This is probably an article that the New York Times wishes it didn't have in its archives because it reveals the true culprits behind the current Fannie Mae meltdown. You will find "uncomfortable" truths in this September 30, 1999 article by Steven A. Holmes starting with the title, "Fannie Mae Eases Credit To Aid Mortgage Lending," that you won't find in current editions of the New York Times (emphasis mine):
In a move that could help increase home ownership rates among minorities and low-income consumers, the Fannie Mae Corporation is easing the credit requirements on loans that it will purchase from banks and other lenders.
The action, which will begin as a pilot program involving 24 banks in 15 markets -- including the New York metropolitan region -- will encourage those banks to extend home mortgages to individuals whose credit is generally not good enough to qualify for conventional loans. Fannie Mae officials say they hope to make it a nationwide program by next spring.
Fannie Mae, the nation's biggest underwriter of home mortgages, has been under increasing pressure from the Clinton Administration to expand mortgage loans among low and moderate income people and felt pressure from stock holders to maintain its phenomenal growth in profits.
Get that? Pressure by the Clinton Administration to expand mortgage loans by lowering its credit requirements.
''Fannie Mae has expanded home ownership for millions of families in the 1990's by reducing down payment requirements,'' said Franklin D. Raines, Fannie Mae's chairman and chief executive officer. ''Yet there remain too many borrowers whose credit is just a notch below what our underwriting has required who have been relegated to paying significantly higher mortgage rates in the so-called subprime market.''
That would be the same Franklin Raines whom the Washington Post identified as a mortgage and housing adviser for the Obama campaign until that newspaper told us not to rely on its own reporting. We return you now to the article that the New York Times wishes didn't exist:
In moving, even tentatively, into this new area of lending, Fannie Mae is taking on significantly more risk, which may not pose any difficulties during flush economic times. But the government-subsidized corporation may run into trouble in an economic downturn, prompting a government rescue similar to that of the savings and loan industry in the 1980's.
Oops! And that is exactly what has happened nine years later. And who were the "killjoys" at the time warning against Fannie Mae easing the credit requirements? That answer is also provided in the NY Times article:
''From the perspective of many people, including me, this is another thrift industry growing up around us,'' said Peter Wallison a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. ''If they fail, the government will have to step up and bail them out the way it stepped up and bailed out the thrift industry.''
Yup. The conservative American Enterprise Institute was accurately warning about this impending financial disaster back in 1999. If you don't believe me, then check out the New York Times archive.

Blame where it is due
September 25, 2008 - 22:20 ET by wdhorningFirst, blame Democrats for figthing any improvement in regulations, starting with Clinton (per the NYT), and then resisting regulations all through the Bush years, including the McCain co-sponsored bill, S.190, submitted in 2005 and again in 2006, where Democrats would not let the bill be passed, a bill that would have gotten the process going towards better regulation.
Second, blame all the MSM, who have clearly supported the Democrats, for MSM's failure to say anything. They would rather see the country in economic chaos, than to see a Democrats lose an election.
Third, blame the greedy CEOs, who could see this all coming, but did nothing to curtail it.
Fourth, blame the greedy bastards, who were not poor people trying to buy their first home, but entreprenuers with falsified documentation, going around trying to flip houses with cheap money they could borrow for purchases and renovations.
Finally, blame those who vote Democrat for being so stupid to elect people who's only mission is to "give away the ship".

How ironic that it was the very misguided policies of the Democrat's drilling ban which pushed up crude oil and gasoline prices to the point the economy started to faulter. You will notice that our real problems with the mortgage industry started when the price of gasoline quickly ran up from $2/gal to $4/gal thus causing the economy to slow down and people at the low end of the economic scale to be laid off. Now you can see how utterly stupid Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid really are. The morons and there buddies couldn't see past the end of their PC noses to realize their conflicting policies. Since the 1970s every recession and economic slowdown was due to the fast run up in the price of energy.

Mr. Gladnick:
September 25, 2008 - 15:58 ET by j. frank wilsonHow many of these loans did Fannie Mae actually buy - in dollars and as a percentage of its annual volume? This is the loan product that did Fannie Mae in?
And when did these loans begin to go bad (assuming they did, of course, as a 1999 article won't tell us that)? It takes an average of at least three years for a conventional home loan to go south (not including first payment defaults and other fraud, of course). So Fannie Mae would have started taking major hits starting in 2003. Is that what happened seven years ago?
Are you suggesting these are the same loan programs as sub-prime, or even neg am option ARM's? Alt-A? Loans that Fannie Mae would not purchase from mortgage originators?
And what does this article have to do with the implosion of vintage 2005, 2006 and 2007 mortgages? Were these sound loans in 2000 and terrible ones five years later, some sort of financial time bomb?

Great Job P.J.
September 25, 2008 - 17:56 ET by LostSoulThis is 1 of the reasons that they didn't want McCain to come to Washington they were afraid that the truth would start to come out about how the dems had a big hand in causing all of this to happen.
It's really amusing how democrats always keep attempting to rewrite history and the media allowed them to do it and and allowed them blame republicans for the financial crisis.Maybe the fact is Obama was afraid to come back to Washington was due to the fact the he has close ties to alot of the people who actually helped cause this problem in the 1st place and when McCain and President Bush attempted to stop the problem the dems and Obama had a hand in stopping them from doing so.The reason they didn't want McCain to come to Washington is because they are afraid he is going to point out that Obama and the democrats are at the root of this problem in front of all the national media where they can't just sweep it under the rug or ignore it anymore like they have been doing for so long.
