Attack of the Mormon Missionaries: Prop. 8 Foes Produce Religiously Bigoted Commercial

  • Bookmark and Share

The foes of Proposition 8 in California which would restore the definition of marriage in that state as being between one man and one woman have produced an incredibly bizarre and bigoted commercial. The video depicts a pair of Mormon missionaries invading the home of a lesbian couple and ransacking it until they find their wedding license and then tearing it up. This video displays obvious hatred towards Mormons who mostly support Prop. 8 but to Los Angeles Times blogger Karin Klein such bigotry is no big deal (emphasis mine):

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

The Yes on 8 campaign is doing its best to spread its outrage -- outrage!! -- over the latest ad against Proposition 8, which would amend the state constitution to take away the right of gay and lesbian couples to wed.

The ad, which debuted on YouTube and is going out on television today, is certainly the most attention-getting TV spot to criticize the proposition. Most of the ads against Proposition 8 have been extraordinarily tame, unlike the fear-mongering rumors spread by the Yes side.

Not any more. The new ad -- a skit in which two actors playing Mormon missionaries visit the home of a married lesbian couple -- is clearly intended to signal viewers that the Mormon church has been a major player in the Yes campaign. Its message is that the religious right is claiming the power to strip others of their rights, starting with marriage and heading into any other arenas the movement finds immoral.

Having viewed the ad, I can't see what the big deal is. Skits like this are common fodder for campaign ads. Were opponents of Prop. 8 supposed to never touch the religious aspect of this? Is it supposed to be unfair to play the Mormon card, considering the role Mormonism has played on the Yes side (e.g., pressing its members to donate and work for the campaign)? Surely the Mormon church and its members never expected to leap into a campaign with this much vocal and financial might, funding it in large part and pushing for it relentlessly, without expecting that they would be viewed as a force that is trying to roll back the clock on gay rights in California. And considering that the Yes on 8 campaign has tried to depict gays and lesbians as attempting to take over elementary schools and force themselves on religious weddings, it's not in a great position to claim bigotry and intolerance, let alone misleading advertising, coming from the other side.

The "missionaries" show up at the front door .... but watch and judge for yourself.

I did watch it for myself, Karin, and it definitely displayed religious bigotry towards Mormons. Apparently a lot of readers of your blog feel the same way:

Wow, the hatred and name calling coming from the Gay community is unbelievable. What happened to the concept of tolerance and love. It looks like tolerance and love only applies one way.

I had been undecided, and leaning toward voting no on 8 when I go to vote later today, but after seeing such blatant bigotry in this ad, I will be voting yes. Thanks for making this choice easier for me.

One final thought. This commecial, as the second commenter noted, will probably help Prop. 8 more than it will hurt it. One reason is the backlash against the bigotry displayed towards Mormons. The other reason is that the video is so absurd that it is actually campy. In fact I can envision Tom Servo and the other robots of Mystery Science Theater 3000 ranking on the video that they call "Attack of the Mormon Missionaries!"

Anti-Mormon Commercial

This commercial is factually inaccurate at so many levels.  For one, proposition 8 in California will not cancel same sex weddings performed over the last 6 months.

This commercial is more anti-Mormon than it is about the ballot measure.  I hope that Mormon missionaries don't become targets of violence from those who violently oppose dissent.  Especially since Mormon missionaries were not involved at all in the campaign for proposition 8.

I'm a lifelong Mormon and these kinds of attacks are not new. Mormonism has a history of being on the receiving end of these sorts of things.

Deerjerky,

As a Jew I am appalled and sickenend by this type of neanderthal behavior.  I did not watch the video, nor do I intend to.

I know for a fact, however, that Mormons, missionaries or otherwise, would never stoop so low as to enter and ransack homes.

This does appear to be a gay kristallnacht against the Mormons.

I respect the Mormon faith and talked with Mormons and I can tell you there is no way they would do that.  When will libs learn, they hurt themselves attacking religion more than they help.

Speaking of Bigotry Against Mormons

Obama might have had much better opposition were it not for anti-Mormon bigotry coming from certain segments on the right.

It's remarkably ironic to make tonight of all nights a time to point out anti-Mormon bigotry. Certain people on our side have their own cross to bear (no pun intended) on this one.

Don't blame evangelicals for a certain Mormon's failure

If a certain Mormon had given evangelical voters a little more credit, he might have been the nominee tonight.  Instead, he went along with the stereotype of backwoods, bigoted evangelicals.  Even so, he got a lot of evangelical support, given that they had one of their own to vote for.  With a different approach, he might  have stopped Huckabee in Iowa.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

Personally I hope neither

Personally I hope neither Romney or Huckabee apply for 2012, we don't need another religious civil war in the Republican Party, and neither one of them were all that conservative.

Here is to Sarah Palin / Steve Forbes 2012

Putting Words in One's Mouth

No where in my post do I use the word "evangelical".  The term I use is "bigotry".  You are the one that combined the two words.

bigoted ad=great results for the Yes camp!

These extremely bigoted ads will only hurt there cause. I feel that most people don't like to see other groups of people be mistreated like this ad does to the Mormons. I think this could be a good push for the Yes on 8 group and thank goodness for the stupidity of the group that made this commercial.

I always find it interesting when someone attacks the argument of another by attacking the person or group. It makes me think that he/she really don't have a solid argument to base his/her views on.

Yes on 8!

This ''AD''

This is Leftist Projection, pure and simple.  Who had billy club wielding Black Panther ''security'' at a polling place in Philly today? Who has the ''Truth Squad'' in Missouri? Who has the intimidating ''youth corp'' with their chants and marching? Who wants to have a ''civilian army''?  Who calls our President ''Hitler'' (or our VP for that matter) even though Bush has never restricted any American's rights - yet 0bama has attempted to destroy several people's First Amendment right of free speech and intruded on many people's right of privacy?

I have stocked up a lot of ammo in the past few months.  I will stock even more - just in case these ''Enlightened Ones'' try to hinder my rights as an American.

these anti-religious histeria ads remind me of reefer madness:)!

The lesbians

outside of a porn flick, i've never seen lesbians as good looking as those in the commercial.

and i don't think i've ever seen mormans as scruffy.

methinks they'll be a backlash on this one.

because of the morman portrayal, not the lesbians. maw

There have been problems in

There have been problems in CA around Mormon temples with protesters intimidating those who go ( who tend to be old people ).  A friend of mine young kids were holding up pro-prop 8 signs, and people were throwing bottles at them.  Yep, those liberals are the party of love and tolerance---picking on old people and 11 year olds.

How To Recognize The Bigot In The Argument.

So What? Liddy Dole Made a Bigoted Attack Against Atheists...

... and you don't hear anyone complaining about it. I heard complaints that it misrepresented the faith of her opponent, that's all, but not one word about the bigotry against Atheists. Do Atheists deserve to be discriminated against because they don't believe in God? I believe in God but I don't have bigoted feelings towards Atheists because it's their belief and they aren't trying to impose it on me. And no, I don't think the acts of renegade Atheist groups that want to take the phrase "In God We Trust" out of our currency is in anyway representative of the whole Atheist population.

Chicken or the egg?

I loved how that moron from the LAT views the Mormons actions as:

"...claiming the power to strip others of their rights, starting with marriage and heading into any other arenas the movement finds immoral."

How bassackwards and short-sighted is that reasoning? What the Mormons are doing is trying to prevent and even roll back a very recent, insidious bastardization of a sacred covenant by the gays and lesbians. The author does not seem to understand that for hundreds of years in this country what she now considers to be a right was considered a huge moral sin (AND STILL IS!) and it is only very recently that her views are considered by some to be legitimate. The Mormons are not attacking time honored institution, they are actively trying to preserve the definition of the convenant as given by God.

Another Attack on Mormons?

**shrug**

I'm a Mormon, and I approve this message.

P.S. Seriously, these attacks mean nothing to me.

The Change we Need

I'm a Mormon as well.  I have not seen the ad and I don't need to.  Guess what, Mormons are the butt of many jokes and have had to deal with a number of harsh treatment since its early beginnings and through it all we have remained a kind and tender hearted people.  Silly ads like this actually have the opposite effect of its intent because pretty much everyone knows a Mormon and they know them as law abiding citizens and good neighbors.  The actions of our people speak for themselves so I don't need to smell trash to know it stinks.  I appreciate all the positive comments above.  Besides from what I've read Prop 8 looks like it was approved so there will be more legislation to over turn this in the future, but at least this battle has been won.

Technically Flawed

Firstly, I am not a Mormon, but I live in a large population of Mormons and they are good people who do not press onto you.

Second, the commercial missed some key details: Mormons were not wearing nametags or were wearing bike helmets.

Thirdly, the two women were actually attractive, and my interaction with lesbians in California: they usually have very short hair and tattoos.

Finally, I really am having a hard time understanding what the reasons are behind the marraige thing.  It seems this is driven more against Mormons than supporting gay marriage.

Gay opinion on gay marriage

I'll bet that even gays realize that gay marriage is wrong. It's common sense and gays are just as intelligent as the rest of us, so coming to the conclusion that gay marriage is wrong ... well, one just can't help coming to the only possible conclusion!
