Chevy Chase: Big Mistake to Let Sarah Palin on SNL

Chevy Chase, who has had a distinctly unfunny disposition for years, is so aggravated by Sarah Palin that he claims it was a big mistake to let her on Saturday Night Live. Chase, who also claims the biggest mistake of his life was leaving SNL after only a little over a year there, let his feelings be known in Access Hollywood:

NEW YORK, New York --

As a former cast member and “Weekend Update” anchor, Chevy Chase knows something about “Saturday Night Live” – and he wasn’t impressed by what he saw this Saturday night, when Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin made a much-hyped appearance.

“Quite frankly, it’s a big mistake to let her go on,” Chevy told Access Hollywood at the Give Food a Chance benefit in New York. “What was brilliant about [‘SNL’ chief] Lorne [Michaels] was that he had nothing written for Sarah and that apparently she cannot improvise herself out of a paper bag!”

And we remember just how (un)funny your Chevy Chase Show was since it was cancelled after just a month on the air.

“On ‘Weekend Update,’ that was her big chance,” he said. “Nothing.”

But Chevy was critical not only of Sarah’s comedic chops, but of the political campaign of her running mate, Sen. John McCain.

“The management behind McCain’s campaign has been dumb. This has only helped accentuate the problem of his judgment in choosing, in such a cynical way, a candidate like Sarah Palin for vice president. I think the last thing that they would want right about now is to have the rest of America knowing all that… to have her be seen on ‘SNL,’ certainly never there. If anything, you just want her to be seen just from a distance.”

“I’m sure she’s very bright,” he added. “But so is the Butterworth woman.”

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! That was soooo funny...Not! Can I write down that line so as to remember never to use it, Chevy?

It's strange that Chevy Chase is passing judgement on SNL performances since his former cast members from the show absolutely despised him as you can read in this 2002 People account about how they refused to show up for a Friar's Club roast of the unfunny "comedian" (emphasis mine):

During his stint on "Saturday Night Live" 27 years ago, and during his subsequent visits back, it was no secret that fellow cast members had little love for the ego-heavy Chevy Chase, now 58.

Those stories surface once again -- and often -- in the new book, "Live from New York: An Oral History of 'Saturday Night Live,'" by Washington Post TV critic Tom Shales and James Andrew Miller.

And it seems that Chevy's reputation rolls on. Tuesday's New York Times reports that at last weekend's Friars Club roast of Chase, his "SNL" costars were few and far between.

Producer Lorne Michaels, the show's executive producer, was at a "family engagement," an NBC spokesman told the paper. Chase costar Dan Aykroyd was at an out-of-town event for which he was being paid, said that comedian's spokesman.

Jane Curtin had declined appearing at the roast, says The Times, because she was expecting to be onstage in the Broadway farce "Noises Off," but then the show closed and she forgot to inquire about the event. "It wasn't a slight," her spokesman insisted to the paper. "The night just slipped through the cracks."

Presenters at the event also wondered aloud why such Chase "pals" as Steve Martin, Martin Short and Rodney Dangerfield were not on hand for the roast.

But Laraine Newman from the original "SNL" cast was there, as were such newcomers as Stephen Colbert, Todd Barry and Andy Kindler.

"I've never heard of half these people," Chase later told The Times. "I've seen bigger names on Mexican television."

A miserable, unfunny man despised by those he worked closest with and Chevy Chase passes judgement on Sarah Palin?

Big mistake?

Didn't SNL have its highest ratings in 14 years with her on? It shows you that lib celebrities don't care about the audience, the sponsors, or the viability of the show.

Surely those record ratings

Surely those record ratings were mostly due to Josh Brolin coming on to promote "W."

His impersonation of

His impersonation of Gerald Ford was so spot-on, it was eerie - not. And his other SNL characters - dang, he didn't play any other characters, did he? Well, his many portrayals of Chevy Chase were brilliant - simply brilliant.

McNotObama '08

Was he the guy who would

Was he the guy who would trip over chairs or fall down the stairs every episode?  Maybe he hit his head too many times.  That is all I remember him doing and I am not even sure it was him.  How could he say she couldn't improvise... she was better than the others who were "acting" all around her (who I assume had lines written for them)

In all seriousness, he did

In all seriousness, he did fall too many times. His injuries led to a prescription drug addiction, and as I recall he attributed it largely to many of his pratfalls.

Now I wonder if Chase watched the interaction with Palin and Alec Baldwin, where Baldwin is clearly reading from a teleprompter, not even looking at Palin or Michaels. It was a funny bit, but to pull it off, he had to make it look at least a bit like it was improvisational. She looked far more natural and comfortable than an Emmy-award winning actor!

My husband and I were

My husband and I were wondering when we watched it why he was so obviously reading and not even TRYING to look like he wasn't.  Perhaps he just didn't want the skit to turn out well and was doing his little part to sabbatoge it.  If that was the case though, all he succeeded in doing was make himself look stupid.

A couple things about Alec...

I noticed, too, that he seemed to be reading from cue cards (actually, due to the short production schedule for an episode of SNL, pretty much everyone is reading from cue cards.)

In Baldwin's defense, when the McCain/Palin campaign announced on Friday that Gov. Palin would be on SNL, it was said that they didn't know what she'd be doing; if true, then that further shortened any possible rehearsal time. Baldwin was probably involved in the skit on as little as 24 hours notice.

After watching it a few times, I kind of felt uncomfortable with his anti-Palin rant ("that horrible woman"); I realized that it's because I know - as we all do - that, cue cards notwithstanding, Alec Baldwin meant every word of it.

Governor Palin's facial reactions throughout were priceless, though; does anyone know if she has any amateur acting background? :)

The wonderful charms and grace of the female of the species leads me to believe that she just does this naturally.  Nothing about Gov. Palin has to be faked by her.  Truly genuine.

It's getting real tough to find an actor/entertainer

Liberals are not big fans of the Constitution.

There is little doubt that, should Obama, Pelosi, and Reid all end up with a big piece of this election, the first thing to go will be freedom of speech.  Obama and his storm troopers are already trying to get that accomplished, during the election.  The Fairness Doctrine, which is neither fair nor a doctrine, will be the first thing to come up.  Once the liberals, on the supreme court, see what they have to work with, they'll all retire at once so Obama gets to appoint 3, then will come the fairness doctrine, take away the guns, and all other forms of tyranny on the American people, which the appointees will uphold.

People, like Chevy, will applaud all of this and call it diversity, or some other stupid thing.

LOL-We can say that in here, can't we?

The only movie he ever did that was worth watching was Caddy Shack.

-And if it hadn't been for Bill Murray, Rodney Dangerfield and Ted Knight, that movie wouldn't have been worth a damn, either.

Rodney Dangerfield died 4 years ago (or about 20 years after Chevy's career did).

Seriously though, a politician who can't do improv - what are the odds.

The biggest ratings in 14 years.  The viewership was over double what Barry Obama got when he was on the show.  I don't want to jinx it, but I feel something is happening here that the polls are not capturing at all.  That was a big crowd who saw that Sarah Palin can take a joke and apparently dish it out as well when she told Alec Baldwin that Steven (the conservative) was her favorite Baldwin brother.

These polls are all juiced to make us think Barry's election is a done deal.  If the conservatives hang tough and show up on election day he is in for a big surprise.

She's got some great dance

She's got some great dance moves as well. Baldwin was right, she is way hotter in person.

Actually...

... his birth name is Cornellius Crane Chase; his grandmother gave him the nickname "Chevy" after a medieval English song called The Ballad of Chevy Chase.

(The song tells of a fox hunt (or chase) that is mistaken for an invasion force (!), leading to a bloody battle in which only about 100 soldiers survive.  Thanks, Grandma...)

I seem to remember Chase's

I seem to remember Chase's pathetic talk show where he couldn't improvise to save his miserable soul and floundered around until even I was embarrassed for him. It was painful back then, but something I'd love to see again.

2 Questions

1. Who the heck is Chevy Chase?

2.Why is he commenting on concepts he dosen't understand?

Gov. Palin trounces Chevy Chase LOL

Rich little boy Chevy Chase and Tina Fey thought they had the propaganda down and here comes Gov. Palin into enemy territory and gives SNL bigger ratings than ever and shows America how Fey is a wax dummy.

That is what Chase is ticked off in and I'm always amazed in these Letterman cocktail types being multi millionaires all the debauchery any Godless human could ever sin themselves to hell with and yet they are cranky.

Hey I believe John McCain will win this by God's Grace, but I won't quit America if Obamanation cheats in.

Instead I'm going to enjoy every day in God reminding all the suffering liberals exactly what I warned them of and rub it in when the stuff hits the fan as all the dead, war, impoverishment and invasion, humiliation is going to be THEIR FAULT.

Joe Biden is warning the world America will be hammered if Obama is installed. Liberals should take Biden's advice and vote like Joe is going to with the Clinton's in McCain Palin.

Chevy, an unbiased source?

Cornelius Chase thinks that Palin's appearance was a mistake? Geeze, why am I not surprised? Oh, that right, Cornelius campaigned for Clinton, Gore, and Kerry, has referred to President Bush as "an uneducated, real lying schmuck," and even called Bush a "dumb f*ch" during a benefit at the Kennedy Center. So I guess this is Access Hollywood's idea of an unbiased source.

I never thought Chevy Chase was that funny, but I didn't dislike him until he made those disparaging comments regarding President Bush. After that I realized that this guy is not only not funny, but a left-wing dumb dope as well.

With those exceptions I have nothing but nice things to say about him! (Now THAT was funny, wasn't it?)

"They are actively promoting the decline of America." ~ Rush Limbaugh on liberals and Democrats

Everyone....

...over the age of 40 knows that the show really took off in the second season when Bill Murray took over for Chevy Chase.

Sarah is no professional actress, but she seemed perfectly relaxed and at home on the show.

What Chase is really upset about is the 14 million viewers who suggest that Gov Palin is the front runner four years from now if McCain can't pull this election off.

The libs do not want dueling charisma on top of 4 awful Obama years of socialism, economic failure and international incidents such as those "Say it ain't so Joe" Biden predicted.

Chevy who?

I never got the idea that he was funny even when he was on SNL. Silly in the Jerry Lewis kind of way but that type of humor never did anything for me. He like Maclean Stevens thought too much of themselves and quit the only shows that gave them a platform. Once they each left the shelter of the company of others much more talented they did not have much success on their own. Consequently, Stevens was man enough to admit many times he was stupid to leave MASH but Chase has just become a bitter, resentful whiner. Probably always was one but now he is the crotchedy (sp) old man on the street who yells at kids playing too loudly or step on his grass. The phone ain't ringing because the power people figured out what many already knew...He isn't funny and really never was. He just happen to be surrounded by many other talented comedic personalities and he gained by their company. He only has the one character he always plays and it wore thin after the first take. Where is that stage hook?

Doug,

"Silly in the Jerry Lewis kind of way but that type of humor never did anything for me."

I couldn't agree more. I always figured that if you have to fall down, and basically act like an ass, you had no talent. Chevy is the buffoon, and even with good writers, he couldn't deliver.

The sad thing is - it has worked.  They successfully turned 2/3 of the country against Bush with their hateful stuff. They've also turned people against the Republican brand. Bush and the RNC took the high road to their detriment.  I was sure that people would give them credit for staying above the fray and would think of the Hollywood nuts and MSM as the hateful lunatics, but it didn't work that way.

As always - the squeaky wheel gets the grease - it's unfortunate - very unfortunate - but it's a reality we can't hide from.

Dee, David is right.

If conservatives and Republicans express the same hateful attitudes that liberals and Democrats embrace, then nothing can be accomplished to restore the nation.

For those of us who are Christians, we have a responsibility.  If you're curious, look up Matthew 5, and start reading in verse 44.

That's our mandate; we have no other options in the matter.

Maybe Chevy really DID eat

Maybe Chevy really DID eat all those lamb testicles after all!

Has Been

Dwayne  P.  Theriot

Who the hell cares what a has been like Chevy Chase has to say anyway.  He probably said those things just to get on camera again since it has been (no punn intended) a long time.

Palin is relevant, Chevy...and you're not.

Funny, here we are...six years later and if asked again to appear I'm guessing Chase would kill to have Colbert as a "roaster." I'm sure Stephen would have a "prior commitment" these days though.

I actually bought the SNL first season set and it's a bit jarring to see compared to what the show evolved into. One thing that really jumps out is the real stars were John and Danny as far as performances go. Chase only had a couple of good moments outside of Update (the job interview sketch with Richard Pryor being the main one, and there's no way he'd do a bit like that now). His status as the "breakout" performer can be atributed to three factors (1) being one of the main writers, he was in better position to lobby for his material, (2) being in every cold open and the Update, saying his name, he was the one cast member people could name and (3) of the males cast members, he was the most "traditionally" handsome so the network and reporters focused on him. No longer having that kind of control over the material and being just an average looking actor as far as leading men go pretty much explains why his film career has been so up and down. There's some decent pictures in there, but there's also "Under The Rainbow," "Modern Problems," and "Oh Heavenly Dog" and he passed on "Animal House."

His peers may not stand him, but Miller credits him as an influence on his time as a cast member and a lot of people grew up loving Caddyshack, Fletch and the first three Vacations. He has money. He's got the blonde trophy wife. Why's he so bitter? Maybe he sees that John, even though he's dead, had more hits than misses in Hollywood, Jane and Dan seem to be happy and have ballanced career and families and Gilda had even found a degree of peace before she passed on. Chevy is getting older, feeling the residual pain from those pratfalls and having to deal with the fact he peaked before he was 35.

what a loser

Did Chevy Chase just make a racist "Ugly American" remark about Mexican television? What a loser.

Help me out...

I'm 37 and I've never heard of this guy.

Che-vy Chase??   Was he some kind of actor or singer or something?

When asked about Chevy Chase replacing him when he retired (Chevy would guest host when Carson was on vacation) Carson said, "He couldn't ad-lib a fart after eating a plate of beans".

I miss Johnny

The more I watch late night television, the more I really miss Johnny Carson.  I watched him for years and I still can’t tell you where he leaned politically.  He could be funny and even do some political humor without resorting to the bile spewed by the very unfunny David Letterman.  He had a class about him that is sadly lacking in today’s performers.

Hello Tom

No Johnny ia one of the reasons I have no TV. The others are too many to list.

Man, you are so right.

As a kid, I wanted to develop my skills as a comedian--and who better to learn from than from the best, right?  So, most every weeknight for a long time, I stayed up past my bedtime and recorded Johnny's monologues, then listened to them over and over the next day.

No one comes close these days.  Leno never had it (that whole "explaining the joke after telling the punch line" thing drives me nuts), and Letterman wasted his talent and Johnny's blessing.  I mean, if you actually have Johnny Carson sending you material and you still can't get it right?  Wow.

"apparently she cannot

"apparently she cannot improvise herself out of a paper bag!”"

Well, DUH. She's a politician, not a stand-up comedian. She knows when she's qualified and when she's not, and when she's not qualified she shuts her trap and lets the professionals work.

I think that speaks well of her.

"He was NOT amused at his

"He was NOT amused at his Comedy Central Roast about a year or so ago."

I remember watching this and loving every minute of it. It was awkward and more mean-spirited than a lot of roasts usually are. I got the feeling that none of the roasters could stand Chase.

Barely anyone there knew

Barely anyone there knew him.  Most of his SNL compatriots begged off (prior commitments, blah, blah, blah).  Who was it that responded to Chevy's "in a room with a bunch of nobodies" line with "at least we're nobodies at the beginning of our careers"?  That pleased me.
