NYT Blogger Discovers Another 'Lifelong Republican'

  • Bookmark and Share

fake republicanAttention all you liberal journalists out there, including Timothy Egan blogging at the New York Times!

You really do need to come up with a better descriptive term than "lifelong Republican" which is the most obvious "tell" of all that the person in question is not quite what they claim they are.

In the case of Egan, trying very hard to project "Republicans" as drifting away from John McCain, he used that overused description in his most recent blog entry:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

My friends: it’s not good for Senator McCain.

“As a small business owner, it’s very hard to watch a lifetime of hard work and savings just wither away in the last two weeks,” said Jan Martin, a native of this more-than-mile-high city, and a lifelong Republican. “The debate on Tuesday night has, if anything, bolstered my opinion.”

So Jan Martin, who also serves on the city council, will cross party lines in less than a month and vote Barack Obama for president, she said. She’s not leaving the Republican party – she’s deserting the nominee.

Are you really going to make me have to go through the motions in checking on how legit "lifelong Republican" Jan Martin really is, Timothy? Well, okay. Here goes. A very quick check on "lifelong Republican" Jan Martin reveals that (surprise, surprise) she is a member of the ACLU:

THE AMERICAN CIVIL LIBERTIES UNION
COLORADO SPRINGS CHAPTER holds its

ANNUAL MEETING
Tuesday, April 15 7 PM Slocum Hall Colorado College

With
Nominations of new members And its
SPRING FORUM THE COLORADO PARTY CONVENTIONS: PROTECTING FREE SPEECH and PUBLIC SAFETY With
Taylor Pendergrass, ACLU-Colorado Staff Attorney,
Main Speaker
and
  • Jan Martin, Colorado Springs City Council
  • Bill Sulzman, Peace & Justice activist leader
  • Steve Liebowitz, Deputy Chief of Police
  • Dennis Apuan, Vice-Chair, El Paso County Democratic Party

Gee, is that Peace & Justice activist leader also a "lifelong Republican?" How about that Vice-Chair of the El Paso County Democratic Party? Oh, and it seems that "lifelong Republicans" make it a habit to hang out at Colorado's Gay and Lesbian Fund party:

Among those at the festive event were Eve Tilley, whose signature hats will be the subject of an art project at Bemis School of Art in the spring; Bruni Berkowitz; Pat Peterson; Alma Cremonesi, director of the Pikes Peak Lavender Film Festival; Gerald Albrent; Susan Presti; Pam McManus; Lynn Pelz; Chris Garvin; Amy Julye; Jan Martin; Richard Tucey; Beth Kosley; John McIlwee; Wendy Mike; Ken Robinson; Gladys Harris; Steve Sletta; David Carroll; Scott Hente; Cynthia Nimerichter and Ted Worcester; Lynne Telford; Sen. John Morse; Dwight and Sue Brothers; Ruth Roland; and Jesse Trevino.

A look at  the City of Colorado Springs website reveals that "lifelong Republican" is also a member of the Citizens Project, one of whose projects includes this:

Gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning people continue to face unfair discrimination in housing, employment and public accommodation. Citizens Project believes the principle that “all men are created equal” as stated in the U.S. Constitution will never be faithfully upheld while it remains legal to discriminate against people because of who they are. Objections to GLBT civil rights come from religious doctrine, and our nation is founded on laws and principles, not on any particular religious faith.

I object! There is no mention here of otherly gendered "lifelong Republicans."  I claim this oversight amounts to discrimination. In any event even though one might easily find "lifelong Republicans" as members of these groups one could count the number of conservative Republicans in the same groups on the fingers of their hand...but only if that hand were missing several fingers.

So my advice to Timothy Egan and other liberals is to come up with a much more original term than "lifelong Republicans." The moment you you use that term, your true agenda is revealed from the get-go.

Classic

Classic. Thanks for the post and the research. I think I've read in the media more this year than any other about Democrats who will vote for McCain (Hillary people) and Republicans who will vote for Obama.  I always wonder just how strong these people were for their 'previous' party or beliefs to begin with.

Another article

Did a little googling and found this..how many Republicans are referred to as 'progressive candidates'?

 http://www.csindy.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid%3A20432

In the city election that wrapped up Tuesday, a single progressive candidate was elected to City Council. Of course, Colorado Springs voters showed up in greater numbers for Jan Martin than any other council aspirant. But many were left wondering — why only one?

I can understand it.

I can understand Democrats voting for McCain since, as a Republican, I consider him closer to the Democrats on many things.  However, I can't understand a Republican voting for Obama.  If you own a business and listen to Obama's tax plans, you know your business is going down the tubes.

Let's face it, the closest thing to a real Republican on the ballot this year, is Sarah Palin.

Democrats: Stuck on Stupid since 2000.

Jan Martin Jungle Fever

No one including Ray Suarez wants to mention that specific female voters have just like Stanley Ann Dunham jungle fever in hating their own persona and clinging to a person of another race.

Jan Martin's liberal venues are spoken to in Obama as she is a Marxist at heart. She wants American punished for whatever hurts she suffered as a child just like Obama and Obama is going to punish America.

The people who cling to Barack Obama hate America. The people who are inspired by Clarence Thomas love America.

Lifelong Demorat

As a lifelong Democrat  I find this article reprehensible!  How dare you do research on your own.  Why, you could very well put this poor reporter out of work.

How would you like to live with that knowledge.  Doing your own research!  Ha! What is this country coming to!

This proves NYT wants communism to take over this country?

Please understand that if I were a black, I would feel so much better if a black person became president, especially in light of the history of my race in America. And I have no racism towards people who are not my color and even took by black friend to Paris, France, on a vacation recently, and have many, close, black friends, including those I grew up with.

In fact, if a person, say like Colin Powell or Condi Rice were running for president, even as a Democrat, I would certainly vote for them over McCain.

My concern about Obama, however, is what is troubling my heart. I can read very well-documented evidence that Mr Obama is not a “nice guy.” So if I vote for McCain, it is because I consider him simply the better of the two for America, even if McCain is not "perfect."

The concerns which are truly troubling my heart have to do with Obama's well-documented history:
•    Obama was schooled at an early age in a terrorism style lifestyle.
•    Obama worked diligently, side-by-side, with the domestic (white) terrorist and socialist, Bill Ayers, for more than 4 years (saying that was a casual acquaintance is a lie) and even launched his career from Mr Ayers living room. And even if that work was not terrorist in nature, the fact that Obama would legitamize a domestic terrorist is plainly unacceptable in this day of terorism and 9-11, especially since Mr Ayers is unrepentant and bragged on 9-11 that the Weather Underground did not do enough destruction.
•    Obama gave a "pep talk" to a crowd of his cousin's terrorist followers in Kenya in 2006, who by that time, had committed genocide on over 500,000 people, including burning people alive inside of churches, and raping and murdering women and children and displacing hundreds of thousands from their lands and their homes.
•    Obama was a member of the New Party in the USA, a group well-documented as being communists, which was a direct affront to democracy by using a theory called “fusion”, which was ruled unconstitutional, which "stole" votes from wherever the wanted to, just to win.
•    Obama has worked closely with ACORN, which has been proven to have committed voter fraud thousands of times, which especially troubles my heart, because that is a direct attack on democracy, and thus a form of election “terrorism,” and a direct attack on the country I love, and so Mr Obama is attacking democracy. (He is misusing democracy to destroy it, even as I speak.)
•    Obama has worked closely with members of Congress who are significantly to blame for the Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and other economic failures, meaning we can look forward to even more economic failures with Obama as president.
•    If Obma's tax plans are implemented, he will indeed destroy a huge number of businesses in this country, and not just because John McCain says so, but so do the vast majority of business owners in the country also say so, per a recent survey. And I believe this is deliberate on Obama’s part, in order to attempt to move us closer to communism, by one day saying, if elected, “See, capitalism is a failure -- time for socialism!” Then one day, “See socialism is a failure -- time for communism.” But pure socialism and communism have been proven to be incapable of raising anyone’s standard of living, and ultimately enslave people, regardless of color, and yes all become equal, equally poor, that is. In fact the poorest people in America, on average, are better off than the average person in the average communist country.
•    He is also a bully, arrogant and an elitist. It shows in the way he carries himself. And he dismisses any critique of him as just vicious attacks (that is, so listeners will not believe anyone is telling the truth about him), which is also called re-direction.
•    While McCain told a few campaign fibs himself, I have counted dozens of Obama lies, that make Obama seem to be a habitual liar, so how can he be trusted? How can he be counted on? He can't!!! On the campaign trail he argues he is for immediate troop withdrawal, but secretly asked the Iraqi government to delay any withdrawal until have he was in office so that he might get the credit. (scum)
•   The MSM, which is supposed to be a bastion of protecting freedoms, is falling for Obama, hook, line and sinker. And "sinker" is the really scary part.
•    Finally, because people vote far more with their emotions and not with their brains, I am very worried. (e.g., On “The View” the liberal hostesses, when interviewing Obama, said he was kind of sexy and sort of cute. That is hardly a good reason to vote for someone.) And poor McCain, still has his war injuries, which makes people fell uncomfortable when they look at him hobbling around a bit. Basically, its elementary school mentality, you know, calling someone “fat” for being overweight, or for that matter, “niger” for being black, or also going "ugh" when they saw Sarah Palin's son.
So with all of the above in mind, I think the best case scenario will be that Obama, if elected, will just cause a great deal of problems for America, and with the worse case scenario, he will help to usher in communism, and the destruction of our precious freedoms.
And I am trully worried about the worst-case scenario because Obama's methods follow the pattern of other communists as they rose to power, namely you dupe all the so-called disaffected people, gain their sympathy, and if elected, start to work for changes that are not for the good of the country, but for the good of the cause of communism. Yes, change is coming, if he is in power, but not for the good, for certain. With his history, "for the good of the country" and "Obama" in the same sentence are an oxymoron.

So my soft prayer is “God bless McCain, Palin and Biden” but “God damn Obama.”

I got the impression from this interview that this turnabout was fairly recent, but Martin made her donation a long time ago.

good catch PJ!

I decided to respond to the author's blog.  (We'll see if it passes moderation.)

"It looks like the author has skewed the facts somewhat.  It turns out that the "lifelong Republican" Jan Martin is actually a member of the ACLU and a gay rights advocate.

I'm sure there are a few people in this great country who are ACLU members AND gay rights advocates AND lifelong Republicans.  But it is more likely that Jan Martin is not one of those few.  It is much more likely that the author needed someone to agree with his template and Jan was willing to follow the script.

When oh when are we going to get honest journalism?"

Lifelong Republican

Wait till Jan Martin, small business owner receives her first tax bill from Barack Hussein Obama.  Get ready for your sticker shock Jan!!!!!!!!!

You might want to reconsider that vote.

"Citizens Project believes

"Citizens Project believes the principle that 'all men are created equal' as stated in the U.S. Constitution ...."

Lifelong leftist Jan Martin should inform her fellow lunatics at "Citizens Project" that "all men are created equal" ain't "stated in the U.S. Constitution."  It's from the Declaration of Independence.

Another favorite (bogus) technique of political activists who call themselves "objective" "neutral" "journalists" is to allege that "some [unnamed, of course] Republicans say ...."  Without fail, the alleged, unnamed "Republicans" dutifully quoted by the political activist sound identical to the most fringe leftists you could find at a Code Pink rally.

I have NEVER come across a

I have NEVER come across a "lifelong Republican" who would have anything to do with the ACLU, other than express great disdain for the overwhelming liberal "organization".  And, I have never met a "lifelong Republican".  It's impossible to be one, you only have the ability to be a "lifelong Democrat", as ACORN has shown us in this cycle by illegally registering babies/children to vote. I have been a Republican since I was 18 and first registered to vote, but I have NEVER been a "lifelong Republican".

what a joke

Whata joke so now as a life long republican I some how want to raise spending by 1 trillon and as a small businesman I dont want to make over 250k a year unless I suddenly want more of a tax burden because Iam a patriot? As Rush says seminar callers

These "life long

These "life long Republicans" must have been just empty shells politically, otherwise they'd have us believe that they just up and decided to ditch their strong core political philosophies and do a 180 turn towards far left liberalism for some reason or another. Riiiight.

I really do think that there's a very small pool of people out there just waiting to be cast by the media, every four years, as "disaffected lifelong Republicans who plan on voting Democratic this election" - apparently, it's their job...

McNotObama '08

I can not tell a lie...

I am a registered Republican and I will be voting for Sarah Palin...and oh yes, that white haired gentleman too.  Jim Webster

Can you believe the son of William F. Buckley...

saying he'll probably vote for Obama?  I can understand his being turned off by McCain and utterly disappointed that he was nominated over someone like Romney, Thompson or even Guiliani, but Obama?  WFB, Jr., has to be turning over in his grave.  Jim Webster

There's always that one

There's always that one crazy loon in everyone's family. Why should his family be any different? WFB Jr. is at this very moment trying to claw his way out of his coffin to put his hands around his sons throat.

"Lifelong Republican"

"Please understand that if I were a black, I would feel so much better
if a black person became president, especially in light of the history
of my race in America."

Hmmmm, how shall I put this, without being too insulting?

How about Bull. Last I checked, I've been black for all of my 59 years and it isn't about feeling good at the election of any black person, but feeling good about the election of a certain black person.  Just like whites, if I don't agree with the policies of the person running, I don't vote for them, no matter what their ethnicity.   Would you assume I (or any sane human) would be jumping for joy over the election of a Marion Barry?  Quick, explain to me the difference between voting FOR Obama because he is black, and voting AGAINST Obama because he is black. Flip sides of the same coin.

On the subject of "lifelong Republicans", I registered as Democrat many moons ago when I was 21. I never bothered to change it for two reasons.  Laziness is number one. Secondly, I lived in NYC. Voting in the Dmocratic primary allowed me to vote for the saner Democrat and probable mayor. I can't ever recall having voted Democrat in any election other then the Primary. And now I'm listed as Independent.

In any case, shouldn't all Progressives be wary of using "code words"? You know - like "lifelong Republican"? I think the "subtext" involved is deceitful container of excrement.

Good post

Your reasons for remaining a registered Democrat are precisely the same so many conservative Southern Democrats did so as well. It was the only way one could vote at all in many areas and at least gave the conservative a say in which of the two only candidates running would win. That all changed when Reagan came into office. Within the county I live in, there was a line at the Supervisor of Elections offices of old conservative Dems who could finally chnange their "affiliation". This was the case with many lifelong local politicians as well. When they found out they could no longer get elected just because they had a "D" behind their names, many, in fact most, chnanged Parties. Some went so far as to change back and forth several times trying to stay in office but the people had finally had enough of them and they faded into the woodwork of small town politics. I am not bound by Party but always vote for the candidate and where they stand. Voting by "feeling" good is immature and indicates someone who is making an emotional decision rather than a thought out decision. Emotions are subject to change as soon as the weather changes or a sad song comes on the radio.

Jan Martin Won't Pay Taxes

Jan Martin, like all Democrats who are on boards will get "special" priviledges, where their taxes will be offset by the money they steal from the people.

Just like the politburo.
