CBS’s ‘Early Show’ Links Foreclosures to West Nile Virus

How do you make the foreclosure crisis seem even scarier? Add in a potentially deadly virus.

CBS's "The Early Show," reported August 7 that a new stronger strain of the West Nile virus could spread across the country with help from the neglected pools found in foreclosed homes in California.

"Apparently ... as more and more homes are passing into foreclosure and there are many, and many of those homes have backdoor pools, these are being neglected," Dr. Alton Baron of Roosevelt Hospital Center told co-host Maggie Rodriguez. "They're not being maintained and this can become a ripe feeding ground and breeding ground for these mosquito populations."

Baron added that the new strain of the virus "invades the brain and spinal cord" and listed other horrific symptoms including nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, rashes, disorientation, severe muscle weakness, fatigue or even paralysis.

Mosquitoes, which breed in stagnant water, pass on West Nile to animals and humans when they feed off fowl that have the virus in their blood.

Foreclosures in the state of California may have hit a record high, but there are signs of a change-signs "The Early Show" ignored.

The Los Angeles Times reported July 23 that defaults, which rose by 39 percent in the first quarter, rose by only 6.6 percent in the second quarter, according to figures provided by DataQuick Information Systems. DataQuick President John Walsh said the lower increase could suggest the crisis is "nearing a plateau."

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said Aug. 5 there were 114 cases of West Nile in humans this year. Of those 114, two were fatal. The CDC also said that every year in the United States, about 36,000 people die from seasonal flu.

Oh, for God's sake, DRAIN

Oh, for God's sake, DRAIN THE POOLS!!!

Oh I heard this blather on

Oh I heard this blather on the msm weeks ago now...

I also cracked up with laughter....

Nothing like clawing desperation and the sky is falling for a BS story.....

Since I heard this about a month ago I haven't heard of anyone coming down with the West Nile by the experts and the crazy msm yet...who are breathlessly waiting for this to happen...hoping this will happen.

Btw...if you are so worried...just go be good wittle citizens of the msm in Ca. and go drain the pools...do something worthwhile with yourselves...pool your money, make an effort, be good stewards for Ca.

Well, on the plus side, they

Well, on the plus side, they didn't blame the increase in West Nile Virus on global warming. How about foreclosures?

Chris when I first heard

Chris when I first heard the story announced I thought for sure that was where they were going to go with it...good old global warming...

Guess it will just have to take second place now...give it time.

bt,It's always entertaining

bt,

It's always entertaining to watch them play Six Degrees of Bush Separation: Bush caused foreclosure crisis - Foreclosure crisis causes pools to go stagnant - stagnant pools cause West Nile Virus - Bush causes West Nile virus -- West Nile Virus kills people - Bush kills people.

If you lived in the area, you'd be a bit worried too

In my immediate neighborhood, we've had many birds and some people found to to WNV. My area is not in foreclosure crisis.

However, some of the communities surrounding the bay area ARE in serious foreclosure crisis, with lots of abandoned homes and un-maintained pools filled with stagnant water. There are many others not abandoned, but their owners can no longer afford to properly maintain their pools.

So yes, there really is a connection and a threat to human health.

However, in usual media hype style, they've over-simplified and sensationalized the problem, so the average dope-smoking fool with a 3rd grade reading level will blame George Bush for all these problems.

Why doesn't the City or

Why doesn't the City or County make sure all pools are drained.

...seems simple to me.

....they strangle all of us with enough permits for this or that...have them do something worthwhile and be useful for once in their louse-bound lives...they are usually too lazy to get off their big butts to do anything else except tax us to death, inspect this or that, charge us an arm or a leg for every single thing we do...

Hey BT

Here in San Diego, the city and county are both flying around in heli-choppers looking for 'green pools' which they subsequently send crews in to drain. When I first heard mention of green pools, I was a bit puzzled, but now I see the sense in it.

You're worried about POOLS?

I live in Minnesota, the lands of a million lake, ponds, and puddles, and you want me to worry about foreclosed homes and neglected POOLS? Get real! If WNV isn't rising to epidemic levels HERE, the home state of the Mosquito, why should I worry about it somewhere else?

BTW, ever hear of Mosquito control? Here’s an idea, throw a couple of FISH in those abandoned pools. You will reduce the Mosquito population considerably, and, in the process, be able to feed the (obese) poor people who you are so concerned about. Not only will they have access to a healthy food source, they won’t eat at McDonalds so often! It’s a win/win situation all around.

Floods led to more mosquitos

Just over the state line in Iowa we have an abundance of mostly small rivers, and many of them flooded at record levels this year.  One consequence is a bumper crop of mosquitos.  Between the rains and the floods, there was standing water in a multitude of puddles.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

Well, I'll tell ya what

Well, I'll tell ya what else is weird then...we have had the second if not the worst mosquito outbreak here where I live up by the border of Canada which we are also on the Id./Mt. border, we had the second if not even with first level of the most snow fall in ten or more years....so we figured it was from such a late melt-off, yet water underneath the snow packs ect that warmed early on for a brief time...whatever...nature does what it does, but we still have the worst mosquito infestation we have had since living here.

My point is we are in the mountains, not near standing water, or running water nearby our home.

Also Blame Greedy Home Loan Lenders For Frightening Recession

The lenders got themselves into this housing mess with their mortgage fraud. Let all these lenders, Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae go down and out of business and let's start fresh. They won’t even drain the pools!! If the lenders had not done the mortgage fraud to start with, and then had done the note modifications as required by their own rules, we wouldn't be in this mess! This story Blame Greedy Home Loan Lenders For Frightening Recession is just one of several that was published in Broowaha Reno by a writer calling herself Morgana out of Reno, NV.

In an adjustable rate mortgage or are upside down? Force your lender to play fair. Refer them to the rules they have to do a loan modification for you.

A way has already been here to get us out of this terrible housing collapse and frightening recession, but the home lenders aren’t willingly doing it.  Why?

Washoe County’s home values continue go down.  Same story for the state and nationwide.  Many homebuyers bought at the top of the market in summer and fall 2005.  When the housing market collapsed, their houses are now less than the mortgages on them.  Realtors continue to advise that we are in a continuing Buyer’s Market, with housing for sale/for rent inventory extraordinarily large.  The result is home values and rents continue to go down.  More than 26% of the inventory in the Northern Nevada MLS is bank-owned.  The pundits continue to predict Reno not to hit bottom until winter 2010 because buyers are convinced home values will continue to go down.  The American economy is in a recession.  Senator McCain blames home loan lenders

Realtors are not interested in taking any more listings for upside down properties as they are flooded with them and can no longer afford the costs to market them.

Due to the recession, Congress, the President and the Presidential candidates are all strongly favoring a freeze of several months on foreclosures, and a freeze of several years on upward interest rate adjustments.  Senator McCain said that the home lenders created the housing problem causing this recession.  He believes the lenders have to solve it, NOT the American government on the backs of American taxpayers.

Bankruptcy attorneys are getting court-ordered home loan modifications as it has increasingly become against public policy and unconscionable to throw people out of their homes because they are upside down.  Homeowners are upside downs solely because of the lenders previous greedy lending practices.  Many have accused the home loan lenders of pandering, Unclean Hands and being a threat to our American economic interests and security.

An immediate note modification gives homeowners time until the housing market recovers, the economy recovers, homeowners’ credit can start being repaired to its previous flawless condition, and would not add to the already bloated for sale/rent housing inventory. In 2005, HUD put forth its FHA Loss Mitigation Program gives lenders the authority and responsibility to assist homeowners who have fallen into financial difficulties with their home mortgages. Lenders have the option of offering borrowers a number of HUD/FHA approved options for avoiding foreclosure.”  On October 4, 2006, Fannie Mae issued their announcement to avoid foreclosures with loan modifications.  In May 2007, Freddie Mac issued similar loan modification mitigation requirements. There is the Emergency Home Ownership and Mortgage Equity Protection Act of 2007

The Feds, to boost the economy, have recently done several aggressive emergency fund rate cuts and have recently stated it will continue to cut interest rates. President Bush has blamed the collapse of the American economy on “too many houses were built.”  Home loan lenders financed those houses built.   President Bush, hundreds of politicians globally, dozens of reporters globally, and millions of people globally are loudly and correctly blaming home lenders, especially the nation’s largest home loan lender, Countrywide (just acquired by B of A).  President Bush, hundreds of politicians globally, dozens of reporters globally, and millions of people globally, all have publicly come out in support of permanent home loan forgiveness and permanent home loan interest rate reductions.  So why aren’t the lenders playing by the rules?!

It more than makes sense for the home lenders, and Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, quasi-government agencies under huge and increasing pressure from Congress and the public nationally and globally to take a small hit now instead of losing the full mortgage plus foreclosure costs and adding to the already bloated for sale inventory further driving down the home values and further destroying the American economy. There has been the following bi-partisan political support of home loan modification.

US President Bush

US Senator Obama, candidate for US President

US Senator Clinton, candidate for US President

US Senator McCain, candidate for US President

US Senator Reid, US Senate Majority leader

US Representative Peloski, US House leader
