'Early Show' Fuels Granite Countertop Radiation Fears

Just when you thought it was safe to cook in your kitchen, it turns out your kitchen might be cooking you. At least that is what CBS's "The Early Show" led viewers to believe on July 25.

Co-host Harry Smith warned viewers about what might be "lurking inside" granite countertops - radioactivity.

"There's granite all over the place in modern kitchens, sometimes you have a little breakfast nook. You sit there; you may sit there hours and hours and hours in a day ... I mean some people have gone so far as to tear their kitchen counters out because of the concern," said Smith to Stanley Liebert, the quality assurance director at CMT Laboratories.

Liebert said radon gas, a "carcinogen gas that we inhale [that] causes lung cancer," is emitted from certain types of granite and could be harmful.

Smith showed some skepticism saying, "I'm having a difficult time getting my head around the idea that the countertops in your home might literally be dangerous." But he didn't include any representatives of the industry in the story.

The New York Times covered the story July 24 and included industry comment from the Marble Institute of America, a trade group that represents the fabricators of granite.

The Times said allegations of radon and radiation in granite counter tops have been raised periodically over the past decade, "mostly by makers and distributors of competing countertop materials."

The Marble Institute of America told the Times the recent claims were "ludicrous" because although granite is known to "contain uranium and other radioactive materials like thorium and potassium, the amounts in countertops are not enough to pose a health threat."

Liebert was also quoted in the Times article saying, "It's not that all granite is dangerous, but I've seen a few that might heat up your Cheerios a little."

Countertops ARE Dangerous

and I have proof to show it.

We have a granite countertop at home. Everytime I read a story like the one cited here, I bang my head on the countertop in utter frustration. I have several nasty bruises on my forehead.

FORMICA - THE SAFE ALTERNATIVE

It pays to be retro.

Didn't the safety warning

Didn't the safety warning that came with your countertop; include, the warning to put a pillow between the countertop and your head?

It's those evil big countertop people. They worry more about the bottom line than your safety.

Liberals Can't Grasp Quantity

Guess what, there is background radiation almost everywhere. Those little watches that luminesce in the dark -- guess why.

Liberals can't grasp the notion of quantity. Too much water will cause death.

Exactly, Allan. Check this

Exactly, Allan.

Check this site out Dihydrogen Monoxide. Danger lurks everywhere!

background radiation

Cosmologists have been able to test various hypotheses emanating from the Big Bang hypothesis by measuring the background cosmic radiation.

This would seem to suggest that the Big Bang, which gave rise to existence, is a source of radiation.

Existence, then, must be dangerous to us and could lead to eventual death.

More fear mongering as is typical of the MSM

I saw a similar segment on FOX this morning, except their guest expert put it into context quickly and minimized the potential harm. Apparently there are two types of granite that are causing concern, both imported (one from Brazile and one from Namibia) that have higher than normal concentrations of Uranuim in them.

Once again CBS hypes while FOX reports. No wonder they hate them.

The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Alan Keyes '08.

Farmed Fish

Reminds me of the news story how farmed fish have higher amounts of mercury in them than fish raised in nature.  It turns out that you would have to eat like 10 tons of fish per week for it to harm you.

No wonder these limp wristed fear mongers are so quick to have faith in man made global warming.

not to mention chicken man burning

And if you eat at KFC you will be attacked by giant chickenmen who will skewer and burn you!

I borrowed a geiger counter

I borrowed a geiger counter from a relative to go over my entire house and found that our granite countertops was the only place higher than background radiation levels. But the levels were still so low it would take 100,000 years of me pressing my face into the granite to cause health worries.

100,000 years? Gee it'll

100,000 years? Gee it'll only take about 10,000 years for me to have to consider moving inland because of AGWing sea rise. (And I live on the coast.)

Harry Smith calls for closing of Yosimite National Park

Harry Smith calls for closing of Yosimite National Park; saying, "My goodness, look at this scene of the valley. We are completely surrounded by 3,000 ft walls of solid granite. And the valley floor is sitting on bedrock, made of what? Solid granite. And from above, solar radiation is bombarding these helpless thousands of little human visitors. They are literally being cooked to death - like they are in a nuclear reactor. Before today, I thought that the greatest risk to tourists here was from the rising temperatures being caused by man made global warming. Scientists are now convinced that it is the additional heat from global warming, that is causing the natural granite to emit it's dangerous radiation. At one degree cooler, the rock is safe."

This is GREAT NEWS

This is great news!!!

Why?  Because I need new counter tops and love the look of granite.  The price will now fall and I can get cheep counters.  lol

Oh, oh, oh, we should all short the stocks of the granite countertop makers too right?  Hmmm, one wonders if the bastages that made this report may have actually shorted some companies selling granite.

Hmmmm, and the economny is tanking and this will be another sign of it, falling stock prices for granite companies.  lol

If I hear one more person tell me how we are in a recession I am going to smack them.

Do these granites glow? If yes, think of the energy savings not needing lights in the kitchen at night...

Should I stop now?

you think...

you think you are saving money until the local government puts a tax on square footage of granite because it is hazardous.  It happened with grocery bags in San Fran and Seattle.

Paper Sacks

And my mayor elect in Portland, Or wants to bring it here too. What nonsense!

Seattle

we are soon to be "bagless in seattle".

The feckless liberals are proving the dangers of large government every day.  And yet, people in the area keep putting these high tax, huge government liberals in office!

Why did you move to Shanghai?  Seattle not quite marxist enough for you?

But don't worry Komrade, according to a liberal co-worker:

"Marxism doesn't exist anywhere anymore!"

WTF?

what a bunch of pansies

I am soooooooo sick of these Chicken Littles. America has become a nation of cowards and pocket picking socialists. At least it seems that way from what I hear day in and day out.

The Invisible

The Invisible Killer

Dihydrogen monoxide is colorless, odorless, tasteless, and
kills uncounted thousands of people every year. Most of these
deaths are caused by accidental inhalation of DHMO, but the dangers of
dihydrogen monoxide do not end there. Prolonged exposure to its solid
form causes severe tissue damage.
Symptoms of DHMO ingestion can include excessive sweating and
urination, and possibly a bloated feeling, nausea, vomiting and
body electrolyte imbalance. For those who have become dependent,
DHMO withdrawal means certain death.

If you believe the above, sign me up for the drive by media morning talk shows . . .

By the way, dihydrogen monoxide is water , H20!

Now, moving right along - about that cancer caused by cell phones . . .

DNC is happening in the mile high city, additional radiation

from space due to thinner atmosphere will impinge upon the tin foiled hatted BDSers..

Hiding under a granite counter top will reduce the inbound space particles, the foil hats won't help much.

Cell Phones

So... we have TWO media stories in a week about the cancer causing granite counter tops and cell phones... what happens if you use your cell phone while standing on a granite floor?

Will some sort of radio-magnetic radiation fill your whole body and make you an afraid to do anything liberal?

My new motto:

"If everyone believed everything the liberal media stated, we would never drive, never communicate with family, and never prepare food."

I think the recent tobacco story, (about it's cancer curative effects) prove Michael Crichton right, that these things go in waves... first it's bad for you, then it's good for you.

Now though they aren't even waiting for substantive evidence that it's bad for you, just telling us we should be "careful".

Just wonder what the panic

Just wonder what the panic will be like when they find out Spanish Tile Roofing and other types of clay roofing also let out radiation.

Harry ... don't eat

Harry, don't eat brazil nuts (radium), or bananas (potassium) or it will fry your brain ... in your case this warning appears to be too late!

Now...

You can't even take your kitchen coutnertop for granite!

Ugh. [groan] LOL

Ugh. [groan]

LOL

Granite is radioactive. So

Granite is radioactive. So I guess we need to relocate all of those people in the Rockie Mountian states and the Great Smoky Mountians. Lots of those folks on the left cost are gonna be really mad about all that radon gas over the years. Some body out there will sue Mother Earth if she dosen't clean up her act.

Save a SeAL, club a liberal!!

Quick! Evacuate south TX!!!

Hell, San Antonio and a good portion of south Texas should look as heavily populated as Times Beach, MO as a result of this "discovery"...

I have used granite countertops and love how little maintenance they require.  Am I eating the granite and thus ingesting uranium and radium?  No?  I guess they are safe then...

(Should I mention that the human body, according to some medical texts that I have perused, contains trace amounts of radium???)

Whoever casts a vote for Barack Obama is nothing more than a common thief.  Whoever fails to vote against him is nothing more than a moral coward.

Where is Smith Investing?

Didn't I hear recently that Harry SMith was investing heavily in Silestone? Hmmmm.. no reason to slam Granite....???

Radiation

I wonder how the radiation from granite compares the radiation from fluorescent lights that are going to save the world from Gorebal Warming???

AP: Senator Sick O. Libs has

AP: Senator Sick O. Libs has issued a further clarification to his statement regarding the State of Vermont:

"If I have offended the citizens of the Great State of Vermont by my comment regarding cordoning off of the state due to the presence of radioactive granitoid formations, I humbly offer my apologies. It has been pointed out to us that it is in fact, New Hampshire that should be locked down, not Vermont. As Senator and Chair of the Senate Dangerous Rocks Subcommittee, I have requested regional law enforcement authorities to remove the yellow 'Crime Scene' tape from all Federal highways entering Vermont, and move it to New Hampshire access roads.

I feel no need at this time to consult a spiritual advisor or geologist on this matter, but do not rule it out in the future if this is picked up by the MSM."

The Senator then promptly left the news conference and went directly to the nearest Gold's Gym to work out (gratis, without a membership).

laughing my head off

This story really has me laughing my head off. For over a decade, the "kitchen designers" have pushed granite counter-tops on us, as a way to up their income. Who in their right mind would want rock hard counters in their kitchen, which is full of highly breakable things!

If I knock a piece of Waterford over on my Formica counter-top (with wood underneath), at least it has a good chance of surviving. Knock Waterford over on Russian granite and you're out $150 for openers. Not to mention how hard the stuff is to maintain, which is even more interesting, huh. It's rock.

Huh?

Granite countertops, hard to maintain?  Not in my experience...

Whoever casts a vote for Barack Obama is nothing more than a common thief.  Whoever fails to vote against him is nothing more than a moral coward.

take a geiger counter to a brick house

and you will be shocked at the natural radioactivity coming from the brick.  amazingly, i have not heard of anyone dying from radiation exposure by living in a brick house.  this granite crap is the same thing.  while conservatives are tackling the difficult problems, liberals make up problems then sensationalize them.  oh yeah, hollywood sucks.

I understand the capital

I understand the capital building contains a lot of granite and marble. This might explain something

The ski is falling! The sky is falling!

Yet another dreary example of how liberals will snatch at anything as a means of scaring you, or luring you, or deceiving you into a situation all so that they can then control you, tax you, regulate you, and generally lord it over you.

I would be slightly impressed, however, if a liberal, any liberal – though Nancy Pelosi would be a particularly convincing specimen – stepped forward and claimed that it was on account of his/her granite counter tops that his /her brain became addled causing him/her to becoming a liberal.

At heart liberals are a lot like Chicken Little. I realize that this is insulting to Chicken Little, and injurious to his feelings, and insensitive of his sensitivities; but nevertheless I can steadfastly stand by this claim because my lawyers assure me that his lawyers simply do not have a case for suing me.

Sigh

Just because you CAN measure miniscule amts, does mean that we should.  There's something called a Maximum Tolerated Dose (MTD).  The level of emissions from granite falls into this category.  As well, it's good to remember that tests of putatively dangerous substances is confined to exposing lab mice to astoundingly high amounts of the stuff.  Mice are not little people.

FYI, dangerous substances in secondhand smoke boggle the mind.  At the very least 1,400 smokers contained in a 10m square room are required to reach a toxic does of one substance.  It goes up for each other 'dangerous' substance to as many as 400,000.  Is smoking an unhealthy habit?  Sure.  But only 4% of smokers get lung cancer.  Meanwhile taxes on those to take risk are a goldmine to local, state and Federal gummints.

The HealthScare industry disgusts me.  As well, I'm fed up with 'scientific' malpractice and the fact that science writers and editors appear to've dropped out of their science and math classes in 6th grade.
