What determines an economic crisis? Sweater sales.
ABC's "Good Morning America" began its broadcast October 17 with a report that might be confused with one of the signs of the Apocalypse. But have no fear, Bianna Golodryga clued in viewers to some red flags to see if the economy is in "crisis".
Video (0:57): Real (1.55 MB) and Windows (3.34 MB), or MP3 audio (442 kB).
"When you give or get practical gifts, stuff that you need instead of the stuff you want for your birthday or holiday. When sweater sales go up, watch out."
Even though Halloween hasn't even come yet, Golodryga warned, "Take note if a typically festive neighbor suddenly does away with holiday decorations this year. Odds are he's not out of town, just out of cash."
Oh, and don't forget to check and see if, "the biggest turkeys and Christmas trees stay unsold while smaller, cheaper trees go." That's another red flag.
"No problem getting a table at the fanciest restaurant in town?" According to the "Good Morning America" report that is another one of the red flags the economy might be taking a slide.
"The headlines are scary," admitted Golodryga. They sure are.

BTW, Bianna (if that's your real name), many of my crazy neighbors have had their stupid Halloween deco out since the end of August ... Hell, some still have last years Christmas lights on their houses!

October 17, 2007 - 10:57 ET by TruthMongerso what kind of signal is 3000 abortions every day?
or removal of all God references?
or demands for gay marriage?
"registration" of all "fundie Christians?"
mandatory Christian arm bands worn in public?
establishment of Christian ghettos?
voting rights removed from Christians?
legal limits set on number of children per family, gay marriage legalized, hetero marriage outlawed?
construction of giant camps surrounded with barb-wire fence?
Christians rounded up on trains and sent to these camps?
Giant furnace factories built next to these camps?

October 17, 2007 - 10:27 ET by MikeB"When sweater sales go up, watch out." Because autumn is upon us, which means the weather is cooling off, but it isn't cold enough for a new coat. Besides, wouldn't sweater sales going up be a good thing? It will certainly benefit those stores that sell sweaters. The increased demand for sweaters will also mean more jobs and more money for the people who make sweaters.
Perhaps the people buying the sweaters are doing it to cut down on their carbon emissions by setting their thermostats lower. This will result in less natural gas being burned, less heating oil being burned, and less coal being used to generate electricity. Isn't that what the AGW panic-mongers have been advocating all along?

Pelosi a hero
October 17, 2007 - 10:43 ET by Jerry MackFor some unknown reason I watched part of this show this morning. At the end of their "news" I turned it off. I can not remember the last time that I watched it. It will be a long time before I watch it again.
I now know one of the reasons why people that use this show as a primary news source think the economy is one job loss away from a recession.
They presented Nancy Pelosi as a hero for not bringing the Genocide bill to the floor for a vote. No mention as to which party wanted it to be voted on.
They are just preparing us
October 17, 2007 - 10:48 ET by buddycThey are just preparing us for the next depression. They are right but for the wrong reasons. After Hillary wins and passed the most massive tax increase in history, the economy will collapse but it will be democrat's fault. The public will vote her out of office in 2012 because of the depression and her inability to either solve it and/or shift the blame to Bush.
I'll judge the economy on
October 17, 2007 - 10:50 ET by ricklailI'll judge the economy on the day after Thanksgiving as to how hard it is to find a parking place at Wal Mart or the mall. Right now on a Saturday it is not easy to find a parking place at Wal Mart. If the military payday happens to fail on or near a weekend then forget it. That is soon to change. Wal Mart is building a new supercenter in Havelock adjacent to Cherry Point MCAS. So I judge the economy in this area to be pretty good-sweater sales or not.
PS The mall in New Bern is a dud. The only time it is packed in the day after Thanksgiving.

Sweaters only for
October 17, 2007 - 10:54 ET by fitzfongSweaters only for Christmas? Maybe when that inept, racist socialist Jimmy Carter was President. No decorations on the neighbor's house? Well, Sam Champion might be happy. Good Moron America is getting more and more desperate by the day.
If you remember 1991-1992
October 17, 2007 - 11:21 ET by mattmThis is the same thing. According to the media, we are "suffering" from the effects of a Republican administration, regardless of the fact that the economy is up from where the last Democratic administration left it.
We could have the best economy in 50 years and the MSM would portray it negatively --when a Repub's in the WH...
It really is the economy stupid, and only a stupid (or uninformed) person would entrust it to a Lib....

Mandatory Public Schooling
October 17, 2007 - 11:52 ET by deerjerkydaveI wouldn't worry too much over this tripe by ABC news except that the USA has mandatory public schooling. Too many public schooled dependant thinkers actually believe these types of reports. BTW I was public schooled, but somehow managed to remain a free thinker.
Coming from a family of 10 kids... 7brothers 2 sisters
October 17, 2007 - 12:58 ET by american-americanI can't tell you how many times I got sweaters, clothes, shoes, etc, for Christmas. This is not a new trend... sheesh. Grandparents especially like to give sweaters.
Even as an adult, unfortunately, I have received many sweaters for Christmas, which ended up in my antique dresser downstairs where I store all my unused sweaters... LOL... One day I plan to make them all into a beautiful quilt.
AA, that brings back some
October 17, 2007 - 13:08 ET by MikeBAA, that brings back some memories! My cousin John was, I think, the only kid in the extended family to get new clothes. When he outgrew them, they were handed down to my cousin Curtis. Then I got them, then my brother, then cousin Terry, then cousin Tommy. By that time, they were so worn that the Salvation Army didn't want them.

yep
October 17, 2007 - 13:25 ET by american-americanI wore alot of "retro" clothing passed down from my two sisters, who were 14 and 11 years older than me... Of course, today, those clothes are once again fashionable.
I was lucky. I had 3
October 17, 2007 - 14:41 ET by ricklailI was lucky. I had 3 sisters all youger than me. Though not older I was bigger than most of my cousins. I got mostly new stuff all the time. I outgrew it quickly so my cousins got it. My mom made the clothes for my sisters. They had to wear hand me downs.
I always heard that if you gave a girl a sweater for Christmas you would break up within 6 months. Only worked one time for me.

What's behind the recession talk
October 17, 2007 - 13:11 ET by nkviking75It's time to talk down the economy, or at least convince people that the economy stinks, so that people will keep Republicans out of the White House next year.

Sweater Sales
October 17, 2007 - 16:21 ET by cobolpoetCOBOL poet
Well, couldn't a jump in sweater sales mean that we all instinctively know that Global Cooling is about to start?
