Bono Discovers Sustainable Development Isn’t Sustainable

The big problem with renewable energy is that it just doesn’t renew itself. The sun does not shine enough and the wind doesn’t blow enough to power the towns, cities, factories, hospitals and schools that make our lives so livable. No environmentalist would ever allow their child to be treated in a hospital fully powered by “renewables”. They would not take the risk that the wind might stop whilst their baby was on the operating table. They would insist that the hospital and the life support systems had a fossil fuel powered back-up.

And so it is with “sustainable development”. It just isn’t sustainable. At least it does not sustain a lifestyle that those who promote it would consider acceptable for themselves. But of course that is the key. Renewable energy and sustainable development are for “other people”. Even though environmentalists come from societies and very often families that became rich because of their use of non-renewable energy and unsustainable development they will not allow these opportunities to be extended to the poor in the developing world.

Environmentalists come from wealthy societies and families who cut down forests and burned coal and oil to make their families and societies healthy and prosperous. But, nowadays, for the poor in Africa and Asia and even middle America their path out of poverty must be “sustainable.” No fossil fuels or factories for them. But what this really means is sustainable poverty. It is a system that condemns people to a lifetime of drudgery and subsistence farming because modernity and industrialisation is “unsustainable.”

Which brings me to Bono, the lead singer of rock band U2 and more lately a campaigner for sustainable development in Africa, Asia and south America.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

In 2005 Bono and his wife Ali Hewson set up Edun a clothing range that was going to prove there is a different way to end poverty. It was going to be a non-corporate and of course “sustainable”.

At he time MSNBC said it would be “clothing with a conscience”. Vogue magazine said Edun was going to “flip capitalism on its head”.

But now it seems that Bono has now discovered that big companies with their big carbon footprints are useful if you want to keep paying the wages and produce the goods and sell them. Last week the rock star announced he has sold out to LVMH, the worlds largest luxury goods company. Announcing the deal Bono all but admitted that his touchy feely version of capitalism and development just didn’t work. Selling out to LVMH was a great deal, said Bono, and would “bring greater and longer-term stability to our manufacturers and the communities they support”.

In other words my Clooneyesc view of business is plain wrong and I now have to admit that I can’t pay the workers salaries without a proper business running the company. They, with their international marketing skills and economies of scale will make the business truly sustainable – that is – they will ensure that the workers have work and a salary every week and for years to come.

It is an admission that capitalism works and is the only way to ensure a better future for some of the world’s poorest people. And now Bono’s clothes with a conscience will be marketed and sold by a company that also sells Louis Vuitton, Donna Karan and Givenchy. LVMH’s also make and sell the delightfully unsustainable Moët & Chandon, Dom Pérignon and Veuve Clicquot. It also makes and sells parfum Christian Dior and Givenchy and luxury jewellery and watches such as TAG Heurer, Christian Dior and De Beers Diamond Jewellers.

Neither side felt it necessary to say how much Bono got for selling half the company to LVMH. Edun has, in the past, made much of the company’s transparency. However it seems that the transparency only extends to poking our noses into what the workers earn. Bono and his wife are exempt from such questions. But good luck to them. It is really not important to know how much money they have.

But it is important for them to stop keeping people in poverty in the name of sustainability. We used our resources – we burned coal and oil and chopped down our forests. We drove our cars and flew our planes. We have used capitalism to conquer disease and poverty and as a consequence our children are the best-educated and healthiest in history.

But it seems that now some of these children want to stop the poorest on the planet from having what we have. Bono loves sustainable development but only for other people. U2’s latest album was recorded in separate sessions in France, the UK, Morocco, the US and Dublin. The band is now going on a worldwide tour to promote it.

This is not “sustainable” but it is necessary to keep people in work and to keep Bono’s bank balance healthy. And this is a good thing. U2 will provide employment for hundreds if not thousands through selling the album and going on tour. But it is being done the old fashioned way – through unsustainable but wealth creating capitalism.

If it is good enough for Bono and his band of Irish multi-millionaires then it should be good enough for the poorest on the planet.

Phelim:

You've hit the nail on the head. All the "elites", even those with whom we agree on most issues, run the risk of demonstrating their hypocrisy when it comes to issues of the environment, energy, etc. For example, they'll be running to support Obama's cafe standards while they themselves jet around the country and ride in limos. I can hear O'Reilly now,"Get those lousy Arabs and those greedy oil companies--- By the way, what time is my jet scheduled to leave?"

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

My brother who lives in

My brother who lives in Japan is something of an individualist.  He tried a "sustainablity" experiment for a couple of months.  His experiment was to only consume goods and services with a 30 minute walk from his house.  This included foods and such that were made or grown within 30 minutes of the house.

So if they were shipped in they were out of bounds.  He was somewhat successful, but he said it darned hard to do.  The foodstuffs were very limited and that was the biggest part.  His wife and kids think he is off the wall .. and he is.

He is pretty much outside of the box.  He is currently building boats and his latest is a rowboat he intends to row around Japan.  He is very interesting.

Dan, Your bros' idea may work

Dan, Your bros' idea may work for an individual here and there, but when you have a population of any size trying to do the same thing you will quickly run out of resources.

Tell him good luck with the rowboat thing.

Reminds me

of the perpetual story when gas prices rise about mechanically inclined folks saving money by converting their cars to run on used kitchen oil and begging for same from restaurants and chicken joints (and how inventive they are). It may work for some and for a time but their aren't enough kitchens in the world to convert all vehicles and then someone will start charging money for the used grease.

"Somehow, I told you so, just doesn't quite say it." Will Smith in 'I, Robot.'

Re reminds me

Yep, that's a hilarious minor detail. One Wendy's would keep one or two vehicles running. And once the restaurants catch on to the fact that their waste product has value, they start asking for money for it.

Biodiesel Pirates!

Oh, it only gets better.  Now the police have to get involved.

Re: Bono article

Bono's attempt was noble and we should applaud attempts at innovation, not ridicule them.

That his work was trumpeted by the likes of MSNBC should not obscure the fact that he was trying something new and something worth trying.

Such knee-jerk reactionary critiques make us conservatives only look like, well, reactionary jerks.

And it shouldn't be "Clooneyesc" but rather "Clooney-esque" (with or without the hyphen).

You're right, Will.....

At least he tried.

He had good intentions.

Who cares if it worked or not???

Liberals...intention over results every time.

This is right up there with the elitists who think that the western world shouldn't bring electricity to African villages because they think it will spoil their "culture" which should, by all means, be "preserved."

Bono showed great respect for President Bush.

I believed him to be a leftist hatemonger, but my opinion of him changed.

I put him into that "true believer" category in which you find that guy who does "Save The Children".

Why not? He put forth the effort. Sure, you don't go overboard and throw him a parade, but he beats the guitarist from Aldo Nova (random reference) who just does blow.

But he tried!!

Well, old Lyndon Johnston tried to save the poor with his Great Society and here we are, 45 years and $40 billion later, still paying for it too, and the poverty rate is still the same. Wasted every single penny, but he tried.

More Sarcasm

Motherbelt,

So let me understand you here . Because something does not work out, the intentions are somehow suspect and ridiculous or just solely Liberal? So in turn only things that turn out positive have positive intentions and are Conservative. Wow! Now there's logic that's so logical even Spock couldn't understand it. And I'm going to assume that you've read the entire back story on the take over by LVHM. That's why you're so spot on with your assesment of the whole story. Smell the sarcasm?

→ Thanks Boh

I'm not all that big on Bono's music, but some of it was OK.

But Bono seems to be honest in his work for the poor.

"I was fighting a war in Iraq!" - Nancy Lugosi

Mister Boh....please point out where I

Please point out where I said (or even implied) that liberal intentions were  suspect, and where I even mentioned the word "conservative."

You're really reaching there, Mister, trying to read my mind.

So let me understand you here .

I would try to explain it to you, but if that's what you got from my comment, my time would be wasted.

To answer your question:  One thing is certain: I do smell something....

I didn't think it was physically possible, but this both sucks and blows.  -Bart Simpson

Back To You Motherbelt

Mother

I think if you tried to explain it you might expose yourself as speaking of something you knew nothing about. Please don't waste your time. I'll waste mine.

Your sarcasm was not lost in the translation. Your first three sentences are spoken as a Liberal defending Bono's actions. Am I correct in that assesment? Nevermind, I know I am. In doing so your intent was for the readers to infer your contempt for the previous post. Maybe not contempt, but you know what I mean.

Here's where I point out your suspicion of Liberal intentions. The fourth sentence (Liberals...intention over results everytime.). That wasn't too hard.

You're right. Conservative was never mentioned. But again if you are going to use sarcsm to bash one side the reader can only figure your meaning to be opposite. I was not implying you are a Conservative.

Next time say exactly what you mean and no one will have to read your mind.

BTW, love the Bart Simpson quote. No sarcasm there. I laughed outloud when I read it earlier.

I admit to sarcasm.  and

I admit to sarcasm.  and yes I  was poking at the previous comment. You know, like you were doing to mine.

Here's where I point out your suspicion of Liberal intentions. The
fourth sentence (Liberals...intention over results everytime.). That
wasn't too hard.

That makes no sense at all.

Saying that liberals value intentions over results means that I think their intentions are suspect???

You're reading way too much into it.  I meant just what I said; no hidden meaning.

Glad you like the tag line. ;-)

I didn't think it was physically possible, but this both sucks and blows.  -Bart Simpson

The South Park conservative speaks.

Bono is not full of poo, He is poo.

I will say here, now his intentions are suspect. How about that? Bono only cares about Bono and Bono's alter-ego Bono's image.

And yes, the original article was right. He was trying to reinvent the wheel. We know what works in business. We know what works to lift people out of poverty. It is not Bono. It is not leftists. It is not liberals and their misguided policies and programs.

Mr. McAleer is correct in his assessment. Mr. Antonin was wrong in that Bono needs to be ridiculed. Motherbelt was right that we need to do what works not what liberals intend to do but inevitably fail.

I won't stand idly by for an Obama lovefest nor will I abide a Bono lovefest. Bono is not full of poo, he is poo.

Bono and Bush and the MSM

It's is interesting (interestingly biased) that when Bono (a hated Christian type by the MSM) was working closely (later, often caught praising Bush) with President Bush on Bush' historic effort in the 3rd world, notably Africa to address the HIV/Aids (and Malaria) pandemic (which Pres. Clinton turned his back on for 8 years), the MSM had no use for Bono. They didn't like it either, when humanitarian Bob Geldof praised Bush's efforts (and trashed Bill Clinton), not when any other international leader, or president stood up and cheered Bush's effort in saving millions of lives. Something like.. 'Bush does the walk.. and Clinton talked, but f---ed everthing.'

Oh yea - don't we remember the lead-in on the nightly news, "tonite, President Bush is found to be for real, and Clinton is put in his place.." (someone slap me and wake me up!)

In October, 2008, at the President's Conference on International Development, as is often the case, praise for President Bush and his administration was in the air - for doing what? Doing the walk - not just the talk.

Sir Bob Geldof (Humanitarian activist - and Live 8 organizer):

".. a great adventure.. what America was born to do.. the sense that this is America at it's best..

"President Ellen Sirleaf Johnson, of Liberia (the first freely elected woman in Africa's history):

"Under the leadership of President Bush [..] .. What a legacy, Mr. President..." "..America's commitment to democracy and development and to supporting low-income countries around the world has been a signature of foreign policy achievement for President Bush, Secretary Rice, the bipartisan support of the U.S. Congress, and the American people .."

Other than Fox News playing a clip (I only caught it played one time), to the best of my observation, the rest of the national media went silent.

Bono is finally learning

Bono is finally learning what those who only have average careers learn in their 20s or so: ideals and reality differ by more than the desire to make it otherwise.

Now if only he'd talk publicly about what he's learned, perhaps more people would learn why capitalist-based charity is the most effective opponent of poverty known to human history.

"Beauty is only skin deep, but liberal's to the bone." - me

You Got It Backwards

Did you look into the MSNBC article or video? EDUN is a "For Profit" company. The manufacturers in their respective countries are making money with local workers in order to lift themselves out of the poverty they have lived in. That's the goal. It's not a Liberal charity throwing money at a problem at all. I think if you looked into Bono's stances on many issues you will find he is much less of a Liberal than you or anyone think.

President Bush's eco

President Bush's eco friendly home.  From 2001.  4,000 foot home and the opposite of bono or Algore for carbon foot print.

http://www.commondreams.org/views01/0429-03.htm

Geothermal heat pumps located in a central closet circulate water through pipes buried 300 feet deep in the ground where the temperature is a constant 67 degrees; the water heats the house in the winter and cools it in the summer. Systems such as the one in this "eco-friendly" dwelling use about 25% of the electricity that traditional heating and cooling systems utilize.

A 25,000-gallon underground cistern collects rainwater gathered from roof runs; wastewater from sinks, toilets and showers goes into underground purifying tanks and is also funneled into the cistern. The water from the cistern is used to irrigate the landscaping surrounding the four-bedroom home. Plants and flowers native to the high prairie area blend the structure into the surrounding ecosystem.

I Couldn't Disagree With You More On This One

 http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2009/may/14/edun-fashion-bono-louis-vuitton

Bono today sought to head off any such criticism: "Edun is a small brand with a loud voice. With LVMH, we can grow bigger and faster than we could on our own and bring greater and longer-term stability to our manufacturers and the communities they support."

LVMH's chairman Bernard Arnault added that the group shared Edun's vision and ethical values, saying: "Our group is proud to contribute to the operational development of Edun's activities, and of the local communities."

I don't see your point on this one Phelim. LVMH shares in the vision of EDUN and is working towards the same goal. It seems to be a mutual buyout of 50% + of the company. It does not seem as if EDUN was a failed venture at all. This is part of the growth process of the business that will lend to it's success. What your article does seem to do is show your willingness to spin the story to something it is not. The "sustainability" talked about by Bono is the communities of  an impoverished country and their willingingness to work to survive. Not like here in the US where people are paid by the government to not work. I think you are insulting the intelligence of the readers

You know, I really wish

You know, I really wish these self-righteous, elitists like Bone-head and Sting would just shut the Fu#@ up and sing!

Do they not see an ounce of hypocrisy in their lifestyles versus their constant lectures to us common folk? They decry capitalism, yet profit like bandits off of it! They decry our “carbon foot-prints”, yet jet all over the world with their entourages polluting like we never will!

Hey Bono, why don’t you put your money where your self-righteous mouth is and give up your wealth to pay these workers? I mean, if capitalism is “so bad”, why don’t you do the right thing and show us how it’s done and give of your own wealth to these hard working Africans? Oh, and please spare us with another one of your bogus “We Are The World Concerts” where all the profits go to you and your other egomaniacal entertainment friends!

It's You Who Don't Get It Sven

Bono gets the hypocrasy. That's why he does the charity work he does, and has done since 1984. Long before he was a mega-rich rock star. He has said it himself in countless interviews that he couldn't  see living the way he does without giving something back. That would be hypocritical. He also notes his futility of wanting to change the state of poverty in places like Africa. But he still does it. And I would bet dollars to donuts he has given more of his time and money than just about anybody you or I know. Or maybe he has nothing else better to do in between albums, right? You know nothing of his personal life and goals yet you are so willing to lump him in with the Liberal elites, mostly in the US, that actually do nothing for anyone but themselves, ie Al Gore.

He gives in front of cameras.

Oct. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Bono, the rock star and campaigner against Third World debt, is asking the Irish government to contribute more to Africa. At the same time, he's reducing tax payments that could help fund that aid.

After Ireland said it would scrap a break that lets musicians and artists avoid paying taxes on royalties, Bono and his U2 bandmates earlier this year moved their music publishing company to the Netherlands. The Dublin group, which Forbes estimates earned $110 million in 2005, will pay about 5 percent tax on their royalties, less than half the Irish rate.

``Among the wealthiest people I suppose it's the norm,'' Jill Cassidy, 23, said on South King Street near a plaque marking the site of Dublin's Dandelion market, where U2 played some of its earliest concerts. ``In U2's position, it does come across as quite hypocritical.''

I didn't realize Ireland qualified as a Third World Country.

I fail to see the connection between tax revolt and working to end poverty.

But we may have differing opinions as to what poverty is.

"I was fighting a war in Iraq!" - Nancy Lugosi

Bad Argument Seven

The money Bono makes for the work he produces should be his. Why should he pay more in taxes for the simple fact that he makes so much? Sounds like a government money grab if you ask me. That money has nothing to do with his clothing company or other charity work he does. Why do people think because he's a multi-millionaire (or billionaire) he can personally fund nations or communities out of poverty? If that's what you're advocating you should be reading the Huffington Post not News Busters. Because that's exactly what Obama means by distribution of wealth. My personal opinion is people hate Bono because he walks it like he talks it and they can't or think they shouldn't have to. I certainly don't agree with all his positions. But I respect him for being having the balls to stand by his convictions. Which makes him the opposite of a Liberal.

→ Boh

I'm not understanding this attack on Bono either.

"I was fighting a war in Iraq!" - Nancy Lugosi

I agree that the money Bono

I agree that the money Bono makes should be his.  Only his philosiphy is the government should do more.  He is for government except where it gets into his wallet.  He applaudes Bush for spending our money.  So moving to another country to aviod taxes his mother country can use is hypocracy .. or crass capitalism.

Re: Bono Article

You oversimplify and thus misunderstand my point.  No one here is talking about liberals' penchant for promoting "good intentions" over results.

That's a strawman that I've never put forward.

The point here is simple: as conservatives, we should applaud (1) private individuals taking the initiative to solve social ills, especially when they do so through business ventures, and (2) attempts to be innovative and do things in new ways.

When we snipe at others just to do it, we look mean-spirited and petty.  In doing so, we fall prey to the tired stereotype served up daily by the other side.

Re: Bono Article

Well said Will.

 Will, you neglected to

Will, you neglected to mention that Bono is a tax cheat. Why?

Re: Bono Article

Probably because my purpose is not to provide a full biography of Mr. Bono.

Rather, my concern is much more important: our battles must be chosen judiciously and they must adhere to true conservative principles.

Sniping at people simply because they're "celebrities" (I loathe the word...why "celebrate" any entertainer?) is NOT advancing conservative thought.  It's merely griping.

(And thanks, Mr. Boh.  Mighty kind of you to say!)

Bono hasn't done anything

Bono hasn't done anything illegal with HIS money. So how can he be a tax cheat? He is playing by the rules that are set up by his own government. In fact I would be willing to bet when the rules were set up it was to protect the very people setting those rules! Now a citizen has surpassesd those in power monitarily and they want thier fair share of his  hard earned money. Sounds like the Irish government is taking lessons from our Liberal leaders.

AAAHHHH!!!!

I just want to rip those stupid glasses off his face and stomp on them  Enough already.  That mysterious cool chic look has been dead now for over a decade.  Let it go, man.  While you're at it, tell "The Edge" to get a real name, OK? He's been on The Edge of my nerves with that name since I had the displeasure to discover your band existed.
