC News chief foreign correspondent Andrea Mitchell was squirming, Matthews asked her, “Are you upset by this Andrea? You must be!”
“Absolutely,” Mitchell confirmed, adding a unique sexist angle: “You don’t see any women out there with a gun.”
Opening the December 30 show, Matthews teased: “Gunplay! Who made killing small animals the test of Republican manhood? Who created the small game hunters test for the presidency? Who declared war on Bugs Bunny?”
After a segment on the leading Democratic contenders’ Iowa prospects, Matthews switched gears: “Before we break, Republican Mike Huckabee has shot to the top of the polls thanks to his Christian credentials, but this week he wanted to show Republicans there’s more to him than his faith, so he went pheasant hunting — and boy, was he proud.”
He then showed a clip of Huckabee, holding rifle and pointing to a row of dead pheasants on the ground: “These three birds all said the would not vote for me on caucus night. You see what happened to them.”
Matthews went on: “It used to be that candidates had to show they liked eating the local food — you know, the blintzes, the Coney Island hot dogs, the Philly cheese steaks. But nowadays they gotta like killing their supper!”
After reviewing how Mitt Romney claimed to be a lifelong “varmint hunter,” how Democrat John Kerry wore a goofy camouflage jacket on a 2004 hunting trip, and how then-gubernatorial candidate George W. Bush shot an endangered bird back in 1994, Matthews played the Bugs Bunny card: “So do Republican voters really believe that using a big gun to kill small varmints really makes someone more qualified to be President of the United States? It all reminds me of Bugs Bunny and good old Elmer Fudd.”
For viewers who might not get the reference, Matthews showed a clip of Elmer Fudd pointing his gun at Bugs: “Now I got you! You’re a dead wabbit!”
Matthews then turned to Newsweek’s Howard Fineman: “Howard, getting back to Huckabee, he told a reporter that he loved to bag squirrels because he fried ’em up and ate ’em with biscuits and a Coca-Cola. What have we come to! What's with the hardware and the gunplay here?”
Fineman cautiously replied, “Uh, limited regional appeal, I would say, on the biscuits. But I’ll tell you what, Huckabee is great at the iconography of politics and Republican campaigns. He really is.”
Matthews: “Fried squirrel?”
Fineman: “Fried squirrels and the crosses in the background — he’s doing great with his voters.”
Matthews to Andrea Mitchell: “Are you upset by this Andrea? You must be!”
Mitchell: “Absolutely. You don’t see any women out there with a gun.”
After another round of jokes about eating squirrel, Matthews ruefully ended the segment: “Somewhere out there a 13-year-old boy or girl is thinking, ‘If I’m going to become President, I’d better get myself a rifle.’”

And there are hundreds of thousands of 13-year old American boys (and girls, Andrea) who every day pick up rifles, thinking not of the Presidency, but of dinner, or defending themselves, or simple recreational amusement.
And I am sure those security guards you brushed past on your way into the studio are not packing water pistols.

December 31, 2007 - 20:01 ET by AJSHOPEIt shouldn't surprise me because it's a Turner network, but you have to have Boomerang or the Looney Tunes Golden Collections to watch them anymore. Thank goodness I have Volumes 1-4 (still need 5) otherwise I would never see the Looney Tunes because I don't have Boomerang.
Then they had to go and ruin the 3rd and 4th volumes by putting Whoopi Goldberg on at the beginning to explain how there are racial slurs, stereotypes, blah blah blah, and that these aren't for children. As the characters of the Looney Tunes would say "Ah phooey."
My wife and I have already said that the only thing our kids will watch are the Looney Tunes. No Barney, or other cartoons, just Looney Tunes. I mean we grew up on Looney Tunes and we are fine.

Sounds like southern cooking to me. In making red eye gravy (ham), I believe, Coca Cola is used as an ingredient. Now, not being a fried squirrel aficiando, I don't know whether red eye gravy is used...but the biscuits the Huck mentioned would seem to give me a clue. Either that, or he's going to drink the Coke....or maybe he prefers sweet tea.

Who made Chris Matthews a test of being a Puss
December 31, 2007 - 12:49 ET by Lame CherryWhat Chris Matthews IS IS a patrician from the east.
For a little history on these eastern patricians we can go back to the French and Indian War and the American Revolution. While Matthews and his English and Dutch patricians were sitting safe in New England to Virginia "not rocking the colonial boat", real Americans in the Scots, Germans and Irish in the Ohio Valley were having GENOCIDE PERFORMED ON THEM by Indians, French and English empires.
These same red state now blue state patricians can be found with glee saying Global Warming will kill off all the red states people as Newsbusters reported.
Chris Matthews is this ilk. For the record, George Washington ate squirrel, Daniel Boone ate Squirrel, Abe Lincoln ate Squirrel, Kit Carson ate squirrel, Buffalo Bill ate squirrel etc.... etc.... etc....
What Chris Matthews IS IS a bigot and should be fired for his patrician slams AS WHAT HE DID WAS THE SAME AS SAYING BARAK OBAMA EATS WATERMELON AND FRIED CHICKEN. That is what his liberal ilk just did. MSNBC SHOULD FIRE MATTHEWS.
For the record to patricians, squirrel is a spectacular meal. While they will eat eggs from bird nests and mine apparently love suet which is beef tallow, they eat mostly seeds rich in fats and their meat is is akin to antelope in being savory, sweet and not the least bit gamey. I do not like Huckabee, but he is correct in fried squirrel is wonderful.
I instead make mine as stewed. The last one I put into Brunswick Stew which was very good too.
What kind of sorry world do we live in when Matthews does not realize that cabbage bleeds sap when you kill it and it too does send out impulses or cries in death. This Vegan stupidity and patrician flat world nonsense of all things are not living when you are a liberal and buying them out of a deli is pure ignorance.
Too much preaching here to the masses..........but I certainly hope that young boys and girls are begging for Crossman and Red Ryder bb guns and target shooting with them for the day when Mom and Dad both take them out to harvest the bounty of nature which Conservatives created in our Game system of renewable resources.
Theodore Roosevelt showed time and again that the hunter was the training for the best soldiers in the world. Take to the field and forest, move through the hill and glenn, breathe in your souls the breath of life.........and breathe the Spirit God has waiting for you to Life in you.
I pity Chris Matthews as he is void and will never understand what it is to be a gentleman or a child of God.
God bless Chris Matthews to find Peace.

What wine do ya think would go good with that Chrissy?
It's funny far-leftist's like Matthew's and his ilk think that "only conservatives" like to hunt. But I'll tell ya' by golly here in central-Va. there are plenty liberal hunter's, African-American's especially.
It was a few close black ("gasp, he said "black") friend's of mine and their families through the year's by the way, who introduced me to some of the south's most haute' cuisine, concerning animal's of all sizes and genuses, and I'm sure they would take offense at Chrissy's little remark.
And may I say Blonde your mention of the red-eye gravy absolutely had my mouth watering, but I dont' know how well it would go with black olives. I was thinking maybe some feta cheese sprinkled on it, along with those olives.
Now I wonder what ol' Matthew's and Mitchell would think about some cow tongue, hog's head cheese or some turtle soup to round out the meal?

December 31, 2007 - 13:18 ET by USA4freedomSome 10 years ago when I was running a bar and restaurant. I was talking to a guy at the bar about grouse hunting. I had a great Brittany and I would hunt the northern Catskills. It’s hard hunting, if you bag one or maybe two a day you have had a day worth bragging about. Just about that time a woman seated three seats away starts to give me grief that I hunt and how could I kill defenseless animals, while she was eating a hamburger. After I told her that as a grown man I did not have to defend myself because it was a legal activity. But.. in this case I would, I started to tell her that that grouse had a hell of a lot more chance then that cow did that she was chomping downon. Then I went step by step how that hamburger got to her plate. I mean STEP BY STEP, leaving nothing out. She slammed her burger down and walked out, I yelled you forgot to pay your bill she shot me the finger. The whole bar roared.
The hypocrisy of the left is just unfathomable.

I can abide a true Vegan
December 31, 2007 - 13:47 ET by alamojbI can abide a true Vegan who is anti hunting. I will not agree with them, but at least I can respect them. But meat eaters that are anti-hunting I have a lot of problems with. Now I understand if someone who eats meat cannot bring themselves to kill, just as long as they do not try to stop others. I say this because every time I have killed a mammal or bird I felt a little bad, yet I eat meat all the time. So who am I to oppose hunters, as long as they eat the meat? I do not have as much sympathy for fish, though I do believe you ought to kill them before "cleaning" them. I always try to kill catfish with a hammer before skinning them.

• More than five million women enjoy shooting, according to the survey. That's up 50 percent since 2001.
• Among female target shooters, the number using air rifles grew by 55 percent between 2001 and 2005. Use of rifles grew by 53 percent during, use of handguns by 33 percent, and use of shotguns by 16 percent.
• Women ages 18 to 24 represent the fastest-growing group of female hunters and shooters, followed by those aged 35 to 44.

Did you ever stop to think that if all of the socialist programs weren't around to relieve these females of the responsiblity for their actions, there wouldn't be so much of that activity going on?
Certainly people have the right to reproduce. They also have the responsibility to take care of their own children as I did mine. If they can't assume their responsibility, then they don't need to be reproducing.

However, religious people and groups have an excellent record of caring for those in need. In fact, studies show that they give and do far more in that area than secular folks.
On the other hand, the government has a record of badly misusing our money, including in the areas you mention. Now, you would increase government's social responsibility? Again I ask: who pays for it...the tooth fairy?

December 31, 2007 - 20:12 ET by UnsaneActually, Syrius, your beloved social programs are NEVER used correctly. Most importantly, they create a culture of dependency. Don’t believe me? Go visit the Nanny States in Europe sometime.
Social Security would be much better off if we began a gradual program of privatization. I know that I will have a much better retirement than what Social Security can HOPE to provide, do to MY savings and initiative.
Ditto Medicare and Medicaid.
Transportation programs...mostly done in the name of national defense, a concept that Leftists are allergic to. (To ensure the Constitutionality of the Interstate highway program, all that is needed is to tie it to the post office. But I digress.) Let me remind you that the rails were built on private initiative; the rails were and are owned by private companies. (Of course, I’d rather see the federal government dump Amtrak...) Also, mass transit is a creature of city governments. Any federal dollars spent on such programs is, IMHO, pork spending that should be stopped, regardless of party. (But then, Leftists love to confuse what cities provide in the form of services with what the federal government can do.)

December 31, 2007 - 14:09 ET by BlondeYou're so-called fiscal conservatism vs. social conservatism has nothing to do with this. Although I find it interesting that a so-called fiscal conservative would immediately jump to a big government solution for a community-based problem.
Two words for you...personal responsibility.
The time for "choice", as I've posted here a thousand times before, is before one hops between the sheets. This little distinction applies to both men and women, BTW.
When I grew up, unwanted pregnancies ended up in a prolonged vacation, and an adoption.
Granted, there will always be instances of abuse and neglect, we have laws on the books to deal with that. The severing of parental rights at an earlier stage in the abuse/neglect cycle would mitigate a child living in foster care for an extended period of time.
There are plenty of private agencies who do an excellent job of working with these children and placing them. I used to work in the non-profit sector for many years, now as my community service I review grant applications locally. So, I still have my hand in. I'd most highly recommend volunteering locally, in whatever capacity, to have an impact on local issues. Whatever they may be. Rather than looking to Big Brother to fix what ails you.
<edit> BTW, I would much rather my tax dollars be used to support programs for American children in such unfortunate circumstances, than to pay for illegals' medical care, in-state tuition, incarceration, etc, etc. I just saw another poster here quote the figure $338B per year to support illegals...you think that might be enough to do something about abused/neglected/unwanted children here, by funding private programs rather than the big Nanny-state solution? We need to get our priorities straight, once and for all.

I think we
December 31, 2007 - 14:47 ET by motherbeltI think we
would all, Syrius included, be surprised at how many people would step
up to their responsibility if we didn't have the convenience of
abortion. Back in the day "having to get married" was an option. Guys
stepped up and married their pregnant girlfriends; some of them even
made their marriages work out. Now when a woman gets pregnant the guy
says "I'll help you get rid of it." And more women would rather kill their babies than give them up for adoption. Somehow, I can't come around to thinking that's a good thing.
But Syrius thinks that Joycelyn Elders had the right idea:
"Every child a planned and wanted child."
That would solve all our
problems. Let women abort babies they didn't want, and the there would
be no child abuse. Look at how well that has worked out. Child abuse
is nonexistent now, right?
Well put Blonde
December 31, 2007 - 15:37 ET by DEVILDOCMOMI could not agree more; when I was in high school a long, long , loooong time ago there was one girl pregnant in our senior class. Boy, would my view change....
Anyone who thinks the illegals don't use the "free" or "you and I pay of it" services is crazy.
What part of conservative do you not understand?
December 31, 2007 - 15:54 ET by KC MulvilleYou're starting the conversation too late. A true social conservative believes that if you don't want children, or can't support them, don't have the sex in the first place. It still amazes me that social liberals demand that government be responsible for the children of the unresponsible.
We'll do what we can, but if you think we owe anyone to fund their irresponsible sex life, get that out of your head immediately. And if you want to help out, you can start by teaching kids to be responsible, instead of whining about the lack of a huge, worthless, self-perpetuating bureaucracy.
Just for a start ...

Quite a change from her younger days when I would follow her up and down the hills and mountains of the Catskills. Its saddens me to see her get old. She was bad off a few weeks ago, the vet suggested I put her down but if she is not in pain then we will manage. I had to carry her outside for a few weeks but she has come back. Its good that she remembers some of her bird dog commands, like easy.. she slowes down when I can yell it lough enough so she does not run into things in the house.. Or come- a- round, she turns a 180 and goes in the other direction. Some people say you only get one great dog in a life time, I have had two, she is my second.

I think that some how through time, we have taken care of babies with out government programs, or killing them. Its called responsibility. When you have a child..you take care of said child, BECAUSE ITS YOUR CHILD. Not the government, or the butchers at the abortion clinic. It is sad to see that babies have to pay for with their life, that fact that being born is an inconvenience.. or a struggle, but that being said: (I see you made it safe)
So keeping with your thought we should kill every one in the inner city that cost us money? We have to pay to feed them,( food stamps) We have to help them with their housing, Section 8 housing. We have to pay for them NOT TO FIND WORK, unemployment. We pay for their health care.
And by theway I have been a foster care parent a few years ago, I put my money where my mouth is.. As well as a big brother as well as a scout leader, and soccer and softball and basketball coach.

Your entire strawman is
December 31, 2007 - 14:38 ET by Ruths husband BenYour entire strawman is false. Let me try:
"Would you be willing to feed and clothe all the unborn" - Yes, there are long lines of people waiting to adopt. I know several couples who have gone to China, Guatemala, etc. to find a baby to love. The prolife counselors in your neighborhood will gladly connect expectant mothers up with good families.
"all the unborn" - they are babies, not the living dead. Calling them unborn implies that they are less than human. I reject that and so would anyone who is honest. For example, each human being has unique DNA (except for identical twins, who share identical DNA). The "unborn" has DNA unique from thier mother. We (criminalists, paternal testing cliniques, etc.) identify people by their DNA, ergo the "unborn" is a human.
"through a big government program" - No need for a government program at all. All of the Body of Christ would be willing to step up to the plate here and have shown so over the years. Before FDR, it was the churches role to take care of those who were less fortunate than others. The Great Depression and the New Deal changed all that (because it is hard to feed someone when you are starving yourself). I am not hammering FDR, he did what had to be done at that time, it just should have had a sunset clause.
And yes, I would open my doors to them. Have in the past, will in the future. and I agree with my friends here, the real problem is the idea, prevalent in our society, that actions should have no consequences, when the reality is that actions always have consequences. That is the main problem with social liberals - their thought process is divorced from reality.
"What you say?" - I say yes. And I am not alone.

December 31, 2007 - 16:41 ET by timotheI never watch MSNBC or Chris Matthews because I get plenty of Liberalism reading AP stories. But in this case, I think you guys are getting your dander up over a relatively accurate observation.
Huckabee deserves criticism and mockery for doing a photo-op with a gun and dead animals. All blatant political ploys such as this deserve scorn.
It's like Huckabee is trying to say "Look at me!" "I'm just a normal conservative guy. See? I shoot things!!"
(You'll never see Fred Thompson doing that. Ever.)
And this comment by Matthews is particularly funny...
He then showed a clip of Huckabee, holding rifle and pointing to a row of dead pheasants on the ground: “These three birds all said the would not vote for me on caucus night. You see what happened to them.”
No doubt Matthews is a flaming Lib, but I wouldn't refer to the commentary as examined by Mr. Noyes above to be unfair liberal bias.
Also, Syrius is not the only "moderate" on this board concerning abortion. I consider abortion to be just a symptom of the overall moral decay that faces this nation. Until/unless we as a nation acknowledge the decay as a problem, there is little usefulness in fixing one of the symptoms.

As for Matthews, if he had left it at the "holding a rifle" (it was a shotgun, not a rifle, by the way) it would have been one thing, but he, typically, didn't know when to shut up and went overboard.
"Who made killing small animals the test of Republican manhood?" Republicans? Liberals have notoriously short memories, but remember Kerry? JFK? Many other Democrats? So, yeah, it was another hit piece, not just on Huckabee, but on the right in general.
