WaPo Religion Blogger Attacks Sarah Palin's Religion

  • Bookmark and Share

A Washington Post "On Faith" religion blogger, Susan Brooks Thistlethwaite, is so affected by PDS (Palin Derangement Syndrome) that she has launched a hate-filled screed against Palin's religion. This might seem an uncharacteristic thing for an ordained minister to do but not when you find out a bit more about Our Miss Brooks. Her bio on the Washington Post site describes Thistlethwaite's area of expertise as "contextual theologies of liberation." Liberation theology which is another way of saying Marxism wrapped in a phony religious wrapper to make it seem more palatable. Thistlethwaite launches a distinctly un-Christian snarky attack upon Palin right from the start of her blog (emphasis mine):

"Wives be subject to your husbands, as unto the Lord." So says the Christian scriptures in Ephesians, 5:22. What I would like to know, first of all, is who is going to have the final authority as Vice-President if Sarah Palin is elected, Palin or her husband? In fact, I think the first order of business with Palin is to ask her to give the same kind of speech that was demanded of John F. Kennedy re his Catholicism. Kennedy said he would obey the Constitution over the Pope. Will Palin obey the Constitution over her husband?

You see where Thistlewaite is coming from? Of course, Brooks would never think of asking that question of Nancy Pelosi...or Hillary. Brooks continues plummeting into the depths with a direct attack on Palin's religion:

Palin, the presumptive Republican vice-presidential candidate, belongs to an Assemblies of God, the largest Pentecostal denomination in the world. Members of the Assemblies of God believe that the Bible in its entirety is verbally inspired by God, is the revelation of God to humanity and is "the infallible, authoritative rule of faith and conduct." That means, in a literal reading of scripture, that the authority in the Palin family rests with her husband.

The "evangelical base" who are reported to be so "energized" by Palin's nomination as vice-president need to ante up here. Do they believe in the literal word of scripture or not? And if they believe in the literal word of scripture, then they need to demand that the we vet not only Sarah Palin, but more importantly, her husband, Todd Palin. Todd, by the way, works for British Petroleum.

And Susan Brooks Thistlethwaite, by the way, works for the leftwing Center For American Progress. Thistlewaite continues her highly partisan attack with an assault upon all those who don't buy into the credo of Global Warming Alarmism:

But the "wives be subject to your husbands" problem is far from my only concern with Palin as vice-president. She is even to the right of many Evangelical Christians on global warming. Palin does not believe (and believe is the operative word here, since facts do not seem to enter in to her judgment) that global warming is caused by human activity.

...This fundamentalist position on the environment is closely related to Palin's contempt for science and her advocacy of the teaching of creationism alongside traditional science. In a televised debate in 2006, Palin said she supported teaching both creationism and evolution in public schools. Creationism, as is well-known, refers to the religious belief that the world as we see it today, human life, the earth and indeed the entire universe, was created by God in its current form. It is the religiously-motivated rejection of the science of evolution.

Thistlethwaite is hardly finished with her PDS rage against Palin:

Palin, in addressing students graduating from a program at her home church, Wasilla Assembly of God, in June of this year, described the war in Iraq in messianic terms. Iraq is a way in which the United States was carrying out the will of God, according to Palin. She exhorted the graduates, "Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is from God...That's what we have to make sure that we're praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan."

Astonishingly, God is also to be exhorted, according to Palin, in order to get a $30 billion dollar national gas pipeline built that she wanted for Alaska. "I think God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that," she said. She has strongly promoted oil and natural gas resource development in Alaska, including opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuse (ANWR) to drilling.

Gasp! Palin has effectively broke through a deadlock of many years and arranged for a $30 billion "national" gas pipeline to be built. And how dare she promote oil and natural gas resource development at a time when our nation desperately needs it. Thistlethwaite has wandered far afield from matters of religion to politics but that is what really interests her in the first place.

Think even a liberation theology type would hesitate to attack Sarah Palin's family at least for the sake of appearances? Not Thistelthwaite. Feel the hate:

She is, as a Christian conservative/fundamentalist, anti-abortion, even in the case of rape or incest, though supporting abortion when the life of the mother is at stake. She says she is a "firm supporter of abstinence-only education in schools," according to CNN in 2006. When running for governor, she wrote, "Yes, the explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support," in response to a questionnaire by the Eagle Forum Alaska. Abstinence-only programs have been shown to be ineffective in preventing teen pregnancy, a fact that Palin has just proven in her own family and the unmarried pregnancy of her 17-year old daughter.

Yes, yes, I know Barack Obama has said that families should be off limits in the campaign, but I don't think this is an issue just of Palin's personal life and that of her family. It stands to reason that people should be asked to justify their policy positions, such as abstinence-only sex education, and it stands to reason that people should be asked whether they learn from experience.

Thisthlethwaite concludes with a tirade over the thought of Sarah Palin as one day becoming president. Something the United Church of Christ minister simply cannot tolerate:

Now look. Do you really want this again in the White House? Given John McCain's age and health, we have to take Sarah Palin very seriously not only as a vice-president, but also as a possible president. And this is true of any vice-president, in truth.

I can tell you flat out I don't want somebody else in the White House who mouths conservative Christian views, takes us into faith-based wars, will cave in to the oil lobbies and who does not even understand modern science.

Really, women have achieved true equality when I can honestly say there's no way I could support this person for leadership of our country.

Note to Susan Brooks Thistlethwaite: You just made the job of Obama's evangelical outreach Religious Affairs Adviser, Shaun "Jesus Was An Illegal Alien" Casey, quite a bit harder in his effort to fool Christians into supporting the Lightworker.

Ah the old Ephesians

Ah the old Ephesians arguement...does it ever occur to these people to read the rest of the passage in the Bible...you know the part where it says husbands should love their wives like Jesus loved the church and gave himself over for her. That husbands should love their wives like they love their own body. Oh I forgot it would completely debunk their argument.

"There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we can not resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary." -Sister Lucia

it is so painful to watch

husbands are the ultimate servants of the household - like Jesus towards the whole world - bottom of the pyramid, not the top, feet-washers - sounds like a feminazi's dream to me
it is so painful to watch liberals try and use the Bible
it's exactly like jackass the movie

Journalism is the opium of the liberals

This is ridiculous. Palin

This is ridiculous.

Palin can simultaneously be submissive to her husband in the affairs of the household and in spiritual matters while being the Vice President of the United States.

Maybe she's never heard of Britain's Queen Victoria, who doubtless was much more theologically conservative than Anglicans and other predominantly liberal Christian denominations today.

Stick a fork in the chosen One folks

this thing is over.  The libs are so desperate to find something...anything to stop Palin's rise.  It makes them look pathetic.

I look for Biden to remove himself and Hitlery to step up as the only way they have to help stem Palinmania.  Obama is done otherwise!

You are correct. The left has a bad case of nerves right now because Sarah Palin has taken the wheels off their ride to the White House. Thank God for strong competent women!

and allow Hillary to take over as VP nominee this move would make Obama look worse showing that he cannot make good descisions. Has that ever been attempted before?

"9 out of 10 doctors agree that flag burning is the number one killer of liberals."

Indeed

What makes me laugh about this? In 1992, 1996, 2000 and 2004 -- every single presidential election was actually between (dare I say it?) the presidential candidates. Although comments were made about each vice-presidential candidate, the bottom line was -- the media libeled and slandered the presidential candidate.

This year, it's about the MSM libeling and slandering the vice-presidential candidate on the Republican ticket. If this is what they are reduced to, they are going to ensure themselves a bucket full of fail.

Abstienence only ...

Abstinence only programs DO work .... when people actually apply the program.

On the other hand, even if one still goes completely by the book in "sex-ed" programs, a teen can still get pregnant, can still get an STD, and be emotionally scarred by having sex.

Sorry ... but Brooks is a buffoon.

Obama: My job is above my pay grade

Yet another atheist masquerading as a 'minister'

Apparently Susan Brooks Thistlethwaite believes that she is the sole arbiter of what portions of the Bible to beleive and what portions are to be ignored. And it's appaently based on her own underlying ideology of liberalism and pro-abortion theology. Satan finds many useful fools to help him in is cause to confuse and trick us into making the wrong decisions.

Abstinence is the only 100% guarenteed method of avoiding pregnancy. Nothing else even comes close. The problem arrises when teenagers choose to ignore their teaching and engage in sex anyway. You see Abstinence education strives to prevent teens from engaging in sexual relations before they are psychologically and emotionally ready for it and understand that it is supposed to be a special relationship between a husband and wife. The other types of 'sex education' strive only to teach teens how to engage in sex and then to lower the preganancy rate.
Abstinence only programs are far better at preventing teen sexual activity, whereas other programs only have better statistics at preventing pregnancies, not the underlying behavior that is the problem.

Susan Brooks Thistlethwaite's ideas are to teach children to have sex, ask them to remember to use a condom and then if that doesn't work, to kill the baby.

Far better to have alot of unwed teen mothers than 40 million dead babies. Because in Susan Brooks Thistlethwaite's world, serial abortion is used as a form of birth control and that is an abomination that even she cannot ignore.

"That means, in a literal

"That means, in a literal reading of scripture, that the authority in the Palin family rests with her husband."

Yep, that is indeed what the scripture means.  Note that it means that  this authority exists within the marriage.  In other words, in any two person partnership there can be no majority vote, so God settled the issue, in case of a tie the man has the authority.  But that is only half the answer and the entire answer has to be heard to understand the context.  The rest of the answer lies in the next verse, "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her."  In other words, husbands, choose with the good of your wife as your utmost objective.

The way we apply this in our marraige is as follows:  When Ruth and I cannot reach agreement, which is incredibly rare, then my decision stands.  But my decision must be grounded in lifting Ruth up or else it is not a godly one.  So, the onus is on me to be faithful and loving to my wife.  In all the years of our marriage this has never led to any lasting conflict, our biggest conflicts have come when one or the other has violated this guidance and sought our own selfish needs over the other, in fact.

But as I said before, this authority only lies within our marriage.  I exercise no authority over Ruth with regards to her professional life (indeed, she has a highly technical job and I have no expertise in it).  In the same way, Palin's husband would have no authority over Gov. Palin's job.  His godly authority ends at the family boundary.

Course these are only my thoughts, I don't have the understanding of the scriptures the way a "religion blogger" (or a "community organizer", for that matter) does.

Well said, RhB.

How sad is it that a "theologian" can’t, or is unwilling to, make that distinction?

Straw Man Argument

I guess Hillary Clinton's "You get two for the price of one" only applies to Democrat couples.

It must be a fun job to sit around like Susan Brooks Thistlethwaite does and create straw man arguments.

Christianity has its roots in Judaism.  When things in the Bible are interpreted, they must be interpreted through a lens of Judaic thought.

As I understand it, the Scripture in Ephesians is generally believed to apply to the running of the household and more specifically toward raising children.  The point being that if children are expected to "honor their father and mother," then parents shouldn't be fighting over the raising of their children.  The wife should submit to the husband's judgment concerning discipline and education of the child.

I would also like to point out that in the line of Israel's judges, there was a married woman named Deborah, who was a highly respected leader.

What a toad?

Ephesians scripture is about a wife being submissive to her husband and it continues...husbands are to love their wife as Christ loved the Church.

This text is obviously a reference to the family unit. Furthermore, Kennedy was running for POTUS and needed to clarify that his job is the leader of the US and he cannot be subject to another earthly authority.

Finally, this blogger might as well question EVERY Christian woman about whether their husbands tell them what to do in the workplace as well.

What a dope! How does one get to write about a topic for which they are TOTALLY clueless. [ Blonde, you might offer to sell her a clue as well]

If conservatives are RIGHT, then liberals must be WRONG.

Age matters not

"Given John McCain's age and health, we have to take Sarah Palin very seriously not only as a vice-president, but also as a possible president."

In truth, age matters not.

"And Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated."

Deuteronomy ch. XXXIV, v. 7

Obama: My job is above my pay grade

isn't BO a Christian also?

The hypocrisy is unbelievable, well maybe not considering the source. How can you question Palin's religion without questioning Obama's?  are they both not evangelical Christians?

BO: Evangelical?

BO is not an Evangelical. He would qualify more as a member of a "Main Line Denomination" (United Church of Christ) but actually he has been in a "Black Liberation Theology" church which should be a different category. If he was a black Evangelical he would tend towards being... a PENTACOSTAL :-) (also a Baptist). I do not know if African Methodist Episcopal (AME) or African Methodist Episcopal Zion (AME Zion) would consider themselves "Evangelical".

Also, he is currently without a church as far as I know which is something an Evangelical LEADER would address.

BTW: the funny/sad thing about them attacking the left attacking Pentacostals is  they are attacking a significant portion of the Black church-going community. The Assemblies of God have their roots in the Azusa Street Revival under the leadership of William Seymor, an African-American. And Azusa street was attacked by The Los Angeles Times for it's wierd behavior... and the mixing of races.

http://en.wikipedia....

And...

Barak made some comment about not "falling out..." in his worship experience which would imply being "slain in the spirit"... a characteristic of pentacostalism. I am not sure if Trinity UCC has a tradition of Assemblies of God ("AG") Pentacostalism or if there is a substantial portionof the congregation that has that in their background. But if he does, this media feeding frenzy shold be applied to him as well...

The libs are playing both

The libs are playing both sides of the coin.

What's great about this is the true intent of the Scripture will now be revealed to those that have misinterpreted it.

When done correctly, there is no greater institution than marriage. The Palin's will have no issue balancing a VP office and the relationship of a husband and wife because she is a Proverbs 31 woman.

You trying to say Jesus Christ can't hit a curveball?

Thistlewaite is a reason

Thistlewaite is a reason why I'm glad I'm Catholic and why I'd choose to be a Southern Baptist if I absolutely had to be any sort of Protestant.  Barf.

Susan Brooks Thistlethwaite

Susan Brooks Thistlethwaite is to be commended not condemned. This is perhaps the first time she's ever taken up the Bible to actually read it. Though her motives were dubious, we must agree with the apostle Paul that "whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached, and I therein do rejoice." It is quite possible that the Word will simmer in her soul and one day cause her to repent and receive the salvation of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Hillary & Bill.

"What I would like to know, first of all, is who is going to have the final authority as Vice-President if Sarah Palin is elected, Palin or her husband?'"

Didn't we have this problem when Bill was in office?  Who was to be the final authority, Gore or Hillary?

That's a ridiculous interpretation of Ephesians 5:22

I have a Bachelor's degree in Christian Theology from a rigidly
conservative (now defunct) Bible College, and yet I've never heard such
a ridiculous interpretation of Ephesians 5:22.

The context of that passage is the marriage. It doesn't include anything outside the marriage.

Let me put it in context: a pastor hires a woman, who's family
attends the church, to work in the church office. Does anyone
think that the pastor would then turn around and let her husband tell
her what to do and not to do in her responsibilities at work?

Religion

There is nothing Christian about this person.
