Will Doonesbury 'Obama Victory' Wednesday Strip Become the 'Dewey Defeats Truman' of 2008?

  • Bookmark and Share

It has become perhaps the most famous political photo of all time. President Harry Truman, on the heels of defeating opponent Thomas Dewey in the 1948 presidential campaign, gleefully holding up a copy of the Chicago Tribune with the overconfident but incorrect headline of "Dewey Defeats Truman." Will history repeat itself this Wednesday when the Doonesbury comic strip is published which assumes that Barack Obama will be victorious? Here is the story from the Los Angeles Times written by Yvonne Villarreal (emphasis mine):

Garry Trudeau's "Doonesbury" is predicting a victory for Barack Obama, and newspaper editors around the country are debating whether to publish the comic no matter the results of the election.

Wednesday's strip is set in Iraq and features military characters huddled around a television that proclaims "And it's official -- Barack Obama has won. . . ."

In an e-mail to The Times, Trudeau said newspapers should run the strip because ". . . polling data gives McCain a 3.7% chance of victory. There's a greater risk that their presses will break down on election day. So I've been encouraging editors to choose hope over fear. And reminding them that if I'm wrong, it'll be my face that'll be covered with egg, not theirs."

Trudeau can always borrow a few eggs from James Carville since he has experience in cracking it over his face when the Democrats lost ground in the 2002 Congressional elections.

Trudeau said he's not worried about the comic if his prediction is wrong. "I'd be a lot more worried about the country than the strip. One reporter has already suggested I just carry on with an alternative universe in which Obama wins. It's not a crazy idea . . . "

From the John McCain camp, spokesman Tucker Bounds said: "We hope the strip proves to be as predictive as it is consistently lame."

Editors first saw the comic on Wednesday. "I thought it was funny," said Michael Weinstein, features editor for the Charlotte Observer in North Carolina. "But it's an accuracy issue. We won't know the outcome of the election until Wednesday.

But...but political "expert" Trudeau is claiming that an Obama victory is absolutely certain.

At the Chicago Tribune, "we are reserving the option of running the strip on Wednesday, but we of course would not typeset until we confirmed the result of the election," said Tim Bannon, one of the paper's feature editors.

The Chicago Tribune should be concerned since they are the ones who ran the "Dewey Defeats Truman" headline in 1948.

John Robinson, editor of the News and Record in Greensboro, N.C., wrote in his editor's blog: "I'm thinking that if McCain wins, the embarrassment is Trudeau's, not ours. [Is] there anyone who doesn't think he's liberal? Besides, if McCain does win, just imagine how much fun it will be to watch how Trudeau handles the turnabout."

And how much fun it would be if a victorious John McCain held up that Doonesbury strip the way Harry Truman held up that Chicago Tribune headline in 1948.

Doonesbury

...is such a hack strip.  I like on occasion when Mallard Fillmore portrays Gary Trudeau as a weenie. Frankly, if I drew a political comic I'd represent him as something a little more vulgar, but that's just me.

Doonesbury?

People read that hack?

arrogance of liberals.

The arrogance of liberal crybaby hippie lovin democrats is completely over the top.

They are the most deserving group of a servere smackdown I have ever seen.

If Sen. McCain does win, anything over a narrow victory will be a denouncement of the liberal elite establishment.

But I fear, being the elitists they are, they will not get the message.

Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

Here's some of the MSM reactions in the case of a McCain upset:

Jack McCaffery: glug glug glug!

Keith Olberdork: rant rant rant!

We don't know the outcome??

It's an Accuracy issue??   Well WHERE is all that optimism and surety from those polls that have obama 10 points ahead here and there??    Is it possible that they know a dirty little secret that they don't want the rest of us to know??? It ain't over till its over.

Today's Doonesbury

... if anyone cares, is here:

Note the trashed Oval Office in the last panel. My guess is, if Obama is elected, he will be portrayed as a floating halo. Or maybe he will not be portrayed at all, since Trudeau seems to portray politicians that he likes speak to a character "off camera" without being seen. He did have Clinton as a floating waffle, but when inpeachment hit it was back to the old "dialogue balloons over the White House" bit.

Where to find

Where is a website that lists all the revelation, or negatives about Obama? Now we find out his Aunt, and illegal is living in a slum in Boston, and we know about his brother in Kenya, and Ayres, and Jew hating dinners, etc.

There must be some site keeping track of all of these. Even if it has some of the more outlandish ones, I'd like to see it. There is just so much coming out everyday, I can't keep track anymore.

Just for fun, I thought of

Just for fun, I thought of turning the tables on Trudeau, and use MoveOn.org's own video against them, by making Trudeau the one guy responsible for an 0bama defeat:

My prayer is that  John McCain WINS!!

Wow

An announcement of a presidential winner on TV for troops in Iraq?  That's in the comics?

Whatever happened to the good comics?  I'm 22 and ask that question.

Did he do a Cartoon about this Family Moment

http://sarah-palin-2008.blogspot.com/2008/09/busted-video-of-fannie-mae-ceo-in-2005.html

McCain & Palin are for Coal and Obama & Biden are against it, in a Bad Economy they say it is ALL about the Economy. So McCain & Palin would produce jobs in the Energy sector and help us get off Foreign Oil....save and create new jobs in the U.S. instead of sending Billions of dollars overseas to people who don't like us very much. Obama/Biden can't be for Coal because they belong in the enviormentalist pocket= kiss your job good bye in the Coal industry and it won't be expanding to make new jobs.

To Sum up the Democrats Deep-sixed the Economy-see video above, are going to be raising the taxes now on people who make 70,000. or more and they won't do anything about our Energy dependence or address much needed job growth. Because the special interest who control them won't let them.

Trudeau has one thing right, they do belong in the Funny Papers.

"So I've been encouraging

"So I've been encouraging editors to choose hope over fear."

Hope for WHAT? Hope that since they're among his sycophants they won't be hauled off to the gulag with the rest of us?

Will History Repeat?

Yes - along the lines of Reagan vs. Mondale...

A McCain Win Would Be Ironic, To Say The Least...

... because from what I've read, McCain and Trudeau have become pretty good friends despite their ideological differences. McCain wrote the foreword to one of the Doonesbury books printed about three years ago, so who knows what kind of relationship they have now.

As for Doonesbury being a hack strip, you couldn't be further from the truth. What about "Blondie"? Or "Family Circus"? Or (shudders) "Garfield"? (Well, there is hope with that "Garfield Minus Garfield" webstrip where it makes it look like Jon Arbuckle is talking to himself instead of Garfield, giving the impression that Jon is schizophrenic. What is more funnier than that?) If anybody actually likes reading those old toothless legacy strips, I have to say I think you might be clinically depressed. "Doonesbury", along with "Pearls Before Swine", "Get Fuzzy", "Dilbert" and "Prickly City" (yes, it can be apolitical as well) are consistently the funniest strips out there. If it is well written, and most importantly, if it's funny, it doesn't matter what political ideology they have. It doesn't matter for The Simpsons, South Park, King of the Hill (I'm still reeling over its cancellation) or Family Guy (well, maybe American Dad, but that's another story) but they are consistently funny and you can usually get past ideological differences to at least share a laugh. Because if you are not willing to take a risk to offend, then you're just a boring legacy strip like "Blondie" or "B.C." where the original creators aren't even alive to make them anymore.
