Ouch!
This video of Russian ex-President (now Prime Minister) Vladimir Putin's response to a question about terrorism at a G-8 summit press conference was posted in early 2008. However, his answer is worth noting now in light of Barack Obama's rather dispassionate first response to the Nigerian Christmas Day bomb plot terrorist which came off as sounding like a tepid legalistic statement from a deputy district attorney. Here is a transcipt of the question from a French journalist and the blunt response from Putin which stunned the press conference to silence:
FRENCH JOURNALIST: ...Don't you think that by trying to eradicate terrorism in Chechnya you are going to eradicate the civilian population of Chechnya?
VLADIMIR PUTIN: If you want to become an Islamic fundamentalist and be circumcised, come to Moscow. We are multiconfessional. We have very good specialists. I can recommend one for the operation. He'll make sure nothing grows back.
Double ouch! And Putin wasn't joking as evidenced by his lack of even a hint of a smile and the deadly look of steel in his eyes. While we are busy Mirandizing terrorists such as the Nigerian underwear bomber, Putin has a whole different approach to terrorism. Call him the anti-Obama.
A few comments from the YouTube thread of this video:
Putin means Terrorism must be stopped at all cost. It cannot be negotiated with.
I love that awkward silence at the end.
Even the guy next to Putin was like 'Did he just say what I think he said?'
I don't agree with much of Putin's imperial attitude and policies but after watching this video, it is frightening to think how much he must dominate Obama in private negotiations. And what must Putin think about Americans reading Miranda rights to apprehended terrorists?
Oh, and has anybody out there spotted Lorena Bobbitt in Moscow lately?

Thu, 12/31/2009 - 04:02 ET by bse5150Isn't 'irradicate' supposed to be 'eradicate'? Or is the questioner asking if Putin is trying to get to the root of terrorism in the population there?
Nothing in Putin's
Thu, 12/31/2009 - 05:32 ET by MidAmericaNothing in Putin's policies indicate he is a communist. True communism would divide authority into small bits like its name implies. There is no authority given to communes and committee in either Putin's government or in fact, the old Soviet Union. The 'communist' fascination that the Western leftists had with the Soviet Union was a romantic fantasy that fulfilled their need for a communal utopia. The real Soviet Union was a brutal dictatorship led by a ruling clique. The old Russian leadership had more in common with Julius Ceasar than any governance by the proletariat.
But unlike us in the West, Putin lives in a very stark world of reality. He can see what the future holds for all of us if forceful steps are not taken, worldwide sharia law. Europe is already committing suicide by encouraging immigration of Muslim populations and introducing laws to let Muslims have a seperate culture within the host country. The greatest threat to the West is not from random violence by radical Islamists. It's actually from the exploitation of the Wests greatest weakness: one person, one vote. It's only a matter of time that Europe will become a Muslim continent.
If the self-lothing white liberals of the West are not stopped soon in their drive to erradicate Western culture we will all be faced with the question of do we allow ourselves to be surrounded and overwhelmed and sent back to a 5th century existence or do we give up our true democracy for an authoritarian rule by a Putin of our own?
One Person, One Vote
Thu, 12/31/2009 - 12:46 ET by Kingfish17My understanding about most European countries is that, when they allow immagration, it's under the stipulation that the immagrants or their children do not become citizens. No citizenship, no vote. I agree that Europe is on the slope to eventual Islamification of their culture, but it will probably be more revolutionary then just by through the ballot box.
Am I off-base regarding my understanding, MidAmerica?
There is only one goddess Gaia and Al Gore is her prophet.
I'm not really sure of
Thu, 12/31/2009 - 17:36 ET by MidAmericaI'm not really sure of all the nuances in European voting laws but even if a rising immigrant population is denied equal voting status that is a situation that cannot last. The radical version of Islam and Western democracy are incompatible. Put them in the same country and only one will ultimately survive. If Western democracies fall the whole world will look like Afghanistan under the control of the Taliban. When that happens only a ruthless leader like Putin will be able to fight off the barbarians. The countrysides will be controlled by thieves, murderers and war lords, all reminiscent of the Mad Max movies that portray the decline of civilization and descent into chaos.
We should remember that in order to save the union, Lincoln hit the 'pause' button on many aspects of the constitution. If the Western leaders continue to close their eyes to a very real and building threat a future President may be forced to do the same to save the country.
Barack Obama can't even secure his own house
Thu, 12/31/2009 - 06:13 ET by Retired GeekBarack Obama holds the most powerful position in the World, with the best trained Soldiers in the World, using the very best technology and weapons.
Barack Obama not only has access to the best surveillance equipment in the World - Obama is the Commander in Chief for crying out loud.
Barack Obama recently had two separate infiltrations into his own house - the White House.
These infiltrations could just as easily been those dedicated to destroying Obama's life and his wife and his children, instead of just being harmless party crashers or people who arrived a day early.
Now Barack Obama wants us to trust him to secure the entire Country and Transportation system etc.
Barack Obama can't even guard his own life, his own families lives, his own house, the lives of his staff and guests.

You're missing the point of the story
Thu, 12/31/2009 - 07:57 ET by CO2MakerThe point isn't that Putin (i.e., Russia) will be tough with terrorists. We know they will, and others know we can be, too, if we want to. (Why did Putin just say two days ago they need to develop weapons so the U.S. can't "do whatever it wants" in the world?) No, no. That's not the point of the story.
The point is: He made that politely disguised but unmistakable statement to an auditorium of listeners and then didn't give any indication he was being "arch" or "ironic" or clever. He meant it and he didn't care if the reporter cared. "We invite them to come to Moscow and get it cut off down to the nub, plain and simple. What are you looking at like that?"

Thu, 12/31/2009 - 09:25 ET by jdripperIn the 1980s the PLO and Hezbollah were kidnapping Westerners in Lebanon. One day they snatched a bus full of Russian employees at their embassy, and made their demands.
The KGB sent a special "dispatch team" (that is what they were called back then). The promptly rounded up 25 members of the PLO and Hezbollah castrated them, forced the genitalia into their mouths and beheaded them. The heads were sent to the PLO headquarters.
The next morning the hostages were returned unharmed with apologies from Yassar Arafat.

His failures are probably going to hurt and personally I don't want me or mine to be hurt. But to get rid of this guy and his entourage will mean he and his administration has to fail and fail continuously and be seen as the ineffective, incompetent empty suit that he and they are. The American people, unfortunately, seem to have a limited attention span and now 9-11 is way way in the past to many and we have been very fortunate that these terrorists on many occasions in the skies or in NJ have not been successful. There was no national outrage to the Ft. Hood shootings and the terrorist aspect was poo pooed to oblivion. I can see the cynical view that no crisis should go to waste (politically speaking).

Thu, 12/31/2009 - 12:48 ET by jdhawkC'mon folks, Putin is a murdering thug and bully. Regarding Chechnya, the Soviet Union and now Russia incarcerate, torture, and murder men, women, and children without thought or reason. Putin handles protests in the Russian homeland with near identical means. Anyone, including Obozo, who has to deal with him should thoroughly wash his hands and clothes after having any dealings with him. Putin is vermin.
That is not how America has or is handling the War on Terror. While I agree with all of you that the handling of our enemies is wrong, (ie as criminals) Putin is one of the last humans on the planet that we should be emulating. We should treat all terrorists as we did in WWII. They should be handled by the military, they have no rights, when they prove themselves of little or no use, they should be dispatched using the swiftest method available, and so long as they prove useful they should never be released until the war is over.
This is how spies back in the day were treated by us and our spies were treated by our enemies. Today our enemies treat us almost universally as spies were once treated by us, regardless if we wear our military's uniform or not.
No one is debating Putin's ideology...

Thu, 12/31/2009 - 13:32 ET by JWFYes. We don't want to emulate Putin. But we do like his sentiment.
We used to have a guy we could look up to instead of Putin. He said "bring it on" and did things like walk into the heart of the caliphate and rip out the toughest guy there and then parade around on a warship in warrior clothing and said hey, you wanted a war, you got it pal. I may be paraphrasing a little there. I tried to find the speech on the internet but all I could find was pictures of monkeys and Hitler. Sorry.

Thu, 12/31/2009 - 15:27 ET by QueenMumAgree, JWF. Of course we can't overlook Putin's KGB background and some of the hardline tactics that we would not tolerate here in the U.S. But when the leader of the Free World has to deal with actors like Putin on the world stage, that leader better be perceived as just as tough or tougher.

Thu, 12/31/2009 - 15:44 ET by JerI couldn't find the speech where our ex-Warrior-in-Chief issued the "bring it on" taunt, but here is where he expressed regret for ever saying it in the first place.

Did you get your poo in one sock?
Fri, 01/01/2010 - 03:52 ET by JWFPresident Bush may have expressed regret. He said it was kind of tough talk that sent the wrong signal to people. Guess who one of those people might be? Maybe a guy that went out and found the interview where he expressed regret?
I didn't express regret. I still enjoy it.
Let's savor your little moment of victory here. And let's look 7 years down the road. President Bush may or may not have had this in mind. But by invading Iraq and staying in Iraq, he gave Islamic extremists a much easier, cheaper target for 7 years. Now, with President Obama shutting down that target by pledging to pull out all troops, they will go back to more traditional methods. Yes, traditional. They have been at this for 30 years. So let's savor that shall we?
Oh, while you were searching for an apology from Bush? Look what I found. I hope you will drink in this piece as deeply as you drank in the Hotair piece.
By the way. President Bush did not say "bring it on" in a speech. I did not say President Bush said "bring it on" during a speech. I paraphrased the last part about war from a speech. President Bush said "bring it on" in response to a reporters question.
Sincerely,

Fri, 01/01/2010 - 04:03 ET by RESTLESS 1While searching for prober perspective of the "bring it on" comment, I found this. Notice this line:
Buoyed by the apparent success of the Iraqi elections, the President
would score a quick confirmation victory with Supreme Court nominee
Samuel Alito, follow it up with a soaring State of the Union address
and then return to full campaign mode with a sweep around the country,
talking about big issues like immigration and Medicare and throwing the
spotlight on a resurgent economy.
I thought the economy turned bad as soon as "W" was elected. But according to this, in 2006, we had a "resurgent economy". What gives???

Sat, 01/02/2010 - 01:19 ET by JWFThis pernicious rampant viral disease of knocking Bush at every chance is becoming more than tiresome. Some of us are looking for real answers and tire of having to defend a man that has been out of office for nearly a year.

If the Vet is directing this criticism at me, I find it somewhat perplexing in that, far from "knocking Bush at every chance", my positive assessments of the former President probably exceed my unfavorable critiques. In any event, I admire George Bush, my views about the man and his policies are honest and unvarnished, and the single brief comment I made regarding him on this thread was merely for the sake of clarification.

Once the Russian hostages weren't treated well, they responded by doing the same to those people they were holding. After that, Russians seemed to stop being taken hostage.

Thu, 12/31/2009 - 16:26 ET by JerJust curious? What is the current position of conservatives with respect to the Chechnyan Islamic radicals? Prior to 9/11, they seemed to be uniformly exalted by the American right as "freedom fighters" victimized by an unconscionable military campaign waged by the Russian government. Is that still the consensus view?

Foreign policy realist
Fri, 01/01/2010 - 21:54 ET by UnsaneThe only redeemable thing I like about Putin is the fact that he is a realist. Realists are always easier to deal with than the idealists or the high-schoolers.
Other than that, you are right, he is a tyrant, an autocrat. He is known for looking up to Peter the Great. What does THAT tell you?

If a man/woman commits an act of terror that takes lives, then they sacrifice the lives of their families. In other words, you blow up a plane, your wife, sons, daughters, parents get taken out. Who will ever step forward again if they know that their family will be punished for such acts? Anyone?

I should clarify that it's the men who have that. I imagine the women would want to stay alive, though I've seen some palestinian women were suicide/homicide bombers too. It gets confusing. He is a liar. He is a putz. He is an arrogant jerkwad who is so stupidly sold on himself and his self-perceived greatness that he cannot even imagine that there might be those who not only disagree with him, but might actually not care for him or his brand of politics.

So far the death toll
stands at 338 hostages (156 are children) and 10 special forces
soldiers. This number is expected to rise though with 58 people still
in critical condition. Our hearts and our prayers are with them. May
the God of Glory heal their broken bodies and may He pour out His wrath
upon the perpetrators of this horrific event.
According to the Moscow Times,
between Sept. 1-3 about 30 heavily armed terrorists seized a school in
Beslan, near Chechnya, and held about 1,100 young school children,
teachers, and parents hostage. When a bomb inside the school was
apparently accidentally detonated, the hostages attempted to flee. The
terrorists then set off more bombs and opened fire on the fleeing
children (shooting some of them in the back) and adults.
What is carefully missing from many of the reports is that the Chechnyans are Sunni Muslims.
The newspapers are trying to make it appear as if this attack was
designed and implemented by a group of rebels as part of an internal
fight for independence from Russia. However, with reports
out that there were 10 Arab men with connections to Al-Qaida, one must
see this event, then through the eyes of our War on Terror.
As Much As I Despise Putin...
Fri, 01/01/2010 - 00:20 ET by Kimberly...he is one of the few world leaders that actually "gets" that Muslims who want to engage in jihad with you cannot be reasoned with. They cannot be appeased. They cannot be placated. They want nothing except the destruction of the infidels, where infidels = anybody who won't bow before their particular brand of Islam.
Putin gets it. He's cold, he's ruthless, he's a commie through and through, but he gets it. Worse, he knows Barry O'Bama doesn't get it, and he is just waiting for the right moment to sink his talons into the confused idealist running our country.
God help us all.
a whole different approach
Fri, 01/01/2010 - 09:27 ET by spepperagreed, Putin does get it-- as far as dealing with the "jihad" brand of terrorism-- or any sort of activity that upsets their definition of law and order in Russia-- they don't bother with technicalities such as "Miranda" rights, or any form of civil/constitutional guarantees-- if they determine that someone is up to no good over there, I'm certain they are dealt with a lot more swiftly there, to send a message a lot more effectively than it does here in the "Mirandized" USA etc-- but I have another theory about why you don't generally see "jihad" activity or shenanigans over there, goes something like this: the international "jihad brotherhood", of whatever wing (Al Qaeda etc), might just be talking amongst themselves, saying things like: "...let's all agree to not mess with Russia for now-- they might just help get the "special weapon" produced in one of our spiritual allies such as Iran-- to use it for our ultimate goal, the obliteration of the nation of Israel...."
The Opposite Extreme
Fri, 01/01/2010 - 05:26 ET by tcm14So Putin's government is multiconfessional about whom they "circumcise"? That type of leadership is as bad as Islamic Fundamentalist rule in its own way.
Of course he is the opposite extreme from our leadership and it's good to see someone speak to the terrorists in their own language, but when I really think about it, "be careful what you wish for".
