A Democratic presidential contender has hinted that he thinks some form of sex ed is appropriate for the nation's five-year olds.
I'm not exactly holding my breath for media outrage or at least interest in the topic, but I though Good Lt. at the "Jawa Report" has some good observations about how yet again, life seems to be imitating South Park:
Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., told Planned Parenthood Tuesday that sex education for kindergarteners, as long as it is "age-appropriate," is "the right thing to do."
The left, at the rate of almost several times per month now, is intent on mimicking South Park's proverbial "theater of the absurd" in real life and real time. The episode? Season 5's "Proper Condom Use," in which the school board decides that condom use has to be taught to progressively younger grades to the point that the kindergarteners are learning about it.

The liberals are literally becoming cartoonish parodies of themselves.

July 19, 2007 - 14:24 ET by Challenger GrimThe older I get, the more of South Park fan I become. I think you just figured out why Ken. It's funny because it's true.
The Hippie episode is still one of the best moments on television ever.
What's next? Russell Crowe's show "Fighting around the world"?

Answering my own posts
July 19, 2007 - 18:03 ET by balboa"Nobody's suggesting that kindergartners are going to be getting
information about sex in the way that we think about it,' Obama said.
'If they ask a teacher 'where do babies come from,' that providing
information that the fact is that it's not a stork is probably not an
unhealthy thing. Although again, that's going to be determined on a
case by case basis by local communities and local school boards.'"
In addition to local schools informing kindergarteners that babies
do not come from the stork, the state legislation Obama supported in
Illinois, which contained an "opt out" provision for parents, also
envisioned teaching kindergarteners about "inappropriate touching,"
according to Obama's presidential campaign. Despite Obama's support,
the legislation was not enacted."
Talking about inappropriate
July 19, 2007 - 18:35 ET by Ken ShepherdTalking about inappropriate touching is NOT sex ed.
And if that's what he meant, he's more gaffe prone than I thought.
You'd say, "Of course sex ed is not for kindergarteners. The only thing teachers should tell kids at that age is that no one, no parent, no teacher, no one, has the right to touch them on their private parts, and if someone does, they should tell a police man or a trusted adult."
If that's what he meant, he should have said it.
bal, I suspect you don't
July 19, 2007 - 22:32 ET by Blondebal,
I suspect you don't have kids....but if you did...would you want a stranger to teach them "sex ed"?
I don't think so. That's not something I'd ever want a kindergarten aged child to learn from a complete and total stranger....with the blessing of the state.
"Inapproprate touching" is something entirely outside of the realm of "sex ed".
That Obama would even comment on "sex ed" for children that young shows you how much of a Nanny Stater he really is. It's rude and disgusting and gross and none of his freaking business. Sheesh!

July 20, 2007 - 10:39 ET by dagdaI think it would be great if Roe v. Wade was completely overturned, leaving it to the states. Taxes were cut by 50% across the board and unions died a natural death or just withered on the vine as they seem to do now.
Our real problem, then, is not our strength today; it is rather the vital necessity of action today to ensure our strength tomorrow. Dwight Eisenhower

Question/advice for Balboa/Democrats
July 20, 2007 - 07:26 ET by sarcasmo"Although again, that's going to be determined on a case by case basis by local communities and local school boards."
So Bal, that may be what he says, but why does Obama discuss the specifics of the issue a Presidential candidate?!? And, come to think of it, why saddle the taxpayers with a Federal Department of Education at all? Balboa, lemme give you (& any Democrats who might be listening) a bit of strategic advice for this coming election. Americans outside the Washington DC beltway want to vote for someone who will keep the same freedom-promise Ronald Reagan made when he first got elected, which is to eliminate the Department of Education entirely and return that joyful job to the local communities and schools Obama's desperately-trying to sound like he's empowering as he ignores federal spending-waste, and any halfway wise Democrat could easily make that same promise various Rons running for President have made. (It has grown massively since, of course.) I'm still thrilled as hell about what the victory of this doctor over the Republican "professional" politician establishment says about what's now quickly-becoming my party, too. :)

Sarc, I do agree with you
July 20, 2007 - 09:49 ET by Challenger GrimSarc, I do agree with you it'd be so wonderful if we dumped about... 60% of the government departments out there.
Only problem is, I'm not sure that's possible, even if we invoked the blessing/help of St [Ron] Paul.
I think the only ways we could really get rid of some of the mess is:
1) Disenfranchise the Public Sector (except for soldiers obviously who have earned that right more than any of us).
2) Or just wait for the whole thing to crash from the coming demographic crisis and hopefully we'll be able to rebuild the thing leaner and better.

July 20, 2007 - 10:52 ET by sarcasmoI'm more with "between 80 & 90" than with 60, frankly. The Federal government's spending has probably grown by about 60% since Saint Bush of the Virginal Veto-Pen (yep, I get to do it, too!) took office, after all.
The coming inflationary crash due to Demopublican and Republicrat dishonesty with fiat money is what people like me really-worry about, actually. If it's not done in an orderly way, it'll be done just as history shows those who are ignoring it, the Weimar way...

Where the welfare state exists based upon the backs of the citizens. But enough citizens are NOT being born so the "weight" of the system is being supported by fewer and fewer backs and soon... the population will not be able to support it. (if you follow my metaphor)
It seems to be a law of the universe, the government can only get so large before it crashes.
Ironically there's one solution nobody's talked about with the welfare crisis is to ban contraceptives and aboritions and encourage people to have as many kids as they are able.

The welfare state we're
July 20, 2007 - 13:44 ET by sarcasmoThe welfare state we're discussing would not even be possible without fiat money. You are talking about it, but you may not know it yet. The constitution's restrictions on what is money were very important to our founders, who had already experienced the history Weimar Germany re-experienced after WW1.

Just another day in liberalism.
July 19, 2007 - 17:36 ET by NforceI get so sick and tired of liberals calling conservatives fascists. If this isn't an example of the dark fascist side of liberalism I don't know what is. "We know what is best for your child and we will teach the children the way we want them to think. You have no say in showing your own value system to your child." This is one reason they want to do away with home schooling, and ultimately, wish for the demise of private schooling.

July 19, 2007 - 18:02 ET by jdhawkAs amusing as it may be to liken the ridiculous notions of liberals to South Park epsiodes, one doesn't have to go far to realize that this was proposed under Clintoon and the irresponsible person that proposed it was fired. That person was the then Surgeon General Jocelyn Elders.
While Elders was proposing this bit of nonsense, her real claim to "fame" was virtually eliminating our capacity to product immunization products in this country. How did she do it? She proposed that the government take over immunization of children. While that sounds like a lofty goal. She reasoned that the "evil" drug companies that provided said immunizations were charging too much. So, the government set the price that they would buy immunization product from the drug companies. Of course, it was below the cost of manufacturing it. The upshot was that within a couple of years, US drug companies stopped manufacturing immunization product altogether.
Fast forward a couple of years and we have the Anthrax scare post 9/11. How does the government buy several hundred million doses of Anthrax immunization without a single US company in the business? We went to Europe and it cost us several times what it would have cost our own companies to make the product needed.
You won't see the above on South Park and it isn't funny.
