Mayor Reacts Angrily to Town Portrayal on GMA Train Trip

I guess the liberal crew aboard ABC's Good Morning America train trip felt comfortable in portraying small towns across the country as suffering from economic hard times which, of course, would be helpful for the Democrats in the upcoming elections in November. However, their pre-conceived script about economic hardship is being angrily challenged by the mayor of one of the towns they painted with their liberal brush. The mayor of Rome NY, James F. Brown is furious over the way his community was portrayed by GMA as you can see in this article in the Rome Daily Sentinel (emphasis mine):

Furious over the portrayal of Rome in Tuesday’s national broadcast of "Good Morning America," Mayor James F. Brown said he’ll never watch ABC — the television show’s network — again.

Cast and crew of the news program were at the Rome railroad station on Monday afternoon as part of a 50-state Whistle Stop ‘08 tour. More than 500 people turned out to meet the train and greet television personalities Robin Roberts, Diane Sawyer and Cris Cuomo.

Though the show’s under 2-minute segment on Rome began with praise of the city’s enthusiastic welcome, it went on to call Rome the "snow capital of the east," remind viewers that Griffiss Air Force Base closed 13 years ago and comment on a tough housing market, all with pre-shot video to match.

A pre-shot video to match the pre-conceived script of economic hardship to suit the Democrat agenda:

Mayor Brown, who is on vacation with is wife in Florida to celebrate their anniversary, called the Daily Sentinel late Tuesday to blast the segment. Before he even saw the Tuesday show, he said, he was getting calls and e-mails from people expressing total disappointment with what ABC ‘Good Morning America’ did for our area."

Brown said the negative portrayal of Rome was a calculated attack. "They had an agenda to come up here and do a negative-type story on upstate economics, on gas prices. The top management, I know their viewpoints," he said. "Their mission is to get Barack Obama elected. They focused on all the issues he’s focused on." First-term Illinois Sen. Barack Obama is the Democratic nominee for president. Brown is a Republican and has been mayor for five years.

The mayor of Rome is right on target here. A mission from GMA to get Obama elected. A portrayal of small town America showing economic progress just would not suit ABC's liberal agenda:

Brown said producers approached the city about a profile as a stop on the train trip across the northeast. He said it was pitched as a profile of a city with a renovated train station. So his chief of staff, Tammy Burkhart, welcomed show crew to town, showing them what Rome had to offer. Instead, he said, they brought an all together different objective.

But of course. You think the GMA producers would actually be upfront with their real agenda? So they pretend to pitch a happy face profile of Rome, only to undermine the town later with their gloom and doom report:

"All along they knew what they wanted to do. The plan from Day One was to come up here and take a look at the economic situation and focus on the negatives and not the positives." He continued, "Instead of being proactive and doing positive things, they focus on the negatives and the past," Brown said.

The segment noted how Rome was once known as the Copper City, with its wealth of wire production jobs, but that most of that industry is gone.

It said the base closed, but that, said the mayor, is old news that Rome has been working to overcome for over a decade.

Brown likened the portrayal of Rome to viewers nationwide to the damage done to Upstate New York when then-Gov. Eliot Spitzer compared its economy to that of Appalachia’s in early 2006.

So, Mayor Brown said he will avoid support and cooperation with what he called the "liberal media" that goes out of its way to support Obama. And ABC won’t get any more business from him, he said. "They couldn’t pay me to turn on ABC," he declared.

The Chamber of Commerce president echoed the mayor's sentiments about GMA:

Rome Area Chamber of Commerce President William K. Guglielmo said that what started as the city’s excitement to show itself off to the country turned into a misrepresentation of Rome on national television.

"We wanted to do our best to promote Rome in a positive light. I’m sure that was everybody’s intention." But after the afternoon of filming, "‘Good Morning America’ seemed to accentuate the negative and eliminate the positive, and there’s so much positive going on in our community. What was portrayed was so incomplete. It really turned me off."

Let this story serve as a warning for the other GMA train stops. ABC will burn you just like they burned Rome in order to fulfill their liberal agenda to portray economic disaster in small town America.

Tuesday I sent my

Tuesday I sent my bi-weekly letter to the editor of our local paper on just this subject on how the Dems and the media are slamming small towns. Thanks GMA for helping to make my point.

If pro is the opposite of con what is the opposite of progress? Congress!

Hey ABC, let the games begin!

God bless Mayor Brown and the citizens of Rome, NY for sticking it to these MSM morons!

There is no doubt from the beginning that ABC's agenda was the proliferation of the Osama Bama campaign and they'll resort to lies, innuendo, falsehoods and deceit to push their liberal agenda.

Let the games begin - and let's see how many more along this ABC American Appeasement Tour will say the same thing as Mayor Brown did - and stop watching their stinkin' network!

Our local station is an ABC

Our local station is an ABC affiliate. I watch the local news at 6 and that's it. I never watch the national news. I do watch ABC for college football and NASCAR but that is it. I gave up Desperate Housewives and Boston Legal years ago. A show called Ugly Betty does nothing for me. I'm doing my part to boycott them. I just can't give up my football and racing.

If pro is the opposite of con what is the opposite of progress? Congress!

Don't feel bad, I can't

Don't feel bad, I can't give up the football either!  Of course, that's all they get from me.

Journalism is the opium of the liberals

I agree BOYCOTT GMA!

No it is no surprise, but it does take a pair to out-right lie to the mayor on their intensions of stopping in their town to further the liberal agenda.  I hope this story catches on.  The REAL way to stick it to GMA is not to stop watching, but see which advertisers are broadcast during their show and send each a letter (or a petition) that as long as they are advertising with GMA (or ABC) that they will no longer purchase their products.  It is business afterall.  As a marketer, if I got this letter saying my customers will not purchase my product if we continued to advertise in a certain place, I would listen to my customers.  Anyway, that's what they should do!

98% of Americans don't watch now!

GMA's viewers the week of September 1, per mediabistro.com:TVNewser: 4,331,000.

GMA is spending alot of bucks to influence a little over 1% of the population. I wonder if GMA's advertisers are aware of how small their audience is?

Part of a package

Advertising on GMA must be free when you buy a package with ABC programming that people actually watch.

Meandering, here is how it works...

As a veteran of having spent 15 years in radio broadcasting as an announcer, producer/host of three different talk shows and having sold advertising for many of the stations I have worked at, it boils down to what I believe is referred to as CPI - cost per impression.

I have worked for #1 rated stations and stations whose ratings were in the dumper so I have been at both ends of the spectrum.

Any advertiser who is seriously wanting the biggest bang for their buck will look at a station's ratings - whether they be overall or such things as morning or afternoon drive time shows. When a station's ratings or programs begin to slide - Air America, Keith Olbermeister, Chrissy Matthews, et al - the cost that advertiser is paying in trying to their message to the viewer or listener rises dramatically.

This is why viewer boycotts of a particular broadcast media being targeted or their advertisers is not a bad idea. It sends a strong message that we're not going to put up with their left-wing, liberal agenda and/or buy products being adverstised until changes are made.

The less we watch these morons, the worse their ratings will get, the more their advertising costs will rise, and the more dissatisfied the advertiser becomes - it is a domino effect. I can only imagine what kind of ad packages the MSM has been trying to put together not only get new advertisers but keep current ones!

They must be giving away the farm - hmmm, but isn't that what liberals do best?

How blatant does it have to get

Before the Department of Justice investigates the media's obvious and blatant attempts at electioneering?

The mayor

Good for the mayor! People are fighting back. Obama's telling his commie buddies to fight, to "get in their face" when anyone disagrees with them. A jerk on the Dallas Mavs mocks the National Anthem and the Pledge, just as does Barry himself. But, guess what, the American people who beileve in this country can fight back too. Rush Limbaugh is fighting back. Barry Obama is a lefty, supported by the lying, hypocritcal lefties in the MSM. He and his friends are trying to make Nikita Kruschev's words come true. He said "We will bury you", meaning that America will corrupt itself from within. This is the aim of the left in America. Stop the apathy. Fight back. "Liberals" are sickening .

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

Indeed

I watched Kruschev hammer the podium with his shoe - and he did say we would be overtaken from within....BEWARE!  Obama does NOT have America's best interests at heart - and the mainstream media, both print and networks, is right in bed with his leftist thinking.

CONSERVATIVE HARD-WORKING, TAX-PAYING AMERICANS ARISE!!!  LET OUR VOICES BE HEARD IN UNISON - NO MORE!!  NO MORE!!!  NO MORE!!!!

Griffiss AFB

Griffiss was my first assignment (92-93) when I enlisted in the Air Force. I always thought Rome was a really cool little town with a lot to offer, business and tourist-wise. Utica is just down the road, but Rome has the small-town persona. It pi$$es me off that GMA would do that, but, it surely didn't surprise me at all.

I believe the base closed around 95 or 96. It was competing against Plattsburg AFB further north to stay open. They both ended up closing. Maybe that can all be blamed on then-gov Cuomo? The NY Thruway was paid off around then, but Cuomo obviously made the tolls permanent to keep on raking in the cash.

In addition to Cuomo

Let's not forget it was during these years that President Clinton cut defense spending and bases were being closed all over the place.

Isn't it interesting that GMA is bashing small towns just like the rest of the Dems are doing in their bashing of Sarah?  Gee, wonder what they're trying to accomplish?

Kudos to the mayor of Rome, NY.  Hopefully others will take notice and not let these idiots do the same to their towns.

"Liberals"

  "We will bury you"--Nikita Krushchev

The economic and social "meltdowns" in America are due directly to the vile philosopy known by various names--Socialism, Communism, Liberalism being the foremost. This "philosophy" presently has as it's "leader" a puppet named Barry Obama. However, obviously an inexperienced incompetent, he has his masters behind him. It appears that at least 50% of the voting public in America have been fooled by him and his cohorts. The MSM is their propaganda machine. Continued apathy toward this will be our downdfall.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

Your town may be next

Note to towns further down the line:

Begin issuing pitchforks, scythes and torches to the citizenry and be there to meet the Defamation Express.

And please, please, please, CLOSE ALL YOUR DINERS that day!

GREAT SUGGESTION!

However, GMA is probably lining up only Democrat-led towns to be featured from here on out.

It must be really something

It must be really something for these town leaders to see a national news program take a giant dump on them, thus scaring away any potential investors and businesses that would revitalize their communities.

These liberals will stop at nothing to push their agenda, even if it means sticking one to the little guy.  Cold, calculated, and ruthless.  And they do this all with a soft, warm smile of "compassion".

Congratulations

To the Mayor of Rome and the residents!

Keep on smiling as you continue to improve your area. There is no respect for our small towns in the minds of the Elitists, so you have each other's support to rely on.

I live in a Village of 700 in Ohio and one of our many strengths is that no matter what our personal opinions are, we work together to make things better.

Consider the opinions of the Elitists who tell us that we are bitter, angry, and clinging to our guns and Bibles, and be satisfied that you know the truth about our towns. It's too bad that their agendas don't allow them to experience the positive opportunities we present.

SMALL TOWNS OF AMERICA

YOU ARE AMERICA!!!!

I LOVE THIS TOUR!

Here at NB, you've been trying to get the word out about the liberal media bias that is taking over the MSM.  ABC has apparently decided to help you out by going to every state in the nation on a train to systematically piss off Americans accross the entire nation!

I may not be from New York, and as an average American I might take ABC's word that the economy in New York state is miserable, BUT, when they get to Kansas and do the same thing, it will be obvious to me that they don't know what they're talking about.

Most in the MSM simply report B.S. from the studio and know that most people will never get the real story.  ABC has decided to contridict itself in all 50 states (or all 57 if you're BHO).

Keep digging your own grave MSM.  You're almost there!

gotta have more cowbell baby!

Hey! Where's Hillary??

C'mon HIllary, you're still the senator from New York. Defend Rome! Tell GMA to stop this practice of bashing small towns for political .  . .

Sorry, I can't keep a straight face :-)

Mayor Brown....

I am with you.

But  you should of taken it one step further...

They came up there to paint gloom and doom...and they did using two things that happened because of liberal laws and policies. You should of somehow mentioned that...

Air force base closing..hmmm wasn't that a Clinton thing....yep I think so...

Wire plants closing...thats manufacturing in the metal industry right? Well didn't those jobs leave America because of Carter's policies and the enviramental agenda set forth by the Democrats?

GMA's whole point of going to that town is being caused by thier own ilk. The Dem party caused it but they are there trying to portray it as Bushe's issues.....when the cause of both items occured well before he was elected.
