Networks Ignore OWS Comedy Gold

By P.J. Gladnick | October 22, 2011 | 20:15

A  A

Your humble correspondent will be watching Saturday Night Live this evening with great interest. Why? Because despite the Occupy Wall Street protests taking place at Zuccotti Park just blocks away from the studio for over a month, SNL has had only one indirect sketch on that situation despite the overwhelming comedy gold being offered up. Yes, last week SNL had a sketch about Mayor Michael Bloomberg reacting to the OWS protests but it was more of a dig at the mayor than anything else.

What makes this really strange is that OWS protests are constantly delivering up an hilarious comedy harvest whether it is the creepy "human echo" at the Occupy Atlanta Protest which kept Congressman John Lewis from speaking or trust fund baby Edward T. Hall III performing a Drama Queen denunciation of wealthy Wall Street yacht owners.

These inadvertent comedy videos are quite easy to find on YouTube such as this video (also seen below the fold) posted this morning by the appropriately self-named "f---edupchuck" whom, for reasons of delicacy, I shall refer to as "upchuck."

One positive thing to say about "upchuck" is that he has enough fashion sensibility to know that when you loudly curse out capitalism, a pair of designer Ray Ban Classic Aviator sunglasses, which sell for $139 at Neiman Marcus, is an obligatory eyewear accessory. Also note the many OWS souvenir vendors at Zuccotti Park, one of whom attempted to sell a $10 pin to upchuck. When you are done counting the number of new North Face parkas in that "anti-capitalist" crowd stand by for some incredible comedy gold at the 3:30 mark when upchuck delivers a command perfomance of his OWS dance.

So while SNL continues rehashing GOP Presidential Debate skits, the real comedy can be found on YouTube provided by many of the OWS protesters themselves. They may be ignored by the networks but to the folks online, the OWS protests are a treasure trove of YouTube comedy.

I have never been to New York -

Submitted by Ashrak on Sat, 10/22/2011 - 8:40pm.

partially because I don't have enough money to live there even for a day, much less get there.

So I suggest this for another to do, in my stead, as a result of my inability to be there personally.

In the mode of the syllable talking, I would like to see the crowd addressed, and of course witness it repeating, with the following -

Everyone reach,

into your pockets,

and take out,

every cent.

Place it all,

in the buckets,

being passed,

so that,

all the wealth,

that exists,

here in the park,

can be distributed,

equally among

everyone here.

I wonder what the hand gestures would be?

That an individual right exists requires that some policy positions be removed from the table of debate.

Priceless...

Submitted by Indie Dude on Sat, 10/22/2011 - 9:24pm.

I never knew we had this many stupid, uneducated people who don't take baths in America, they're Aliens from another planet. Also, notice the drum crew, the one guy was saying random Sh*t then asking poeple to donate money and he went right back to people power or whatever? What the hell? It looks like people are selling crap and basally being Capitalist themselves, which is the very thing they are protesting and despised.

This is a complete failure and a mess. It's like Comic Con without the super heroes in costumes. A Convention (excuse) to hang out.

You really need to get out more. The world, and the USSA, are full of morons like these.  After all, a majority of voters in the last presidential election voted for, Mmm, mmm, mmm! Barack Hussein Obama!

If that doesn't prove we're a majority moron nation, nothing does.

Protest the Protestors.

Submitted by Jefferson on Sat, 10/22/2011 - 10:04pm.

These people occupying Wall Street, and their supporters in Hollywood and the White House think we should arrest the bankers, maybe the bankers should make their point. They should get the CEO's of the three or four biggest banks in the country together and come out with a press statement on Sunday afternoon.

"Since a small minority of the citizens of the United States, in New York City, Hollywood and apparently in Washington, feel that we bankers are the ones messing up the country we're going to give everyone a break and shall not open our banks for business this coming week. All branches will remain closed and nothing but automated services will be done."

If they really want to make their point, announce they will be staying closed until the protests in those cities end. All the bank branches in NYC will stay closed until Zucotti Park has emptied out. All the bank branches in Atlanta will stay closed until the Occupy Protests there have ended. I'm betting the owners of shops near the protest will shut down and stop serving the OWS people, just so they'll go away.

Sort of ... Protest the Protestors.

Question

Submitted by Chaitealover on Sun, 10/23/2011 - 12:47am.

By "automated services" do you mean the bank's computer processing automatic payments to an account and updating of bank account information, or ATM machines being operational? Personally, I think the ATM machines should be shut down along with the bank branches. For that matter, they need to turn off credit card usage, too [for the OWS people that is, not you or me].

PJ, your comment about the $149 Ray-Bans reminded me of the photo of the OWS crowd I saw last week. I can't find the darn thing again, but the photo was full of arrows (with captions) pointing to the iPhones, laptops, cameras, audio equipment and designer duds and accessories sported by this "anti-capitalism" crowd.
I really wish I could find it and link to it; maybe someone else saved the link?

With government at every level hungry for revenue...

Submitted by drsamherman on Sun, 10/23/2011 - 6:27pm.

...why tax authorities not looking into the books of these organizations and groups is a valid question to pose in the next election.

The Occupy Austin and Occupy San Antonio movements are more or less fluid from day to day, depending on weather and whim. I don't know if the San Antonio movement is still together or not. Either way, I hope the state and local tax authorities are looking into their finances as a function of legitimate enforcement of tax laws. You can bet that won't happen at the federal level until well after the election, and by then the instigators will have fled back to Canada or left US jurisdiction.

Submitted by amyshulk on Sun, 10/23/2011 - 8:00pm.

The truly sad thing? Seeing the older people there. Tourists? Bought into the hype?

My mom told me a D she knows likes the electrified fence idea {she credited Perry - I told her no, it was Cain, and a joke} anyway, the D said "Great idea - a few crispy critters will deter the others from attempting to get over the fence"

The visual I got on that left me stunned - then again, I truly pitied gadaffy in his final moments - how terrified he must have been!!!

The government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.
