CNN Pushes for Amtrak Funding with Senate Assistant Majority Leader's New Bill

So if a government program has been failing for decades, should you A) Privatize it, B) Get rid of it altogether, or C) Throw millions of dollars at it and hope that Americas somehow feel compelled to reenact scenes from "Some Like it Hot."

The answer is C if you were watching CNN this morning.

"American Morning" pointed out that high gas prices were the reason ridership on Amtrak was up 14 percent and then pushed for more funding for the government-sponsored program through a recent Senate proposal.

"The problem for Amtrak of course though is that they haven't had a single new passenger car since 1990," said personal finance editor Gerri Willis on the August 21 broadcast. "Their cars, even the locomotives are old and aging; they're asking Congress for help. Dick Durbin has introduced legislation into the Senate to try and do something about that. Interestingly he says that Thanksgiving is going to be a wake up call for Americans as we all try to go visit relatives for the holidays."

"What they need is new track, because every Sunday it's like this all the way up," said co-host John Roberts simulating a bumpy train ride with his anchor chair.

Co-host Kiran Chetry pointed out, "They need more track too. I mean not just the trains, because a lot of those routes. They need to be able to get more people moving."

The segment didn't include any opponents of government funding of Amtrak.

The "Train CARS Act," which was announced July 29 encourages train car production by authorizing Amtrak to issue up to $2.8 billion in bonds over four years to finance train car projects.

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., promoted the "Train CARS Act" August 21 at an Amtrak maintenance facility in Chicago, saying "The most cost-effective alternative in our part of the world is passenger rail," as reported in the Chicago Sun Times.

Durbin said he hopes the bill will encourage rail car production to occur in Illinois.

Era of passenger trains has passed

Passenger train service was gradually dying when Amtrak was created in 1971.  If it could be successful in this day and age, there'd never have been a "need" for Amtrak.  There'd be multiple providers and many more routes.  Amtrak leaves large parts of the country unserved.  From where I live it's 90 miles to the nearest station.  Nashville, a fairly large city, is not served.  South Dakota and Wyoming have absolutely no service.  And on and on and on.

Personally I hate to say it, but the days of passenger trains as basic transportation has passed.  The only exception may be along the East Coast where there are a lot of people and a lot of routes.  Elsewhere, it's just not practical. 

If I ever travel by train again, it'll be for nostalgia or perhaps one of those scenic routes on vacation.  But passenger trains will never be a part of my routine.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

Another Perk

Amtrak is nothing but a perk for Northeast Liberals who have to go back and forth from their jobs in DC to their NYC and Boston townhouses.

Some of my earliest

memories are of train rides. When my son was 2 we took him across Canada by train. We have taken various train rides since, down to see Grandma at Christmas (WA to CA), etc. Each time we have a "cabin" and have loved the trips.

Last summer my husband and I decided to take a trip from Tucson, AZ to Chicago, IL by Amtrak and drive from there around Canada, PA and back to Chicago for the train home. Again, we had the best accomodations they advertised. We may never take the train again. Of course, it was very late...that was ok, we had no deadlines, but the train was not clean and most of the people working on the train did not seem very happy or friendly. There were other problems, too. It is a shame, it WAS fun.

Durbin

The only reason Dick Durbin wants more funding for Amtrak is to increase the federal debt. Amtrak and public rail systems are being pushed hard all over the country including where I live. The libs are using the global warming hoax, which they created and the high gas prices, which they also created, to gain support for it. Amtrak and all government sponsored rail systems must be destroyed as it is nothing more than an instrument for the libs to increase state and federal debt.

However, I would support a bill that included funding for tracks that led every Amtrack train with Dick Durbin on board off the Grand Canyon :)

This is happening all over

This is happening all over the country.  dimocrat controlled cities are launching or have launched intra city rail transport encumbering their citizens with billions of dollars in debt.  Meanwhile, the bus system that it will supposedly take the place of is free of passengers.  Yes, that is what I said. The majority of the time the intra city buses throughout America run empty.  Nevertheless, they have been, are, and will be 100% funded, just like Amtrak.  And, I'll bet you that when the rail in your city is complete, the bus system will not be discarded, but run even emptier and cost even more tax dollars. 

Personal anecdote - my wife and I travel often from North Carolina to D.C. to see our son.  We decided to take Amtrak once.  Never again.  The trains were old, dirty, and smelly.  The food was worse then airline food.  The track was ramshackle often forcing the train to slow to a crawl or even stop.  And, apparently, no one from the engineer to the conductor carries a watch.  We were six and half hours late to our destination.  To top it off, I could have driven my car, even at today's prices, for about half the cost of the fare for both of us. 

Meanwhile, just like the intra city bus systems and soon to be launched in a city near you "light" rail systems, Amtrak has sucked billions of tax dollars out of us tax payers over the years.  It has NEVER run in the black. 

In other words, this bill is sure to pass!

I'm something of an old train nut. It used to be that trains were a very fun and relaxing way to travel, and economical. Now, it's become a nightmare.

If ridership is up 14%, and if it keeps rising, shouldn't that pay for all of these upgrades? I'm pretty sure if it were privatized, it would be run effeciently enough to make a profit, and be upgraded without the govt. throwing money at it. Then again, if it were profitable, someone other than govt. would be doing it.

   It would be waaaay cheaper for the government to just give everyone who wants to ride a train a plane ticket or pay for their gas to drive.

  Of course durbin wants rail subsidies.   Chicago is a major rail hub and greatly benefits from Amtrak.

um...

If more people start riding Amtrak, they'll get more income and be able to invest in better stuff. Isn't that kind of the point?

Accountability first

My biggest problem with boondoggles like Amtrak are their total lack of accountability.

Every single year, they issue million dollar demands to every state DOT that uses their services. Yet they will not disclose their budget. These demands increase every year.

This program, and many other federal programs (Fannie and Freddie, anyone?), needs to be audited so that every liability they have is documented. Until that happens, they need to be shut down and states should be able to deny them money.
