NBC Celebrates 'End of Traditional Marriage,' Perpetual Female Singlehood

By Paul Wilson | October 12, 2011 | 12:08

A  A

The mainstream media's campaign against traditional marriage sunk to new depths on NBC's October 11 "Today." Anchor Ann Curry teased a nearly seven-minute piece on the rapid increase of single women in society by touting "a new spin on romance, dating, and what some are calling the end of traditional marriage."

And that was just the opening.

NBC Correspondent Jenna Wolfe gushed: "A new report says more women are choosing to be single and loving every minute of it."

Translation: Men are not needed for a modern, educated woman to be happy and fulfilled. Get rid of the useless deadbeats.

Denigration of men was sprinkled throughout the segment. Wolfe quoted "author and single woman" Kate Bolick: "A major factor [in the rise of single women] is the rise of women in the workplace. As women have climbed ever higher, men have been falling behind. So instead of marrying down, women choose to be single and successful."

Translation: Chances are any guy you meet isn't as professionally successful as you. Why bother with the loser long-term?

NBC brought Bolick onto the show, where she argued: "Today marriage is an option, it's not a necessity, the way it once was."

Bolick wrote a piece in the Atlantic titled "All the Single Ladies," which detailed how more and more women were choosing to permanently remain single, because of the decrease in eligible men. Bolick's piece referenced another Atlantic article, titled "The End of Men," which chronicled the rise of women in society at the expense of men.

Beverly Hills therapist and author Sarah Brokaw (daughter of former NBC anchor Tom Brokaw) joined the parade of singlehood cheerleaders, saying "I have not been married, and I don't have kids, and I sit back and think: 'Well what have I really accomplished if I haven't reached those traditional milestones?' And the way that I look at being accomplished is to have a real sense of curiosity about life."

The Today report also quoted "successful screenwriter" Maria Maggenti, "single by choice," who touted the virtues of singlehood: "I'm single. I'm happy. My life is filled with love, and friends, and - and family, and - and good work that I love."

Is there a downside to this trend? Probably, but "Today" wasn't letting on. The piece included no dissenting opinions and, perhaps in the spirit of the piece, not one man appeared in the segment, either. It was essentially a feminist infomercial.

When interviewing Bolick and psychiatrist Dr. Janet Taylor, Curry did venture one tentative caveat to this glorious feminist vision, noting: "if this is really true then we're choosing it with a lot of emotional struggle." But Taylor immediately shot her down: "I think that's the old paradigm. I think more women are not choosing it with heavy emotional struggle. In fact, they're choosing it with emotional contentment."

"Today" approvingly quoted Bolick: "It's time to embrace new ideas about romance and family - and to acknowledge the end of 'traditional' marriage as society's highest ideal."

It's the brave new feminist world, where marriage is a matter of convenience, and men are irrelevant. Wolfe noted the decrease in the percentage of married men and women in society: "Research shows that marriage is declining in the United States: According to the Census Bureau in 2010, 50 percent of the adult population was single, compared to 33 percent of the adult population back in 1950."

Ann Curry joked at the end of the segment: "So George Clooney [who famously swore off marriage] was right."

At least, we think it was a joke.

So women who choose marriage

Submitted by LAM SON 719 on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 12:13pm.

So women who choose marriage are losers? I doubt most of these "educated professional" women probably aren't worth having.

Later Years

Submitted by BeanMan on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 3:31pm.

With the wide availability of abortion for these women and a successful career I can understand why they don't want marriage. Maybe they believe "Why buy the whole hog when all you want is a little sausage?"
Let's move forward to when they're 60 or so and there is no one who wants them anyway or to even provide that little bit of sausage they only seem to want. Who's going to love them then?
When they're 70, 75, 80, who's going to even know they're alive? Maybe this isn't why we have children however I know when I die there will be at least many dozen people (directly and indirectly related to me) who will at least know I was alive and a part of their life and maybe had some influence in their growth and hopefully helped them become a productive member of society and will miss me when I'm gone and point to me on the family tree and say "this was your great-grandfather and he was...."
This, to me, is preferable to dying alone an unloved except by your dog.

LOL, they come across as so arrogant, I doubt any man would have them anyway. Sounds to me they are looking for a reason NOT to look at themselves about their singleness.

with these babes. let'em stay single and swear off relationships and that way they wont mess up the life of some good guy, who, even if he walked on water without breaking surface tension, could not ever live up to their expectations. please girls, please stay single.
This bolick chick is a loser. her article ws posted on another site yesterday. she whines and moans, but there is nothing in the article to make one think she's willing to do some effort to make the relationship work.

From a female perspective...

Submitted by Radical1979 on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 12:47pm.

This is a disgusting piece of tripe. I realize matrimony isn't for everyone, but for these women to dismiss it out of hand shows how selfish the women's movement has made women. As human beings we should nurture and love one another, it only makes sense for men and women to come together to create families and take of one another. Men are not checkbooks!!!

Another way the MSM is devaluing the basic unit of our society, the family.

Well said.

Submitted by ant on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 2:31pm.

The 'Today' segment strangely mentions the word 'family' more than once. I wonder if they thought ahead as to what family a single woman might have in a generation if everyone 'liberates' themselves from the allegedly "tired, old traditions."
It's been said before, but the left still think they are smarter than anyone who has gone before, some 'traditions' exist because they have shown themselves to be the best and most productive ways to live.

I'm sorry, I should clarify, Hollywood persona is a different category. Much as I like the way Mel Gibson used to look, I wouldn't touch him with ten foot pole, and he is, I think, a conservative. As far as George Clooney, if I think I could put up with his politics. That man is aging very well.

Bug or key feature?

Considering the utterly ominous and dire longitudinal statistics chronicling the projected self-and-societal-destructive lifestyle trends of children -- especially young boys -- who grow up in households that do not have a male father-figure present, one might wonder whether these are simply misguided, self-deluded souls touting the "virtues" of single woman/motherhood or whether the creation of yet more generations of at-risk youth merely provides another convenient "crisis" by which to enact further and more far-reaching government "solutions" to this crisis-we-must-solve-now, now I tell you!!!

Shhhhhhhhhh you seem to be missing an important point

Submitted by antiObamunist on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 11:22pm.

The most beneficial factor about progressives support for abortion and forgoing marriage/children is their ultimate extinction as a result of their own policies and selfish actions. The overall US birth rate is at about 1.7, and with a self imposed rate of 1.1 or less on the progressive population may lead to a conservative ascendancy.

So let's concentrate on taking back our schools and let them self depopulate!

Insanity

Submitted by ljacone on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 4:30pm.

I love the arrogant insanity of the Left sometimes. Traditional marriage and family, concepts which date back for centuries and have been the building block of civilization, are now "outdated" to the Left in their infinite wisdom. Nevermind the mountains of evidence in support of marriage and family. No, your immediate gratification is paramount; all else is irrelevant.

Liberals call us "weak," but instant gratification is easy. Sexual promiscuity and sex with no strings attached is easy (assuming you can get some action). You need condoms? Go ask your teenage neice, she got some for free at school. You forget to take your pill and get pregnant? No problem, we have an abortion clinic ready for you. It's easy to make yourself happy.

You know what's hard? Marriage is HARD. Raising a family is HARD. Which is why Liberals shy away from it or despise it. Your immediate gratification is no longer paramount; by definition someone else must take priority.

You know the old saying that every generation thinks they are the ones who invented sex? The Left think that they are currently inventing civilization.

Twenty years of hard won happiness

Submitted by kata on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 4:47pm.

I couldn't be more pleased and content with my life. But I am not going to be an advocate for marriage. Personal experience has shown me that it's not for everyone. The Me generation pretty much trampled the We generation.

If this is what really works for these women (and men), more power to them.

I am sure that next week will be a program to explore the positive aspects of being married. :)

Just a sign of a broader problem

Submitted by StanO360 on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 6:21pm.

With the caveat that this is a generalization, this is a bigger problem. Schools and education from K-Grad school have been feminized. The work place has become feminized. Relationships feminized.

It's unclear what this means long term. Will there be less risk taking, there are already less men in college, and the education process is shaped against them from the beginning.

But in business women are very good at the daily processes, of getting things done. But how good are they at change and risk?

AVOIDING THE ISSUE

Submitted by redfish on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 9:59pm.

This is the conversation I've had with a lot of progressive folks:

Progressive: "Marriage is obsolete!"

Me: "Isn't it good if you have a child that you're married, to make sure the child has legal guardians that can make legal decisions for him, and the child has some guarantee of child support if the couple breaks up?"

Progressive: "I didn't think about that.... I wasn't thinking about children, at all... So, I guess the purpose of marriage is for children, then."

Me: "And in case the woman gets pregnant while in a relationship and decides not to abort, right?"

Progressive: "Yes, that makes sense."

Me: "That's what conservatives argue marriage is for when discussing gay marriage."

Progressive: "No, conservatives are still bigots. Gay couples can adopt."

Me: "Do you agree that Catholic adoption agencies that want to adopt to husbands and wives before they adopt to same-sex couples, whether those couples are gay or straight, should be allowed to do so?"

Progressive: "Yes, and they're non-profit organizations, so the law doesn't prevent that."

Me: "But children in orphanages are legally considered as 'wards of the state', having no family. Also, local government helps fund orphanages. Those adoption agencies would be excluded from that process, since the state can't legally deal with organizations that discriminate, and would have to go about of business."

Progressive: "Don't change the subject, conservatives are bigots."

Given that Federal Law gives

Submitted by jakee308 on Thu, 10/13/2011 - 7:46am.

women an advantage over an equally qualified male in many fields.
Given that women (due to mentoring and other programs aimed at improving girls self-esteem and gender oriented scholarship and affirmative action policies in college admissions.
And given that men have always historically been emotionally handicapped during elementary and high school, it's no wonder that women are doing so well compared to men these days.

They neglected to mention (of course that was the whole point) the other half of the equation; is it women who are not electing to get married or is it that no man is asking them?(at least not the men they unrealistically believe they deserve)

Statistics show that men have been declining marriage in larger and larger numbers than ever before.

It's no wonder, given that any marriage that results in divorce (it's women that initiate 80% of the divorce filings in the US BTW) and, if children are present, the man is forced to provide support regardless of his ability to pay (and is threatened with jail regardless of the circumstances behind his default
and in community property states, he'll also have half of his stuff taken away)
that men are leery of getting married.

Also, most women aren't prepared or willing to provide even minimal emotional support and/or nurture the children and demand that they be allowed to work outside the home so it's become a lose - lose situation with the loser being the man.

Although eventually the situation catches up with them as women find they are not able to support themselves (without government intervention and assistance) and their children even with the child support payments.

Added to all that the emotional damage inflicted (on purpose by the ex-wife) or by circumstance on the children it's a wonder that any man cares to put their entire life, or any children's lives) at risk for a minimum of 20 years.

Men are also not getting remarried for those very same reasons.

Face it girls (I'm speaking to the feminist/feminazi Media reporterettes now) you've got too much potential to make a man's life a living hell and too little to offer that mitigates any of the risk. WE DON'T NEED WOMEN anymore either. Especially since they believe that traditional women's roles are beneath them. Okay, fair enough. Now remind me again why I need a woman in my life by contractual agreement?

Women don't do home making anymore.
Women don't care about pleasing their partner, it's all about them.
Women compete for many of the same jobs men do.
Women complain about how men aren't what they think they should be.
Women for some reason believe that they know what a man should be.
Women have no problem filing false charges against a man and poisoning his children against him.
Women get special attention and opportunities from birth and throughout their lives that men do not get without grueling competition for it.

You've made your bed (or not) and now you can sleep in it (or not). I'm glad to see that they've been able to rationalize the complete mess that women have almost single handedly made of an institution that is a requirement for a civilization to flourish.

ATTA Girl! Nice work.
