This public health triumph has arisen, Unicef officials said, partly from campaigns against measles, malaria and bottle-feeding, and partly from improvements in the economies of most of the world outside Africa.

The estimated drop, to 9.7 million deaths of children under 5, "is a historic moment," said Ann Veneman, Unicef's executive director, noting that it shows progress toward the United Nations Millennium Development Goal of cutting the rate of infant mortality in 1990 by two-thirds by 2015. "But there is no room for complacency. Most of these deaths are preventable, and the solutions are tried and tested."

Interestingly, Unicef officials said, the new estimate comes from household surveys done in 2005 or earlier, so they barely reflect the huge influx of money that has poured into third world health in the last few years from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; the Gates Foundation; and the Bush administration's twin programs to fight AIDS and malaria. For that reason, the next five-year survey should show even greater improvement, they said.

"We feel we're at a tipping point now," said Dr. Peter Salama, Unicef's chief medical officer. "In a few years' time, it will all translate into a very exciting drop."

I require that my new position will allow me to verbally contradict all that is right as I see it with my ultra liberal eyes. I also reserve the right to bash on my show any woman who has finally broken through the "glass ceiling" and therefore sees herself on the right side of politics and who is opposed to abortion, gun rights and beliving in a God.

Sorry Garofalo, but, I am a Republican because I DO believe in tolerance, and other ideas, and enjoy a good debate. Most liberals just shout anyone down who doesn't agree with them, and call them names like "small minded, petty, and mean"

The Republicans I personally know, are all college educated, have good jobs, know plenty of science and history, keep working to improve their lives, want to keep the government as far away as possible, expect a strong military to protect the USA, and are always proud to be an American in the United States.

That is why I am a Republican, and not a liberal like you Garofalo.

You and your ungrateful comrades don't deserve the uniquely American freedoms that Truly Decent people fought and died for.  Since you love socialist Cuba and Europe so much, it's beyond me why you don't go live there and enjoy your own version of utopia.  No wait, I do know why:  it's because Liberals are all talk, no action.  At least not positive, constructive action.
