The latest celebrity to join in the group slamming of Sarah Palin is none other than Matt Damon as you can see in this Associated Press video which reeks of condescension. Damon, who has yet to attain public office condescendingly mocks Palin's credentials (emphasis mine):
I think there is a really good chance that Sarah Palin could president. And I think that's a really scary thing because I don't know anything about her. I don't think in eight weeks I'm going to know anything about her. I know that she was a mayor of a really, really small town. And she's governor of Alaska for less than two years. I just don't understand... I think the pick was made for political purposes but in terms of governance it's a disaster.
Apparently Damon must suffer from a severe reading disability because information about Palin is all over the Web. But does Damon really care about Palin's background? No, because his liberal mind is already made up. Damon then goes on to raise the "specter" of a Palin presidency:
Story Continues Below Ad ↓You do the actuary tables and there's a one out of three chance, if not more, that McCain doesn't survive his first term and it will be President Palin. And it really...we were talking about it earlier...it's like a really bad Disney movie. The hockey mom. "I'm just a hockey mom from Alaska." And she's the president. And it's like she's facing down Vladimir Putin and using the folksy stuff she learned at the hockey rink. It's absurd. It's totally absurd. And I don't understand why more people aren't talking about how absurd it is. It's a really terrifying possibility. The fact that we've gotten this far and we're that close to this being a reality is crazy, crazy.
Damon's condescension continues as he ponders the possibility of the "hockey mom" holding the nuclear codes:
I need to know if she really thinks dinosaurs were here 4000 years ago, that's an important...I want to know that. I really do. Because she's going to have the nuclear codes. I want to know if she thinks dinosaurs were here 4000 years ago. Or if she banned books or tried to ban books. We can't have that.
This from a representative of Shirley McLaine's Hollywood where the idea of a 30,000 year old reincarnated being dispensing investment advice to gullible celebrities is accepted with little skepticism.

docb...quit lying
September 10, 2008 - 12:07 ET by BlondeYou really ought to check out your facts before you slander John McCain like that.
From the official USS Forrestal site:
Forrestal arrived on Yankee Station on July 25 and immediately began combat operations, her aircraft flying 150 sorties during the next 4 days, without the loss of a single aircraft. At 10:52 A.M. on July 29, the second launch was being readied when a Zuni rocket accidentally fired from an F-4 Phantom parked on the starboard side of the flight deck aft of the island. The missile streaked across the deck into a 400 gallon belly fuel tank on a parked A-4D Skyhawk. The ruptured tank spew highly flammable JP-5 fuel onto the deck which ignited spreading flames over the flight deck under other fully loaded aircraft ready for launch. The ensuing fire caused ordinance to explode and other rockets to ignite. Spread by the wind, the flames engulfed the aft end of the stricken ship turning the flight deck into a blazing inferno.. Berthing spaces immediately below the flight deck became death traps for fifty men, while other crewmen were blown overboard by the explosion.
I've highlighted the pertinent point for you, docb, because you are an obvious Kook-Aid drinker.
So, what kind of plane did John McCain fly? That's right, the A-4 Skyhawk. Which plane was hit by the loose missile? Hmmm?
You've been caught in an out-and-out lie. Deal with it.

Poor liberal liars
September 10, 2008 - 14:04 ET by CobraManThey're not just liars; they're POOR liars, as they don't even understand what they're talking about. This lie is a perfect example.
The liberals are claiming that McCain "over primed" his engine and that this caused a backfire which, in turn, caused the explosion, but the idiots don't even understand how a jet turbine engine works. You can only over-prime a piston engine, not a jet turbine engine.
For those who don’t understand how a jet turbine engine operates, it's impossible to over-prime a jet turbine engine as they are NOT primed. The igniters for a jet turbine engine begin to spark as soon as a jet turbine engine starts to spin, and all jet turbine engines are spun up to 10 percent of it's rated speed BEFOR any fuel is released into the combustion chamber. Its impossible to inject fuel into a jet turbine engine prior to spin-up, the fuel control system won't allow it. I learned that in the second week of my training as a Cobra mechanic, and aircraft that also uses a jet turbine engine.
These people REALLY need to do a little research before making assertions about subject that they know nothing about.

Matt Damon caused the Forrestal tragedy
September 10, 2008 - 18:17 ET byOK, that's not exactly true. It's just my way of trying to bring the discussion back to the subject at hand: bashing Matt Damon.
Well actually, I'll add my say on the Forrestal disaster. I too have seen the footage of this, and it is truly amazing. You realize McCain is sitting in the cockpit of the jet surrounded by fire (flames within feet all around McCain) and explosions, chaos and horror that make you think that surely his jet is going to turn very lethal for McCain and others. Yet miraculously he survived. I couldn't help but think that God had great plans for McCain. John McCain went on to become a pretty good United States Senator. God works in mysterious ways and maybe that's all God had in mind. Maybe he/she will let the voters decide in Nov. if there's more in store for McCain.

September 10, 2008 - 12:20 ET by Captain KirockI've seen this slander on McCain on other sites as well. Liberals are always trying to rewrite history to fit their current narrative, a la the Ministry of Truth in 1984.
If I remember correctly...
September 10, 2008 - 12:44 ET by 3strikesfrom my Navy training. There are 4 classes of fires, A, B, C, and D. Normally, fire from JP-5 fuel would be classified as a class B fire. JP-5 does not burn hot enough to burn metal. It can warp it, or melt it down, but it can't catch it on fire. The fire from the burning jets was a class D fire. This is when the metal literally catches on fire. The only way for a ship to put out such a fire is to throw the jet overboard. Even then, the metal will continue burning underwater, until the water draws off enough heat and the metal's temperature drops below its flash point.
The only things on a ship that can cause a class D fire are missiles. Flight Deck crews even have special fire fighting suits (along with welder's masks) designed to withstand the higher temperatures involved in a class D fire.
If I remember the videos clearly, the Forrestal crew were forced to throw the jets overboard due to the fires being class D fires.
3strikes
September 10, 2008 - 13:03 ET by BlondeI'm sure recollection about the classification of shipboard fires is spot-on.
I have seen the video of the Forrestal fire many times. They were pushing jets off the deck left and right.
This was a huge tragedy. Many brave men gave their lives to save their shipmates and their ship that day.
Thank you for your service.

How about...
September 10, 2008 - 12:27 ET by 3strikesdoing a little research for yourself instead of taking far left blog talking points.
As a former Navy man, I remember watching the Forrestal fire video a number of times as part of Damage control and readiness training. In the video you can clearly see a misfired rocket slamming into a jet very close to John McCain's.
Your attempt to smear McCain with an unsubstantiated charge of causing the Forrestal fire is completely irresponsible. As far as the Keating 5 go, everything I've found says that Sen. McCain and Sen Glenn (a Democrat), had minimal involvement in the scandal and had simply shown poor judgement. Could the verdict have been light since both men were considered National heroes? That's always a possibility, but at the same time it didn't help Duke Cunningham. Nor does it account for McCain doing everything he can to ensure that sort of thing doesn't happen again... i.e. placing all of his financial holdings into blind trusts, pushing Campaign finance reform. The Keating 5 to me sounds more like a situation where John McCain was caught with his pants down, instead of being caught red handed.
Doesn't support Veterans? Please explain how.
Running mate not talking to the press? She's been on the scene for less than 2 weeks, one of those weeks being Convention week, and Chris Wallace has an entire 2 days with her, no holds barred. Why don't you ask the media to give any kind of scrutiny to Obama, instead of crying about Gov Palin's lack of interviews in a 2 week period.
Lying?! Please substantiate that charge. What evidence do you have?
Like I said before, try stepping away from the liberal kook blogs and do some of your own research and thinking.

What was he doing in (whatever country he lived in for years)? What is his REAL relationship with Bill Ayers, Jeremiah Wright and Tony Rezko? We don't know. I hope this is not true of Matt Damon. We do not need another Hollywood celebrity that cannot understand objective realities. Muslims really did blow up the World Trade Center with fuel heavy planes. September 10, 2008 - 11:45 ET by KC MulvilleAccording to Damon, Sara Palin is going to face down Putin using lessons she learned at the "hockey rink." And that's "absurd, totally absurd."
Having used such a disingenuous, and obviously silly argument, Damon is hardly in any position to condescend to a state governor. Like George Clooney, Damon is an entertaining and interesting actor, who should stick to his day job.
And may I say, John McCain's selection of Sara Palin has unleashed displays of liberal and Hollywood illogic that are unprecedented. This is their standard way of thinking. They have so many unexamined assumptions that it forms a subconscious prejudice, a blindness from which they have no escape. The most obvious of all is that a "real" woman is a liberal feminist abortionist. They just can't compute a conservative woman. They're reacting like a bad Star Trek episode where the computer frazzles and catches fire.

September 10, 2008 - 12:03 ET by JasonCI always want to give celebrities, especially somewhat talented ones, the benefit of the doubt on things like this. I believe that the disdain that is held for them when they speak out politically, generally comes from the fact that they are so much constructs of public imagination. That we just can't see them as real people, only as ciphers on ET and in the movies. And of course, we begrudge that they have a built-in audience, that if they do have an opinion, it will be heard by more people than we could ever get to listen to us. So many reasons to feel pandered to and offended that people are more interested in the fact that she hunts and likes mooseburgers and has a darling family than in her politics. Or worse, transmuting those aforementioned, aggressively irrelevant, traits into her politics.
But 'not knowing' anything about her, and instead just believing every idle rumor that comes your way is not the way to lay out your misgivings, Matt.

One of the strangest mystifications that has persisted in post-Bush, consumer-driven presidential politics is this idea that we should elect a president (or Veep) who is "just like us/me." It wasn't long ago that we wanted to elect presidents who were exceptional in some way beyond their ability to put on a blue-collar facade. My head has never hit my desk with such force as it did Friday when a poster suggested that McCain/Palin will win because "America prefers apple pie and cool whip to arugula." While this might be true, the fact that its veracity was being characterized as good and right does not speak well of the voting public.

The notion that someone needs mythical and mystical qualities to adequately serve as president is farcical. What he needs is proper values and the ability to adequately staff.
Liberals always have a peculiar notion that the president does all, is all , and serves as the singular font of all knowledge is absurd. Conservatives have more realistic goals - witness the Republican genius for reliable staff work.

I don't know where you get your ideas, but you're wrong as that’s ALWAYS been true. There is nothing "post-Bush" or "consumer-driven" about it.
People choose the leaders who are most like them because those leaders most likely share the same values and ideals as the voters who elect them. The electorate knows that this leader will make policies and decisions that are in the best interest of the people who elected them and not just to pad their resume.
I don't know about you, but I'm not going to vote for a candidate that doesn't share my values and ideals simply because they have a more impressive resume. History has shown us time and time again that the best President's share the same values and the same ideals as the majority of Americans.
President Reagan, for example wasn't voted into office simply because he made a few movies, he was voted into office because he shared similar ideals and values as the voters.
The same is true of Kennedy. JFK wasn't voted into office because he was the Capitan of PT-109; he was voted into office because he shared the same values and ideals as the citizens who elected him.

The problem
September 10, 2008 - 17:04 ET by doug1950lies in that the left is not looking into who Sarah Palin is, they are just trying to find some dirt so they can discredit her. For all her good points they have tried unsuccessfully to somehow turn every positive (at least to conservatives) into a negative. The things she stands for, believes in are the same things conservatives stand for and believe in. The left doesn't want to know anything about her and are too lazy to look for themselves, they would just rather let the MSM do all their looking and research for them and then regurgitate it back on the internet without checking for validity. The MSM has an agenda and are not to be trusted in their assessements of anyone, left or right. They are no longer capable of telling the truth and make no pretense about it. Journalism is dead and is now exposed and naked. They don't report the news, they decide what is news and how they want to report it to support their goals. That is why they are all going bankrupt and have lost all credibility. Today, most quasi-intelligent people do their own research and cross check their sources.
Better Chance of Obama Kicking the Bucket
September 10, 2008 - 12:12 ET by Gat New YorkYou do the actuary tables and there's a one out of three chance, if not more, that McCain doesn't survive his first term and it will be President Palin.
Not only does he have a reading disability as you indicated, he probably also failed statistics.
McCain has his mother's genes and she is a vibrant 96 years old.
Obama, on the other hand, was a chain smoker and his mother died of cancer when she was only 53. Obama is 48.
Obama's Mortality

Woohoo, 16 more years, 16 more years!!!
September 10, 2008 - 14:26 ET by Hunter12I don't think Matt knows how to read a actuarial table. Life expectancy is not some set number. If you make it to a certain age, you're apt to live past the average. For some white male who has reached 65, their life expectancy is 17.2 years. If that man makes it until 75, they can expect to live another 10.8 years. Since McCain is 71, he should fall somewhere around another 12 to 15 years of life expectancy. Unless we decide he's done such a fine job and abolish that ammendment and give him 12 or 16 years in office, McCain should be around long enough to groom Sarah for her 8 years as president. The life expectancy of an African-American male is a lot less than that of a white male, especially when that individual smokes, so if Matt is worried about the elected president dying in office, we should promise to do all we can and put McCain in place, so all Matt has to worry about is box office. If he doesn't want to alienate about half the country, he should keep his mouth shut, or that may be a much bigger worry.

Mat, you don’t understand actuarial tables at all, do you? That death probability you cite is for surviving a single year, not four, and that probability increases only slightly for year that someone is alive.
Let’s take a look at a real actuarial table, shall we?
At age 71, a healthy male (like McCain) has a Death Probability, the probability of dying within one year, of 0.030131 and can be expected to live an additional 12.64 years, which over 3 times the length of a Presidential term, so McCain’s risk of dying in office is actually very low, especially if you factor in the remarkable heath care that any President would receive while in office.
So, Matt, it looks like your fears are unfounded. But, then again, you’re a liberal so being unfounded is to expected.

September 11, 2008 - 03:02 ET by KimberlyI disagree. I think Gov. Palin has done an outstanding job in speeches, interviews, on the stump, etc. of reminding the voters that this is a Presidential election, and the President they should elect is Sen. John McCain. Sen. McCain also seems to get that this is an election between himself and Sen. Obama, and that their VP choices are just that--the Vice President, not the President.
OTOH, both Sens. Obama and Biden are simply obsessed with Palin and can't stop trying to get under her skin, deride her experience, mock her life history, and more. As inept as Obama has been since April (when Hillary refused to step aside for the coronation of Emperor Obama and actually forced him to work for what wins he managed to get the rest of the way out), at least he tended to remember who he was running against--Hillary and McCain. Now? The McCain/Palin ticket is costing him polling points and likely voters, and we all know Dems live and die by polls. That bounce is largely due to Gov. Palin's pick, so instead of remembering who he's running against (McCain) he obsesses over the agent of change that's changing his chances of winning in a bad way and goes after that instead.
McCain/Palin are running on issues and using those issues to contrast themselves opposite their opponents. What are Obama/Biden doing? Making verbal gaffes while trying to get some dirt/negative image/whatever on Palin. It's truly sad. I've never seen a major political party's ticket descend into chaos so fast.

This statement is absolutely comical, and sad at the same time. First, there is the ego involved, the idea that it is a scary thing that Palin could be president because Matt Damon doesn't know anything about her. So now the qualifications of our presdents are dependent upon what Matt Damon knows about them? Also, as someone else posted, one would think that Matt Damon knows little or nothing about any of the candidates for office. (I'd like to know how Damon would do on a basic civics test; I bet it wouldn't be pretty.) Finally, how much meaning does it have when a died in the wool Democrat like Damon bad mouths the Republican V.P. candidate in this fashion, which seems to suggest that he would have been open-minded about another McCain choice. If McCain picked anybody else, Damon would be just as "scared" about that person, for some other idiotic reason. So his comments are complete empty drivel.

Finally, her selection was not merely political, it was also sexist. Why do you think that the first words out of her mouth was that "glass ceiling" mess? Imagine, a vice presidential candidate, nakedly appealing for help to advance, not as the best candidate, but as a woman.
The Republicans, put her out front with the most provocative lies and insults, but then warned Barack not to strike back cause - she's a woman . . .

September 10, 2008 - 16:56 ET by BDWhen I was a kid I saw a player who was roughly the same height as the crossbar on the goal checked into it at great force by a player who was later penalized for charging.
He pinwheeled into the net, and his skates literally embedded themselves in the top of the net with him coming to rest hooked at the ankles up side down.
He hung upside down unconscious for a minute until his team mates untangled him and hauled him off ice.
I would LOVE to see that replayed with Putin.
And another actor...

Damon thinks McCain's gonna die!!
September 10, 2008 - 15:44 ET by tcbflashHey Matt I wonder if anyone in those "small towns" has paid to see one of your stupid movies. Listen to this guy. What a snob. What's wrong with small towns> And as for the dinosaur remarks, they we're competely made up. Go here: http://unbearablebobness.typepad.com/my_weblog/2008/08/governor-sarah-palin-quotes.html
Boycot this snobby, overrated piece of liberal trash. I hate Matt Damon.

So Matt thinks McCain will die in office and leave us with Palin. Well, actual stats would probably prove just the opposite. McCain's mother I believe is over 95 and still going strong and very, very alert. Anyone catch her at the convention...very spry. So the odds are definitely in his favor.... Matt looks so old and worn in that clip...must be bad genes....He's 'spent' before 50........ sad.

Actuarial tables
September 11, 2008 - 12:21 ET by pumapurrActuarial tables include heavy smokers, alcoholics, drug addicts, the morbidly obese, clinically depressed, etc., and lots of people who have never taken care of themselves.
McCain on the other hand, has had and will continue to have the best preventive medical care in the world.
Invoking those tables is about as sensible as saying Matt Damon is very likely to die while performing real work or serving his country.

Leftist Matt Damon Producing Another Leftist Documentary
September 11, 2008 - 21:19 ET by Rush FanThe Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Matt Damon is producing a documentary that is an adaption of Historian Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States", and stars Matt Damon and the Right-wing Conservative Sean Penn.
It is U.S. history from the usual perspective of the left. As The Hollywood Reporter states:
"The book, first published in 1980, presents American history through a bottoms up approach, focusing on voices seldom heard in history books such as defiant Indians, mutinous soldiers, striking workers, and rebellious women."
