MSN Money: 'Why Obama Is the New Reagan'

Barack Obama hasn't yet served a single day in office yet MSN Money writer, Jon Markham, has confidence that he can solve our economic problems for the most fatuous of reasons: he is a good speaker like Ronald Reagan which is why his article is titled, "Why Obama is the new Reagan." In fact, the actual economic policies themselves take a backseat to eloquence according to Markham.  First Markham sets up the economic challenge facing Obama (emphasis mine):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Investors worldwide have prepared for a new chief executive of the most important country on Earth for months by shedding assets and shivering with dread -- and on Tuesday they got their man.

The new boss of the U.S. Treasury, Federal Reserve, armed forces and dollar, the new director of global trade flows, the new captain of the capitalist system, will be a 47-year-old attorney who grew up about as far from the dark center of power as can be imagined -- in sun-baked Honolulu.

Already Markham plays loose with the facts since the new boss of the Federal Reserve will not be Obama. It will remain Ben Bernanke whose term of office lasts until 2010.

Barack Obama now stands in broad daylight, where skeptical investors in Tokyo, Singapore, Beijing and London can assess the real man instead of the political animal running for election.

I think they will find his intelligence, his oratory, his dedication to public service, his ease at gathering smart advisers, his ability to inspire confidence and his tight management of a brilliant political campaign are all the real deal. As a result, despite his incredibly thin résumé, investors will come to believe he is ready to take on this august job.

Perhaps Markham should wait until Obama actually takes office before making these assessments. He had a chance at his press conference on Friday, for example, to address the issue of whether or not he would increase the capital gains tax but we got nothing from him in the wayof substance on this or any other major issue. Markham then entertains us with a bit of economic psychobabble:

It's almost impossible to say with certainty how Obama will govern as these difficulties arise, for there is nothing in his background that will help us judge. We can only pray that he approaches issues in a holistic way -- not reactively but with a grand plan into which each fresh nuance is thoughtfully fit -- much as he conquered the intricacies of the long presidential race.

Now comes the absurd comparison with Ronald Reagan. Of course, while making the comparison, Markham just can't refrain from taking a shot at The Gipper:

I'm hopeful Obama will turn out to be as successful as Ronald Reagan in this regard. Reagan was no genius in the classic sense, but he had a thoughtful, humanistic vision that guided his path. And for the most part he had a good economic team that cleaned up the titanic mess of the 1980-81 recession and, after an initial 20% decline in the stock market in his first 20 months, delivered us into a bull market that generally prevailed for 25 years.

But what was the economic philosophy of that "good economic team?" Markham just can't bring himself to say anything about cutting taxes which was derided back then by much of the media as "Reaganomics." Of course, when the economy did take off, the media quickly dropped that term since they didn't want Reagan's name to be associated with that success. Whatever economic policy Obama chooses to follow, according to Markham, the key ingredient will be his ability to use "smart words," that have "incredible power."

Obama was sometimes criticized during the campaign for being more of a speechmaker than a lawmaker, but that is not such a bad thing. Smart words, delivered well in public, have incredible power. The ability to inspire confidence in a well-articulated vision can help drive men and women to achieve things that may be well beyond their own imagined abilities. This is something that we have seen repeatedly through history, and it should not be minimized.

Reagan also used "smart words" but they were delivered in support of a "smart policy." Smart words used to sell a socialist program still isn't going to make that program work. However, Markham has bought into the notion that "smart words" are the key ingredient into making an economic policy (whatever that policy is) work and just won't let go of this notion:

In these circumstances, the world will need a leader in Washington who can meld his people by sheer force of personality and oratory to confront these dragons as a common task and sacrifice, much like Churchill and Reagan did, and give hope that better days will lie ahead. Fortunately, it seems like we have that guy, and now it's up to him to execute. He'll have a short window in which to gain the markets' confidence, so let's hope he can lead a nation to defeat a culture of debt as well as he led his campaign to defeat the old political establishment.

We still await from Jon Markham some sort of commentary as to what the actual Obama economic policies will be. Does it matter if those policies are free enterprise with low taxes or socialistic with confiscatory taxes? Markham does not give us the answer since he is so enamored with the supposed power of words no matter what the policy. And please, Jon, stop with the artificial comparison of The Hipper to The Gipper.

Reagan was not a

Reagan was not a Socialist.

End of discussion.

No kidding! How about if

No kidding!

How about if he cuts the capital gains tax, continues the Bush tax cuts, and maybe even cuts the marginal rate a bit more, and THEN we call him the new Reagan???

The chances of that

The chances of that happening are somewhere between zero and none:)

Hrm

Why should the tax rate on speculation be lower than that on perspiration?

Clinton surely has some of the blame, here, but George Walker exacerbated matters.

How about we tax socialists

How about we tax socialists and liberal journalists on a per-word basis?

Individual freedom and responsibility were at the core. Reagan called those to heed a higher calling - not forced them upon us.

Yeah.  Obama's exactly like Reagan only completely different.

More Obama-speak from the new Jim Jonestown Peoples Temple, AKA Office of the President-Elect.

What I think is going on is

What I think is going on is that the left has been praying for a visionary statesman for so long, a "Liberal Reagan" as it were for so long they will buy ANYTHING thrown at them in a messiah-nic panic.

I mean, listen to Obamas words in Berlin when he was trying to be statesmenlike in th emode of JFK and RWR, then compare them to Reagans.

Obama: "We are the ones we have been waiting for".

compared to

Reagan: "Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall."

Yeah, you see the difference. The left has been searching for so long they will claim ANYONE to be their messiah....

History will not be so kind.

BD:Agree. Another

BD:

Agree.

Another prime example is Obama's pimping of MLK's "Mountaintop" speech:

"The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even one term, but America -- I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you -- we as a people will get there."

Sophomoric and vain.

Nice to see that the plagiarist Biden has rubbed off on The One.

History will not be so

History will not be so kind. - BD, depends on who is around to write the history.

Comrade Markham must have never researched Ronald Reagan. But then again, rewriting history for Comrade Obama has been the name of the game for over a year now, so I guess this is no surprise.

I hope Nancy Reagan get's a chance to meet Comrade Markham face to face, and I hope she slaps the snot off his face.

Can you say Heil Obama! Dictator of the once free and Great USA!  Now forever to be known as the USSA ( United Socialiost States of America )

Go to HELL Barack, and take you snotty wife and Marxist. racist freinds with you!

Obama is the complete reverse of Reagan.

Reagan stimulated a mammoth economic comeback in the 1980's  that will never be equaled. Regan cut tax rates, cap gains taxes, and lowered the corporate tax that stimulated private investment, business startups and created jobs --  all this in the face of vicious Democrat attacks and threats. Even Clinton cut capital gains. Obama is not even Clinton and don't even suggest Reagan in the same sentence. Obama couldn't shine Dutch's shoes or even put the feedbag on El Alamein or stack hay in his barn and he knows it --- and so does Markham.

I agree Winston and the biggest difference is

Reagan had a message that broke through the media filters.  They tried before, during and after his Presidency to smear him and the people saw through it.  Reagan Had a message that resonated.

Obama's message didn't resonate - the media had to indoctrinate.

Obama is 100% media creation.  He would never even have been elected to the Senate if it were not for Dem operatives eliminating the competition.  He's nothing without the media.  A complete zero.

Good afternoon Dee

Reagan also had courage, honor, backbone, principles, and integrity. All lacking in Hussein Obama

Perhaps Obama Will See the Light and Become More Like Clinton

I had posted some of this elsewhere but it's applicable here as well.

With the help of the Republican-controlled Congress President Clinton's economic policy was similar to President Reagan's. No less than noted conservative economist Arthur Laffer, who was a member of Reagan's Economic Policy Advisory Board, has said: "An argument I have made several times in the past - Bill Clinton was one of the best conservative Presidents this country has had in a long time (speaking w.r.t. economics, not social issues)."

In another article Laffer wrote: "Bill Clinton and Alan Greenspan added their efforts to strengthen what had begun under President Reagan. President Clinton signed into law welfare reform, so people actually have to look for a job before being eligible for welfare. He ended the "retirement test" for Social Security benefits (a huge tax cut for elderly workers), pushed the North American Free Trade Agreement through Congress against his union supporters and many of his own party members, signed the largest capital gains tax cut ever (which exempted owner-occupied homes from capital gains taxes), and finally reduced government spending as a share of GDP by an amazing three percentage points (more than the next four best presidents combined). The stock market loved Mr. Clinton as it had loved Reagan, and for good reasons."

Arthur Laffer popularized the Laffer Curve that asserts that in certain situations, a decrease in tax rates can result in an increase in tax revenues.

President-elect Obama may be a socialist but he also wants to be successful so he can be elected to a second term. For the economy to be successful under Obama, he has to move more to the center as Clinton did. I hope so.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Charles Krauthammer has a post-election analysis titled: The Campaign Autopsy, although I don't agree with his final thought.

Clinton was forced to govern

Clinton was forced to govern more to the center by a combination of his personal issues and the shift in American political views.  He was elected in ’92 and took office in ’93 with a Democrat controlled congress (roughly 60%).   But, at that time there was George Mitchell & Dick Gephardt, both relatively moderate Democrats (compared to Pelosi & Reid).  In the ’94 Elections the Democrats got sent packing and the Republicans ruled with majority in both House (53%) & Senate (54%).  This was the first time in 40 years that the Republicans controlled the House of Reps.  Clinton was never able to get a lot of his ideas off the ground.  Hillary's Healthcare got utterly crushed.

Obama doesn’t have that check or balance.  He completely ignores the concept of the Laffer Curve as evidenced by Democratic debate answer (question by Charlie Gibson) where when confronted with raising Capital Gains taxes would result in decreased tax revenues he replied “for the purposes of fairness.” He then went on to explain that even though the revenues were higher, he objected to the “Upper Class” not paying a higher tax rate.  Essentially, what he will end up have to do is he will have to raise taxes on everyone to compensate for the overall loss of revenue caused by this more “fair” tax.

This is truly a pernicious

This is truly a pernicious form of psychopathy to compare BHO to Reagan.  The MSM has conspired to make BHO a semi-devine figure and draw similitudes with the same man who the MSM had maligned and did everything possible to denigrate his achievements in office and his qualities as a human being.

Reagan led a successful ideological/poltical assault on socialist economics in favor of greater individual freedom, liberty, and diffusion of political and economic power.

Go hide your head in the sand, Comrade Markham, Obama-lama-ding-dong isn't worthy enough to smell Reagan's dirty socks.

Liberal: a power worshipper without power. George Orwell

"Trust me" government asks

"Trust me" government asks that we concentrate our hopes and dreams on one man; that we trust him to do what's best for us. My view of government places trust not in one person or one party, but in those values that transcend persons and parties. The trust is where it belongs--in the people. The responsibility to live up to that trust is where it belongs, in their elected leaders. That kind of relationship, between the people and their elected leaders, is a special kind of compact.....Our problems are both acute and chronic, yet all we hear from those in positions of leadership are the same tired proposals for more government tinkering, more meddling and more control--all of which led us to this state in the first place-Ronald Reagan, 1980

never once have I heard obama speak like Reagan.

wow

Why the Anti-Christ is more like the Christ.

Wesen

Ronald Reagan supported, with money, Pol Pot. Reagan supported one of the most bloodthirsty people alive. Here is libertarian Murray Rothbard excoriating Reagan.

Another thing that makes me wonder if Reagan is truly "the Christ" (or even Christlike) is his behavior during WWII.

Lots of movie stars were making patriotic movies on the eve of WWII. Jimmy Stewart starred in The Mortal Storm, released in 1939, for example.

Ronald Reagan, on the other hand, starred in the Santa Fe Trail, released in 1941. This was a movie which grossly distorts the history of the John Brown insurrection (anti-slavery revolt) and is terribly racist, through and through. At one point one of the slaves says something like "If that's freedom, I don't want it." The Santa Fe Trail rewrites history to make Brown far worse than he was.

So, Great Britain is on the ropes and Ronald Reagan was starring in movies about Racial Supremacy.

I don't like you troll

No. I am seriously starting not to like you at all.

The man is dead. The history books are written.

We don't need your trash here.

Why don't you go flog a kitten now?

Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

I didn't expect you to like me

But you might be surprised to watch the Santa Fe Trail, which lionizes the West Point graduates who would later lead military effort of the Confederate States of America.

You missed a few other actors in your slam.

Let's just s*** on every actor that played a nasty character in a movie that touched on some sensitive subject. Let's just drag them out now and s*** on them all! Come on everyone! Josh SN is leading the effort!

LET'S START WITH MARK HARMON! He starred in that deliberate stranger movie about Ted Bundy.

Oh crap, Joshie, he is still alive. Fudge. We can only s*** on dead actors.

Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

Huh?

He wasn't the villain of the movie, he was one of the heros (along with his best friend, Errol Flynn, the two were notorious around Hollywood, but you know all about Reagan, so I don't have to mention the rate at which they moved through starlets).

Mark Harmon didn't portray Ted Bundy as the hero of the story, did he?

I never saw, nor even want to see, this movie, but I am guessing they didn't go out of their way to make Bundy far worse than he was, like they did to John Brown.

In real life, when trapped in the Armory, Brown sent one of his sons out under a white flag. The son was shot.

In the Santa Fe Trail, when trapped in the Armory, Brown sent out a hostage, then shot him in the back.

Josh

You're as good as Hollywood for distorting the truth. Don't leave out James Cagney.

Seriously, what is wrong with you?

The man was an ACTOR. He did not make the movie.

In case you have not noticed. Hollywood makes huge distortions of history every freakin' day.

We here at NB can not even start to defend the producers of a movie made 58 years ago on the eve of the second world war.

Oh wait. Joshie is here to tell us black people were treated horrifically by Hollywood in a movie! Stop the presses! That is new Joshie. Of course, some people think that you could be describing nearly every movie EVER prior to the civil rights movement. NO. Josh says it is this movie and RONALD REAGAN must be to blame!

And Joshieman says IN REAL LIFE, a movie did not portray something historically. Slap me and call me Captain Kirk! Really? Come on, REALLY? Hollywood did not fudge something just to make the story sell better? NO, just in this movie STARRING RONALD REAGAN they did!

But I recall the movie making it explicit that there was a moral gray area involved, if not outright criticism of the situation.

You're letting your ignorance show, again Josh

At the time, Ronald Reagan was under contract to Warner Brothers Studios.

Your little diatribe is a non-starter of the worst sort.

Pol Pot. Reagan?

For that you deserve to be banned, you bloody troll.

There are lots of articles online about Pol Pot and Reagan

I linked to one by hard core right winger (libertarian) Murray Rothbard. Here is another in the New Statesman, which puts Margaret Thatcher in the lead "support Pol Pot" role.

As far as being under contract, you are suggesting that prevents him from any discretion in choosing roles. That, to the best of my knowledge, is not the case.

So what?

The "best of your knowledge" doesn't count.

Time to put up or shut up Josh.

OK, You Win

Reagan didn't have much of a choice but to take that role. Or his role in King's Row, the next year, when he talked about how peaceful and nice Europe was (it was a period piece set around the turn of the century).

I just looked it up. What a waste of my time.

You sir are a nasty little turd bringing your Reagan lies here.

I could not find one decent man that could confirm your LIES.

Reagan supported Pol Pot LIES from a LIAR.

Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

Murray Rothbard, the New Stateman?

Sir, don't call me a liar. It is simply a fact that Reagan backed Pol Pot. Lots of American Presidents have backed awful dictators. I don't think there is one who didn't.

William Jefferson Clinton backed Kagame of Rwanda. This murderous thug was in large part responsible for the Second Congo War, the most deadly war since WWII.

Kagame was also a member of the Coalition of the Willing.

Mr. Rothbard apparently lost his mind before he died.

He fell sway to the lies of John Pilger and you sir are passing those same lies. Stop it. Now.

It is not a fact and passing along the last thoughts of a senile man does not make you some kind of big man. It makes you a liar.

Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

Um

The article in question was from 1989, six years before Rothbard died.

And that doesn't get around the fuller story I linked to in the New Statesman.

I said it before, most every U.S. President in the modern era has supported dictators. Clinton supported Kagame who helped started the Second Congo War, the deadliest conflict since WWII.

Josh instead of pointing to

Josh instead of pointing to articles which I am not going to read, make your case with specifics from them.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Really?

Ok, here goes: "The Reagan Administration’s continued aid and support to Pol Pot in Cambodia, the most genocidal butcher of our time, is more reprehensible but less visible to most Americans. As a result, Pol Pot’s thugs are mobilizing at this very moment on the Thai border to return and take over Cambodia as soon as the Vietnamese pull out, presumably to renew their bizarre mass murders. But you see, that’s okay with the Reaganites because the Cambodian Commies are guerrilla fighters against the Vietnamese (pro-Soviet) Commies, who by definition are evil. Pol Pot’s butchers as 'freedom fighters' show us that, in the arsenal of the Reaganite Right, 'freedom,' like 'taxes' and many other crucial words, means, as in the case of Humpty Dumpty, whatever they choose it to."

And: "In November of that year, 1980, direct contact was made between the White House and the Khmer Rouge when Dr Ray Cline, a former deputy director of the CIA, made a secret visit to a Khmer Rouge operational headquarters. Cline was then a foreign policy adviser on President-elect Reagan's transitional team. By 1981, a number of governments had become decidedly uneasy about the charade of the UN's continuing recognition of the defunct Pol Pot regime. Something had to be done. The following year, the US and China invented the Coalition of the Democratic Government of Kampuchea, which was neither a coalition nor democratic, nor a government, nor in Kampuchea (Cambodia). It was what the CIA calls 'a master illusion'. Prince Norodom Sihanouk was appointed its head; otherwise little changed. The two 'non-communist' members, the Sihanoukists, led by the Prince's son, Norodom Ranariddh, and the Khmer People's National Liberation Front, were dominated, diplomatically and militarily, by the Khmer Rouge. One of Pol Pot's closet cronies, Thaoun Prasith, ran the office at the UN in New York."

Your evidence is flimsy and

Your evidence is flimsy and difficult at best to follow.  In addition to having no links or proof.  Now governments will form alliances with the lesser of evils for convenience as we formed an alliance with Iraq to be the thorn in Iran's side.

But the evidence is you present is not documented or available.  I could just as easily pull out my but some nonsense like this piece.

Now I will say it takes the congress to give any support and money to any regime so the Democrat congress is at fault.  The same congress that refused any more help for the Vietnamese.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

He has one article by a senile economist.

ONE article by a senile old man that bought the  koolaid John Pilger was putting out.

Some CIA man said something in a bar, anonymously, completely drunk, at least he said he was a CIA man, he said Reagan picked his nose and wiped the bugger on Casey. LETS PUT IT IN THE PAPER. We'll get a senile old economist to put it out and Joshie MC will lap up every word like a good little socialist should.

People on the street were asked the simplest questions and could not give an intelligent answer. They have no earthly idea who or what President Reagan was. Hussein Obama needs to take down his "Che" posters and put up some that say "Yisterday I counent even spel prizdint now I is won."

The gap

Do you know, or have you ever known, anyone who went to Harvard Law School?

Among all the people who have ever gone, far less than 1% of them ever got to be editor of the Harvard Law Review.

Look, disagree with his policies, his beliefs, what he actually does, but if this guy is dumb, I really don't know what that makes you.

I think OJ Simpson graduated from USC.

  • LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

Was he an athlete there?

Sure, the Heismann Trophy candidate.

What were NCAA rules about grades back then? Did they even exist?

»→ Heisman winner

What were the rules and grades concerning Obama's presence at Harvard.

If you knew, you'd have the scoop on the entire MSM.

But strangely, not even his fellow students say much about those years.

  • LYDSEXICS UNTIE!

Josh - aren't you curious why Obama was mum about Harvard?

Just why is Obama mum about his Harvard experience?

read this

Obama Mum on Harvard

Hmm

I figured he was mum about it because he was being branded an elitist.

The article does suggest he got the job based on affirmative action, but it also says he became an editor on merit (winning one of 40 slots based on the writing competition.

YOU REFERENCED THE ONION?!

YOU REFERENCED THE ONION?!

Concerning elistism

Everyone knows he was being called an elitist, so I linked to a hilarious video you might not have seen. Do you need a link? One of the Rothschilds called him an elitist. Hillary Clinton called him an elistist.

I hope you enjoyed the video.

That is Joshs' Schtick

SRP,

That is Joshs' Schtick.  He isn't actually trying to debate anyone or learn anything.

Come on

I provided links. I just didn't think anyone _needed_ links to show that _some_ people had called Obama an elitist.

Geesh.

Free, Obamatons like Josh are incapable of debate or learning.

That is why they are Obamatons.

Did this country just elect Obama/Biden, or was it Soros/Ayers?

R D

Dave,

You're right!  I forgot that he is incapable of learning or debate.

Oh boy Josh - you missed the whole part about

how he probably wasn't even qualified by affirmative action standards to get into Harvard in the first place.  You missed the part about his dubious foreign connections that got him in.

You also missed the part about where he HAS NOTHING to show for it.  NOT ONE signed thing.  A rare accomplishment indeed.  The ONE unsigned article he did have was advocating Abortion.  That was the only thing he found important enough to opine about.  Give me a break.   This guy has Done NOTHING.

Yes, I have known several Harvard grads

having worked in the legal profession for many, many years.  I've also known at least one great sounding black empty suit who got there via affirmative action.  He was the worst lawyer I have ever had the priviledge to work with.  We worked on software contracts together and can I say I had to pull a lot more than my fair share of the workload?

I had a customer at Qualcomm who insisted that I never bring "the idiot" with me again or it would be the end of the negotiation.

This guy would spend work hours at the gym or playing basketball instead of doing work.  Sound familiar?  Maybe he was BFF with The One.

Don't assume that the college someone attends makes that individual smarter than the average bear.  How exactly did Obamination get into the program?  Gee, we don't know because he never released his education records.

I work in computers

The worst computer people I've ever worked with are the ones with degrees. The self-taught people are the best.

I don't know your "empty suit" but, in dishonor of him, I will never bring up Obama being head of the Harvard Law Review again here at NB.

Josh him being a lawyer is

Josh him being a lawyer is a black mark again him, all lawyers should be takin dirt naps.  Lawyers are teh direct cause of almost all the worlds ills.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Come on, not all lawyers - most maybe

and certainly all criminal defense lawyers.

You may be right, but...

...there are individuals within the matrix who are a bright beacon of freedom. She is not alone.

No representation, without taxation!

I guess we can judge them

I guess we can judge them on an individual basis.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Okay

Thanks, Josh, that makes all that extra work almost worth the effort.

P.J.

Surely you aren't suggesting that Ronald Reagan, trained by former pro-ball player Jack Kemp in supply side economics, had a sophisticated grasp of the details of the economy? The second derivative of the current accounts deficit, perhaps? That's an economic figure Paul O'Neill brought up during his confirmation hearing, not some sort of confiscatory nonsense.

Yes. Yes he did have a grasp.

  And stop calling me Shirley.

Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

Did this country just elect Obama/Biden, or was it Soros/Ayers?

Obama = Reagan? That is pure blasphemy!

RD, I was just going to write that Obama couldn't carry Ronbo's Stetson!  Oh how the left wants to make this guy so much more than he has the capacity to be!

Barack Obama now stands in

Barack Obama now stands in broad daylight, where skeptical investors in Tokyo, Singapore, Beijing and London can assess the real man instead of the political animal running for election.

And as Obama's basks in all that sunshine... our enemys from Iran, Russia, etc assessing the 'real' man. With a ZERO resume. God Help Us!

C.O. is good...I've been to your link before, several times in fact!  Scary!

I sometimes like to use B.O. just for the negative connotations!
