Will MSM Report Inauguration Day 'Gore Effect?'

  • Bookmark and Share

Your humble correspondent has a bit of friendly advice for President-elect Barack Obama. On Inauguration Day, drop any mention of "Global Warming." The latest weather forecast predicts that Washington, D.C. will have a high of below freezing at 30 degrees and a low of 20 degrees. It is still unknown how low the wind chill factor will be in discomforting the inaugural onlookers. To chance mentioning "global warming" or even "climate change" risks incurring the wrath of what onlookers have termed the Gore Effect which was noted by Politico:

For several years now, skeptics have amusedly eyed a phenomenon known as “The Gore Effect” to half-seriously argue their case against global warming.

The so-called Gore Effect happens when a global warming-related event, or appearance by the former vice president and climate change crusader, Al Gore, is marked by exceedingly cold weather or unseasonably winter weather.

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

For instance, in March, 2007, a Capitol Hill media briefing on the Senate’s new climate bill was cancelled due to a snowstorm.

On Oct. 22, Gore’s global warming speech at Harvard University coincided with near 125-year record-breaking low temperatures. And less than a week later, on Oct. 28, the British House of Commons held a marathon debate on global warming during London’s first October snowfall since 1922.

While there’s no scientific proof that The Gore Effect is anything more than a humorous coincidence, some climate skeptics say it may offer a snapshot of proof that the planet isn’t warming as quickly as some climate change advocates say.

“You can’t fool Mother Nature,” said climate skeptic scientist and meteorologist Joseph D’Aleo. “We used to kid in forecasting that whenever we were very certain about a major forecast, it would wind up being so dead wrong that we’d be embarrassed. It certainly makes you think.”

Tracking The Gore Effect “doesn’t contribute much to the actual making of policy,” said House Energy and Commerce Committee Republican spokeswoman Lisa Miller. But it “can be fun.”

Obama has already been a victim earlier today of the Gore Effect  when he talked about Global Warming in freezing Philadelphia as reported by Marc Sheppard of the American Thinker:

In the first speech of his "whistle-stop" tour to Washington, Barack Obama talked global warming to a crowd of shivering Philadelphians who braved 18 degree (sub 10 degree wind-chill) temperatures on their journey to the 30th Street Train Station.

It's hard to believe that, given the arctic-like temperatures the northeast has suffered through this winter, the president-elect didn't instruct his writers to reword this passage from his "historic" speech:
"Only a handful of times in our history has a generation been confronted with challenges so vast. An economy that is faltering. Two wars, one that needs to be ended responsibly, one that needs to be waged wisely. A planet that is warming from our unsustainable dependence on oil."

I know -- severe weather patterns in either direction are not symptomatic of overall climate trends, and I generally resist the temptation to report so-called "Gore Effect" events.  But following a year predicted to be the "hottest in a century" that turned out instead to be the coolest in a decade, you'd think that -- given the extraordinarily glacial locale --  the supposedly brilliant future leader of the free world would have appreciated the hysterical disconnect in his words. Not to mention the tough road ahead in selling his plan to legislate commerce-and-lifestyle-altering sacrifice to confront an unproven crisis with wholly hypothetical remedies to a cash-strapped and freezing populace.

So has Obama learned his lesson from his Philadelphia Gore Effect fiasco? Or will he tempt the fates by again referring to Global Warming this Tuesday? In any event, it will be interesting to see if the mainstream media will report on the irony of Obama warning of Global Warming to a freezing crowd.

Oh, and one final piece of advice, Mr. President-elect. Spare yourself even more humiliation by keeping Al Gore well away from the podium. Should his face appear in the crowd of dignitaries the Gore Effect is sure to send the temperatures plummeting even more than is already predicted.

Al Gore: The Bernie Madoff of Climate

" it will be interesting to see if the mainstream media will report on the irony of Obama warning of Global Warming to a freezing crowd."

Noel,

Only those of us who refuse to be sucked into the GW fraud will see the irony. Everyone else thinks freezing temperatures are caused by global warming - no irony there.

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals.

Darn it anyway PJ... That

Darn it anyway PJ...

That is still to warm for what I was hoping it would be...

I wanted more like 25 below without the wind chill factor.

What is absolute madness is like you mentioned...they all have the audicity to stand there when it is colder than a witch's tit all over the country, breaking records all across the land, and still open their greedy mouths about global warming/climate change...they have an agenda to fill and by gawd they are going to fulfill it...come hell or high water...and the looney-tunes keep voting these people in.

I gave up after O won and McC is going to be reaching across the aisle to work with him, we are now seriously frosted.

BT

they are still saying in some of the forecasts that it could snow, or be wintry mix when O has the inauguration. I think this is funny, because as I keep reminding everyone, they aren't allowing umbrellas. So, imagine standing 10 hrs in the cold, then have it be all freezing rain/snowy, with no umbrella. I can't remember who it was, someone from Austria? who said that when he was at Bush's inauguration and it was so cold, he had never been so cold in his life. and this guy, I believe was a snow skier!  Plus, there is still supposed to be a shortage of porta-potties, which are the most disgusting thing ever, so, all in all, should be a little slice of hell on earth.

Wiouldn't bet a used Kleenex that . . .

. . . someone -- perhaps it'll be Mr. Tingle-up-the-leg Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow or some other such adversary/advocacy numbskull -- won't "Gore" up the inauguration.

They can't restrain themselves. We all know that.

What a perfect TV moment ...

In Obama's speech, he'll pay homage to Al Gore's endless claims about global warming ... the camera will cut to Al Gore .... and as he smiles, the white puffs of frozen exhalation will cloud the screen ... while the applause of a million people on the National Mall will be muffled by the gloves and mittens ...

He'll try to kiss Tipper, but their lips will freeze together ...

As I recall. After there

As I recall. After there was a really warm January in 2007. Hanson prdicted 07 would also set a record.

For some reason people keepo listening to these people.

I'm down south feedin' my cows some beans so maybe they can accelerate methane emissions and warm us up. I'm freezin' my butt off!

 Denier and proud of it!!!

What I find comical...

is that the enviro/lib/dems, will try any emotional argument (re: Lenin/Marx) to further their cause of reducing our freedoms because they hate cars, oil and American freedom.

In the early '70's, it was a 'New Ice Age'. When that didn't pan out... it was 'Global Warming'. When freezing temps were the norm and there was no increase in global temps in the past decade as well as Mars)...it was changed to 'Climate Change'.

What's next? 'Man-made Global/Solar Sun Spot Fluctuations'?

Side note...Please PopT, don't post your usual 375,897 articles on AGW. You're preaching to the choir here.

Yeah, remember that "Nuclear

Yeah, remember that "Nuclear Winter" nonsense of the 1980's?  It was totally aimed at the US.  No one on the left ever thought a possible nuclear exchange with Russia would ever be hurt by Soviet Nukes, only the US ones...

I remember

I remember all the hype about nuclear winter. You know why you don't hear about it anymore, it was proven to be bogus. Mt. St Helen blew up and launched millions of tons of dust into the upper atmosphere just like the detonation of hunderds of nuclear bombs. Well all the scientists lined up to see the effect on global climate. There was one to be sure, but the results conflicted with all the theories that were prevalant at the time. Every year theories come and go. Man Made Global Warming does not even rise to the level of a theory as testing has not been done or is not possible. If the temperature were to actually rise in accordance with the so called computer models they might be able to call it a theory then. It will still be up for grabs however as there is no way as of yet to actually determine why the climate does what it does. Too many variables that are too little understood.

In one respect...

nuclear winter was a valid concern. The thought that the USSR might attack first was a real and valid threat. Albeit no one could accurately ascertain what the results might be of a nuclear blast in America at that time. However you are right in regard to the 'winter' that would result. Hiroshima and Nagasaki experienced no such "winters".

Mt St. Helens erupted, spewing millions of tons of ash into the air, yet we and the environment survived.

Today, scientific theories seemed to be based not on scientific fact, but on politcal ideologies.

I fear more about our freedoms than the impacts of 'global climate change'.

The Earth will repair and sustain itself. We humans are but a flea on an elephant's butt.

Yeah, but in my opinion,

Yeah, but in my opinion, the Nuclear WInter crowd was only interested in US disarmament, not Soviet.

Unilateral disarmament Western Style.

If you look at the NH temp

If you look at the NH temp records around the Mt St Helens eruption, there does seem to be a drop. But it didn't last long. Mt St Helens as bad as it was was a cat 5 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index. The Krakatoa and Mt Pinatoba eruptions were cat 6's and also near the equator, so more likely to affect both hemespheres. The Tambora eruption of 1815 which brought us the year without summer was a cat 7.

You won't know it from listening to warmers. But, volcanos do seem to be a part of the climate equation. As the number and intensity of eruptions go up. Temps go down. As the number and intensity of eruptions go down temps go up.

NW is probably over stated. But likely far more real than AGW.

Well the science is

Well the science says during global warming or ice cap shrinkage, the winters would be initially colder because of cloud cover and moister in the air. I mean if you want to rag on the cracks, be consistent. Warmer winters aren't a sign of global warming. Colder winters are. Colder winters aren't a sign of global cooling.

From a television meteorologists????

You want me to learn about science from a former television meteorologist?? People at the NWS actually make jokes about those weather readers. Should a NWS forecast call for an 80% chance of rain and an obvious mid level cap forms over an area, those weather readers are still reading out that 80% chance of rain. Yea that's a wonderful place to start :)

Moisture in the air doesn't make sense

Um.... much more water in the air would be a much, much warmer planet as water is pretty darned good at keeping the heat in.

Do you ever wonder why the Desert gets so damned cold at night? It's because all that dry air is really, really bad at keeping the heat in.

However, in the Tropics where it is much more humid, while the temp isn't as super hot as the desert during the day, it can still be sweltering hot at night due to the heat lingering around

weather

And to think all these years I thought the Gore Effect was when you were caught lying and everyone and his dog knew it.

The rush is on!

They know that the cooling trend is in front of the legislation just like CO2 emmissions are behind periods of global warming....so they have to hurry and legislate us all to the stone age and then turn around and say "By the power of Democratic legislations we have saved the planet!"   Unfortunately for them you can rewrite history but you cant change data when so many people are watching the numbers.  So if it is cooling without any slowdown in carbon emmisions then they will be exposed as frauds.  It is cutting it close because they are liable to try and make the case that the slow down in the economy caused the current cooling trends and hold that up as proof.  However, it may just be the proof people need to go buy an SUV.. who wants to freeze?

Hi PT

Those are some good links. I read a few. Does anyone remember the people on the bicycles who went to Washington who belonged to some global warming group, and it was snowing? There was a picture of them freezing their tails off. Now, that was funny. I just think it is silly for people to think we have so much power over the Earth, and that we control it, somehow. Like George Carlin said, when it gets tired of all of us, it will shake us off like fleas on a dog. Save the Earth? Most of us can't even save money from our paychecks.

or not......the loons will want to reschedule/recreate/redo this event when the temps are more condusive to an intergalactic kegger. They will probably raise money for a super party around the 4th of July and trash the capital. Scratch that. They will probably use taxpayer money to trash it.
