When I found out that the gyrocopter guy who landed on the Capitol lawn yesterday was protesting against obscene political campaign finances, my first thought was to wonder why he didn't land on Hillary Clinton's Chappaqua lawn. If ever there was an example of obscenely large and shadowy campaign finances, Hillary's political war chest would be ground zero. However, the lesson taken away from yesterday's incident by the Washington Post's Hunter Schwarz is that both the gyrocopter guy and Hillary have opposition to such financing in common. I kid you not!
"Hunter Schwarz covers the intersection of politics and pop culture for the Washington Post." That is how the Washington Post describes the author. But as we shall see a more apt descrition would be that he covers the instersection of politics and delusion. As proof I submit excerpts of Schwarz's own delusional piece titled What Hillary Clinton and the gyrocopter guy have in common:
Within a day of each other, a Florida man and a New York (/Arkansas/Illinois) woman took bold stances for campaign finance reform.
Hillary Rodham Clinton said Tuesday in Iowa that she would support a constitutional amendment to get "unaccountable money" out of politics. And Wednesday, 61-year-old Doug Hughes flew a gyrocopter through restricted airspace to the West Lawn of the Capitol to deliver 535 letters to members of Congress asking them to break their money "addiction."
Schwarz does admit that Hillary and Obama themselves raised huge amounts of campaign money but only because they were forced to in order to counter those nasty Republicans:
Indeed, Hughes's actual cause is something of a footnote in the gyrocopter saga, and Clinton will still be raising hundreds of millions of dollars herself and utilizing all the tools available, just as President Obama did, so as not to let Republicans have a leg up. Obama, in fact, became the first candidate to ever opt out of public financing in a general election in 2008, allowing him to raise greater sums of money from outside donors. And in 2012, he supported the creation of a super PAC while also promising to pursue an amendment to overturn the Supreme Court's 2010 Citizens United decision (something he hasn't yet pursued).
Schwarz delivers this final punch line by suggesting that Hillary is one with the gyrocopter guy in supporting campaign financing reform:
As the money pours into 2016 campaigns and super PACs, we can assume calls for change will get somewhat louder, but there's not much to suggest anyone's listening -- either to Clinton or the gyrocopter guy.
So while the gyrocopter guy sits in his jail cell, I wonder if he will be reading this article: Clinton Foundation to keep accepting donations from foreign governments.
As could be expected, Schwarz set himself up with an easy softball pitch for mockery by the readers:
I would rather see Hillary concentrate on preventing Secretaries of State from accepting foreign money into their private foundations in exchange for favors.
It looks like he left out the third event. The one where the Clinton Foundation, you know, the place where all the Clinton's work, decided taking money from foreign governments was A-OK. Even while one of them runs for office to get "unaccountable money" out of politics.
Hillary is talking the talk as she takes the very same money as she speaks, with plans to change the constitution after she gets her crown passed down to her.
