The leaker who "revealed" to Carl Cameron of FOX News that Sarah Palin didn't know that Africa was a continent or which nations were in the North American Free Trade Agreement has outed himself. First of all the leaker turned out not to be Mitt Romney nor one of his associates as some have suspected. More importantly, the leaker's own revelation does not show that Sarah Palin didn't know that Africa was a continent nor that she didn't know which countries were in the NAFTA. Okay, so who is the leaker? Drum roll please, maestro! And the leaker is....Martin Eisenstadt, a McCain campaign adviser. Eisenstadt revealed himself to be the leaker and his reasons for leaking in his blog:
By now you’ve all heard the Fox News report last week that “unnamed” former McCain advisers leaked that Sarah PalinAfrica was a continent, and which countries were in NAFTA. I was perfectly happy staying under the radar as an anonymous source for Fox News‘ Carl Cameron, but now that Palin has accused her accusers of being “unprofessional…jerks…cowards… taking things out of context, and then tried to spread something on national news” and begun to cast doubt on the Fox News report, maybe she’s right to a certain extent. was confused about whether For those of us on the McCain campaign who thought that she acted like a rogue diva and lost John the election, maybe we DO have a responsibility to come out in public. But Sarah… careful what you ask for: some of us may have more to reveal.
She's right to a large extent in that the accusations against her are untrue. Even Eisenstadt does not refute her:
So yes, to be clear, last week I was the one who leaked those things to a producer at Fox News who works with Cameron. Carl and his producers are good guys, and I don’t want them to have to worry about protecting their sources (and going through the wringer ala Judith Miller or Matt Cooper) on something like this.
Thanks for the admission, Martin. Too bad your leak was mostly incorrect.
As you know, I was one of the foreign policy advisers on the McCain campaign who worked with Randy Scheunemann to help prep Sarah on her debate with Joe Biden. Did we outright give her a geography quiz when we started the prep? No, of course not. But yes, in the context of the prep, it slowly became apparent that her grasp of basic geo-political knowledge had major gaps. Could she have passed a multiple choice test about South Africa or NAFTA. Probably. But it was clear that she simply didn’t have the ease of knowledge that we come to expect from a major party political candidate. Other slights came up, too: Not knowing the difference between Hezbollah and Hamas. Or the difference between the Shiites and Suni. Or when it came to international terrorist organizations, knowing that the IRA was in Northern Ireland, and ETA in Spain.
Hey, Barack Obama thought there were 57 states in the union and Joe Biden thought FDR delivered his Fireside Chats on television so Palin's errors were relatively minor. Oh, and glad to see you are not standing by your absurd claim in your leak that she didn't know Africa was a continent. Your admission that she could have passed a multiple choice test on that subject as well as NAFTA comes a bit late after you let the original charges hang out there without correction. And what's with that implied threat that you might have more to reveal? So far your revelations have failed to pass the veracity test.
UPDATE: It turns out that Carl Cameron might have been scammed by a hoaxer. Here is information about "Martin Eisenstadt" from SourceWatch:
HOAX WARNING RE "M. THOMAS EISENSTADT" AND THE "HARDING INSTITUTE FOR FREEDOM AND DEMOCRACY"
"M. Thomas Eisenstadt" is a pseudonym used to describe someone who claims to be a "Senior Fellow at the Harding Institute for Freedom and Democracy in Washington, D.C.[1] A "bio" note claims that "Eisenstadt" is the "founder and president of the campaign consulting firm The Eisenstadt Group and was an advisor to the Rudolph Giuliani presidential campaign in 2007-2008."[2]
According to the "bio" note, "Eisenstadt" was described by the Wall Street Journal as "one of the foremost commentators on issues of U.S. policy towards the Middle East and is one of the bright lights of the neoconservative movement."[2] He cites National Journal’s The Hotline as referring to himself as “a rising GOP pundit” and “a clear-spoken advocate for Rudy Giuliani.”[2]
In June 2008 blogger William K. Wolfum concluded that "M. Thomas Eisenstadt (who originally started a blog named www.michaeleisenstadt.com and was referred to as "Michael") was a hoax. As was his "think tank" called "The Harding Institute for Freedom and Democracy" (which seems to be a joke, being that Warren G. Harding is widely considered to be one of the worst Presidents in U.S. history)."[3] After being outed, the "biographical" note was changed to "Martin Eisenstadt."[2]

I agree with those who are posting that we are not certain that this hoaxer was Carl Cameron's source. Regardless of the source, Cameron appeared to be overly enthusiastic in reporting these unsubstantiated rumors about Gov. Palin. If Cameron ever loses his job he will be welcomed at TMZ.com or the National Enquirer.

Yeah, right. It's pretty obviously that the Obama and Biden gaffes were the product of long hours on the campaign trail rather than deficiencies in education or experience. By contrast, there is abundant evidence that Palin is genuinely ignorant of the world outside of Alaska. NewsBusters' repeated efforts to explain away her deficiencies are potent examples of how ideological enthusiasm can trump sober analysis. Only one person on the McCain team got upset with these allegations, and lashed out -- that was Palin. Where was McCain, and why didn't he come to her defense 2 minutes after the allegations -- that he knew were false???
Why did Carl Cameron and Fox News so despartely want to believe this story?
Fox News has the most balanced view of Palin -- why did they suddenly believe the worst sort of lies about her, when the story was so much out of character?

You must be near the top
November 11, 2008 - 00:15 ET by contraryYou must be near the top for most pointless person in existence. Let's dissect shall we...
"It is possible, this is damage control." -- No evidence of this
"put a fake, faker in place to confess to everything" -- That's called talking out of your ass. Kind of like truthers saying Cheney planted bombs in the towers cause you can't prove he didn't.
"..and the real folk who make real accusation are debunked." -- What would you know about "real" folks. The world you are from is clearly innuendo and make-believe. Only someone without critical thinking skills would come up with this.
"but we all know palin isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer." -- No, we don't know that. By what criteria do we judge her, or Obama, or Biden? Clearly, you are incapable of independant thought.
"let's move on." -- You're not interested in moving on, otherwise you wouldn't have posted here. You just want to say dumb things to which people like me call you on them. Do you want to be thought of as mentally retarded? Were you teased as a kid? Are you insecure?
"while America goes broke, this soap opera continues to get airtime.." -- That is because people like you lap it up. Special interests have you hook, line and sinker. Here's an idea: Stop watching the soap opera, then it'll go away. BTW, America was "broke" a long time ago and nothing you and your kind do will change that.
"talk about messed up priorities" -- Pot, meet kettle.
"I don't have time for this. You all can continue your co-dependency posts and make yourselves feel all chummy... Frankly, you all don't represent where America is going and you might as well get used to it."

Chronicle reporters Lance Williams and Mark Fainuru-Wada did last year when an attorney for BALCO founder Victor Conte admitted he illegally leaked the Grand Jury testimony of Barry Bonds, Jason Giambi, and other athletes accused of using steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs. Williams and Fainuru-Wada were given copies of GJ transcripts, many of which were re-published on the Chron's front page.
Even after said lawyer pleaded guilty to the offense and went to jail, and Williams and Fainuru-Wada no longer faced the possibility of jail time for refusing to name their source, they would not (and presumably, still will not) admit the sworn, damning confession was true.
McCain was never my choice. He was the lesser of two evils, the way I saw it. But as bad as I expect Obama to be, if all of this turns out to be true, it will be harder to make a case that America would have been better off with McCain at the controls.

November 11, 2008 - 09:52 ET by mom_roxagree with you and bt - looks bad on Carl if he's taking Eisenstadt's word at face value. (No word yet if Eisenstadt is Newsweek's source.)
but then again, look at what else has been reported and denied/refuted:
Newsweek reported that Sarah greeted Schmidt and Salter wearing a towel - Schmidt tells WaTimes it never happened
Palin went rogue and contacted Sarkozy - aide Biegun (former NSA advisor to Bush 41) approved the call - the pranksters initially contacted the governor's office
McCain advisor Charles Black said that Palin did not direct staffers to buy clothes for her and her family, and he said that she knew which countries are NAFTA participants. Nicole Wallace has also said that Palin never asked for clothes.
So, I'm taking the other accusations with a grain of salt. If she mentioned once during debate prep that Africa was a country instead instead of a continent, I'll attribute that to a simple gaffe. As we've seen lately, it's apparantly very easy to do.
The Axis of Taxes: Obama, Pelosi and Reid (source unknown)
Of course it was a hoax.
November 10, 2008 - 18:23 ET by TheCynicI never believed that these stories came from anyone in the campaign. Everything about them said "hoax", just like the other 52 anti-Palin internet stories that got circulated. Stories about her daughters, stories about her wardrobe, stories about her political past, etc. Hoax after hoax after hoax. Factcheck.org only documented about a quarter or less of the hoaxes that were out there.
I never expected this to be any different.
If this is the source of the leaks..
November 10, 2008 - 18:29 ET by nwahsIf the guy claiming to be the source of the leaks, actually is the source of the leaks, Fox news has a lot of apologizing to do starting with Bill O'Reilly and Cameron. But I don't think thats what it is. I think the only hoax is this guy claiming to be the source of the leaks, i.e., there was a real person in the campaign that was the leak.

My gawd, this is amazing, I could give a crap less if the POTUS is a "Jeopardy" champion! They can learn what they need, thats why they have "ADVISERS"
I want a Pres. that loves this country because of the principles it was founded on, which Palin does. BOTTOM LINE!!!
All this chatter about afrika, clothes, ect..is nothing but BS!And it should mean NOTHING!
This should have legs
November 10, 2008 - 18:25 ET by TucsonicanA hoax, huh?
If Cameron really did get scammed there's going to be some real fallout!! If it isn't a hoax then, according to the blog, it's pretty much all a lie anyway.
Either way I've got a couple of thoughts on this:
1. Gaps in knowledge can be fixed. Gaps in character..not so much.
2. So the story you gave Cameron wasn't 100% accurate? The word LIAR comes to mind.
3. The real problem was with her comparing herself to Hillary? Maybe you should have listened to what Sarah was saying...it wasn't a policy or experience thing with Hillary but rather a "Woman" thing.
4. As an advisor your job was to get Sarah set up. Sounds like you had something different in mind. You planning on writing a book next?
5. With people like you "helping out" it's no wonder the campaign fell apart. If, Martin, you chose not to be part of the solution you instantly become part of the problem. Remember that next time you're looking for a job.

By any means necessary
November 10, 2008 - 18:35 ET by niner-four-whiskeyThe reality is:
Palin is more like, "one of us" than "one of them".
The entire Democratic propaganda machine is held up by a one-legged stool that depends on portraying the Republicans as a bunch of "them rich, old, white guys".
Forget the reality of Bush fielding not just one, but two African Americans to the highest appointed office in this nation. Remember that Colin was an "uncle tom" and a "house n-word" right up until the moment that he endorsed Obama.
Forget the reality of Obama fundraising, behind closed doors on Billionaire's Row in San Francisco (where the famous religion and guns quote got leaked out of). Forget the reality of Obama being the first presidential candidate to eschew the finance limits of the public campaign system, and going on to raise the most enormous sums of money ever recorded in a presidential campaign. Face it, the Democrats are ALL about rich old white guys.
Palin scares the piss out of the Democrats because she shatters the carefully crafted, media-complicit image of "us and them." They must destroy her with all due speed and by any means necessary.

Gladnick - who was scammed?
November 10, 2008 - 19:37 ET by nwahsI'm still wondering why the author of this article hasn't stated who was scammed - Carl Cameron or everyone who printed the guy contention that he is the leak.
Gladnick, are you certain this guy is Carl Cameron's leak or even if he was in the McCain campaign? If you aren't you need to reword the update. It implies Cameron used questionable sources, and if he didn't, its not fair to imply that. Where did you read that there's a good chance that this fraud is the leak?
Carl Cameron
November 11, 2008 - 06:54 ET by P.J. GladnickIn the first paragraph it states: "Did Carl Cameron get scammed with completely false information?"
That's far from stating that he got scammed as an absolute fact.
The Guy was a Mole.
November 10, 2008 - 19:39 ET by pbthinkerHas anyone considered that this guy was a mole? What better way to screw up a campaign than to get yourself in the middle and start trouble.
I'm a little surprised that Fox News got caught in this thing. I doubt that Major Garrett would have been taken-in by this guy, he knows how to ask questions. Guys like Cameron, IMHO, are too anxious to be the news rather than dig up the news. There are few out there with talent. I do believe that Major Garrett is one of them.
With all the bombs being sent Sarah's way, she must really have potential to disrupt the plans for Obama, otherwise why would they bother lying about her. I will be watching Greta (another one that knows how to ask questions) tonight.

November 10, 2008 - 19:43 ET by nwahsWe don't even know if this guy is the leak or was actually part of the campaign. Thats a serious allegation, don't ya think?

November 10, 2008 - 19:44 ET by SquonkamaticGee whizz, people using the internet to create false identities and spread deliberately misleading hoaxes about public figures, imagine that! Knock me over with a feather. I am so surprised to find out that people actually use the internet to spread fraudulent stories and create disharmony within the ranks of a political organization. This is the same internet generation that Algore is hoping will save the planet while just by chance making him a millionaire several times over on the side.
One person above got it right: If this entity did pull the wool over the eyes of the McCain staff that can only mean that they sort of wanted to hear about it from someone and didn't bother checking the facts before jumping to conclusions & helping to perpetuate these slimejobs. If so they are bigger suckers than even the election margins would suggest and deserve what they have coming to them for playing along with a scam so enthusiastically. Can we humiliate ourselves a little more here on our own or do we really need anonymous plants using the internet to do it for us?
This isn't right
November 10, 2008 - 19:50 ET by nwahsI have sinking feeling that the only hoax is believing this fraud was the source of the leaks, and this site is letting the noise obscure the fact they were taken in by it. I hope that isn't it. It isn't fair to Cameron or Fox news.

November 10, 2008 - 19:54 ET by BlueCat57Since the job market is going to hell in handbasket and I actually want to go back to work after 10 years of raising kids I'm unemployed. But this story has given me an idea. I'm going to start making up news and sell it to the networks. The people running those places are so stupid I should be making a six-figure salary in no time. In fact, I think I'll even write the stories ahead of time. Here's one for just after the inagural. Dateline - New Obama City - The coronation of Lord Obama makes him America's first official king. In his acceptance speech King Obama said, "George Washington was an idiot for not wanting the title king. It is so cool, and the babes love it. I'm getting Bill to show me all those secret passages to sneak some babes into the Oval Office." He went on to say that he and Queen Michele support family values and a dog in every home. Mr. Gladnick meet Martin Eisenstad
November 10, 2008 - 22:02 ET by Lame CherryMr. Gladnick look at the word structure of the ghost as in spook.
Might it not be that moles were placed to self destruct the McCain campaign and certain operatives placed a high priority target upon Sarah Palin.
Is it not obvious Mr. Gladnick, George Allen just happens to be destroyed from inside the GOP. Someone just happened to run and operation on Larry Craig. The entire main Conservative structure keeping Ronald Reagan's legacy beating was removed.
"Someone" picked out John McCain to be the nominee and engineered it. Someone has not bothered to fix inside the GOP the same catastrophe of Democrats crossing over to vote in 2012 primaries to repeat socialist McCain.
If one listens to Gov. Palin, one hears about the clothing scandal how she and no one else in the GOP can quite figure out who did what, but only the clothes appeared and voila the story was planted in the press at the perfect junction to smear Gov. Palin.
The smugness of Eisenstad mirrors Axelrod, Obama, Plouffe and the other cats who swallowed the canary. They have cover from the cartel who stole the election.
Smugness only goes so far as the cartel has uses for individuals, but dislikes thin skinned juveniles they use and promote without often times their even knowing it.
This entire operation run against Gov. Palin was quite sloppy and poor. The people who run this world neither like sloppy, nor vocal nor smug.

UPDATE
Unless of course, the whole thing was a hoax of montrous size aimed at showing the media to be a bunch of non-investigating jerks who will run with any ludicrous story WITHOUT CHECKING because it confirms what they secretly believe.
Of course, it damages Palin to some extent because people will end up believing the lies are actual fact.s.

November 11, 2008 - 07:39 ET by Gabrielle EI thought that the leakers were Nicole Wallace and Steve Schimdt.
Nicole Wallace is a former CBS employee who made the descision to put Palin on with Couric and was in charge of prepping her for the interview.
To me she's got motive.
Steve Schimdt was in the hotel room during the towel incident and was there when she was discussing Africa and NAFTA.
Fox News Sunday did a good job of explaining how her comments were taken out of context and Rick Davis, as well as the man who prepared her for the debate said that these allegations were totally false.

Of course, the major news outlets won't even breathe a word of this to anyone or if they do, it will be a minor story buried on page A-5 in small type or a brief, "Sorry Sarah, we goofed" faux apology. Since The Washington Post just admitted they were in the tank for Obama this past weekend, the least they could do is run a page A-1 story acknowledging how wrong they were about her, but I won't hold my breath.
