Lou Dobbs Bashes Dana Bash Over Palin 'Carefully Scripted' Slam

  • Bookmark and Share

It seems that CNN reporter, Dana Bash, felt safe in reporting on Lou Dobbs Tonight a gratuitous slam against Sarah Palin that she is "carefully scripted." What she apparently didn't count on was Dobbs questioning her about Barack Obama carefully following his own teleprompter script. The result was that Bash was rendered nearly incomprehensible as she spouted gibberish defending her biased reporting while attempting to change the subject. Here are the comedy highlights from the September 15 CNN transcript (emphasis mine):

BASH: And what she has to say is still carefully scripted and her events tightly controlled. Even these home made looking yellow signs were distributed by the campaign.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

BASH (on-camera): Now Palin at her two rallies spent as much if not more time signing autographs furiously for voters as she did speaking to them and she stayed far away from those us in the press corps traveling with her and she also hasn't taken questions from voters yet as she's been campaigning but that is going to change this week. In fact, on Wednesday she's going to have a joint town hall meeting with her running mate John McCain in the state of Michigan. Lou.

DOBBS: I have to ask you, that's a terrific report. But you said she was tightly scripted and the event controlled. In what ways does that, for example, depart from the scripting and the control of say Senator McCain or Senator Obama?

BASH: Well, Senator Obama, that's an excellent point. In fact, we looked into this. Senator Obama used a teleprompter today as well as he has in the past. So in that sense it is not that different from candidates in general. But in terms of the difference from Senator McCain, it's probably best to look at how that difference is from Senator McCain say a month ago. Because basically about a month ago, he stopped doing press conferences.

In fact, he hasn't done one for those of us in the press corps for about a month. And he didn't do a town hall meeting until today. Again, in about a month. So his events have changed dramatically and Sarah Palin's events are basically mirroring the change in Senator McCain's events. Lou.

Note how Bash tries to switch the subject to holding press conferences. However, Dobbs does not let go as he brings it back to the topic of reading from a script:

DOBBS: So just to be clear so that I understand you, Senator Obama is on teleprompter. His events are also tightly controlled, is that correct?

The obviously uncomfortable Bash reluctantly confirms that Obama does indeed use a teleprompter but desperately tries to switch subjects again:

BASH: That's right. He has teleprompters at some of his events. I can tell you by way of comparison, though, and this is probably an important point as well. I looked into this as well, Joe Biden, Barack Obama's running mate, the very first day he was out campaigning alone, he had two press conferences with reporters and he does that quite often -

DOBBS: -- you brought up press conferences, when is the last time both of these candidates, McCain and I'm really getting to a point here, both Obama and McCain, when is the last time they each had a press conference and were accessible to the press?

BASH: I don't know the answer to that with regard to Obama, because I don't cover him on a day to day basis. But with regard to Senator McCain, August 13th in the state of Ohio. So, it was a month and a day now.

DOBBS: I think you'll find just about the same on both of these candidates and I think you'll find that we're watching the same amount of control and scripting on the part of both of these campaigns. Thank you very much. Dana Bash, appreciate it.

Thank you very much, Dana Bash, for entertaining us with your laughably uncomfortable attempts to change the discussion from candidates who use scripts.

Democrats do not like to

Democrats do not like to talk about Democrats. They will always switch to Republicans and do what they can to make them look bad. That way they feel better about themselves.

"Forget change, I want improvement!"

ROTFLOL!!!

Way to go Lou Dobbs! One of the few actual journalists on CNN.

You want change? Give me a dollar.

Dobbs

He is the only journalists on CNN !

Somewhere, Edward R. Murrow is crying...

The truly sad part is that it's not an evasive politician from whom Dobbs is trying to get a straight answer - it's a fellow journalist!

"There are some who use change to promote their careers, and then there are those who use their careers to promote change."
--Sarah Palin

Thanks Mr. Dobbs

If Bash ran this 'report' at any other time and with anyone else on the network, it would have been left alone.  Maybe allowed for a few extra shots at Palin for good measure.

Boy, Dobbs really f-d up Bash's groove by making her comment on The One.  GOOD!!  Wow, do I hate CNN.

The nerve of these candidates

How dare these candidates want to control their own message, instead of allowing reporters to control it!

Forgive me for beating an old drum of mine - nowhere is it written that a president or candidate for president is constitutionally required to answer to the press. The press has no constitutional standing. Reporters are citizens like anyone else, and have no special rights or privileges just because they are employed by a profit-seeking news outlet.

If John McCain holds a town-hall meeting and takes questions for an hour, but he doesn't submit to a media-controlled press conference, he hasn't hidden from anything.

If politicians like Obama and Edwards and Clinton won't go on FoxNews, who's ducking who? If they'll attend DailyKos conventions but they won't go to a Fox-sponsored debate, I don't want to hear a stinking word about McCain "ducking the press."

bash must feel like an idiot

actually been called out on a biased report, on air.  lou's statement "thanks for the report" was probably said with an extreme amount of self control.

bash trash

The bigger point is, there is no story to report here.  She gave us nothing we didn't already know.  Just useless drivel.

This is like reporting the candidates wear shoes.

What strikes me are these

What strikes me are these repetitive and gratuitous slams against Palin, masquerading as news. I've seen any number of "reports" about how "tightly scripted" Palin's appearances are. All campaign appearances are scripted. This isn't news. It's a partisan attack masquerading as "news".

McNotObama '08

Wasn't a big deal made just

Wasn't a big deal made just the other day that Obama is now using a telrprompter even at outdoor events, since the "lipstick on a pig" comment?

And how DARE a vice-presidential candidate actually reinforce the agenda of the top-of-the-ticket candidate!! Doesn't Palin realize that the point of the the VP canididate (according to the MSM, apparently) is to offset the Presidential candidate's views!!

I would love to see someone ask Sarah Palin a policy question and have her answer: That would be John McCain's call, and as his VP, it would be my duty to support his decision and do everything I can to help implement it.

mb, Good points all.

mb,

Good points all. Apparently the media now sees the Vice Presidency as a more important and crucial job than the Presidency.  Hmmmm, I wonder why? What could it be...

McNotObama '08

Yup

Also you probably notice them mention that Sara's speech was written for her. They never said that about the others. Her first speech and they all were saying it about Sara.Glad to see Lou rub Bashs nose in the silly game the msm is playing.

The divide

We are and will continue to be a divided nation as long as the MSM continues to be card-carrying members of the leftist, "liberal" Democratic Party. We no longer have a free press in America. Sad.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

Lou Dobbs/CNN

This is a perfect example of why Lou Dobbs is the ONLY reason to watch/listen to CNN when an anchor or commentator is on the screen.

Any other time =  Fox or Mute...

Am I Missing Something Here?

Please pardon me if this is a stupid question, but why do these people from the MSM support democrats so strongly?

Don't these people make six figure incomes and most likely fall into the group of "rich people" according to Senator Obama's standards and will have to pay higher taxes?

Maybe it's just me but I refuse to vote for any politician who openly advertises that they want to raise taxes for any purpose.

In it for the wrong reason...

They support democrats because the majority of them are liberal and they got into the industry because they want to "change the world" as opposed to what they are supposed to do, "report objectively" on issues, people and events.

Appropriate name...

"Bash"

CNN had to love that for a name.

Bash got Dobbed though. Gotta' love it.

Busted.

Busted.

Hey PJ...I am so tickled

Hey PJ...I am so tickled you caught this and have it posted here...I laughed myself silly yesterday evening watching Dobbs at work with Olive Oil, oops I mean Dana, it truly was priceless.

...thank you Lou Dobbs.

He has done a good job with these in-the-tank Obama reporters when they are on his show, especially Schneider...that was too much fun...along with others too.

The next Miss South Carolina?

Dobbs: Excellent response, Dana. Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can't locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?

Bash: I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, people out there in our nation don't have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as, uh, South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future, for our children.

I've been growing more fond

I've been growing more fond of Lou Dobbs recently.  I was afraid to admit it, but I feel so much better coming clean about this. It's always good to purge a little.

Lou, I think I love you....(I'm a fickle woman.  I'll have someone new by next week).  :o)

attaboy Lou!

Bash is just another in a long line of CNN O-Bots.  Ever notice she doesn't talk when Axelrod drinks water?

Dana, Darling, Here's your answer!

Dana Bash-Palin @ CNN:

You and your colleagues are in a tizzy because Governor Palin has the nerve not to speak to you media types, but she will do those silly town hall meetings.  This is circumventing your mission.

Here's why she may not want to speak to you.  She knows you will take whatever she says and run it through your MSM filter.  You will do whatever you can to distort and misrepresent what she says, say by selective editing, to present her as an ill-informed, gun-toting, radical right-wing idealogue who wants to impose her will on America and return us to the stone age.

Perhaps she has figured out that it's in her best interest to speak to the American voters directly.  That way they can hear for themselves exactly what she has to say, they can make their own judgments on her qualifications and background, and they won't have her message filtered and interpreted and commented on by you and others in the MSM to portray her as you want her to be perceived.  That, Dana, dear, is why she has better things to do than talk to you and other reporters.  You and your co-horts have but one mission at this point:  Destroy this woman and her reputation.  Why the hell would she allow you to do that when she can speak directly to the voters at townhall meetings?  The only reason your panties are in a knot is because you're not getting the chance to slam and discredit her.  I really feel your pain!

This is just beautiful.

This is just beautiful. These "journalist" nitwits love engaging in rhetorical ambushes with their political enemies, who they desperately attempt to trip up (it's a very easy to be the one asking the questions and not having to answer any).  And we get to see what happens when the tables are turned.  This is quite similar to when Newt flamed that idiot reporter several days ago.

I especially love it when this broad keeps sputtering "I've looked into it".  If she gets nailed like this again, she'll need to "look into" getting another job.

The Nerve of that Woman!!

What nerve!  How dare Governor Sarah Palin, candidate for vice-president, spend her campaigning time speaking directly to the voters and signing autographs instead of talking to the media.  How can she ever expect the media to edit, comment, interpret, misrepresent, and tell the public what to think about her if she won't talk to them?  Imagine, she speaks directly to the voters at the rallies and townhall meetings and doesn't make time for ABC, CBS, NBC, CNBC, and CNN, all highly-respected and non-partisan networks who have nothing but her best interests at heart.  Will she ever learn??????????

Actually, Dobbs says later

Actually, Dobbs says later in the script:

DOBBS: I think it's really important, and I'm asking you, I'm asking Dana Bash, all of our reporters, to start being straightforward about this. Because people need to know that these two candidates are not making themselves available to the national press corps and in a month, there are those who say we are not holding their feet to the fire, that we are not keeping them honest in any way.

So I think this changes the tenor a little bit than what is presented in this post.  Lou is being an equal-opportunity curmudgeon and may not necessarily be sticking up for Palin.  But I still admire his indication to report straight down the middle, as any authentic journalist should.  He seems, to me, to be a true, old-school professional.
