It wasn't that long ago that the left considered this November's election a mere formality on the road to Barack Obama's coronation as president. They loved posting poll after poll showing Obama winning by huge margins. Oh, how they gloated about the massive loss John McCain was sure to suffer. Well, the polls have changed and now the latest USA Today/Gallup poll shows quite a different result:
WASHINGTON — The Republican National Convention has given John McCain and his party a significant boost, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll taken over the weekend shows, as running mate Sarah Palin helps close an "enthusiasm gap" that has dogged the GOP all year.
McCain leads Democrat Barack Obama by 50%-46% among registered voters, the Republican's biggest advantage since January and a turnaround from the USA TODAY poll taken just before the convention opened in St. Paul. Then, he lagged by 7 percentage points.
The convention bounce has helped not only McCain but also attitudes toward Republican congressional candidates and the GOP in general.
"The Republicans had a very successful convention and, at least initially, the selection of Sarah Palin has made a big difference," says political scientist Larry Sabato of the University of Virginia. "He's in a far better position than his people imagined he would be in at this point."
Even more significant is McCain's jump among likely voters:
In the new poll, taken Friday through Sunday, McCain leads Obama by 54%-44% among those seen as most likely to vote. The survey of 1,022 adults, including 959 registered voters, has a margin of error of +/— 3 points for both samples.
Of course, this poll result has caused widespread panic in the leftwing blogosphere. Gone is their previous confidence which has been replaced by depression and despair as you can see at the Democratic Underground and the Daily Kos. First a sampling of the anguish and anger at DU:
McCain got an 17 pt bounce??? obama was up 7- now mac is up 10. that's an 17 point bounce!?
Specifically, we need to arm ourselves with all the information we can get regardless of if it is nasty or not. You never know what will turn a person you are trying to convince. I'm not saying to encourage things we know are not true, but we need to know these people who want to run our country inside and out. And personal lives are the true windows into what a person believes. Anyone can say whatever they want, but when you look at how they live that is the only truth there is. We cannot make anything out of bounds. That is what makes me pissed off...people who say "we're too good for that". BAH!
i am in a state of despair
UGH! She is the story now. We need to be taking her down with everyone we know.
Not to be outdone by the DUers, the Daily Kos Kossacks have also reacted to Obama's change of fortune with some unintentionally funny comments:
I think things are bleak for Obama. He's not a great debater and John Kerry actually was quite good. His media campaign sucks.
Axelrod should hang his head in Shame. Never have we had such an incompetent "strategist".
I think I'm going to cry. I know that's not helpful in any way. I should probably just keep it to myself. But 10 POINTS!!!! Oh dear. I wish the debates were sooner. The first one is 20 days away.
I want to scream! What is wrong with all of these stupid idiots! Do people really want four more years of the same bullsh--!!!! When will they learn? When our nation is in ruins?
You can find even more hilarious examples of this leftwing plunge into despair at the DUmmie FUnnies.

It's a long time between
September 8, 2008 - 15:23 ET by Ruths husband BenIt's a long time between now and November and a "bounce" is an unstable lead. So we shouldn't be inaugurating McCain, yet. But anytime you can make the wingnuts crazy is a good time for all.

That's true, but they all
September 8, 2008 - 15:48 ET by motherbeltThat's true, but they all made a big deal about it last week when Obama hit 50% for the first time.
I agree with both of you
September 8, 2008 - 16:26 ET by Dee BunkThe lead is going to be hard to keep because the convention is the only place where the Republicans can get their message out without the media distorting it. Even though they work hard after it's over to discredit everything that is said, people are still able to see through it.
It won't be the same in the coming weeks because the media controls the message. They have to be very aggressive live Gingrich was to that MSNBC reporter. They have to stop letting the press define things.
The debates will be key and McCain better make sure that the questions come from a balanced panel. No settling! An Olberman or Campbell Brown or Chris Matthews had better be countered with a Shawn Hannity or Laura Ingram and a Tom Brokaw should be matched with a Brit Hume, If there is a George Stepho there needs to be a Karl Rove.
Demand Fairness in the Debates or lose the race. Each and every debate needs to be balanced. One debate could turn it.
Hi Dee...I know the only
September 8, 2008 - 16:36 ET by bigtimerHi Dee...
I know the only debate I really want to see is with Palin/Biden...
Also their isn't going to be the kind of balance you and I would like to see with the debates regarding Obama/McCain...they have already named tie networks and mods if memory serves me right, one is PBS, the other is abc, but I cannot remember the third for sure, not Fox though...
too lazy to look it up.
One thing I want to hear about is illegal immigration, which I fear it won't be brought up, or just touched on very little, another thing I already am sick of hearing from McCain, including today, is how he fights his own party...that is getting very old, and he's better be glad he has Palin on the ticket....that is all I am going to say...I know they are both now a tag team saying how they fight their own party, but their is a difference on what each has done and why, especially McCain.
Btw...I understand the political so-called strategy of McCain going to the middle and getting dems ect....but heck, he's always been there anyway, not a hard reach for him in any way, shape or form..
Gotta' run for a few, we seem to hit and miss quite a bit lately.
"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh
BT - that is so disappointing if he agreed to PBS and ABC
September 8, 2008 - 17:11 ET by Dee Bunkand another non FOX. I don't mind the fighting his own party thing because it works and it's true. Obama needs to be exposed for the far left winger he is and this is how McCain can do it. He's drawing attention to the fact that he's not a normal conservative and I think that is good because he really is an Independent and hopefully people will realize that.
I do believe McCain will be ruthless about vetoing earmarks and I'm excited about that. He is so familiar with the process that he'll be able to notice them easily. I think Palin will be a good influence on him. He can see that she is genuine and I think he'll take notice of how she goes after corrupt people without going after conservative ideas.
I'm sure that the illegal immigration thing will come up and I have no doubt that Obama would do nothing about it and even allow licenses and give them health care. I have a much more liberal position on immigration than most here but I'm very for strong borders and no health care no licenses and no voting all of which Obama would support. There is no question in my mind that Obama is worse on every single issue.
I feel very good and confident about voting for McCain Palin now. It doesn't mean I won't have problems with him. I know I will.
Dee... About the debate
September 8, 2008 - 17:29 ET by bigtimerDee...
About the debate and who are having them, it seems like there was a blog post about it, this was before the announcenment of Palin...anyway I was really disappointed, once again.
No Fox.
Seems like the other one was CBS, it may have been NBC, but it wasn't CNN if memory serves me, which don't trust that...lol.
The reason I do not think illegal immigration is going to be much of an issue is because they are both pandering for the hispanic votes, no matter what....and the mods know how they both stand but are for Obama, so the less said the better.
I'm just looking forward to 2012...it will be heck gritting my teeth for four years as it is...I heard all I could stand of all the dems McCain is going to put in his adminsitration on Face the Nation yesterday...
I wished he would just be quiet, let Sarah do the talking.
Can't help it...the more he talks, the more I remember why I do not like him.
Palin Power!
Btw...I am hoping Mark has something soon about Matthews show since it stated, it has been something else...
Blonde if you read this, Chucky T got a good one in on Matthews about a community worker and racism Chrissy tried to insert regarding Obama....like Chuck said, it had nothing to do with race...plus he is sure it is something the Obama campaign wished they wouldn't have ran on now, after-all they put it out there first...
I really enjoyed it, Matthews is running scared, big time.

BT - I just heard Fox announce they have the first Debate
September 8, 2008 - 17:41 ET by Dee Bunkon Sept 28 - their ears were ringing!
I'm still bothered though because each debate needs to be balanced. You know darn well that FOX will ask tough questions of both candidates. I'm sure they won't shy away from illegal immigration. I'm sure they will also go after McCain on his liberal positions. They will be fair and we'll get complete bias on the other two.
I'd rather see each debate shown on all the networks with balanced panels. That way I think if Hume saw one sided questions from a Brokaw, he'd respond with the same. As it is, I think Hume and fox will be fair and that doesn't help us when the others won't be.
Now I'm confused and really mad
September 8, 2008 - 17:51 ET by Dee BunkI don't know what FOX was talking about. Maybe they are just allowed to air it.
I found the schedule and it's as left as it could be - PBS, CBS and NBC! The least bias ABC was shut out. I guess Obama didn't like the tough questions he got in the debate with Hillary. ABC was the only one that asked him anything hard. I'm sure they would be easier on him now that it's against a Republican, but still, they would be better than those three.
I can't believe McCain went for this

Dang I had a reply and lost it here, the site went bonkers...anyway that tickles me if it is Fox, are you sure it wasn't jus the advertizement that they are covering the first debate the 29th?
I am tickled pink if it is Fox...believe me.

I think you saw the same thing I did this morning, it is an advertizement for the debate on the 29th (to watch their channel)...although, if you didn't know they weren't the ones having the debate you would think they were, it is deceiving...when I first saw it this morning, I had to think for a second, now I know the debates have already been set in stone...
Like I said there was a blog post about it awhile back here...only reason I remembered...lol.

left wing media manipulations are common....
September 8, 2008 - 15:47 ET by spiderdanI thought America would be able to purge memories of how slanted and biased media coverage of the Kerry campaign was proven to be, but, alas, the "not-to-be-outdone" contemporary herd of liberal flacks are going to pull out all the stops. Manipulating polling data is a standard trick -- polls are simple to distort. Here's an example:
Q: (to the conservative candidate): Reports indicate civilian casualties continue in the war on terror. Are US forces guilty of murder?
Q: (to the liberal candidate): A woman was sexually assaulted by a group of right wing thugs. Medical sources indicate a wood handled broom was used in the assault. Do you support stronger penalties for these types of crimes?
Analysis of answers:
(Conservative candidate): Supports unfettered and unchecked military action that results in massive civilian deaths.
(Liberal candidate): Recommends less wood be used to manufacture brooms. Advocates hate crime legislation against anyone deemed "right wing". Offers personal aid and comfort to victim, only after a couple of drinks and the kids are in bed.
Think these examples are over-stretched? Guess again. I can poll anyone about anything, twisting their response to meet my agenda. Until the media asks simple "yes or no" questions, liberal candidates will flap their gums with everything but the answer, always finding time to blame President Bush or Vice-President Cheney in the process.

However, it's worth pointing out that there do appear to be some problems with this poll. Compared to all the others, it dramatically oversamples Republicans. I think it's probably closer to correct than most of the others, but I do think that it's weighted too heavily.
It has +1 Dems.
Rasmussen currently has +5.7 Dems.
Through most of the year, all the polls have been +10 (or more) Dems.
My "gut" says that on election day (assuming the current level of McCain/Palin enthusiasm doesn't fall), that it will be around +2 to +3 Dems. In 2006, it was +2, and in both 2004 and 2000, it was even (I think. I know it was even in 2000...still checking on 2004).

msnbc.com -- "McCain leads in new poll", very small link, several links down, cites AP article*.

nytimes.com -- STILL no headline or link on their homepage.
washingtonpost.com -- ditto.
latimes.com -- Under headline "Palin, Clinton battling for women voters", there's a very small blog footer link: "BLOG: McCain clearly wins battle of the bounces", cites Gallup and other polls.
foxnews.com -- "McCain Surges to the Front", top-of-homepage headline, cites Gallup poll.

Obama's biggest problems are that the process has been too long, & it's harder for his smoke & mirrors show to work. His other problem is the MSM has been so over the top for the guy, many are starting to have their doubts. Plus, he effed up when he picked "Plugs" Biden as his VP. What a tool, if he was half as good as advertised, Obama would be up by 20 points. September 9, 2008 - 04:03 ET by CooltomI hope the RNC is making notes about the Palin phenomenon and realize (as I've been saying for years):
Republicans demolish the Dems when they act like true Republicans (Reagan in '80, Newt in '94, Palin in '08)
Democrats are slaughtered when they act like true Democrats (McGovern in '72, Mondale in '84, Dukakis in '88, Obama in '08)
The only time when Republicans lose is when they try to out-pander the Democrats. This is like trying to out-slut Pamela Anderson or out-bimbo Lindsay Lohan. Ain't gonna happen.
And forget about this bi-partisan crapola. The only way Republicans should ''reach across the aisle'' is with morter fire.
